America great again. Inside politics, a source by the best reporters now. Welcome to inside politics, im john king. To our viewers in the United States and around the world, thank you for sharing your sunday. Big news of the special counsel investigation. The Top White House lawyer has answered questions, get this, for 30 hour and has unique insights of several major events. The president and his team insisting saying no big deal, and he was told to cooperate. But in his spin in his tweets earlier today more signs the president himself will not cooperate. I think the best analysis would be that the mueller team is panicking. They know they dont have a case. There was no collusion, no obstruction. They cant prove it, and they are trying to get the president to testify. And theyre hoping that if they put out a story like this in which they suggest that gmegan s cooperating against him, they dont say that, but hell want to come in. Is it a justify of angerer or a danger s abuse of power . He was revoked my clearance and others, and im not a lawyer but i think theres a question about whether or not theres corrupt intent doing this. I think this is thing lawyer and courts and others are going to be looking at to determine whether or not mr. Trump is doing any of this in order to obstruct justice or to silence critics. And the apprentice reality tv star omarosa. Im not going to be bullied or intimidated and go toe to toe with him. Everything he throws at me, believe me my evidence is much better than theirs. How are you going to determine what you need to if. Well see. Hes threatening to get me arrested, trying to intimidate my publisher, trying to intimidate me. Donald trump has met his match. Another interesting week. Julie pacen, michael vendor, and cnns sara mari. We begin this hour with the new white house attacks on the special counsel led by the president himself including new tweets today that have some insights why the president and his team are on edge. The New York Times detailing the amazing cooperation theyre receiving from white house don megan. In them the time reports and cnn has confirmed megan shared insights on the president s mindset as he fired comey, repeatedly attacked and undermined Jeff Sessions and other Department Officials and even attempted to fire mueller from the special counsel. He examined whether mr. Trump obstructed justice, a clear view of the president s most intimate moments with his lawyer. And Rudy Giuliani tweeting this after, time for the Mueller Investigation to file a report. We will release ours. Dont interfere with election like comey. And if youre Still Holding out any hope the president himself might cooperate and answer questions from the special counsel, well, read his tweets this morning. Listening to this its time to reconsider. Mr. Mueller is highly conflicted. In fact, comey is like his best friend. I could go into conflict after conflict. But sadly mr. Mueller is conflict. But let him write his report. We did nothing. Theres no collusion. Comey is not his best friend. Thats another lie the president likes to repeat. But hes up early this morning tweeting again about this story. Publicly the white house is trying to take a hohum about this saying the president is cooperating, don megan is cooperating and the president callatize a fake piece and, you know, comparing don megan to john dean in nixon days. And it turns quickly into an attack on bob mueller. This has to send them jitters especially i want to read a line from william burr, don megans attorney. The white House Counsel has an attorney. Declines to assert any privilege so mr. Megan answered the questions fulsomely and honestly as any person interviewed by federal investigators must. Theres another line in that piece that really stood out to me, and that is that megan is his attorney came to believe that if trump were to be investigated for obstruction, which he is now he might try to make mcgahn the fall guy. Think ability that, hes going in there expecting he has to essentially clear his own name because he thinks the president could ultimately try to point this at him. I think its true the original set of white house lirs tolawye told him to cooperate. Its a small group of people that was in the room, in some cases just trump and james comey and we know his pattern of trying to change the facts, tell different versions of the story, so i think you can tell from these tweets this morning and the statements yesterday there is a lot of concern about the fact mcgahn is cooperating so extensively. To your point about the different strategy, its a big shift. The new white house attorney ema flood has been brought in has told the special counsel no when they want to interview kelly. If youre the president of the United States, and again don mcgahn knows a lot more than we do, the president knows a lot more than we do. When you see this story now, what does it tell you . It does tell me theres concern in the white house about the fact this was their strategy going to yinto it. And obviously don mcgahn wants to protect himself. But this is mess the white house got itself into. They did not want their counsel to cooperate with the special counsel. They chose not to do this. In many ways we shouldnt be surprised that the guy who is the white House Counsel who has been permitted by the president to go in and share his insights with Robert Muellers team has been called in again and again because he was there for these key decisions. He may have just confirmed the same things that steve bannon said, the same thing that Reince Priebus said, that the president would rant about these things and nothing would ever be done and no one would ever take him seriously. Again, this is another champ of a mess the white house has gotten itself into. The president can be upset and rant on twitter but they chose this strategy. This is the strategy they chose. In the trump mcgahn relationship here, its been really acrimonious for a long time. Theres that photo, and we know that mcgahn would disappear for days, stay out of the president s sight and out of the oval office for days to avoid getting yelled at. We know hes working on judges, the point man on the Supreme Court nominations. Hes getting a lot of his colleagues and former colleagues into the Justice Department as lawyer, and hes talking to Robert Mueller quite a bit. And this is kind of to julies point earlier this is sort of a much more serious version of the omarosa story. The people around trump fear what hes going to do, how youre going to eventually get thrown under the bus. Omarosa taped conversations in the situation room, don mcgahn is cooperated with Robert Mueller. And michael beschloss, the president ial historian tweeting about 1973, heading into the watergate investigation where the big concern was john dean would end up giving testimony to the president of the United States. As we go through this you made a key point, a very important point. The president is transparent, actually. He shares it with us. I read one of his tweets off the show attacking the New York Times and the story. The failing the New York Times wrote a story made it seem like the white House Counsel and he spelled counsel wrong had turned on the president when in fact it is just the opposite. If the president committed obstruction of justice the person who might know better than anyone else would be his white House Counsel, who was a party to all the major decisions the president made when he was considering to fire james comey, fire Jeff Sessions or the fire the special counsel himself. So the fact that don mcgahn is spending 30 hours speaking to bob mueller it means mueller knows whats happening inside the oval office. He has a better view what was happening and what the president was thinking. And if there is an obstruction case, don mcgahn may have ended it on the special counsel. And that level of detail and fulsome cooperation to quote his own opportunity, that also gives Robert Mueller what documents he needs to me thinking about said that the white house attorney, the lead white house attorney would cooperate and that the prosecutor would have killed for that. Oh, my god, it would have been helpful to us. Theyre there as the attorney for the white house operation and essentially to protect the office of the presidency, not the president themselves. And you do get the sense when you talk about the dynamic between mcgahn and trump that trump doesnt necessarily understand that. Was he serious or did he do anything . Did he just talk about firing Jeff Sessions, talk about going after Rod Rosenstein or did he ask people to do thing snz. The story points out thats what mcgahn is talking to the special counsels office about. Weve seen much more clearly the trump pr campaign and strategy against mueller. Not necessarily the legal strategy. And what that pr campaign has been is no collusion. And thats always kind of been the harder point to prove. But this sfotory shows when you look at the trump tweets, last year trump tweeted no obstruction one time. Hes done it twice in the last 13 hours and about once a week for the last six weeks. The story gives a bit of insight into where i think trump is aware of a lot of these details. And their public line has been he wants to testify. I dont believe it. But i think now you get the sense of confrontation where if bob mueller wants to talk to this president hes going to have subpoena him. If he really were clamoring in there to get in there and share his story with the special counsel i think he would probably be doing that. I think any lawyer would say absolutely not. Were not going to let you run in there and fully give him the keys to the kingdom. Well see how Robert Mueller is going to react. And also pressuring him if he has a report to issue it now as opposed until after the elections when it possible the democrats will control the house of representatives. Up next we continue the conversation about this. The president s anger. His critics takes a dramatic turn. Using his powers to punish those he blames for the investigation. Frizzy, unruly hair . Welcome back. 15 former top intelligence officials who served in democratic and republican administrations reviewed President Trump this past week. As did some 60 former lower level Intelligence Officers plus the four star admiral who led the operation that killed osama bin laden. But the president despite all that criticism clearly pleased with himself. I know that ive gotten tremendous response from having done that because security clearances are very important to me. Very, very important. And ive had a tremendous response for having done that. Theres no silence. Afghanistan im giving them a bigger voice. Many people dont know who he is, and now he has a bigger voice and thats okay with me because i like taking on voices like that. The him in question there, of course, is the former cia director john brennen. The president revoked his security clearance this past week and plainly spelled out his reasoning with the wall street journal. Quote, i call it the rigged witch hunt. It is a sham. He is targeting, taking on in his words those he sees as responsible for an investigation that now stretches beyond russias the disputable meddling to now include as we discussed possible collusion with the russians, possible collusion by the president himself. Hes now using president ial powers not just words and also escalating his open war against Law Enforcement and intelligence communities. Another tweet friday calling his attorney general in all caps, a blank. Hes trumped on power, he really is. And i think hes abusing the powers of that office. I think right now this country is a in a crisis in terms of what mr. Trump has done and is liable to do. What is most interesting in the rebuke from all the former intelligence issues is many of them actually take issues with john brennen. Many of them thin hes a paid contributor now on msnbc, but they think the big question is not what john brennen says but this is america and he has a constitutional right to free speech and the white house says its because of the things he says on television. The president may clear that interview with you but its got nothing to do with that or its secondary. Brennen was there at the beginning. My colleague Peter Nicholas gave him a broad open ended question that pulled him into the oval office. This was announced today, what do you think about it, and what was striking the president immediately went to brennens connection to the russian interference issue which has frustrated him from almost day one and continues, you know, this morning. When the announcement was made there was a lot of criticism that this was made in order to divert attention from omarosa. Mission accomplished when doing that when he ties this directly to political and the Washington Post and others reporting they have a list of others and the Washington Post even quoting Senior Administration officials saying theyre going to roll them out to distract from bad news headlines. What . Well, thats a trump strategy. Its a classic trump strategy. You create drama, put out a list of potential people that could come next, one a day for the next several weeks, but it really does show the level of frustration that the president had. This is not because he believes john brennen is violating, you know, some type of norm for intelligence officials. This is directly related to the fact brennen was there giving reports to president obama what he was seeing on russian interference and what he believed was some type of connection between that interference and the trumpco campaign. If you look at the names involved here its a relatable list. William webster goes back to the Reagan Administration and i could go on and on here. People who have served in the military, intelligence community, kept us safe pre and post9 11. Its a sign of our times that these are people who dont get involved in the day to day political debates. But is that a legacy already of President Trump that people have to take sides . If hes politicizing things that havent been politicized in the past, and i think what were seeing from a number of these officials is theyre a little bit worried about the danger or equating or attacking the president with attacking the president. Weve seen that coming out of the the white house saying brennen is unpatriotic and hes not going to be able to use his security clearance because hes outspoken against the president. Again brennen has been out there a lot. He says he finds the president s behavior treasonous but he doesnt say the president has committed treason. Theyre making it about john brennen not about the bigger question. The president didnt consult the cia before he did this, he did not follow the clearly spelled out process for taking away somebodys security clearance where you lay out the behavior that makes you worry they should havetouch instead he told the wall street journal he pulled brennen i think ive called him a butt head and i meant it. I think hes given the National Intelligence community a bad name. I think the things john brennen has said over the past several months about this country has been disgraceful. Mr. Brennen has gone way over the line in my view and i think restricting his clearance, pulling his clearance makes sense to me. The fact hes out there every single day acting in a partisan way probably doesnt help his cause. He says hes probably going to get bruce or, and youre going to see general clapper, former Obama Administration officials. If he keeps going are they going to say mr. President , do whatever you want . Yes, thats exactly what theyre going to do. At some point they may say this is concerning or i dont agree wth the president , but weve seen this sort of milk tone with them no matter the president s comments about africanamericans, muslims, about women. There the gop wags their finger a bit harder. On this one its easy for them to say brennen has stepped over the line and the president is well within his authority to strip security clearances. But you list other people who have not been quite so harsh of the president. They have been. It seems when you dig through the people who have been put on notice a whole lot of them get back to the russia investigation, mike flynn, what the president believes is a witch hunt. Its very difficult to see it as anything other than an enemy. Next omarosa sheays she has tapes, many tapes. Yes. Now tmobile has unlimited for the rest of us. Unlimited for you. For them. For all. An update on the president s morning and a glimpse into his mindset, six times now since 7 01 a. M. , six times since 7 01 a. M. The president has tweeted about the big story that his white House Counsel don mcgahn is cooperate wg the speciing wi counsel. The president s latest one. Study the late Joseph Mccarthy because we are now in period with mueller and his gang that makes Joseph Mccarthy look look like a baby. Rigged witch hunt. One word stood out, he called the apprentice villain turned west wing advisor Omarosa Manigaultnewman a dog. Thats the president s word, a dog. Omarosa learned reality tv at the president s side. She vows shell get the last word here. . Im not going anywhere. Im not going to be bullied. Im not intimidated, and everything he throws at me believe me my tapes are much better than theirs. How are you going to determine whether you need to . Well, well see. Hes threatening to get me arrested. Hes trying to intimidate my publisher, trying to intimidate me. Donald trump has met his match. Who knows what omarosa really knows, but top aides are worried. Discussing whether he usesed the nword and about lara trump. It sounded like theres something youve got in the back pocket to pull out. Clearly if you come onboard the Campaign Like we cant have we got to oh, god, no. Its not just audiotapes but its also video, she may have text messages. And omarosa is obviously sitting on some type of trove of material and to go back to our last segment, gone to the President Trump may book and releasing one tape at a time and this is another thing thats getting under trumps kin skin. He liked omarosa, liked her on the apprentice. It was always trump who was bringing her back in. So in a lot of ways he has really no one to blame but himself for what were seeing. A huge problem of his own making. To that point, we dont know what she has and shes not exactly the most credible witness, but however she does have the president saying oh, gee, im sorry you left. And lara trump says right there, what youve got in her back pocket. Listen to lara trump right here where shes saying we meant to bring you into the fold, we will pay you, but youve got to be nice. The only thing that we have to consider when were talking salary and as far as the campaign is concerned as you know everything is public and that all the money that we raise and pays salaries is directly from done, small dollar donors for the most part. So i know you were making 179 at the white house, and i think we could work something out which would keep ow right along those lines. Specifically i havent even added up the numbers but we were talking about 15k a month. It is a remarkably transparent negotiation. A lot of money. Thats a lot of money if you look at campaign payrolls to pay someone who is not managing the campaign, running the day to day operations on the campaign but essentially going out there and maybe getting a surrogate, whatever the role was they were talking about. And i think the great irony of this is we dont know what omarosa has. Yes, shes trickled out things like this where they dont look great, but its not the same as having a tape of the president saying the n. Word. Shes learned if you dangt out, ok , let me just throw allegations out there and maybe ill provide proof or maybe i wont. That is exactly what the president does every single day and she learned it from him. And this is classic they say theres a tweet for everything. This is then businessman donald trump, omarosa always promises and delivers high drama, honest omarosa. She wont back stab, shell come at you up front. To the point sarah is leg legitimately making, we all talked to them they work a combustible boss. Sometimes out of frustration or concern about him these are things that say remarkable things about the president to us. Imagine what theyre saying to those who work for them. I think thats the big point here. I know she has content. I dont know how serious that content is. I think what the white house is afraid of and the family is afraid of is how the boss reacts to it. When this story came out it was driving me nuts. I dont think we saw anything knew, and in bloomberg, frank bruinys column in the New York Times and the debrief the Washington Post all shows how the president becomes really frustrated with the people who plays the game like he does, omarosa, michael cohen. And this is problem here like he said of his own making. As soon as trump stops reacting to these tapes they almost drop out of the hourly news cycle. But he reacts to it, it becomes a story and then we have in order to get rid of it, if you believe warner, that brennen move was made in order to stop the omarosa story. So this all feedback into itself. They told him not to hire omarosa. They told him not to let don mcgahn cooperate with the special counsel. Mr. President , look in the mirror. The foolish words one prominent democrat now calls inartful. You know, in the world of physics we say for every action theres an opposite and opposing reaction. Well, im definitely a reaction to 2016. If you look at the number of women that have jumped in its incredible as well. Im going back to the fact that we are all reacting to what happened in 2016. You know, im hoping our children and our childrens children will look back at 2018 and say thats when we made history. Christine hallquist after she made history this past week. She frames 2018 as a referendum on President Trump. We have some new numbers to frame the state. Lets take a look at those numbers. Number one, midterm elections are as ms. Hallquist says, mainly about the president. 42 approval for the president. Lets track out how thats gone throughout the year. The president is up a bit from where he started. If you go back to february the president is up 42 . Thats somewhat encouraging to republicans. But look at the approval rating, it has just hugged 40 . The president s disproval rating down a little bit. Theyve improved for february, but still not great for republicans. These are worse for republicans. Democrats, 52, 41 when you ask voters which party theyre going to vote for. Its a double digit gap come election day in 11 weeks, then the democrats will retake the house. From an 11 point advantage now this is why the democrats are encouraged. Yes, its not as big as it was when they started the year. But late april, may, things got close. Now as were getting closer to the election democrats think things are moving their way. The one thing democrats do not need, distractions like this. Were not going to make America Great again. It was never that great. We have not reached greatness. We will reach greatness when every american is fully engaged. It took several days but the democratic governor of new york, mr. Cuomo, later finally said the expression i used was inartful, a smarter politician would have cleaned it up within seconds. Does that matter . He still faces a primary by the way and this progressive opponent Cynthia Nixon said he was trying to prove he was a progressive. The president taking advantage of it, asking whats worse, does it matter nationally or is it just the one guy that made a mistake . The president and the republicans are going to try to get as much out of this as possible. Every time a democrat makes a mistake on the campaign trail you can expect President Trump who watches a lot of Cable Television to amplify it to his millions of twitter followers and try to make a big thing out of it. President trump is really attuned to the type of things reality has based and hes going to be out on the campaign trail using these examples to make sure his voters are actually coming out to it polls. Because weve seen a lot of democratic enthusiasm not as much on the republican side. Even though their numbers are up but not as much on the democratic side. Another interesting thing this week was nancy pelosi speaking sort of openly about her future. What ive always tried to do is build a bridge to the future and hope that would be in the majority, ms. Pulosa said. Number one a lot of the younger members are saying she needs to go if they take back the house and number two they seem to be saying there who do you got, and what do you got . She knows there are a lot of people in the party who want to see generational change. They would like to see potentially a minority as speaker. But the reality is there is no one whos right behind her waiting to step in. Youre going to hear her making this case and using this language about building a bridge. Theyre going to changeup the team around her and then help elevate somebody who can be the face of democrats for the next generation. Can she sell that . Mitch mcconnell is probably not going anywhere, they think the senate will stay in republican hands, that you guys need me for a while, will that work . She can try. I think until someone steps in to fill the void i think theres a decent shot at that. But i think nancy pelosi and other democrats are fooling themselves if they think this is longterm solution. You cant look at the Democratic Party, once they get to washington that would be happy with someone like nancy pelosi staying on as speaker for any long period of time. I mean the Democratic Party is trying to be the party of change right now in the face of trump. And the reality is nancy pelosi is not the face of that. Not the face of that but i think probably in the end its still going to be about trump and you see trumps team making that same argument. And also the special counsel may have something to do with it. An alleged russian spys attempt at an extreme makeover. The smoother the skin, the more comfortable you are in it. One year ago President Trump outlined his strategy for the afghanistan war. He was the third president to do that and like his predecessors he is now finding that winning this war and ending it is extremely complicated. Weve just seen the taliban increase their gains on strategic locations. And the gains theyve been hoping to see with the Afghan Security forces arent improving themselves. There have been some warnings that pulling out would be a disaster. But his instincts have always been to withdraw. 4 billion a year, ouch. Michael . President trump has been ramping up in recent weeks but without the same results, must see tv events, these have become routine as hes recycling a lot of material. Hacks on hillarys serve, attacks on the fake news, and, you know, the Election Night story has become groundhog day at these rallies. This sort of repetitiveness has long been a staple of president s and president ial candidates but this is president who thrives on driving a news cycle in front of large crowds. But the question is how long will this be release for a president who as the top networks stop carrying these rallies as has been the case the last few times hes been out, the next opportunity for this is tuesday in west virginia. Worker wages have been flat basically since 2009 since the recession we came out of, and last year despite a tax cut we got a report from the Labor Department showing wages are down. We have to look at whats going to happen on the campaign trail. Corporate america is doing great, worker wages are flat, thats going to be a theme on the campaign trail for a number of democrats. In the midst of a good economy, can they find an opening. Washington spy drama continues this week.
