>> for the latest, let's bring in sara murray in boulder this morning. >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. the stakes were high for the candidates on the debate stage in boulder, colorado. the third debate and they wasted no time. they came out swinging. the most memorable moment is jeb bush going on the attack of his friend marco rubio for missing votes to run for president. >> marco, you signed up for a six-year term. you should show up to work. the senate, is it a french workweek? you get three days you have to show up? you can campaign or just resign and let someone else take the job. >> the last few weeks, i listened to jeb and heard you are modelling your campaign after john mccain. you will fight hard in new hampshire and places like that. you know how many votes john mccain missed when he was carrying out that comeback? i don't remember you complaining about john mccain's vote record. the reason you are doing it now is because we are running for the same position. >> reporter: the immediate reaction is the attack may have back feared on jeb bush. marco rubio may have capitalized on that moment. although donald trump and ben carson are the frontrunners. you had to look at senator ted cruz. he is looking to pull support from trump and carson. he did that by going after the media. >> the questions asked so far in the debate illustrate why the american people don't trust the media. this is not a cage match and you look at the questions. donald trump, are you a comic book villain? ben carson, can you do math. john kasich, will you insult two people here. jeb bush, why have your numbers fallen? how about talking about the substantive issues that people care about? >> reporter: and republican national convention chairman reince priebus came to the spin room after saying he is disappointed with cnbc. back to you. >> thank you, sara. let's talk about the winners and losers. jeremy diamond has a piece on cnn. read it at your leisure. we are talking about the winners and losers. ted cruz attacked the media. we played one bit of it there. let's play a bit more. >> the questions that are being asked shouldn't be trying to get people to tear into each other. it should be what are your substantive solutions. >> i asked you about the debt limit and got no answer. >> you want me to answer that question? i'm happy to answer that question. let me tell you -- >> we're moving on. >> i have a question for out the same subject. >> you don't want to hear the answer, john? >> you used your time on something else. >> you're not interested in an answer. >> so you could hear the tension. you could hear the disgust. that might work with the conservative audience that is fed up with the mainstream me a media. >> it will work extremely well. last night, we saw ted cruz, the college debater. let's not forget he was a champion debater in college at princeton. in past debates, he has done pretty well. last night, he did extremely well. he delivered the kind of lines where he stood there and waited for his turn and when his turn came, he had this whole line set up about the questions and the comic book villain line. these will play well with the conservative audience he is catering to. >> let's talk about marco rubio. he had a good night. he took an attack from jeb bush and turned it around. he took the criticism from the sun sentinel. let's listen about how he defended and turned around that criticism from the media to his benefit. >> i read that editorial today with great amusement. it is evidence of the bias that exists in the american media today. >> let me answer your question. back in 2004, one of my predecessors ran for president. missing over 30% of his votes. i don't recall people asking for his resignation. john kerry ran for president missing close to 60% of his votes. i don't recall. the sun sentinel endorsed him. obama missed 60% of his votes. the same newspaper endorsed him. this is a double standard that exists between mainstream media. >> and marco rubio making the most of that moment. >> was there a candidate last night who did not go after the mainstream media or moderators? it seems like all of them had their turn. it is something that will play well with that audience. rubio has been seen as one of the establishment favorites and alternative to jeb bush whose campaign has been struggling. rubio is trying to claim another mantle. he is trying to claim the conservative mantle. he took shots noting he should wait his turn a bit. he's a bit young and he should hold off. saying those are the things the establishment in washington says. he was able to train his sights on a lot of different targets. not just republicans. establishment republicans, but also hillary clinton who he also took on last night. showing that he is prepared to be that nominee and that standard for the party and fight into the general election. >> he was prepared to take on jeb bush. we played it a while ago about his voting record. a lot of people think rubio got the better end of that exchange by far. you could hear the dejection. after the debate, dana bash caught up with jeb bush and asked him if he was upset about the debate performance. let's listen to what he said to dana. >> you seem quite frustrated. >> not frustrated. i wish i had gotten questions -- got to answer questions on things on the minds of people. entitlement challenges, the debt, i got fantasy football. it's important i guess. >> the interesting thing is jeb actually answered the question about fantasy football and bragged his team is 7-0. chris christie did what the other candidates did. attack the notion. in that, you see, perhaps, where jeb is different than the younger group of candidates. >> you know, chris christie did exactly what jeb bush failed to do all night. he jumped right in when jeb bush finished answering that question. jeb bush gave a rambling answer about regulation and this and that. chris christie jumps in and showed jeb bush how he should have answered the question if you want to get a moment in the night. chris christie said why are we talking about fantasy football? you have isis running around and al qaeda and all these problems and we're talking about fantasy football. that was chris christie's best moment of the night without a doubt. it underscored how much jeb bush needs to improve his debate performance if he wants to continue in the race and if he will try to become the party's nominee. >> can we look at the numbers again? the numbers each candidate was allowed to speak or allowed to elbow in. >> managed to elbow in. >> carly fiorina, she did not have more questions. fiorina managed to get the most air time, if you will, last night. i wonder if she will capitalize it like the last time she was on the debate stage. >> i don't know she had a moment last night like she had in the second republican debate when she first made it to the main stage where she was really -- that was her moment last time and she galvanized supporters and pulled new supporters who are starting to get to know her. she is a new face. she ran for the senate in california. i don't know she had the moment to show supporters and showed them she is confident and she can move forward and be one of the strongest candidates in the race. i'm not sure she did exactly what she needed to. i guess we will see. >> jeremy diamond. thank you. we will tweet out a link to your piece. really stacks up the winners and losers. >> we didn't talk about donald trump and ben carson. that tells you something. >> ben carson called out for his involvement with a diet supplement over claims its products could cure cancer and autism. and cnbc moderator carl quintanilla called him out after it settled with the government. >> it is absolutely absurd to say i had any relationship with them. do i take the product? ben carson, can you do math? >> marco rubio, why don't you resign. how about talking about the substantive issues? >> reporter: cruz wasn't the only one unhappy. republican national convention chairman reince priebus came to the spin room saying he is disappointed with cnbc. >> what a night. joining us to break down the debate, cnn reporter jeremy diamond live in our washington bureau. live with us this morning. you have a great piece on cnn.com. and a good night for marco rubio. >> there is no doubt about it. marco rubio did what he needed to do last night. he came across strongly throughout the night. it started off with the exchange with jeb bush and marco rubio. jeb trying to take a swipe at marco rubio. the florida senator threw it back at him and he came out on top of the exchange according to most people. throughout the night, rubio stayed consistent. he fed red meat to the conservative supporters. knocking down the establishment and hillary clinton. you name it. marco rubio is certainly set to come out of the night with a strong performance and something that will give him momentum to go forward and continue to rise in the polls. >> one of my favorite quotes is when you come at the king, you best not miss. and jeb went after marco rubio. he made governor bush suffer a bit there. anna navarro said she was glum after the debate. bush supporters were nervous heading into the debate. this is not the performance he needed. probably the opposite. >> absolutely. his campaign has been struggling in recent weeks. he came into the race as a shore bet for the gop. he was said to be the frontrunner throughout the race. he came in with tens of millions of dollars just as he announced. now when donald trump came through, he kind of got eclipsed by that huge personality. then continuing. he sagged in the polls. he struggled to get his numbers up. the debate is not his event. he did not do excellent in the other debates. last night, he really faded into the background. definitely not the performance he needed. in the days to come, his campaign will try to reassess what he needs to be able to do in the next debates and what he needs to do on the campaign trail to show voters he has the enthusiasm and he has the passion and he is the right person to be the standard for the party come november 2016. >> jeremy, he has a ton of money and super pac money to buy ads if the super pac needs. he raised $13 million in the third quarter. is he a different campaigner than debater? there are two jeb bushs here? is he not lighting the fire? >> jeb bush is great in smaller settings. in the town hall setting where he is able to connect with voters one-on-one or that small setting, he does really well. the problem is that he doesn't really have that fire in the belly personality that is able to come across well on tv and in larger forums. he has shown some enthusiasm recently and a willingness to attack other candidates like donald trump. he has shown his frustration and anger a bit with the state of politics in the state of the race today where one of the biggest yellers and screamers is the one doing the best in the race. we did not see that last night. you did not see that passion. when he sat for an interview and spoke with dana bash last night, he still could not articulate that passion. he really struggled with that. >> my bet is bush will set something up today to turn this around to change the narrative. quickly, donald trump last night, maybe not central to the debate, but you argue still a good debate. >> absolutely. i think donald trump showed americans that he can be a different kind of candidate. he showed he is not just a one-trick pony. he showed a little more reserved side. he took a lot of incoming fire last night. starting with the question from cnbc's john harwood who asked if his campaign is a comic book version. that is a tough question. trump said that is not very nice, but he answered the question and pivoted to his message and he stayed on message instead of going on a tangent. he did not level personal attacks to other candidates. he did go after john kasich. it came after he was attacked and he went after him on policy grounds on the fact he was a lehman brothers associate before and points about the economy in ohio. we definitely saw a different donald trump. maybe a bit more presidential donald trump. >> jeremy diamond, great to have you. check out jeremy's piece on cnn politics. those candidates going after the cnbc moderators. were the questions fair? >> no, john, john do you want me to answer or do you want to answer? because i have to tell it you the truth. even in new jersey, what are you doing is rude. >> are you a comic book villain? >> it was not a fair debate in that regard. >> let's bring in brian stelter. that plays well. they say this is the mainstream media and this is not playing well. >> the best was marco rubio with the mainstream media is the best super pac. i thought there was more of an issue last night with the management of the time and management of the candidates. yes, some of the questions might have seemed staged and too personal and too much about getting candidates to fight with each other. there was chaos throughout the debate. it was unclear who was in charge. that's a big difference from fox and cnn debates. tapper was in charge of the cnn debate. megyn kelly was in charge of the fox debate. you knew who was leading the show. you didn't know who was leading the show. >> the tone of the questions and to whom and how often the questions were going. we have the debate time. who got the most talking last night. >> it is revealing. >> carly fiorina spoke the most last night. more than ten minutes of talk time. jeb bush and rand paul had the least. >> she was most effective. >> i guess jeb bush's campaign manager danny diaz banging on the control room door during the debate essentially saying this is not fair. you are not asking fair questions and not distributing enough. >> they wanted a two hour debate. cnbc wanted to go on longer. cnn's was three hours long. i wish they had gone on longer. on the one hand, it was chaotic it was good it ended at two hours. in a perfect world, we would not have ten candidates on the stage. if you had seven earlier and %-p. the top ranking candidates don't want that to happen. they have a lot of leverage. >> one of the criticisms this morning is so many of the candidates about the mainstream media, it struck me. i don't think cnbc as quote/unquote mainstream media. it is a economics platform. >> with many conservative com n commonators. >> that is not what it normally is. i think the moderators could have pushed back more on it and expected it more. >> cnbc's one line statement. people who want to be president of the united states should be able to answer tough questions. that is the one line response to the criticism. the criticism is beyond tough questions, but the management of the stage and pushback. >> becky quick, she asked a question to donald trump about his position on h-1b visas and he criticized mark zuckerberg and marco rubio. he completely disavowed his platform and she not push him on it. >> she said i'm not sure where i read that. instead of pushing and showing the evidence that she was right and right to ask the question. it goes to show that being on the stage and moderating debates is difficult. frankly, i came away having more respect for the jake tappers and megyn kellys of the world. we will see changes in the future debates because of. this more push back. they want more control. >> brian, thank you so much. let's see what is coming up on "new day." alisyn camerota joins us. >> we will have more analysis of the republican debate. which candidate one, which candidate lost and which candidate has the best zingers. including the man who many believe won the debate. marco rubio. we will have carly fiorina and chris christie as well as former governor mike huckabee. where does the presidential race go from here?
