Expected to bring storm surges that officials call unsurvivable. Louisiana has not seen a storm this strong in 150 years. Surges of 15 feet or higher could overwhelm coasts in both states. And water levels are already rising quickly, more than 1. 5 Million People are under some type of evacuation order. Coronavirus and the need to maintain social distancing only complicating the hurricane response in louisiana. The state is taking people to hotels instead of shelters. Laura is just the tenth hirk hurricane in history since Record Keeping began. So power is already out for more than 200,000 customers in louisiana. Conditions are dedo toodooro ti rapidly in lake charles and that is where Martin Savidge is. I assume it is not safe to be out in the open . Reporter thats right. We were out there earlier this evening and then it just became far too dangerous. I mean, the winds were not only howling, the rain was cominghor. It just was too dangerous for the crew and us to be out there. We had a brief lull and you could say that was the eye. I dont think that we got the fullon eye. And now were getting all the alerts of the extreme wind warnings. And this is a new alert basically saying that you need to seek shelter now because the wind speeds are going to be excessi excessive. The windows, you can see them moving in and out, that is the pressure of this storm as it moves past. In lake charles, there is extreme fear what daylight will reveal. Also, this is 30 miles away from the coast, but they too were worried about storm surge here. And there were people who decided that they wanted to ride it out, many of them fearful of the coronavirus saying that they were more worried about catching coronavirus in an evacuation shelter than they were of this storm. The truth is, this storm was far more dangerous than anything that they might find in an emergency shelter. But that choice is no longer an option for them. So right now in lake charles, the anxious moments and hours of waiting for the storm to pass and daylight to reveal what many believe will be a very devastating scene. A harrowing night no question. And the window to move is closed. This is now bearing the bluruntf this storm. Thank you, martin. Beaumont, texas is also in the path before derek van dam is there. I know you are getting pummeled. What are you seeing . Reporter good morning. We are getting battered here in beaumont, but just 30 miles to our east, they are getting absolutely crushed. We have had Tropical Storm, Hurricane Force gusts pretty consistent, they come in waves. A lot of familiar sites like transformers lighting up that purple sky that we see so often during the middle of an intense hurricane like major hurricane laura is. And there is a false sense of security when the eye of a hurricane moves inland. A lot of times people will get into the eye, the calm quote unquote part of the storm. They will inspect to see if they had any property damage. But what they dont understand is that at a moments notice the back side of 9 storm will come their way, change wind directions and pick up in a moments notice as well. So whatever debris or whatever damage there has been left over from the north side of the wall will wrap back in and potentially blow that across their property and putting them in danger as well. Most people have evacuated the area, but again, when we go hurricane chasing, this is a game of miles. We are on the outer fringe of the strongest part of hurricane laura which has been good for broadcasting because we can actually get to air. We still have electricity. But the same cannot be said for the hundreds aof thousands of people dealing with no power and that number will sky rocket. We talked to a Beaumont Police officer earlier this morning and she told us that previous hurricanes had actually knocked out power in some of the rural areas of Southeast Texas and into louisiana for upwards of a month. So people need to be prepared for those types of conditions. No services, no electricity going forward. And we also know that fire and police and search and rescue will not start to reinitiate those operations until winds drop below Tropical Storm force. So we still have another 6 to 12 hours where im located in Southeast Texas, i mean you can clearly see were still Tropical Storm conditions with the winds being as violence as they are. But were on the outer fwrinks fringes of lawyer are auras wr. Up to 270,000 people without power. So this is just climbing. I know that you will stay with us and well come back to you later this morning. So where is hurricane laura headed now . Chad myers is in for us, he is tracking this storm. And this is the kind of storm that can redraw the coastline, new inlets. This is a powerful storm here. And the water is still rising. We think about the eye has passed, now the water will go down. That is not the case. The surge is still moving inland. Moving north of i10. The water is still flowing the wrong direction in these rivers. So right now lake charles in the eye, the winds have calmed down, but they will come in from the west probably the next 10 or 15 minutes. So dont go out there even if you still have power and you are wrapping u watching us, but it is still coming. It made landfall near cameron, louisiana. A devastating blow. We talked to dr. Ken graham yesterday and ended that this was going to be catastrophic. And then about two hours later, the words came out from the National Hurricane center that said unsurvivable. So that was just one step up. I think that they got to catastroph catastrophic, but people didnt really realize it and the unsurvivable part, where did that word come from . It came from the National Hurricane center. In is the eye right there, lake charles moving to the north. And on the east side of it, there will be tornados through the bayou and the water is still rising there. Significant surge well east of this storm. There could still be 10 to 15 feet surges east of the storm. Made landfall as a strong category 4. Were to were down to 130 Miles Per Hour, but you wont notice the difference. Everywhere you see murder spell, that is 110mileperhour or greater. And it is probably from side to side 30 miles wide. That is a 30 mile wide ef2 tornado that is hitting everyone in its path. And then the surge with it as well. Things, roofs when you look at an ef2 tornado, the roofs are gone from most houses and that is what is happening with this 30 mile wide swathe as the storm moves to the north. Here is where we started the day. We watched it painfully hour by hour get stronger and stronger, Hurricane Hunters flying through it. I cant imagine the turbulence that they flew through this to give us this data, but there it is, 130 with gusts probably to 160. And the pressure is still very low. It isnt going to lose a lot of wind speed because what we call angular momentum. As this eye makes landfall and it gets smaller, think about the eye that andrew had, it was so smaufl a small and that is why it got to that 5 tornado category. This eye is going to continue to shrink and the winds will continue to be strong for hours and hours and that 15 to 20 foot storm surge up and down and along the coast here. Those towns arent 15 or 20 feet high. And the buoys in the gulf of mexico had waves at 35 feet. So think about 15, 20 foot surge and 30 foot waves. Here is how far the water has moved through these bayous up the rivers and even into lake charles. Im even fearful for our crews there at the hotel because the water is still coming up and the hotel that they are this is at the water but that is the strongest building that we could find. It will still be significant rainfall here. 10 inches of rain is certainly not out of the question. Well go all the way to 5 00 central, moving up alexandria, that is when you get the worst part of it. And then it moves to the north. Losing some strength because it is not over water, but for the first 20 miles from cameron all the way to lake charles, there is not much land there. There is very low land and it is very wetland in some spots and that is where this weather is going here. Hurricane laura up through 14r50e6 po shreveport. And i think that we could have Power Outages at little rock. Thank you so much, chad. We know about in about 49 minute, there will be another update fwrt naup d update from the National Hurricane center. Well talk more about this after the break. Unlike ordinary memory supplements. Officials say unsurvivable storm surges could hit louisiana and texas as far as 40 miles inland. But they decided to reference came notice sha only about came kenosha kenosha. Last week joe biden didnt say one word about the violence and chaos engulfing cities across this country. So let me be clear. The violence must stop whether in minneapolis, portland or kenosha. Too many heros have died defending our freedom to see Americans Strike each other down. We will have law and order on the streets of this country for every american. Joe biden would double down on the very policies that are leading the violence in americas cities. The hard truth is you wont be safe in joe bidens america. It is worth noting pence who heads the Coronavirus Task force spoke to a crowd that was not g Wearing Masks and several say they were not tested for coronavirus. President trump making an appearance at the earned of the night. And despite the hurricane, as of now the president s acceptance speech will go on as scheduled tonight on the south lawn of the white house. Another recurring theme of the rnc is that the president has crafted and economy like no other. Trumps policies have been like rocket fuel to the economy. The president also built the most inclusive economy ever. Americans are going back to work. An economy soared to new heights. We built the greatest economy in the world. We made America Great again. Fact is millions are out of work right now. Emergency stimulus has expired. But the white house focuses on the direction of the data, not the depths of the crisis. Instead of the main street pain, the president is taking credit for wall street gains. And take a look at stocks since inauguration day, the dow is up 43 , s p up 53 and nasdaq up an astonishing 109 . These are numbers this team likes to talk about. The Vice President claimed the administration inherited an economy struggling to break out of the slowest recovery since the Great Depression while the recovery was slow, it was one of the longest expansions on record and it just ended this year because of the pandemic. And on jobs, the president likes to take credit for the gains, ignore the losses and declare victory in these small records and rebounds from the crisis. Over9 million jobs were created in may, june and july, but look, the shear size of the jobs crash was so unprecedented, it erased nearly a decade of job market growth. To be honest here, trump is now in a jobs hole. He is down a net 5. 8 million jobs since he took office. And the stock market is up, but jobs have a lot of recovering to do. The president and his team really focusing on this message that they are trying to send that only he can make a great economy and it is great begin. And we begin with the big breaking news this morning. The strongest storm to hit louisiana in a century making landfall overnight. Category 4 hurricane laura is expected to bring storm surges to louisiana and texas that officials are calling unsurvivable as far as 40 miles inland. Surges of 15 feet or higher could overwhelm coasts in both states. Water levels are already rising quickly, more than 1. 5 Million People are under some type of evacuation order. Coronavirus and the need to maintain social distancing is complicating the hurricane response. In louisiana the state is taking people to hotels instead of shelters. Laura is just the tenth hurricane to make landfall in the United States with winds of 150 Miles Per Hour or more. And power is already out for more than 200,000 customers in louisiana. Conditions are deteriorating rapidly in lake charles, and that is where Martin Savidge is for us. He is joining us live. When we checked in with you earlier, you had to head into the hotel for shelter. What are you seeing now . Reporter we ventured out a little britt. This is as far as where well go. Were inside the parking deck and i dont know if you can hear the incredible roar, it ranges between loud whine and then it sounds like a jet. There is no way that we could step out of this building. We would be swept away. And there is already a lot of tree damage, we know there has been structure all damage dama to this hotel complex. And we have heard that there is not flooding. If that holds, that would be extremely good news because that has been one of the greatest fears. But of course we still have a long way to go. But the initial report is that there is not flooding in the city of lake charles. We are hearing that there is structural damage, but no way to really ascertain how severe or how widespread it is. You can still hear that this storm is going wild. And the projected as much as 40 miles inland. There is little to stop it from marching all the way in. We still have a long way to go. We think the eye passed by us, but if there was any respite, it was very brief and now the violence outside is almost unbelievab unbelievable. Glad to see that you have those proenlgtective glasses on. And beaumont is also in the path and Derek Van Damme is joining us live there. What are the conditions like wr. Reporter were getting batter eed here, and this is an extremely scary storm because people know the power of the hurricanes that move through this region, they lived through harvey, rita, through ike. But this area just as soon as you think that maybe you are in the clear, all of a sudden a band of rain and extremely heavy wind starts moving through and it knocks out our power. Last hour we had full power at the hotel that were staying at, but now were completely in dark like the hundreds of thousands of other people about across Southeast Texas and into western louisiana. The eye is moving across the central portions of louisiana as we speak and that will lure a severan sense of false security because they think the storm is over, but you have to remember the back side of the system can often be just as destructive if not more because all the damage that is already on the ground will be picked back up again after the lull in the winds. We have another 6 to 12 hours of Tropical Stormforce winds here in be monaumont, so no search a rescue braces ongoing. Remember, winds have to drop below Tropical Storm force for those to be reinstated according to one of the local Police Officers that we spoke to this morning. And she told me that previous hurricanes that moved across this region have knocked out power in some of the rural areas for over a month. So we have to be prepared that the potential at least exists for considering the covid pandemic that this is amongst that the potential exists for several days if not weeks of no electricity within this area that has been hit so hard by major hurricane laura. Of course we have storm surge concerns closer to the coast, closer to the east, we have interstate 10 behind me, it is open here, so we have an exit point. But residents that are ten miles to my east near the border of texas and louisiana, not so fortunate baud entecause inters is currently closed. You have to try to take the side roids north roads north try to get out. And if you havent evacuated by now, it is too late. Thanks so much. And just the size of the storm, biggest storm to hit the coast there in 150 years, could redraw the coastline. Yeah, it is one of the things that our reporters have been mentioning. Were still in the middle of a pandemic. Just unfathomable to think about. Well be getting a new update from the National Hurricane center about 25 minutes away, so where is hurricane laura headed now . Chad myers is tracking the stourm f storm for us. One thing that makes this different is how far inland it is supposed to go. Because it had so much momentum. It came off the gulf coast and rolled right on land. And i think what the surprise will be here, how much surge will be to the east. How much surge will be to the east of the eye because they just talked about how the water is not going up yet in lake charles. It was the center of the eye eastward that the surge is happening. But that water is coming up in lake charles. Something else for lake charmle, gusting to 135 for over an hour. That is an ef2 tornado over lake charles for an entire hour. And this is the destruction that well wake up to tomorrow because ive seen some pictures, the Storm Chasers are out there and buildings are destroyed. Lake charles is a big disaster zone right now and there is another side of the eye to come. About 130 Miles Per Hour still right now, it will move to the north, it will eventually get all the way up toward shreveport and little rock and la fayette, you will be in it probably 70 Miles Per Hour now, but it is still going up. It is the surge we talked about, 15 to 20 feet. The eye came on shore near cameron, louisiana. So the surge for holly beach and cameron and points east, 20 feet. And those islands arent even 20 feet high. So it would be unfathomable to think that that lot is left there. It will take some time, i know people are going we missed the surge. No, that water is still moving your direction. That wind is still blowing from the ocean, from the gulf all the way up toward you. And then finally by little rock by 6 00, 7 00 tonight, you get into 60mileperhour winds and that is not 130, but we will see power lines down, trees down. So many trees are shredded in louisiana that it will take a long time for power to come back up. It will take a long time to get out of places even if you did survive because the roads will be closed with power poles and trees and all that. You will have to cut your way out of there if you survive this, if you stayed because this is going to take a long process just to get to you. So lets get to the future radar, there is lake charles, there is alexandria. Moving up towards shreveport and up toward paine bluff later today. Even though the winds will have died to maybe less than 100, every time a storm comes over, the winds will pick up. It will be 70 to 90, 40 to 100, every time a storm band rolls over, there will be the potential for a tornado as well because the entire thing is a big clock. And so as it continues to move on by, the storms will continue to spin and toward warnings will continue to be posted and obviously well have significant rainfall. Not only are you pushing 20 feet of saltwater up these rivers, you will have to try to drain all of the rain that is coming out of the storm too. That will make the flooding in some spots even worse. All right, chad, thank you. And there is so much going on in terms of the storm. And josh is a storm chaser and he is joining us from sulphur, louisiana. What are you seeing there . How have the conditions dedoor deteriorated . Sulfur was the bullseye right you through the center of the hurricane. So we went to the front side versus the front eyewall which was ferocious. I saw palm trees just snapping out, windows breaking. And it was like this roaring sound like you couldnt believe. And then it calm for about a hour, it was dead calm. And now the back side of the hurricane is moving in, so the wind is picking up again from the opposite direction. You can hear it whistling and howling outside. So were about to go through the other half of the hurricane. Josh, what is the biggest concern right now . I imagine there is a lot, but is it the storm surge, obviously extremely dangerous, is it the wind gusts . What is most concerning for you . It is a great question because i was sort of wrestling with that in my mind. This area is very prone to massive storm surge. The locals didnt seem to worry about it at least right here in the town of sulfur, that was my biggest concern. And i have not seen any storm surge at our location. The water has not come up and flooded the building or the parking lot. So at this location, it has been the wind. It there is a lot of damage to the building. The winds were ferocious. And there are broken windows, walls from separated from the building, things like that. So here it is wind and im hoping it stays that way because once the water comes up, it is bad news. And weve been looking at unsurvivable storm subject is what the National Hurricane center said. And 3 to 40 miles inland, that is remarkable, that is the kind of water that can make new inlets, sort of redraw the topography where you are. Yeah, Southeast Texas and southern louisiana is some of the most dangerous territory on earth in terms of hurricanes. Because this whole place is basically a big marsh land with towns and cities built on it. So most of it is just a couple feet above sea level and so it is so vulnerable. I chase hurricanes and typhoons all over the world and i most dread chasing around here because of that, because it is so flat and the storm surge can just come rushing as you said up to 40 miles inland. So what do you do with that. The amount of people in danger from this thing is just incredible. And as you said, youve been chasing storms for nearly three decades at this point. Have you ever seen a hurricane like this . I mean i think it is tied for the worst in the last 150 years. This is going to become the new benchmark storm for this region of the United States. The past biggies were hurricane and you had i didn audrey in 1957, killed hundreds of people in the town of cameron. And the reason being, the main town was actually quite far inland and people thought that they were safe and hundreds died because of the surge. So lessons learned. And then hurricane rita made landfall and devastated the region again. But i think that hurricane laura just because of its intensity by far the strong he is on record for this region, i think laura is the new benchmark for this part of the United States. Soo much of the story still unfolding. And the sun will come up and well have to see what kind of damage there is, water rescues and the like. And this will be days and weeks potentially without power for some folks just given the shear size of the storm and the wind. Yeah, i hate to say it, but it will be a long tough road for the reasons you described. And the thing about the storm surge, it comes up and then it takes a long time to go back out into the gulf. So there will be flooding, it not like the hurricane leaves and then everything is nice. There will be a lot of water everywhere. And that will handle per the efforts to clean un. It is pitch black right now, there is no power. You just hear the crashing and howling. I cant imagine what this place will look like when the sun comes up. And before we let you go, it might be hard to tell, but did you have any sense of whether people took the warning seriously and got out in time . People there are obviously used to riding out tough situations, they have been through things like this before. But this one is different. Do you have a sense of whether people kind of hunkered down or got out . That is a great question. I had trouble getting a sense for it. One thing ill say, sometimes when hurricanes approach parts of the United States, you sense this mass panic in the air. Like you can taste it. You see the long lines at the gas stations, people hoarding, you know, supplies and all that. I didnt sense that. I thought folks in Southeast Texas, southwest louisiana, seemed rather calm. There were no lines at gas stations or anything else. It seemed like people were taking proper precautions. One thing ill say though a lot of people stayed here, there are a lot of people in this hotel. And the surge maps said that there was a chance that this hotel, this area would be under water. And when i talk to the locals, and i asked them so what do you think, i talked to a couple people who lived here their whole lives and they said that this area, it has never flooded before, we dont think that it will flood this time. I was concerned because laura is a stronger bigger hurricane than the previous ones that they have been through, but so far, i mean knock on wood, so far looks like the locals might have been right about this one at this location. All right. Josh, stay safe. Keep us tested. Thank you so much for your time. I know it is a harrowing night. In about 15 minutes, well get another update from the National Hurricane center and well bring that to you. Again, strongest storm in 150 years to hit that part of the gulf coast.
