I can tell you from talking to police, there are still incidents going on in this city at this very moment. There was a lot of chaos that happened in different pockets im told across the city even before the curfew because, remember, there was a curfew, 8 00 in new york city even before that was in place there was violence happening amidst all the protests. This is an example. I can tell you that if you were a business that didnt have wood boarded up, you pretty much were going to get hit by looters at some point within the evening. I do want to talk about that, incidents where theyre being attacked by these looters, by these criminals. Its kind of disturbing. It shows essentially at 12 45 in the bronx. The Police Sargeant is now in serious condition in the hospital with a head injury but other injuries. He is stable. Thats not the only incident of a hit and run. One happened in the west village. Were still waiting to get that number. More than 200 people arrested. If you look over here, you can see the cops outside of macys. Theyre standing close. Still five people were arrested inside macys last night. This is really chaos thats kind of getting out of control here in new york city. Talking to authorities, official sources, im hearing that basically these protesters, there are groups that are protesting and they are civil but then there are pockets of people who are coming in and have the upper command of saying an arcists breaking off into smaller groups until police cant follow them and then causing all of this criminal activity. This is essentially what the nypd is having to deal with amidst all the protesters trying to get their message across. Please keep us posted as news develops there. Breaking overnight. Two shootings involving Police Officers in st. Louis. Four officers were shot as hundreds of officers were looting downtown. All four officers there are expected to recover. In las vegas cnn affiliate kvvu says police are investigating two officerinvolved shootings on las vegas boulevard just before midnight. Police have taped off areas near the Circus Circus Hotel and another downtown by the federal court house. Nevadas governor has tweeted he is in touch with Law Enforcement and is monitoring the situation. In washington, d. C. , military helicopters patrolled the scene overnight. Cnns Boris Sanchez is live in washington for us. Whats the situation, boris . Reporter hey, alison. I want to show you the latest edition to Lafayette Park outside the white house. What appears to be an 8 foot fence to block access to the park from protesters. Sources indicate President Trump yesterday was angry at reports that he hid out in a bunker at the white house as protestors were clashing with police at his front door. Yesterday he showed force. He tried to show that he was in control as the nation is in agony. The president came out here, outside this Church Holding up a bible and posing for cameras. These are not acts of peaceful protests, these are acts of domestic terror. Reporter right before President Trump addressed the nation from the rose garden, police dispersed Peaceful Protesters with tear gas, flash grenades and rubber bullets just outside the white house gates. President trump threatening military force in any city or state that he feels isnt under control. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them. Reporter by most accounts the protests were peaceful, but moments before trumps speech military vehicles were seen near the white house and as the president spoke, bangs and helicopters could be heard in the distance as Police Officers in riot gear broke up the demonstrations before the d. C. Curfew was to take effect. The reason . A photo opportunity so the president could walk across the street to st. Johns Episcopal Church which had been damaged by a basement fire the night before. He stood outside a church and held up a bible before posing with administration officials. The bishop who oversees the diocese outraged by the president s actions. The president just keeps a bible and a text of the Judeo Christian tradition at one of the churches of my diocese without permission as a backdrop to a message anthetical to the teachings of jesus and everything that our church teaches. He used the insur rex act of 1807. Some feel that does not apply. My understanding is they cant do that without the approval of the governors and i can also tell you that its probably not going to happen in a lot of our states. Many governors upset by the president s calls to send the military to states and feel his language is further stoking fears and tensions. In a heated teleconference monday trump blasting governors calling them weak. Youre going to arrest all of those people and try them. The way to dominate. If you dont dominate your city and your state, theyre going to walk away with you. Hes been a miserable failure. What i talked about on the call today was the fact that his rhetoric is inflaming passions around the nation. He should be calling for calm. He should be calling for bringing the temperature down. Hes doing the exact opposite. Reporter very quickly i want to show you that theres still a Police Presence just outside Lafayette Park. Theyve been questioning people who drive by, stopping traffic, keeping the area closed off. Back to President Trump, a Senior Administration official denied to cnn that what we saw last night was an orchestrated photo opportunity. They say they just wanted to get the protesters out of the way early. Keep in mind, before being hit with the tear gas the protesters were peaceful and standing out here well before the 7 p. M. Curfew. Boris, such an important point. Im glad you reiterated it there. It was a peaceful protest before curfew dispersed by tear gas, rubber bullets and flash grenades. It was a largely peaceful night in minneapolis following a plea from George Floyds brother for the violent protests to stop. The autopsy says the death was a homicide but they differ on what caused it. Cnns omar jimenez live in minneapolis. That behind you, omar, is also the sight where george floyd was killed which has been peaceful for days now. Reporter thats right, john. Now we are basically coming out of the curfew here in minneapolis that went from 10 p. M. To 4 a. M. The people you see here behind me stayed out all night specifically between those hours in peaceful protest of that order that went into effect and as you mentioned, this is at the intersection next to where George Floyds final moments played out on camera there. While this demonstration was largely peaceful, thats not all we saw over the course of last night in places across the country. Reporter protesters continuing to take to the streets. Amplifying their death and anger. Floyds death was ruled a homicide by the hennepen medical examiner and the medical examiner. The autopsy shows that mr. Floyd had no underlying medical problem that caused or contributed to his death. Cause of death, in my opinion, is asphyxia due to compression of the neck. Reporter but the hennepen medical examiner said floyd died of cardiopulmonary arrest without explaining what caused his heart to stop. Overnight curfews forced 20 states to break up. Protests were largely peaceful and in some States Police joining in solidarity. In atlanta some officers were seen taking a knee before renewed violence. Unrest and clashes were on display in many cities. Police firing tear gas in this city sending them scrambling off the highway as police cleared the peaceful protests outside the white house as thousands of demonstrators marched in new york city, others looted some of mid town manhattans iconic stores. Similar scenes in los angeles. Earlier in minneapolis Terence Floyd for the first time visiting the very location his brother took his last breaths overwhelmed with emotion. Whats his name . George floyd. Reporter before saying this to demonstrators. If im not over here blowing up stuff, if im not over here messing up my community, what are yall doing . What are yall doing . Yall doing nothing because thats not going to bring my brother back at all. Reporter now in regards to violence and fires that we saw in places across the country, Terence Floyd was saying lets do this another way. While we still did see some arrests here in the minneapolis area, things were largely peaceful. In regards to the dual autopsy reports we have seen, the Hennepin County autopsy report saying floyds death was basically due to Heart Failure while the independent autopsy saying it was due to asphyxiation. A memorial set for thursday. Reporter both reports saying they believe it was a homicide. We have a lot of news developing at this hour. This comes after peaceful protestors were tear gassed outside of the white house so that President Trump could stage a photo op at a church. Joining us now, civil rights activist deray mckesson. Great to have both of you with us this morning. Police used tear gas, julia, and rubber bullets on these Peaceful Protesters around Lafayette Park could go out from your National Security expertise, what did you see here . I think you disconnected me. Deray, can you hear us . Tell me what you saw last night. Let me just start by saying that the reason people are in the street, it is shocking to see donald trump use his power to do what he did last night to just attack peaceful protestors. Weve seen all across the country a colossal failure of leadership. Weve seen it in the white house. Weve seen mayors put these curfews in with one hour time to get people home. This is a setup thats happening. They werent looting or attacking anything, they were dispersed using the tear gas, smoke grenades and rubber bullets. You have stores being smashed in, looting. We have these examples of stores being shot. Whats the connection . The connection is there is tremendous unrest. So what you generally would want is mayors, governors and a president aligned in bringing down the temperature. Talking to the community, giving enough information for the curfew. So that people are prepared and have an outlet. What President Trump did yesterday is he denied an important outlet for lawful protestors and then created an image that this was a war. People are suffering and utilizing the military or the threatened use of the military. He knew exactly what he was doing and one of the most objectionable things is the joint chiefs of staff general miley was there with him. That was a subtle threat. You saw miley trying to take it back overnight to say basically what the president had done was not respectful First Amendment rights. The president is suffocating peaceful protests. So wasnt the attorney general. Yes, oh, gosh. The president said, im activating him. Hes activating the attorney general very strongly. I dont know what that means. Barr looks like hes in a candy shop. Its disgusting. Its disturbing. Its a weird sense of macho that they think they have rather than actually utilizing their leadership to try to. The president s threat of the insurrection act. That was a threat. He has threatened that against what a governor would want. Thats lawful under the insurrection act. Its the president always going to the far edges of his authority. I dont think hes going to get there. He does not know how to govern. That is what happens now. He rachets up. He has the henchmen in the form of the attorney general and others to sort of satisfy that sort of base desire by the president to not solve a really difficult problem. Deray, youve been on the streets and in ferguson during protests that were peaceful. Central manhattan stores were smashed in. Were still getting information about Police Officers being attacked in different ways in different cities. So. Whats the right way to keep that from happening . We should be clear about whats done. Weve seen a lot of Property Damage in the protest. When we think about it, the idea that what mayors and electeds should be doing, we dont need more meetings. They can ban chokeholds tomorrow. They can change use of force policies. They can negotiate Better Police contracts so theres more accountability and they actually refuse to. The tactic of meet with us during the day is a stalling tactic. They said that to us in 2014. You know what happened since 2014 . The police have killed more people, not less since then. If you want the protests to end, youd do something that would end police violence. I tell you from all of the mayors that ive seen, the governors, ive gotten calls from electives and i have not seen a lot of commitment to end the crisis. They think a curfew or a couple of boxing people in is going to be the thing that stops the protest. I saw Laurie Lightfoot say we neat better communications. Use of force policies makes things better. Theyve been unwilling to do that. 28 cities ban choke holds. Those are interesting. I hear what youre saying about fundamental change being needed. Something else interesting happened, julia, regarding the police yesterday. They pulled their officers. They crossed the bridge away from dc, to come back and said the county is reevaluating the agreements between the white house and dc allowing our officers to be put in a compromising position that endangered their health and safety for a purpose not worthy of our mutual aid obligations. That is interesting and im just not sure how this ends. If police are refusing to follow the president s orders and if the president says hes calling in the military and if peaceful protestors are being fired on with tear gas, im not sure how this ends. Yeah. I think thats everyones concern. Mutual aid never envisioned that you would have armed forces. Active military. How does this end . A lot of what was said in terms of longterm reform, i do believe that all of them are peaceful. I dont think its going to end before the funeral on thursday. I think its continuing rallies and protests. I think the president doesnt want it to end, allison. It ends either because people realize whats going on and they stop protesting, which is not good or the president keeps rachetting it up. He does not want this to end. This is what he wants. It will keep rachetting up. I think the solution has to come from the ground unfortunately. We really appreciate your perspectives and expertise. Thank you very much. A very different scene playing out i
