If anybody is going to take on joe biden or whoever ultimately takes up the sort of center lane hasnt mantle, they have to figure out who it is going to be. Talking about distinguishing themselves, weve seen different approaches to this. Senator Bernie Sanders talking about medicare for all, against senator harris what he called medicare for all light. Listen to what the senator said about her plan. I like kamela. Shes a friend of mine. But it is not medicare for all. It is medicare for all people as soon as possible. We think four years is as long as it should be, not ten years. Thats one of the reasons i disagree with senator harris. So there is a question right now within the Democratic Party about pragmatism versus trying to hit the home run and get everything you want on health care. There is another element to this, and thats President Trump, beating President Trump. Yeah. Which of these approaches do you think well see more of tonight . Which is ultimately more successful . Having a candidate who goes out and outlines their plans or having somebody who goes out and will challenge this president . I have to tell yeah, i think everybody after that completely disastrous first debate performance by joe biden has been a little surprised to see him rebound in polling in the way he has. I think that suggests that electability is going to continue to be the top question for a lot of democrats. On the other hand, you know, a hot of progressives see this as their opportunity to kind of get some big ideas into the political conversation. On the debate stage tonight with, you know, warren and sanders kind of squaring off, theyll also have a bunch more moderate people around them, you know. Beto orourke, who has cratered but, you know, could have a moment here. Mayor pete buttigieg, you know, and some others. Well sort of see a good contrast between the middle lanes and progressivism tonight. Its interesting as the president has injected race into the debate so much for the 2020 race, when you look at the quinnipiac polling, biden has 53 among black democratic voters. How important is name recknism a and electability . The conversation gets uglier. Name recognition is the single top thing. Getting name recognition is the top thing. Biden still has it. After the first debate, a lot of people are still meeting these candidates. When he faces off with cory booker on one side and Kamala Harris on the other, we could see more about race. Interesting to see if that means some of the support, particularly under black democrats, falls away. I dont think we should overlook the electability issue for minority voters. May be more so than for the Democratic Party as a whole. They might want trump gone more than anyone as opposed to voting for somebody, you know, who shares atry put rtributes with digging in on President Trump and race, you had a great piece which christine mentioned well tweet out so folks can read. It is how you believe President Trump is using race and stoking racial animus as a strategy for 2020. We can look at the tweets he sent yesterday about representative Elijah Cummings and about al sharpton and even Bernie Sanders, calling them all racists. I do have to ask though, because the perspective ive gotten from folks in the white house, in speaking to them, is that the media is projecting a lot of sophistication to President Trumps tweets that maybe isnt there. Strategy you mean. Like the actual strategy. They dont think hes thought through the attacks and he is simply watching fox news and sort of living us his instinctual response. Do you get that sense, that this is impulsive, or this is sort of 3d chess, as sometimes suggested . I dont think there is a checklist that he says, okay, today, lets g afteo after elij cummings in baltimore and lets go after the progressive women lawmakers tomorrow, check. I dont think there is strategy to that level, but certainly, you see in his tweets, a desire to go against people who dont look like him and who look like a lot of democrats, and to vilify places and to use language about places that stokes up his base. I dont think it is sophisticated in that he is saying, okay, heres what im going to do, this, this, and thr this, but you see his impulsivity creating a storyline that helps him sort of stir the pot with his base. Doesnt it almost feel like listening to sports radio or talk radio, where youre kind of freewheeling with ideas and jokes and insults . Were learning more this morning about the three people who died in sundays shooting rampage at the gilroy garlic festival. Trevor irby was a 2017 graduate from a college in central new york. His family said the 25yearold moved to california to be with his fiance. Another victim was keyla salazar, a 13yearold from san jose. The youngest victim was 6yearold stephen romero, who was playing in a bounce house with his mother and grandmother when all three of them were shot. His father, alberto romero, said he got a panicked call from his wife and then raced off to the hospital. Couldnt believe what was happening. Thought what she was saying was a lie. Maybe i was dreaming. They told me he was in critical condition, that they were working on him. Five minutes later, they told me that he was dead. Romeros wife and motherinlaw survived their injuries. The 19yearold gunman there created an Instagram Account days before the shooting and posted two messages shortly before the attack. One of the messages quoted a book from the late 1800s that says, white men must rule over those of color. Josh campbell has the latest on the investigation from gilroy, california. Reporter another week, another incident of Mass Violence in the United States. This taking place in gilroy, california. Were told by authorities that sunday afternoon, a 19yearold local resident made his way to the grounds behind me. This was a site of an annual festival some four decades old. Officers telling us that using a tool, the suspect was able to cut his way through a fence, bypassing security protocols that were in place. Once inside, he opened fire. He was quickly engaged by Law Enforcement officers within the span of one minute. He was killed but not before taking life of his own, to include two children. This remains an ongoing investigation. There are many threats to include the weaponry. Were told by officials this was an ak47 style rifle, which weve seen in a number of incidents in the United States involving the mass loss of life. Were told the weapon was purchased legally in nevada and brought to california. One other threat officers are looking at is whether this person had any assistance. There were witness accounts that perhaps there was an accomplice. That is something officers continue to run down as we speak. Finally, were hearing from the fbi that they are surging resources from around the country to this location to assist with this investigation. Specifically, were told theyre bringing in victim specialists to assist with those who may have been impacted, as well as forensic examiners. Were told this is a massive crime scene behind us. A large plot oft territory they have to go through and comb over to find spent rounds, look for evidence they can use to track the shooter and his movements on the day of the attack. American tourists accused of killing an italian Police Officer allegedly stabbed him 11 times with a knife brought into italy from the United States. Police say it was the result of a drug deal gone awry. Officer mario rega was buried in his hometown in naples in the same church he was married less than two months ago.
