Debate stage. Joe biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and south bend mayor pete buttigieg. M. J. Lee is live in miami with highlights of the first debate. M. J. Reporter good morning, guys. Ten democrats trying to maximize the very little time that they had to introduce themselves to voters, to talk about their policy ideas and to even try to have some break out moments when you didnt hear a lot of personal info, but there were a lot of disagreements whether it came to policy. Ten democratic president ial hopefuls tried their best to be heard taking on a crowded stage in miami. Leading this field, senator Elizabeth Warren. When you have an economy that does much for those with money and isnt doing great for everyone else, that is corruption pure and simple. We need to call it out. We need to attack it head on. Reporter the candidates barely mentioning donald trump. Well say adios to donald trump. The biggest problem is donald trump. Reporter it fizzled into testy exchanges. Julio castro emotional delivering his plan for Immigration Reform highlighting the father and daughter who drowned crossing the rio grande after crossing into the United States. Watching that image is heartbreaking. It should also piss us all off and it should spur us to action. If i were president today, i would sign an executive order that would get rid of trumps zero tolerance policy. Reporter the humanitarian crisis at the border and the policy of separating families kicked off an argument. Im talking about a comprehensive rewrite of our laws. Thats not true. Section 18, title 18 of the u. S. Code, tight 281 and tight 282 already cover it. No smuggling or drug trafficking. If you did your homework on this issue you would know we need to repeal this. Reporter new york city mayor bill de blasio blasting orourke on health care. Would you replace private insurance . No. I think the choice is fund 5789al to our ability. Private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans when you talk about the copays, deductibles, premiums, outofpocket expenses, its not working. Its not working. They can choose medicare. Congressman, you have to start by acknowledging its not working for people. Reporter de blasio and warren weighing in on eliminating private health insurance. Medicare for all. Health care is a basic human right and i will fight for basic human rights. Reporter senator cory booker getting personal about the gun control debate. Im tired of hearing people, all they have to offer is thoughts and prayers. In my faith, people say they will find a way. The reason we have a problem is weve let the corporate gun lobby frame this debate. It is time that we have bold actions and a bold agenda. Reporter army veteran Tulsi Gabbert slamming tim ryan. We cannot think that were going to somehow squash this taliban. I didnt say squash them. I didnt say squash them. When we werent in there, they started flying planes into our buildings so im just saying right now they didnt attack us on 9 11, al qaeda. Al qaeda attacked us. Thats why i and so many other people joined the military, to go after al qaeda, not the taliban. On abortion, senator Amy Klobuchar receiving a roaring round of applause. We do have one candidate thats advanced the ball and we have to have access for everyone. Senator klobuchar im fascinated by this. I just want to say theres three women up here that have fought pretty hard for a womans right to choose. Ill start with that. Reporter klobuchar winning over the crowd once again delivering this oneliner about President Trumps oneliner of the handling of iran. This president every single day is ten minutes away from going to war, one tweet away from going to war and i dont think we should conduct Foreign Policy in our bathrobe at 5 00 in the morning. Reporter guys, were going to do it all over again tonight with 10 other Democratic Candidates including joe biden, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris and pete buttigieg. Speaking about Bernie Sanders, his day is not going to be all about debate prep. Hell visit an immigration holding area. M. J. , thank you. Stay with us. Were going to talk more about night one of the debates with sarah esker. And john avlon. You have been here before and seen all of this play out before. How did you think last night went . When all you do when you watch these is you think back to the staff and what they are doing behind the scenes. Its like dropping your kid off for the first day of school. You walk them out. Cry a little. Awkward interaction, you wave goodbye and youll do wait. You pick them up. Did they get enough to eat. Did they like that snack you packed for them . You know what theyre capable of and you want them to do your best and then you just have to watch. For me, youre reliving those. When you watch beto get beat up by other kids on the playground, oh, no, my kid doe. What are they thinking . Who did you think had a good first day. I didnt think anyone actually improved their standing. Like i dont think well see a huge bump in the polls for anyone, if i had to pick a winner, its booker. Senator booker. I thought he introduced himself well. Showcased that he was a little bit different in tone and message. I didnt think warren did herself any harm and then there was sort of the what we will see as rant who some did very well. Delaney did very well. Do i think hes going to rocket up towards the top . No. If you are looking for a cabinet spot, you may take a look at him. Joe lockheart . Joe has not moved. Hes being very youve got him. Joe, what do you think . What are your major impressions . I think Elizabeth Warren did what she needed to do to kind of cement being the adult in the room. She scored points early. I think the moderates at the table really didnt challenge her in any way. I think there was a lot of talk about trump not being a big part of this. In fact, i think he was. His policies were called out consistently. All of the candidates seem to want to tell their lifes story in a way that is in stark contrast to trump, you know, who inherited, you know, a lot of money prfrom his dad. There were a lot of talk about Hard Scrabble youth and i think warren did enough because i think the pressure was on her to do enough. Otherwise id say Julian Castro was the most animated on the issue that seemed to captivate the crowd, which was immigration. John . I think booker had a strong night. Elizabeth warren was the frontrunner. Those trending in the polls did themselves a favor. Not just jewel yes castro. Congressman ryan had a very empassioned argument rooted in personal experience about the working class and the Democratic Party is seen as too elite. They need to reach out to the workers. Beto got why . It was the moment with julio castro . It wasnt just that moment. I think beto was right on policy. But he did seem like a convenient punching bag for folks because he came in as such a star and he had a tough time to convert. Key moment for me last night in substance together, hes given an answer about the public option. This is something barack obama wanted for his health care plan. Its insufficiently radical for folks who want to take away all private insurance, which is de blasio and warren. De blasio is pretty brutal. Rob did elaney says we need to preserve what works and changing what doesnt. Lets be radical and not practical. Beto i think had the worst night. A lot of the folks who had been really obscure show they had a place on the set. Look, im a data guy. Its not polling. Its google searches. If you look at this, cory booker was the most searched during the day. Tulsi gabbard was second. Beto orourke is third. Then down at sixth, a lot of people thought Julian Castro had a good debate. Google made sure to point out to us that searches on Julian Castro spiked 4,000 , m. J. , 4,000 over the course of the debate. If you are looking about improvement, its hard to argue Julian Castro did not have a huge improvement during that debate. Well, i mean, if you look at someone like Julian Castro, i think he was one of the candidates going into this debate with so much at stake because his candidacy has failed to take off so far, right . He has not had any momentum in the polls. He is not getting probably the kind of coverage that his campaign would like him to get. I think the fact that he seized on the issue of immigration to really make this forceful and powerful impression on voters who might be actually tuning in to exactly who he is for probably the first time last night, i think that was a really important moment for him. And, guys, one of the biggest take aways for me latz night watching this debate was just actually how far away the general election feels right now because the point of last night and sort of the big theme mat particulars of last night was really about the primaries. We didnt hear Donald Trumps name being invoekt very much. We didnt hear candidates going out of their way to try to attack the president , especially on issues like moral clarity, which i found surprising given the images of immigration and being separated from their families and pouncing on the Trump Administration and the policies over that over the last couple of weeks. Im surprised that that didnt come up more. I think it showed how much the debate stage was set to draw distinction between themselves before they can pivot. 494 days to the election im being told. Thats a blink of an eye. M. J. s point is they treated this as a primary. They have to be different. John, theyre going for it. The other nine candidates, its clear they dont think those are the voters that they need to win the primary. They may think of that. Its not what it may seem to be if youre focusing on identity politics in an inclusive way. This is obviously a primary debate. Its striking how few of them were reaching for the commander in chief test. This is what this is about. A credible candidate. Voters in wisconsin yet. Yes. Hold those thoughts. Stick around. We want to let you know you should also stick around. We have three of the president ial candidates coming up on new day. We have Julian Castro, beto orourke and jay inslee. It will be interesting to get their take as theyre waking up. This morning we have much more to chew on. What kind of avenue did they leave for tonight . Like joe biden. Stick around. Ten candidates. Were back and im a data guy. What other piece of data do we have last night . Who talked the most . Cory booker spoke for, you can see it up there, 10 55. He was number one. Way down at the bottom was jay inslee with 4 52. He spoke twice. What does that tell us . Hes a talker. They all got the same amount of time. Did he interrupt or they directed more questions . I think they directed more questions, perhaps, and also that booker did seize the moment. Joe, what does it mean in terms of in terms of how the candidates chose to approach it versus how we perceived it . Well, i think there was an attempt by msnbc to focus on the higher polling candidates, Elizabeth Warren really dominated the first hour. I think its not so much the amount of time, its when they have that time. I think after about an hour i think most people, you know, its sort of all blended in a little bit. And its not just how much time you have, its what you say. Jay inslee made two great points. One was Climate Change was his issue. He said donald trump is the greatest National Security threat to the United States. So people remember moments as opposed to, you know, this person spoke for six minutes, this person spoke for eight minutes. I wouldnt take too much meaning to that. Again, i think the timing of it with warren dominating the beginning. The beginning of the debate felt like, you know, Elizabeth Warren, what do you think . All of the other candidates needed to react to her. While it really was dominated. Some believe Julian Castro had a great night and he was able to move the needle. Lets take a look where he went after beto orourke about the immigration policies. Listen to this. Title 18 of the u. S. Code, title 21 and title 22 already cover this. I think you should research this issue. If you did your homework on this issue you would what did you see Julian Castro doing, sarah, in that moment . You know, i actually it was a it was a little hard to hear. I never like cross talk in debates and i thought when de blasio entered, i wondered if there would be a response. Some people liked it and for me it was cling worthy. Its like when a guy takes your armrest on the plane. I felt like he was strategically going after beto orourke. I did, too. He had a stronger molt when he was talking about the immigration. He said, we should be pissed off. I thought he was going to try to do a moist eye thing, he didnt. It pivoted and translated well on tv far more than the cross talk. What he did there was to prove or try to prove that this is the original moment. Lets play that right there. Watching that image of oskar and his daughter is heartbreaking. It should also piss us all off. If i were president today [ applause ] and it should spur us to action. If i were president today i would sign an executive order that gets rid of trumps zero tolerance policy, remain in mexico policy and the metering policy. The metering policy is what prompted them to make the risky swim across the way. Hes also, john, were talking about a moment. Thats right. I do think because he said we should have our hearts broken and we should be pissed. Then he had the policy right. Heres what i would do to change that. Heres how trumps policies possibly led to that moment. Charles, did you think by going after beto he made it look like h
