the rest of the week. details in a moment. it will be dealt with and has been dealt with internally. this is being addressed internally. >> the white house unable to put the brakes on the story that could have been resolved last week. pressure builds from john mccain's colleagues to apologize for mocking his cancer battle. bizarre split screen. celebrations in jerusalem and devastation in gaza. more protests this morning. we have reports from gaza, tehran, hawaii and england on a very busy tuesday. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm dave briggs. >> i'm christine romans. may 15th. we start in washington the first lady melania trump recovering at walter reed medical center for a treatments on a benign kidney condition. no complications. mrs. trump is expected to spend the rest of the week in the hospital. our chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta finds that unusual. he says the patients with this type of procedure are typically hospitalized for just one night. >> this procedure is not really surgery. it is basically threading the catheter near the kidney and injecting a glue-type substance to try to stop blood flow near the kidney. the benign is good. we don't want it to be anything other than benign. what is it that was treated here? the benign things to a kidney. cysts. it is not treated in this manner. was this a mass? was it something else? >> so many questions. the first lady's hospitalization caught everyone off guard. she has been out in public frequently lately attending the state dinner for the french president and greeting three u.s. detainees from north korea last week with her husband. president trump tweeting heading to walter reed to see our first lady melania. she is in good spirits. thank you to all of the well wishers. we, too, would like to wish the first lady a speedy recovery. it has been five days and the white house refusing to apologize for the aide who dismissed senator john mccain because quote he is dying anyway. the silence from the administration and aide kelly sadler enflaming the situation. the white house focusing on the leak that broad sught sadler's remark to light. even referring to members of his staff as trait ors for leaking. >> kellyanne conway selling the same message. she expects changes because of the leaks. >> some leaks exist to hurt colleagues. some exist because they disagree with the policies put forth. none is helpful. this is not leaking, but using the media to shiv each other. >> you expect personnel changes as a result? >> i do. yes, i do. >> sources tell cnn kelly sadler's job is safe. raj shaw reluctant to say much of anything. >> i understand the focus on the issue. it will be dealt with and has been dealt with ininternally. the matter has been addressed internally. it is internal matter. i don't have anything further to add. >> has she been reprimanded? >> you c >> can you explain how it is addressed? >> if i explain that, it will not remain internal. >> try to untwist that pretzel. we have phil with us live from washington. here is what the president tweeted. the so-called leaks from the white house are a massive overexaggeration put out by the fake news media to make us look as bad as possible. with that said, leakers are traitors and cowards. he called edward snowden and chelsea manning traitors. try to make sense of it. >> if we are doing political analysis by 280 characters. this shows two diverse paths. president trump says on one hand there is not a problem here. then he turns around and says the people causing the nonexistent problem are traitors and cowards. pick a side and decide which way it will be. clearly this is a problem when you have leaks about meetings designed to plug the leaks in the white house. it is clear a lot of administration staffers are willing to talk to the press. i'm going to take issue with the idea that anyone who leaks is somehow a traitor or coward. the fact is everyone in the white house leaks. even top level staffers. if you leak, you are taking into your own hands your own fate. that could lead to you losing your job. this seems like rambling. >> i thought it was interesting. no leaking from the east wing about the first lady and a lot of folks say that is the level of respect and admiration in the east wing and the west wing it is the opposite of that. just leaking and leaking. as kellyanne conway said, people trying to shiv each other. let's talk about the zte reve e revers reversal. this is fascinating to me. the president wanting to save chinese jobs. he wants to help zte because u.s. suppliers for zte. two weeks after the commerce department said they would not sell the phones on the u.s. bases because of the concerns. the head of the agencies would not recommend americans use zte phones for national security reasons. listen to this. >> will you raise your hand if you use products or services from zte? none. you lead intelligence services. that is a bias question. raise your hand if you feel americans could should zte services? thank you. >> this administration with a commerce department got tough on zte. banned it from u.s. supplies for seven years. what is this? >> this is more like a condo salesman trying to do international relations. this is incredibly dangerous. zte was kicked out of u.s. markets because they violated sanctions and did business with iran and north korea. a colleague of mine points out if trump is willing to turn a blind eye with zte in the fact that they are a front for chinese intelligence, he is clearly not paying attention to those intelligence briefings and more interested in a deal and moving on. this is dangerous. this is a bad precedent. i'm all for free trade. i'm for free trade when it doesn't threaten national security. >> it could be the north korea issue. he needs the chinese help with north korea and he is willing to use this as a bargaining chip for other things he needs? >> we exist in a massive economy. china is a huge trading partner. obviously the zte pushback is hurting their economy. a myriad of other things this president could do that would not require us to go against the advice of all of the intelligence community. >> politics could be at play here. the president wanting relief from the farm belt who got hit hard by the chinese. a lot of tangled webs here on the zte story. >> who knew trade wars were so complicated? >> they are easy to win. we will check in with you next half hour. peace seems more out of reach than ever in the middle east. just as the u.s. opening the embassy in jerusalem, protests along the gaza border. israeli defense forces opening fire on palestinian demonstrators killing 59 and wounding thousands. the israelis blaming hamas for inciting terror attacks. we have cnn's ian lee with more along the gaza strip. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we are waiting to see if people come out here. yesterday at this time there were thousands of people here. thick black smoke behind me. today it is calmer. we are expecting the funerals to happen within an hour's time. that is where a lot of people are right now. yesterday was the deadliest day in gaza since that 2014 war here. a lot of people reeling from that violence. we talked to some of the people over in the camp here who spent the night out here. they say they are still energized, but wondering if they still have momentum to keep this protest movement going. yesterday, with that violence, you had the white house blaming hamas and hamas blaming the united states for the bloodshed. when you talk to people, there is a lot of anger of the current situation in gaza. gaza is under israeli and egypt post blockade for over a decade and anger over the embassy move. we will see if that anger comes out and translates today with protesters gathering. right now, dave. it is calm on the border. >> ian lee, thank you. who can forget the chemistry between superman and lois lane? >> don't move! oh, sure you can move. don't fly away. >> remembering actress margot kidder next. i feel a great deal of urgency... i think, keep going, and make a difference. at some point, we are going to be able to beat als. because life is amazing. so i am hoping for a cure. i want this, to uh, to be a reality. um, yeah. mitzi: psoriatic arthritis tries to get in my way?
