>> his mother overcome with grief. fans asking if the game he loved contributed to his death. >> a hero throws a tackle in a walmart parking lot. the iraq war vet trying to stop a suspect with a knife who took a woman's purse. >> but up first, al qaeda unmasked. in just four hours, the world gets to see a massive stack of documents from osama bin laden's compound. for the last 12 months, the documents were analyzed by intelligence officials and this morning, at 9:00 a.m. eastern they'll be posted online. we're told the information includes digital, audio and video files, printed materials, recording devices and handwritten documents. nic robertson live in london this morning. nic, peter bergen previewed those bin laden documents. in them, osama bin laden says we need to extend and develop our operations in america and not keep it limited to only blowing up airplanes. it's terrifying. >> reporter: it's absolutely terrifying. one of those documents, he says, specifically to his sort of und underlings, if you will, it would be nice to nominate a brother to look after the plots in the united states. we've seen the nsome plots foiled. the united states remains a target but knows they have to look at another way of targeting it. >> check out this bin laden quote, nic. the americans have great accumulated expertise, a photography of the region due to the fact they've been doing it for so many years. they can even distinguish between houses that are frequented by male visitors at a higher rate than normal. pretty sketchy and paranoid, right? >> totally paranoid. this is bin laden's concern about al qaeda's training camps in the border of pakistan and afghanistan, the waziristan area. we know also from the documents as well, he gives specific advice to his son, 20-year-old son hamza who's believed to be living in that area. he says he needs to move, get out of that area and only move when there's a lot of cloud cover. he knows the ability of drones and satellite surveillance to track people. he also says at one point, one of the documents, he's considering pulling most of al qaeda operatives out of that area because it's becoming too dangerous, christine. >> nic robertson in london. thanks. next hour, cnn national security analyst peter bergen joins us. he's one of the few people outside the government who's already seen some of these documents, actually. we're hearing from the u.s. ambassador to china this morning about the sudden about-face regarding chen guangcheng. who after leaving the embassy yesterday this morning is pleading with president obama to help him get out of that country. he says he doesn't feel safe there and that a deal that was struck between a u.s. and china is not going to protect him or his family. he also says he feels abandoned by america after spending six days holed up in our embassy in beijing. chen says his phones are being tapped and that his wife is being threatened by chinese authorities. he spoke to cnn's stan grant from his hospital room yesterday. >> translator: i would like to say to him, please do everything you can to get our whole family out. i'm very disappointed with the u.s. government. the embassy kept lobbying me to leave, he says, and promised to be with me at the hospital. but this afternoon, soon after we got here, they were all gone. >> for our part, the u.s. ambassador is responding to this. the u.s. ambassador to china's name is gary locke. he says all all points we were inten on carrying out his wishes and insuring we could put together something that met his needs. he said he wanted to stay in china. we asked him if he wanted to go to the united states. he said no. >> questions about whether the game is to blame for the death of a future nfl hall of famer this morning. former nfl linebacker junior seau was found dead yesterday in his home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. he was only 43 years old and leaves behind four kids. his grieving mother overwhelmed at a news conference yesterday. >> he never say something for me. junior! why you never telling me? i pray to god. take me, take me, leave my son alone. thank you. thank you so much for everybody. god bless you guys. >> still not clear whether any possible brain trauma played a role. this may have been the second time seau tried to kill himself. back in 2010 he drove his car off a cliff and survived. there were suspicions back then but police later concluded it was an accident because of lack of sleep. at 6:30 eastern we speak with former nfl running back jamaal anderson who knew junior seau. were all of the collisions over the 19 pro seasons too much? we'll take a look at that. we're hearing from the mother of a & m drum major robert champion. 13 people have been charged in connection with his death. two of them will face misdemeanor charges, though. champion's mother told cnn's anderson cooper she was disappointed with these charges. >> i was very, very disappointed. my husband and i both, you know, we had anticipated something that was a little more harsh. >> prosecutors say unfortunately this case does not support murder charges. the police say champion collapsed and died back in november after a brutal band hazing ritual. tears and testimony marking a dramatic day in the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards. his daughter, kate, reportedly leaving the courtroom crying yesterday, just as testimony began about a fight between john edwards and his wife elizabeth. in the courtroom, edwards turned to his daughter and mouthed the words i don't know what's coming. do you want to leave? >> congratulations there. like deja vu, isn't it, christine? heard that story before a week ago. jcpenney's may catalog is attracting pretty serious controversy. do you see anything unusual? you see a smiling lesbian couple, both women wearing wedding bands. the ad says wendy and her partner, maggie. the conservative group one million moms which is considered by some to be andy guy is accusing the retailer of taking sides and is now calling for a boycott of jcpenney. it is not the first time that one million moms has gone after jcpenney. they criticized them for naming openly gay talk show host ellen degeneres as her spokesperson. this is round two. any expectations that round two will be successful when round one wasn't? >> round one wasn't successful at all. there's no expectation that round two will be either. if there was any indication that round one was successful and hurt their bottom line they would not have continued with the same promotion. ellen was -- one million moms, 46,000 or less -- >> oh, it's small. >> fairly small, yes. if there had been a monetary loss for jcpenney, they wouldn't have continued with this campaign. this throws it in their face. not only were we successful but we're going to do it again. >> is this a sign of the times when jcpenney sees the bang for the buck is in this press coverage, bad or good. >> these ads have been going on in france. it's a sign of the changing times. these ads are in france, europe, all the time. no one has complaints over there. when ellen stood up and said why she was doing this, about three or four months ago, that clip immediately went viral and attracted millions of hits to people who otherwise didn't know about the story. >> for those of you who didn't get a chance to see it, it wasn't as though she was trying to be a spokesperson-to-gay americans, more she was trying to say, here's what i am. what were the values she was trying to espouse. >> the million moms think they know what i stand for. i stand for love, tolerance, respect for other people. it was a wonderful speech she gave. it sort of killed the million moms argument right there. how do you defend that? to come back and do it again is a phenomenal move on jcpenney's part. if you look on twitter right now, the trend is very, very much in jcpenney's favor. >> this irfavor. >> very much so. >> for those speaking out against the million moms group. >> correct. >> i don't know whether this was a cause or an effect or coinc e coincided but my guess it it wasn't coincidental that all of these people showed up at jcpenney stores to protest the million moms. >> of course. >> i think it's interesting, they're taking this as a way to protest against intolerance. the million moms, they're calling for conservative group trying to return to family values. what they're doing in a lot of people's eyes is promoting intolerance. >> who showed up in greater numbers? >> the buyers, people who came in to spend money at jcpenney showed up in much greater numbers. a lot of the tweets i was looking at right now currently say, going to jcpenney this morning, can't wait to buy at jcpenney. >> as a result of this. >> exactly. >> that's a boost in a certain group of people. how about those standing up for ellen? how about those who feel seriously about this cause. they don't like that these are the family values jcpenney are espousing. are they getting the headlines. >> they're not making a tremendous amount of leeway in making a difference. if they had, jcpenney wouldn't have gone to round two so publicly. the noise that is coming is being drowned out in much greater numbers by the audience going to shop. >> is mike and ike doing their two separate ways? >> that's true. >> they were avid takers of video of the launches? >> i have multiple copies of different launches. they moved down to florida in about 1984. i think they went to every launch possible and made videos of almost every one. >> let's listen to hope and steven's reaction when they realize what has gone wrong here. please note, again, we're showing you the final moments of the "challenger." it might be troubling. these are the final moments. listen in particular to the two people taking the video and what they're saying. >> oh, no. oh, no. something went wrong. they're coming back. oh, no. stay with it, steven. stay with it. oh, no. oh, my god, help them. >> then they began praying for the astronauts. you can here someone say stay with it, steven, knowing they were watching history. >> why did they never make this public? >> my first reaction is we've all seen the video of the "challenger" exploding. we've all seen it break apart. what we haven't seen is this through the eyes of somebody who was there. and i think what this video does, is it gives us really an experience of what it was like to be there on that day. >> the reaction. >> just to hear the reaction. when i was first watching this with our senior science editor, did she know her? was this a member of her family? it's almost like they knew each other, like a member of her family was going into space. i think that's among what's most compelling about this video, is that there was a connection between the two educators. >> and that's so amazing. tricia, tell me a little bit more about your aunt and uncle and what they would think about all of this hoopla about their video after all these years. >> i think she would be overwhelmed but also like it to refocus things on nasa, she would like to see that program continue. but she would be overwhelmed, i think. >> it's so nice of you to bring it to us. tricia hunt, thank you so much. steven, also, thank you so much for joining us. news editor of the huffington post. i'll try to get it out. >> christine, thanks. we are not far off from getting an unprecedented look inside the world of al qaeda like you have never seen before. 9:00 a.m. eastern time this morning, some of the documents that were seized in the raid on bin laden's compound last year are going to be posted online for you to see. they're being released by the army's combatting terrorism center. it's located at the u.s. military academy at west point. he's a human rights champion and a chinese dissident. chen guangcheng is now pleading with president obama to help him and his family get out of his country, china. chen says his phones are being monitored, his wife is being threatened and that a deal between the united states and china won't actually protect any of them. chen spent six days holed up in the u.s. embassy in beijing after escaping 18 months of house arrest. over 100 health care professionals in 7 different cities have been arrested and charged with bilking medicare and the tally? $452 million. this is the biggest medicare fraud bust in history. yes. wow. arrests apparently coming in from los angeles, chicago, miami, houston, tampa, detroit and baton rouge. here's a better story about medicine. how about this? >> the overwhelming impression, ashleigh, they were not living large. this was 24 people in this compound. it's a big building, but their beds were basically bits of plywood hammered together, no air conditioning. hot in the summer. few gas heaters, as it gets cold in the winter. growing their own crops. it was a squalored suburban compound. >> it looks like rudimentry setup. >> three wives were there. they all had their own kitchen and their own sort of bathroom facilities. >> hole in the ground bathroom? >> it was a hole in the ground. so, you know, you -- and there was medicine scattered about. there was a ferocious assault. >> you could see the blood? >> yeah, on the ceiling where they shot him through the head. you could see the blood marks sort of spattered on the ceiling. >> tell me about the most significant documents you had a chance -- by the way, they didn't let you see everything. >> they're not going to release everything. there's more than 6,000 documents. some of them were trivial, some of them were significant and some of them are still operational. >> what stood out the most? >> this is bin laden unplugged. you never thought these memos would end up in the cia. >> did he sound kind of average? >> 48 pages. he would write these massive memos, advising his affiliate groups in somalia not to use their al qaeda in their name. it's going to be tough to fund raise if you use the word al qaeda. >> a branding problem? >> a branding problem. >> before you move on from that, i want to read something from your book about this branding problem and the ideas that bin laden had for al qaeda. he went on to nominate some new names. these are some suggestions. monotheism and jihad group, monotheism defending islam group, restoration of the caliphate group. muslim unity group. >> a dozen names like that. i didn't put them all in when i wrote the piece. so, these were not great names. >> what was the matter with al qaeda? not to us, but say to -- >> he thought the obama administration had done a rather effective job of rebranding the war on terror as a war on al qaeda and its allies and he was concerned that somehow if you rename renamed it with an islamic title, it would be a war on an islamic group. >> does that mean that the battle for the hearts and minds early on in a war was working? >> they were losing the war of ideas. al qaeda was definitely losing. not because united states was winning but because al qaeda was killing so many muslims. bin laden himself was very, very aware of how damaging, particularly in iraq, to the al qaeda brand. >> just the muslim civilians, not, say, the american civilians? >> yes. he was advising somalia where you're going to kill a lot of civilians. this was a constant theme. >> drone attacks, there's been a lot made about drone attacks. there it's a big issue right now with afghanistan. from what you've been able to surmi surmise, they're working. >> he was writing notes saying get my son out of the pakistani region. >> everyone else fight to the death but my 20-year-old son isn't safe here? >> he should go to the safest place in the middle east, also one of the richest countries in the world instead of staying in the afghanistan tribal region. >> the last question is that the document does come out in the next 24 hours. people will be able to read a lot of the 6,000, not all. will it damage the brand? i follow this had guy. he was trying to protect himself and his son. >> the brand was already damaged but this will do more damage to it. >> i can't wait to read your book. peter bergen, thank you for getting up early and coming in to speak with us. christine? >> fascinating stuff, ashleigh. whether the game is to blame for the death of junior seau. he was found yesterday in his home dead from an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest. he leaves behind four children. still not clear if any possible brain trauma played a rolement this may have been the second time he tried to kill himself. back in 2010, he drove his car off a cliff and survived. there were some suspicions back then but police later concluded it was an accident caused by lack of sleep. at 6:30 eastern we'll speak to former running back jamal anderson, who knew junior seau. a college student from san diego is suing the drug enforcement agency for $20 million, after being left handcuffed without food, without water for nearly five days in a cell. 23-year-old daniel chung was one of nine people detained last month after dea agents raided a suspected drug house. he was never charged with a crime. >> he screamed hundreds of times for help. he began to dig into the walls, thinking he could get water that way. >> i had to do what i had to do to survive. >> the acting special agent in charge of the dea san diego office has apologized to chung. he was ordered an investigation and says he is deeply troubled by this incident. tears and testimony marking a dramatic day in the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards. his daughter, kate, reportedly leaving the courtroom yesterday, crying, just as testimony began. testimony about a fight between john edwards and his wife, elizabeth. in the courtroom, edwards turned to his daughter and mouthed the word, i don't know what's coming. do you want to leave? that's when kate left the courtroom, wiping away tears. that fight took place in an airport in 2007. she was fighting breast cancer and it was just reported that edwards was having an affair with rielle hunter. minnesota twin, overpowering fashion, striking out nine batters in a 9-0 win. the second no-hitter in the majors in less than two weeks. ashleigh? could there be anything to explain these? a lot of people are talking about the head hits. he was a linebacker. >> no, he was. junior was a linebacker for a number of years. he was a physical, physical, ferocious player, a very intense player, the type of guy you would be assured of, if anybody on a football team was going to give 110% and be as physical as possible on the football team, you could count on it being number 55 in junior seau. i've got no answer, christine, for the things that have transpired in his life in any form or fashion in a negative sense. but to say that i know the type of person junior seau was and the type of person he tried to be on a continuing basis. this is a shock to so many people. frankly, when the news hit me yesterday and i got a phone call, i was like, who? you're talking about what? there's so many people that are so surprised. obviously, it was heartbreaking seeing his mom on the news last night. and just -- you know, anybody around junior seau, anybody who met junior seau -- when he was in atlanta, he made a point of calling me. hey, i'm coming in town. let's go play golf or go to dinner. same thing in san diego. i used his venue for an event i wanted to house. he was so open and welcome, had many, many mutual friends and family during the two and growing up in southern california. he was a guy i watched at usc and looked up to. >> so young. >> having an opportunity to play against him for the first time in an nfl game. everybody was just like, wow, it's junior seau. >> 43 years old. i think there's eight players from his original team who are gone under the age of 45. >> unfortunately, yes, junior makes the eighth player from the san diego chargers '94 super bowl team and terribly unfortunate irony that the number of guys who have passed now -- i don't know what happened. i'm waiting, really, really waiting to see what happens with this police investigation. i don't know what junior's mental health was like at the time. i can't speak to that personally. i just know who he is and the type of person he is. and i have my own thoughts and beliefs. i just would like to wait to see what happens with this investigation. i'm not prepared to say that co the other based on the type of person -- >> you don't believe he committed suicide? [ male announcer ] ocuvite. help protect your eye health. we're about to get an unprecedented look at the world inside al qaeda and inside the mind of its deceased leader. some of the documents seized in the raid on bin laden's compound last year will be released online by the u.s. military academy at west point. u.s. hero and dissident chen guangcheng is pleading with president obama to help him get out of china. a deal between the u.s. and china this week, he says, will not protect any of his family. he escaped 18 months of house arrest and was holed up in the u.s. embassy in beijing. two elementary school workers smacking a special needs student in the face several times. the video was captured on school bus surveillance camera. it shows the women struggling to put a safety harness on this child. the alleged victim is a 10-year-old boy, who is not able to speak. two women have been arrested and charged with assault and battery. >> you can bet that video will be played at the trial. florida governor rick scott is rejecting a request from the mayor of tampa to ban guns in the downtown area while the republican convention is going on, in august. governor scott telling the mayor that conventions and guns have been coexisting since america's birth and will continue to do so. accused of stealing absentee ballots in his city's primary last year. douglas campbell is the mayor of austin, indiana. police say he conspired with a sanitation worker and both men drove to homes, asking residents to hand over their ballots. one woman says campbell filled out her ballot for her. he says he's innocent. high school lacrosse player in florida has been suspended for sucker punching another player. in ft. lauderdale, the video shows the player he knocked out for less than a minute and appeared okay. he has been suspended from classes for at least a week. hollywood's elite by doing this. getting down on your knees, posing for pictures s for yourn star on the walk of fame. she will next be seen in the movie "hitchcock." she'll play that role of actress janet leigh. i cannot wait. a mom arrested for taking her 5-year-old daughter to the tanning booth. she says it was all a big misunderstanding. what's the headline here, christine? it's on the cover of both new york tabloids this evening, toast of the town. >> one of our crusade she's hot. >> she's warm. >> accused of causing burns to her young daughter by taking her into a tanning booth. she claims the whole story is a lie, that her 5-year-old daughter got sun burned outside on a very warm day. i will say it was 90 degrees on that day in april in the area when this happened. she admits she took the girl to the salon but waited outside the booth. the little girl. she admits to taking her daughter along with her on errands, including the grocery store. she could face a decade in prison. >> this is the reason, though, that the story is getting such traction. that little fair-haired girl, standing next to her mother who truly looks like she's been painted or something. >> i know. >> wait till the video pans over. look at that picture, people. it's not a joke. it's not lighting. it's not makeup. it is truly what she looks like. i think that is maybe why the story is getting more traction. >> $99 pass, she could tan as much as she wanted. the local place, tanned about 20 times a month, two-thirds of the time. they're sick and tired of all this publicity, people staked out, taking pictures of the tanning salon and they would rather she goes some place else now. >> i would suggest she shouldn't go to another tanning booth for a while, athe least not until this case is over. it's not looking good. a lot of you are going to like this. sharks with lasers. i am not kidding. check it out. marine biologist and a celebrity shark handler named luke triple decided to answer a challenge on facebook. it's not a joke. the picture is real. he attached a low-level green laser to a lemon shark. all of this happening off the coast of the bahamas last month. took the photos for proof. you may be wondering why. he wanted to prove he could do it but also wanted to test out his scientific clamp and see if sharks did avoid laser energy as other sharks swam by. there are scientific applications. the bigger story is that it is just so cool and awesome. you know, i have one simple request. and that is to have sharks with freakin' laser beams attached to their heads. now evidently my cycloptic friend tells me that can't be done. >> that is why it's so cool. also commission the velocity and real time of sharks. there are scientific applications. it's not just as ywesome cool, awesome possible, apparently.
