And we will have much more on brazil just a little later. But first, states in the u. S. Are shifting into reopening. Joining me now is cnn medical analyst dr. Jonathan reiner. He is a professor of medicine at George Washington university. So good to have you with us, doctor. Thanks for having me. So, lets start with the issue of masks. President trump retweeted criticism of his democratic rival, joe biden, for wearing a mask on memorial day. Mr. Biden responded by saying the president is stoking deaths by mocking him for wearing a mask and needs to lead by example. Whats your response to that . I think mr. Bidens right. The president , for reasons that only he knows completely, has taken the wrong side of this mask controversy. What we know with clarity is that masks prevent the spread of this virus. This is a respiratory pathogen, and masks prevent the spread of this virus from people largely who may be asymptomatic, unknowing that they have the virus, to other people. Asian countries have used this strategy to vastly reduce the amount of coronavirus in their populations and to put this pandemic down. And for reasons that only the president fully understands, the president has at best issued mixed feelings about Wearing Masks in public and whether he thinks it makes him look weak or, somehow, it interrupts his narrative that were getting back to normal. Hes giving the wrong message to people around this country, and his messages have repercussions. When the president speaks, people listen to him. And when he doubts the necessity of wearing a mask and when he, frankly, refuses to wear a mask in public, people emulate his behavior, and that results in the spread of the virus, and undoubtedly has cost lives in this country. And doctor, whats interesting is a recent quinnipiac poll shows that 64 of americans believe that masks should be required in public. And we now see japan. You mentioned asian nations. Japan is being viewed as a Success Story with people there Wearing Masks. They bow instead of shaking hands, and they follow really good hand hygiene. They also take shoes off in the home. Should we all be following that sort of behavior to try to control this virus while we await a vaccine, the big hope . Absolutely. I think, you know, rather than painting a picture that, you know, were opening the country and were moving back to normal, we need to really set more realistic expectations and create a new normal, and were going to transition this country to sort of an interim place where we learn how to function safely in this higher threat, higher viral threat environment, and that includes wearing a mask when we go out, really anywhere, trying to keep our distance from people, redeveloping commercial enterprises that also value these safety features. The centers for Disease Control now says antibody tests might be giving the wrong results perhaps half of the time, and we still dont know if a person is immune, of course, if they do have a positive result, but talk to us about the medical response to this new finding on antibody tests. Yeah, very interesting. We do think that if youve had the virus, you will develop antibodies. Thats the immunecompetent person. Thats what our system does. The issue is, when the fda and the cdc encouraged commercial enterprises to develop antibody tests, they encourage this in a manner that did not require rigorous testing before the release of these tests, and many of the tests are really insufficient in terms of having enough positive predicted value, being Accurate Enough to really, truly understand whether the person who is being tested has these antibodies. And if you see testing a group of people, where the incidence of the virus might be relatively low these are people who maybe never tested positive, maybe the worry well and you couple an imperfect positive Predictive Value with a low incidence of disease, you often get sometimes a 50 50 chance that the test is correct. So, were not really advocating Antibody Testing on any kind of large scale right now. Dr. Jonathan reiner, thank you so much for talking with us. We appreciate it. My pleasure. Now, we mentioned joe bidens reaction to the president mocking him about wearing a mask. It came during an extensive interview he did with cnn. Hes a fool, an absolute fool to talk that way. I mean, every leading doc in the world is saying we should wear a mask when youre in a crowd. I think youve got to the president s supposed to lead by example. And i watched the president yesterday wearing no mask, you know, and saw him making fun of the fact that i wore a mask. The truth of the matter is that i think youre supposed to lead by example. And you can find the full interview at cnn. Com. Well, police and outraged citizens faced off outside a precinct in minneapolis, minnesota, late tuesday. Officers fired dispersant at a crowd gathered to protest the death of george floyd, a black man who died monday in Police Custody shortly after a white officer was seen kneeling on his neck. Cnns team witnessed people throwing debris at officers. A bystander captured video of the Police Holding floyd to the ground as he repeatedly says he cant breathe, and the men holding him down do nothing. We warn you, this video is very disturbing. I cant breathe why you got him down, man let him breathe, please, man. I cant breathe. Ive been trying to help out. I cant breathe [ inaudible ] one of my homies died relax. I cant breathe, my face what do you want . I cant breathe please. I cant breathe. [ bleep ]. It is so disturbing. And that video goes on for ten minutes, people standing nearby can be heard pleading with the officer to get off him. Police say floyd died at a hospital a short time later and that no weapons were used at any time by floyd or the officers. Four officers were involved and all have now been terminated from the force. Well, the family of george floyd wants the officers charged with murder. Ultimately, they want a conviction. Floyds brothers say the officers losing their jobs is not enough. They could have tased him. They could have maced him. Instead, they put their knee in his neck and just sat on him and then carried out. He screamed, mama, mama, i cant breathe, i cant breathe, and they didnt care. So, i dont i just dont understand what more weve got to go through in life, man. They didnt have to do that to him hes a gentle giant he dont hurt anybody he give his last to anybody. They didnt care they treated him worse than they treat animals they took a life, now they deserve life i dont feel sorry for them. They hurt me and they hurt my family. I cant take nothing back. I cant get my brother back. Again, we say neck, but the knee was on his throat. Weve got to tell it like it is, and im tired of this crying on tv, and this hurts all of us deeply. And you know, look, we just need murder, complete charge them with what theyve done, because you know what, they can go home to their family. My brother said earlier, we dont get to see our family. We dont get to see him, see his family. This upsets the community where were from, houston, and the family. And this hurt me that im crying on tv, another we are, another black family going through this nonsense. Just a heartbreaking situation for that family. And the bystander video doesnt show what happened before floyd was taken down. Minneapolis mayor jacob fray says how the officers restrained floyd was against department policy. U. S. President donald trump is fuming after twitter factchecked tweets he posted about mailin votes and voter fraud. Mr. Trump tweeted in usual fashion, claiming twitter is interfering in this years election by labelling some of his tweets potentially misleading. The president also said twitters actions are stifling free speech, something he wouldnt allow to continue, he said. Cnn reporter Donie Osullivan joins me now to talk about all of this. Good to talk with you. Reporter good evening. For first time ever, President Trump is now being factchecked by twitter, beneath two of his tweets on mailin ballots. The social Media Company had a message linked to a page saying, get the facts about mailin ballots. You can see it there in the blueprint. So, why did twitter decide to do this now, after all of this time and after many thousands of false and misleading president ial tweets . Reporter yeah, thats right. This is twitters first time factchecking its most prolific user. Twitter has tried to make it clear to say that if there is misinformation about going to the polls, about misinformation that could in some way confuse people about how they should vote or to deter them from voting, that that would be banned from their platform. So, today, on tuesday we saw twitter place two very small labels underneath tweets from trump where he talks about mailin ballot voting, where he says that that would lead to voter fraud. He doesnt give any evidence for that, and that is why twitter puts this factcheck in there. But i mean, you will see that the labels themselves are pretty small. Yeah, they most certainly are. And whats interesting is President Trump was particularly busy tweeting over the memorial day weekend holiday, attacking his political rivals and spreading conspiracy theories. Lets just listen to this exchange regarding baseless allegations directed at former rep Joe Scarborough, regarding the death of a congressional staffer years ago. Lets bring that up. The woman who died who youre suggesting that Joe Scarborough was responsible . Yeah, a lot of people suggest that. And hopefully, some day people are going to find out. Certainly a very suspicious situation, very sad. Very sad and very suspicious. Question, please . Have asked you not to tweet about it anymore. Please go. Mr. President , have you seen the letter that was written by her husband, begging twitter to delete your tweets, talking about how hard its been for his family, for him to deal with that . Yeah, i have, but im sure that ultimately they want to get to the bottom of it, and its a very serious situation. And as you know, theres no statute of limitations, so it would be a very good thing to do. Just reminding everyone, this is baseless, and twitter hasnt cracked down on this or any of mr. Trumps other conspiratorial tweets, so how likely is it that that will change . Reporter that is the incredible thing. You can see twitter on tuesday sent a new precedent factchecking trump when it comes to voter misinformation and says thats against the rules. But if he accuses somebody falsely of murder, that seems to be okay. And thats even when the widower of this poor staffer who died in just tragic circumstances in 2001, wrote to twitter and said, you know, this is ruining my wifes memory, the memory of my wife. Twitter came back on tuesday and said, you know, were very sorry to hear about the hurt that this is causing, but essentially, its not going to do anything. And you might ask, well, why wouldnt twitter do something about this . And i mean, i think, frankly, twitter is afraid of the president , because you can see even from tuesday, when they factchecked the voter misinformation tweet, trump was immediately out there saying, you know, twitter is attacking freedom of speech, they are rigging the election. And i mean, of course, the Trump Campaign was immediately out with messaging as well. And you know, twitter and Silicon Valley were really, i think, afraid of regulation and what the Trump Administration could do to them. We shall see if its the beginning of something new or just a oneoff. Donie osullivan, thank you for talking with us. Appreciate it. Thank you. And you are watching cnn newsroom. Well get back to more coronavirus news in just a moment, but first, lets get to a developing story in hong kong. The vote on a Chinese National anthem bill has been pushed back to june 4th. Thats according to a Legislative Council document obtained by cnn. Protests have erupted in the heart of the citys Financial Center over the bill. The measure would seek to criminalize insults against chinas National Anthem. So, lets go now live to anna coren. She joins us now from hong kong. Anna, whats been happening and whats the scene there right now . Reporter well, rosemary, we have moved to corday bay, a busy shopping district not far from where we spoke to you last hour. In the distance, you can see crowds of protesters who have been chanting slogans like hong kong independence, its the only way out. That is something that weve been hearing. It is no longer five demands or six demands. It is now calling for independence. This, of course, is in the wake of beijing saying that this National Security law that its proposed is going to be enforced on hong kong. A short time ago, rosemary, we were following the protesters as police came in, and one of the protesters was arrested right in front of me. Police were spraying pepper spray, which has sort of been their goto over the course of the day. I got hit with pepper spray. Other members of my crew got hit with pepper spray. Its not a pleasant experience at all, a real burning sensation, but this is how they have been dispersing the crowds today. We heard from police they have arrested 240 people to date, and remembering, too, that the reason everyone turned out was for this National Anthem bill being debate edebated. That is due to be debated over four days. The final vote, however, will now take place on june 4th, next week, which is the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in beijing. This is incredibly controversial to be placing the vote on that particular day. Many people feel this is just rubbing salt into the wounds. Hong kong protesters, if sunday was an indication, if todays any indication, considering police have arrested around 240 people, they will not be allowed to gather on the fourth of june to show their respects, to hold that vigil like they have every single year since the massacre. The only place in china where they have been allowed to gather, but police are not allowing any type of assembly of people. Every single protest that weve been to throughout the day and we havent seen any violence, rosemary. I think thats very important to note. This is just people gathering, people chanting slogans. One person started playing the anthem to hong kong, glory be to hong kong. Police ran in and detained her. I mean, we are seeing a police force that is showing zero tolerance. And as joshua wong, who i spoke to earlier, he said, this is now a police state. We are living in a police state here in hong kong. Rosemary. Yeah, theres a lot of concern across the globe as we watch whats happening there on the streets of hong kong. Anna coren bringing us the very latest there. Appreciate it. Well, the last british governor of hong kong, chris patten, says the uk should stand up to china. He hopes the country will raise the question of hong kong at the g7 meeting next month. Take a listen to how he describes the current situation. Well, there are a lot of things that struck me. First of all, china, which has broken its word or rather, the communist party of china, which has broken its word about so Many International agreements, is driving a coach and horses through the International Agreement that it reached with britain in a treaty launched at the United Nations to safeguard hong kongs high degree of autonomy, its rule of law and its freedoms for 50 years after 1997, and its simply not carrying that agreement out. Meanwhile, beijing is wearing countries to stay out of its affairs. A short while ago, Chinas Foreign Ministry spokesperson said it would take necessary countermeasures against any foreign interference. You are watching cnn newsroom. Is edging closer to a grim milestone, 100,000 deaths from covid19. Johns Hopkins University reported 693 new deaths across the country on tuesday. And while the infection and death rates are slowing overall, new cases are still trending up in at least 14 states. Brazil has recorded a higher daily coronavirus death toll than the United States for a second consecutive day. The country reported over 1,000 deaths on tuesday, bringing the nationwide toll to 2,450. But as Nick Paton Walsh reports, the official numbers dont tell the full story. Reporter this is a landing of last resort, seeking salvation in a coronavirus hotbed. Tiny planes bring the sickest Covid Patients from hundreds of miles away deep in the amazon to manous, brazils worsthit city, and to a hospital bed, a journey most make alone, from which some wont go home. This is what doing well looks like on these flights, moving. The woman on board struggling, motionless. Once they had to intubate a patient in midair. Its very hard to carry a weight that you dont see. Every time i carry this weight, i feel like i carried this weight. Reporter they arrive in a city mired in not only death, but also fury. Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has made fun of the mass graves. They had little option when the bodies piled up. They buried 103 in one day, digging at night. Even in two hours, five come, one by one, laid in the trench. Many mourners say those arent coronavirus deaths, but its hard to know here. The official numbers in brazil dont tell the whole picture, partly because there isnt enough testing. You can see that here. These are those who have died and have tested positive for coronavirus, but these graves, staggeringly, well, theyre the ones that they suspect may have died of the disease. The mass burial itself distressing. Around 30 minutes. I just want to put my mom there and finish this. We dont need this. My family doesnt need this. Reporter we asked the grave diggers who thinks fewer would have died here if the president had kept quiet. No one listens to bolsonaro, one says. Hes not there for the people, one adds. He should have asked us whats going on. The hospitals see a daily stream of new patients, these from local villages where tribes live, badly hit, too. The icu, which avoids ventilators, where possible, using less invasive means, is frenetic. And even the patients have heard what the president said. The mayor is just trying to save lives, says raymondo, and the president is against that. Inside, a local indigenous leader visits, newly adopting the role from his father, killed by the virus two weeks ago. I took my father into hospital where he was intubated for five days, he says. Now we have 300 people with symptoms. Politically, the president forgot us and is killing the indigenous people. Bolsonaro insists he is for Economic Growth and safety, but the virus is still tearing through the poor here. Their remote way of life with no protection from this modern plague. It just put help further away. Nick paton walsh, cnn, manous, brazil. To europe now, and germany has announced it will extend social distancing restrictions through june 29th. A limit of ten people or two households will be allowed to meet in Public Places until then. Cnns Frederik Pleitgen is with us now from berlin. Good to see you, fred. So, whats the reasoning behind this extension of social distancing restrictions . Reporter hi, there, rosemary. I think most of it is because Angela Merkel wants to be very careful when she starts slowly reopening this country. One of the things weve heard again and again from the german chancellor. She said, look, weve come this far, weve achieved so much. Obviously, germanys death toll still being very, very low from the novel coronavirus. Lets not jeopardize the gains that have been made. At the same time, i think you could almost say, rosemary, that Angela Merkel and her government are almost a victim of their own success, because now many of these state governors are saying, look, we really want to open a lot faster, we want to open a lot more than has been possible in the past. They believe that the virus is currently under control. And now what they want to do is they want to save their economy. Theres one state in particular in the east of germany that says, by june 6th, they are going to end all of the restrictions that have been in place and theyre going to open everything up. Theres some other states that are thinking about doing the same thing. So, while youve had that united front, really, here in germany, between chancellor Angela Merkel and a lot of the very powerful state governors and of course, this is a very federalist system here in this country we can see that that is kind of crumbling right now as some of them want to move very fast to reopen while others say, look, lets not do this too fast to not risk another outbreak and to not risk another wave of infections coming here to germany and possibly another lockdown as well. Very interesting political situation here in germany. Of course, also a country that, while it looks at all of the Health Implications of the coronavirus, also very much interested in saving its very large and exportbased economy as well, rosemary. Yeah. Were certainly seeing a lot of that impatience, arent we . And fred, whats the latest on the possible lifting of a blanket travel warning in germany . Reporter yeah. Massive issue here in germany. In fact, where im standing right now is in the center of berl berlin, and theres a demonstration by tour Bus Operators thats going on today who are simply saying, as long as these travel restrictions in europe are in place, the tour bus industry and a lot of other travel industries, of course, as well, are simply dying. In fact, i saw one bus go past that said, standstill is death. They say they pretty much lost all of their revenue and they need that to come back. Otherwise, a lot of these companies simply arent going to come back. One of the things to keep in mind is here in europe, the tour bus industry has been a massive growth factor as more and more people have been traveling, but other industries are the same. And theres a lot of people, of course, who are looking forwards summer holidays, whether or not those are going to take place. A lot of other european nations, of course, also looking as to whether or not germans will be able to travel to their countries, places like spain, portugal, france as well. And the travel industry is really, really big, so you can see that unpatience. Unclear whether or not that decision on allowing that travel, lifting that ban, is going to be made today, rosemary. Frederik pleitgen joining us live from berlin. Many thanks. Well, british Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to be questioned by lawmakers in the coming hours after refusing to sack his top adviser, dominic cummings. Cummings decision to travel outside london during the coronavirus lockdown has kicked off a political firestorm. He says he isnt stepping down, despite growing calls for his resignation. Cnns Nic Robertson joins me now live from london. Good to see you, nic. Whats likely to come out of the grilling of the Prime Minister and can cummings survive this increasing pressure . Reporter i think cummings survival will last, you know, for the near term, but i think over the longer term, thats a bigger question, you know, how will the Prime Minister handle today . Well, we know what happens when the Prime Minister gets put under pressure of questions. You know, hes sort of got this style of bluster and manages to sort of push his way through questions. He does better at Prime Ministers question time when hes got a big audience behind him. This will be a virtual meeting. He wont have that. These will be senior mps who really want to scrutinize him on some of the issues around his handling of coronavirus. But he only has 20 minutes of questioning on the issue of dominic cummings, his chief adviser. So, i suspect that the Prime Ministers going to try to sort of bluster his way through that and, perhaps, not suffer more political damage. It completely depends. If he makes a mistake, then that will very much count against him. Opinion at the moment, majority of Public Opinion at the moment is that the Prime Minister has got this wrong, that his chief adviser should quit. Thats a very wellheld view here, and thats a big shift over the past couple of days and another significant shift for the Prime Minister, popular view is really of the opinion at the moment that this government is not doing a particularly good job, and thats damaging for the Prime Minister. Hes still ahead of the Opposition Leader in most of the polls, but this is not a position any Prime Minister would want to be in. And i think, perhaps most significantly, one in ten of Boris Johnsons own mps, lawmakers, they also say that hes handled this badly. One in ten is not so damaging, but when the public is so opposed to the position the governments taken, at time when the government needs public confidence, thats not a good look. Yeah. Many brits see it as a double standard, dont they . Nic robertson joining us live from london. Many thanks. Well, the french government plans to spend almost 9 billion to bail out the auto industry. President Emmanuel Macron made the announcement, which includes incentives to boost sales of electric and hybrid vehicles. Compared to the same time last year, sales are down 80 , leaving almost 400,000 new cars sitting idle. In return, the car industry is expected to keep production in france. The kids have really stepped up and filled that void. Reporter already suffering from collapsed wool and lamb meat markets, wade aliason has 4,000 ewes to care for on his sprawling ranch, but hes missing half of his workers. They couldnt make it into the country from peru. When we first all started hearing about the coronavirus, it was like, oh, okay, whatever. But as we know its impacted us in different ways. Reporter the sixthgeneration farmer says hell only have three qualified men to care for his flock through late fall. If we dont have the people to help us harvest these crops, we dont have a crop. And if we dont have a crop, america doesnt eat. Its that simple. Reporter dairy farmer ron gibson knows his pain. Hes the president of the utah farm bureau. Gibson says people underestimate the importance of highly skilled guest workers. They know our fields. They know our crops. They know how we harvest. They know our animals. They know everything about what theyre doing. I dont want my tomato pickers performing heart surgery on me, but i surely dont want a heart surgeon picking my tomatoes. Reporter gibson says the pandemic has caused visa processing delays. That, combined with Coronavirus Travel restrictions in central and south america have created a serious labor shortage for farmers across the country. Ive had a lot of people come up to me and say, man, unemployments so high, you guys probably have a lot of people that want to come work on the farm. I havent had one person from my Community Come to me during this whole crisis and say, can i have a job . Reporter curtis ruley is struggling with something else, the safety of his workers. One of my biggest fears this year is if one of them gets sick, then how many more are going to get sick . Reporter some of the mexican workers he hired manage to entry the country and get to his utah orchards before delays took hold. With the number of men we have here right now, we cant afford to have even three of them get sick and not be out working. Reporter after arriving from mexico, workers were quarantined for two weeks. Rowley emphasizes handwashing and has added more housing facilities, creating greater space amongst employees. He also checks workers temperatures and routinely asks if they have any symptoms. We still have that hope were going to get the fruit harvested, people are going to get the best product they can get. Reporter back on the aliason ranch, the lambing season is nearly complete. The family hopes to get through a few more difficult weeks, and eventually have the rest of their workers on the ranch. For now, though, his children are taking up as much slack as possible. Even if school starts, i told the girls, youre not going back to school anyhow, because weve got to take care of this at this point. Cnns sara sidner reporting there. And cnn newsroom continues after this short break. Were back in a moment. The National Hockey league here in north america has revealed its plan to restart the season with 24 teams heading straight into the playoffs for the stanley cup. Now, this comes as the National Basketball association considers a possible world cupstyle playoff format when games resume. Cnns brian todd has our report. Reporter the Brooklyn Nets become the first new yorkbased major sports franchise to return to practice but with strict limitations from the state and the league. Only four players can work out at a time. One player under each basket. Coaches cant be there. The notion of a team practicing, its more individuals who are practicing. Its a small step, but thats all it is. Reporter the nba is now in talks with the Walt Disney Company about resuming its season in late july with all the teams possibly playing at disneys wide world of Sports Complex near orlando. Its almost like youre running one season right into the next season. And for Something Like the nba or the nhl, that becomes incredibly problematic, because when do the players take a break . Reporter on tuesday, the National Hockey league announced its going straight to a 24team playoff tournament in two yettobenamed cities. Major League Baseball is expecting a return to action around the fourth of july weekend with the season cut in half, no fans in the stands. Baseball previously had a plan to play all of its games in arizona. Now the plan is to play in teams home stadiums, but only in jurisdictions where the local governments and Health Officials would allow it. The nfl is preparing to start its season on time with fans but might have to make adjustments. The Miami Dolphins owner is optimistic. I think right now today, were planning on having fans in the stadiums. Reporter but from a health standpoint, is it all too much, too soon . In order for teams to be able to get back on line, you would have to have excellent testing protocols, planning for what happens if somebody gets sick, how theyre going to be able to manage it. Will they shut down if somebody gets sick . Reporter all considerations that the sports leagues are still trying to figure out. The dangers posed by players constantly running into each other, breathing on each other, are evident enough, but even if the leagues play in one or two locations each, what about interactions with people like Hotel Staffers who come in and out . It means theyre going to be having to be testing all of the hotel staff on a regular basis as well and that hotel staff should be Wearing Masks. Everybody should be Wearing Masks when in common areas. Reporter analysts say the country has been desperate for a return to sports since an nba game was canceled right before tipoff in early march, when a player tested positive for coronavirus. The game tonight has been postpon postponed. It sounds great right now to say, well have nba games in july, and well have major League Baseball games in july, and maybe College Football in the fall. That sounds great and its optimistic and its a fun thought, but there is no way for sure to know if any of that can happen. Reporter there are so many complicating factors in having these teams return that Health Experts are cautioning the people who run these leagues to start thinking about things that many of them are probably not thinking about right now, like whether the players families are going to be able to join them during their seasons in these isolated places, and they have to start thinking about the Health Issues regarding those families as well.
