CNNW Coronavirus Pandemic Worldwide Coverage May 4, 2020

Thanks for joining us. Some states are sprinting and some are jogging, but by weeks end, coronavirus restrictions will be loosened in more than 40 u. S. States. The road to reopening is being cheered on by u. S. President donald trump. Thats despite the virus killing hundreds of people in the u. S. Every day and the number of infections rising. I really think you can go to parks, can you go to beaches. You keep the spread. You stay away a certain amount and i really think the public has been incredible with what thats one of the reasons were successful, if you call losing 80 or 90,000 people successful, but its one of the reasons that were not at that high end of the plane. That number has changed, mr. President. Its going up. I used to say 65,000 and now im saying 80 or 09 and it goes up and it goes up rapidly. Well, the president s numbers fly in the face of his own covid19 task force. In an interview aired sunday, dr. Deborah birx repeated projections of the pandemic killing up to 240,000 people in the u. S. , more than 1,000 deaths have been recorded every day since early april. Johns Hopkins University says there are 1. 1 million cases nationwide. More than 67,000 people have died topping mr. Trumps earlier projections of 60,000. In the absence of a national program, seven Eastern States are banding together to coordinate the purchase of medical equipment and pretekttive gear. Theyre preparing for a possible second wave of the virus even as more and more states move ahead with reopening. Natasha chen has our report. Reporter new York Governor Andrew Cuomo appeared in a virtual show of force and unity with his fellow northeastern government. Were going to form a consortium with our seven northeast partner states. Reporter cuomo also cited a cdc report to pour cold water on the china travel ban being a critically Decisive Action his administration took early on. What we have seen in new york didnt come from china but actually is a different strain of the virus that came from europe. The travel ban from china may have been helpful but the horse was already out of the barn in china. Reporter as the u. S. Heads into another work week, more than half of the states are heading towards reopening but it doesnt appear any of them have had a downward trajectory of cases. Today the doctor coordinating the administrations Coronavirus Task force once again urged the importance of that downward trend. As States Reopen we want them to follow the gating criteria. Reporter remdesivir received approval for testing, birx called it a first step forward. As far as operation work speed, the Trump Administrations ambitious plan to make 100 million Vaccines Available by november, but birx struck a tempered tone. On paper its possible. Reporter restlessness continues to mount defying a stay at home order. Spectators took to the national mall. On a sunny day in new york city, large crowds gathered in central park, many flouting social distance guidelines earning the ire of Governor Cuomo. How people cannot wear masks, that to me is even disrespectful. Its disrespectful. Reporter while Governor Cuomo offered good news in new york, hospitalizations under 10,000 for the first time in march, he cautioned against the false sense of comfort, especially as more nice days lay ahead. My gut says the weather is going to warm, people are bored, people want this over, they see the numbers going down, they can take false comfort. Oh, its going down. That means its over. No. No, we never said it was over. Reporter you heard Governor Cuomos strong feelings about wearing facemasks in public but requiring them to wear masks in other part of the country has received backlash. Store employees were threatened with violence when they tried to enforce it. In ohio an order requiring customers to wear masks in stores was reversed. Governor dewine said that was too far though store employees will be wearing facemasks. The u. S. Is accusing the Chinese Government of intentionally concealing the severity of the coronavirus while it stockpiled imports and decreased exports. Homeland security reports says china likely cut its exports of medical supplies prior to notifying the World Health Organization about the spread of the virus. Well, tensions have been mounting between china and the u. S. Over the handling of the pandemic. On sunday the u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo accused china of hiding details of the outbreak. Listen. We can confirm that the Chinese Communist party did all that it could to make sure that the world didnt learn in a timely fashion about what was taking place. Theres lots of evidence of that. Some of it you can see in public, right . Weve seen announcements, the fact that they kicked journalists out. People who were trying to report on this, medical professionals, did this. This is classic communist disinformation effort. That created enormous risk. Now you can see hundreds of thousands of people in the world have been armed. President trump is very clear. Were going to hold those responsible accountable and well do so on a time line that is our own. Joining me fromramoyne. A professor in epidemiology at ucla and a director of the global and immigrant health. Thank you so much for being with us. My pleasure. Doctor, more u. S. States are opening up this week despite the fact that about 2900 people died m this kunfully a 24 hour period from friday into saturday. We still dont have extensive covid19 testing in place and some americans are pushing back on wearing masks. Where do you see this going in the weeks ahead . Its a difficult situation. People are trying to i understand theres a lot of fatigue. Its been a long time for everybody to be inside. Nobody has had to deal with this before. It all makes sense why everybody is ready to get back to business. Peoples lives are at stake. That being said we dont have the testing in place we need, we dont have the Contact Tracing and the surveillance in place that we need. We dont have the therapeutics and we dont have a vaccine. We arent in a place where opening up makes a lot of sense from a Public Health prspective. So its a difficult situation and the focus should be moving as fast as we can to get them in place. Every minute we dont have it in place the more lives are at stake. White house coronavirus coordinator dr. Deborah birx says a vaccine by january looks possible on paper. What does ma mean . There are so many steps to getting a vaccine to be widely available to the public, we have to go through the necessary safety testing. The i mean, there are several stages. It has to go through animal studies, it has to go through preclinical studies, safety testing, there have so many different stages that it needs to go through for a vaccine to be determined to be safe and effective in a population before it can be available and so i think were in the early stages. Were seeing positive signs, data thats coming out that suggests that there are several vaccine candidates that could be useful. Its too early to say were going to have a vaccine by x date. I mean, it takes time to make something happen. I think everybody is getting creative. We saw it with ebola. Well see it here. We have to be effective and safe before it can be put into population. Dr. Birx reiterated that the white house said 100,000 to 240,000 people could die even with full mitigation measures in place. What does it mean now that most states are opening up and most mitigation measures will not be in place . Well, i think its exactly as theyve indicated. If we do a good job mitigating disease, doing mitigation as needed, we will likely reduce the number of deaths. But if we dont, we are going to see an increase in boldt morbidity and mortality. We unfortunately are not able to dictate that time line and are having difficulty being able to manage to get our arms around this because we dont have the testing in place. We dont have the ability to do the community Contact Tracing and case investigations that well also need to be able to do at this point. At this point were still behind the eight ball with the things we need to be able to do. We just arent there yet. I did want to ask you this. No one disputes the fact that covid19 came from wuhan china. President trump and u. S. Secretary of state mike pompeo are saying this coronavirus originated in a laboratory in wuhan but then has offered any information for that. Is there any Scientific Evidence to support such a claim . You know, this the question of where this virus came from at this point, i dont have any data to suggest it came from a laboratory. Theres been a lot of discussion with this laboratory. The Laboratory Said it didnt come from this place. Whether or not it was an accidental release, an exposure with somebody who was working on coronaviruses or whether or not it happened from natural spillover, we are where we are right now and i think that the big effort should be figuring out how to mitigate it. Fighting to figure out where it came from is interesting in terms of where it happened in the future. Do we need to be worry about the lab safety, or preventing pan dem mix before they start by looking at closing down wet markets. All of these things are true no matter what the answer is. We need to have really good lab safety globally. We need to be monitoring disease at the annal human interface. Id like to see the focus on figuring out how we move forward as opposed to worrying about where it came from. Actor tom hanks and his wife rita wilson contacted you about donating their blood to the convalescent center. They have done that and will continue to do so. How much hope do you put into convalescent plasma compared to the elusive vaccine that may or may not become available. Convalescent plasma is something that has been used for a variety of different illnesses in the past and so its certainly something we need to explore. Just like any other tool we want to bring to bear, we need good, clinical randomized trials to determine how well this works. I think its really important to have as many tools in our toolbox as we possibly can so its great to see all of these opportunities out there. There are a lot of drugs out there. Were seeing some very positive first steps with remdesivir and id like to see the same thing for plasma as well so we can see what the real answer is. Thank you for joining us. Its my pleasure. And you are watching cnn newsroom. Still to come, getting back to business across europe. Several governments start to slowly reopen after weeks of strict lockdowns. Com tv and never go to the post office again well, several European Countries are slowly lifting restrictions as governments look to get their economies up and running. In spain officials are launching phase zero of its gradual reopening with some businesses operating on a limited basis. On sunday spain reported its lowest daily coronavirus death toll in six weeks. France also now reporting its lowest daily number of deaths in more than a month. Still, the government is expected to extend the state of emergency through july 24th. It will not impose a 14 day quarantine. Italy is loosening some restrictions. Workplaces can be reopen provided they can enforce social distancing rules. Barbie nadeau and scott is joining us. Scott, talk to us about the situation in spain generally and where you are and the slow, gradual lifting of restrictions. Reporter sure, rosemary. Were on an island 30 minute ferry ride from ebitha. Before we got on the ferry we had to get our fingers pricked, everybody had to go through this same process in order to get on. Thats because for this island its one of the few places in spain, one of four islands only, that are allowed to move onto the socalled phase 1 of reopening which allows stores to reopen. The Perfume Store is opening for the first time in seven weeks. Its hard to under state how bizarre a scene this is to have stores like this just opening. Not business as usual. Other places can only open by appointment only. The main square, you can see theres a patio with people on it. I havent seen this in seven weeks. Obviously there are restrictions. They can only have the patios 50 full. There are a lot of empty chairs. This is definitely progress for this island. One of the other things people are allowed to do here is go to their place of worship. This church will be opening for sunday service for the first time in a long time. Its only allowed to be 50 full. This island only had 7 cases of coronavirus. On an island that relies so, so heavily on tourism, this island had to lock down like everywhere else. Right now its progress that people are able to get out and about. People are able to go out on restaurateur rass. The big problem is theyre missing the life blood, the tourists. They wont get them back for quite a long time. I just interviewed the head of the Tourism Bureau here, they said, this island cant survive without tourism. Something will have to happen for this eiland to get back on its feet. I asked her if testing is part of that, making sure everyone who comes onto the island is tested negative, shes not so confident in the reliability of those tests just yet. Shes waiting and seeing. That is a difficulty and thats the story were hearing. Scott mcclain, thank you so much for that report. Lets go to Barbie Nadeau in rome. Talk to us about how the italians are feeling about the lifting of these restrictions . Reporter i think theres a lot of caution today. People dont want to waste the last eight weeks. Theyve been locked down and able to contain the spread of the virus. Right now were in face 2. Thats could existing with coronavirus. You have behind me one of the most beautiful, bustling markets during the usual normal time here filled with tourists and stands. Its just barely open. Italy is a country on its knees trying to get on its feet. 29 Million People haay 18th ret open. Then maybe if all goes well on june 1st restaurants can start seating people inside. It feels good for a lot of people to be back outside today. Can understand that. Theyre being very cautious. Many thanks. Russia reported more than 10,000 new cases of coronavirus on sunday. The fourth record single day increase there in a row and that is despite a lockdown thats left the capitol, moscow, looking like this with streets largely deserted. Last week president Vladimir Putin extended russias isolation period through may 11th warning the peak is not behind us. Lets turn to cnns Matthew Chance normally based in moscow. He joins us now live from london. These numbers are extraordinary. 10,000 deaths in 24 hour period. That seems extraordinary. What is behind the numbers and what more are you learning about the pandemic across russia . The numbers are confusing. Not 10,000 deaths, 10,000 new cases. In the past 24 hours another 10,000. It brings them over to 145,000 people infected with coronavirus in russia. The actual number of deaths is much lower. Its more like 1300. Just over 1300 deaths which actually are remarkably low number when you consider russia has a population of 140 million. Thats led to all sorts of words of skepticism and Russian Society that these figures are not accurate, that the testing is not good, that its not comprehensive enough. The number of people dieing of coronavirus is being systematically under played by coronavirus. Theyre trying to prevent people from panicking. It was a Pivotal Moment when the mayor of moscow came out and said, look, i think that 2 of the moscow population may be infected and the real number of cases are 250,000 people. Thats the number of actual casualties were probably going to see when the figures have come out into the light of day in russia, not the daily official counts that were seeing coming from the russian Central Statistical Authority about the number of infections. Youre right. The number of infections increasing by more than 10,000 a day. Thats staggering. Thats what were seeing in europe and it boyds very badly for the final toll this virus is going to take inside of russia. Thank you for that clarification. 10,000 new cases of coronavirus. I misspoke on that. Matthew chance bringing us the very latest from london. Many thanks. Still to come, after trillions of dollars handed out in stimulus money, the Trump Administration is looking at whether americans need another round and we will tell you where that stands.
