Well take you back to fort mchenry later when he speaks at the ceremony. The mayor calls this a bad example because his city is still under a stayathome under. The president honored the fallen at the national cemetery. That was this morning. Last hour former Vice President appearing in two months paying tribute to newcastle, delaware. Both were Wearing Masks. Well hit a numbing milestone. Well do so as america opens and as americans fill their beaches and backyard barbecues. The president threatening to pull the National Convention from charlotte because North Carolinas governor cant commit that his state is fully reopen for visitors and large gatherings by august. Open faster as the president pushed and open for good. It would have been millions of people. If we didnt shutdown. Would i shutdown again . We didnt know anything about it. I would have done the exact moves that i have done. I did it early. The president s words and actions all designed to push reopening. Reporter thats right. We saw the president continued that narrative today. This is a city thats under a stayathome order. The mayor actually asked i am sorry to interrupt. The president of the United States is speaking. I stand before you before this noble fortress of american liberty to pay tribute to the american souls who fought and died. The first lady and i laid a wreath at Arlington National cemetery. Now we come together to salute the flag th, they gay theive th so boldly. This majestic flag will proudly fly forever. We are joined for todays ceremony by secretary of defense, mark esper, secretary of interior, david bernhart, general mark millie and a number of Service Members and veterans of the arm forces. In recent months our nation and our world have engaged a new form of battle against an invisible enemy. Once more the men and women of the United States military have answered the call to duty and rai race to danger. Tens of thousands of our National Guard ms men are on th fro frontline of this terrible virus. As one nation we mourn alongside every single families that have lost loved ones including the families of our great veterans. Together well vanquish the virus and america will rise from this crisis to new and greater heights. As our brave warriors have shown us from the nations earliest days in america we are the captains of our own faiths. No obstacles and challenge is a match for this year determination of the american people. This permeates every inch of the hollow soils beneath our feet. This place more than 200 years ago, american patriots stood their ground and prepare a british invasion in the battle of baltimore during the war of 1812. Early on in september morning in 1814, the british launched an assault on this peninsula. From the harbor of 30 british warship attacked in stronghold, bombs burst in the air and the deck of one ship, a gallon Young Americans was held captive. His name was Francis Scott key. For 25 hours, key watched in dismay as a fire crashed down upon this ground. But through torrents of rain and smoke and the dinner battle, key could make out 15 broad stripes and 15 bright stars. Barraged and battered but still there. They stared down the invasion and the hell they had to endure. The fact is they held like no body could have held before. They held this fort. T independence would say Francis Scott key were so inspired by the sight of our flag and battle where the very grounds that he fought on became hollow and he wrote a poem, his ageless words became the anthem of our nation. T the star spangle banner. Every time we sang our anthem with pride, we renew the eternal bombs with loyalty to our fallen heroes. We think to the soldiers who spent their final moments on distant battlefields to keep us safe at home. We remember the Young Americans who never got the chance to grow old but whose legacy will out live us all. In every generation these souls kissed goodbyes to their families and loved ones. They took flights in planes and set sail in ships and marched into battle with our flag fighting for our country and defending for our people. American warriors carried that flag through ice and snow to victory at trenton. They hoisted up the mass of great battleship in manila bay. A Remote Island in the pacific ocean. From the philippines sea, from new orleans to normandy, from saratoga to saipan, from the battle of baltimore, americans gave their lives to carry that flag through waves and blazing fires and storms of bullets and shrapnels. They jump oed out of burning planes and left on live grenades. Their love was boundless and their devotion was without limits. Ar captain daniels grew up in florida decided to continue his service. Hi attended the Citadel College in south carolina. Soon he met a beautiful cadet rebecca. They fell in love, married, and had two sons. In 2004, daniel left for his second deployment in afghanistan. On the morning of may 29th, daniel and his team were pursuing a group of deadly terrorists when he was killed by an explosive device. This week is the 16th anniversary of the day that daniel made the supreme sacrifice for our nation. He laid down his life to defeat evil and save his fellow citizens. Today they have followed in daniels footsteps, both students at the citadel planning to serve in the military. Their amazing mom served 22 years of the army. To the entire edgars family, your sacrifice is beyond our ability to comprehend a repay. Today we honor daniels incredible life and exceptional valor. We promise you well treasure his blessed memory forever. Thank you very much for being here. Thank you very much. Please. Thank you. [ applause ] great family, thank you very much. Every gold star family here, our debt to you is infinite and ever lasting. We stand with you all day to come, remembering and grieving for americas greatest heroes. In spirit and strength and loyalty and love and character and courage, they were larger than life itself. They were angels sent from above and they are now rejoined god and with the kingdom of heaven. Where ever the stars and stripes fly and our schools and churches town halls and fire houses and national monuments, it is made possible because they are extraordinary americans who are willing to break death so we can live in freedom and live in peace. In the two centuries since Francis Scott key wrote about the sigte of our flag in battle they are given their own testimony of the meaning of the god. One was world war ii veteran, jim crepe. They took out four enemy tanks and two machinie gunnists that was loaded up. Jim brothers, jack, was wounded. He held his brother in his arms. He married and had children and became an engineer and talking young people about war. Jim said the flag to me is as precious as the freedom that the flag stands for. It is as precious as the thousands of lives thats lost defending her. It is that important to me. It gave me a value of life that i could and never gotten any other way, gave me a value of my lord and family and friends and loved ones and especially my country. What more could i ask, last month jim died peacefully at his home at the age of 94. We are joined by his grandsons, andy and ron. Please. Thank you very much. [ applause ] today we remember their sacrifice and moved by his beautiful words. Andy and ron, thank you for being here remembering your father and grandfather and what they did for us. From generation to generation, heroes like these poured out their blood and heart and tears for our country. For as long as our flag flies in the skies above, the names of these fallen warriors will be woven into its threats. For as long as we have citizens willing to follow their examples and carry on their burden and continue their legacy that americas cause will never fail and americas freedom will never die. We pray for the loved ones they left behind and with god as our witness, we solemnly vow to protect, preserve and cherish. This land they gave their last breath to defend and to defend so proudly. Thank you, god bless our military. God bless the memory of the fallen. God bless our gold star families and god bless america. Thank you very much. The president of the United States speaking on this memorial day at fort mchenry. You see the president there enjoying the ceremony after his remarks there. Hes paying tribute to fallen phfamilies and touching on the coronavirus threat saying we are against the invisible enemy. The president sticking to the telepromtepter there. This one here is solemn and fitting and the other one is full of hate and spike and grievances. Lets discuss this memorial day of the president s visit at fort mchenry with barbara star and john kirby. I will deal with the politics. Lets deal with what we should be dealing with on this day of this memorial day and soberness a sobriety in the middle of a pandemic. How we saw the president at Arlington Cemetery on this day when you as well as anybody understand how important it is to the families to stop by to say hello to visit if you will the fallen, it is different and not just at Arlington National cemetery but in other cemeteries around the country because of this pandemic. Well, it is john. We have seen president obama and Vice President biden when he was in office, President Trump of course and Vice President pence stopped by and visited families grave side at arlington. That was not possible this year given the efforts to maintain social distancing and some of the other restrictions. So, perhaps part of this event we have just witnessed in baltimore is an effort to hear the voice of the president of the United States on memorial day and hear those words you would expect from any president of patriotism and gratitude to the service of those in the u. S. Military. It is a difficult memorial day. It is worth remembering. In effort to keep the family safe who visited families and loved ones. Part of what we are seeing here now is the president giving voice to some of the events. Admiral, you keconnected the dots of this of this pandemic. On sunday i want to read a little bit from it. Memorial is about respect we show people who lost their lives defending our own ability. The important part to me was the lessons we should learn. The lesson that we owe from the fallen to learn from them. Right. I would not speak to combat for those who lost their lives. I choose to believe they would want all of us to live long, healthy lives and be the best we can for our country. In memory of that and memory to our sacrifices, we owe it to yourselves during this pandemic to come together and learn from one another. I think while the experience of military families is different than families that are going through covid is a different scenario. There are things of grief and loss and isolation that military families and particularly gold star families can teach the rest of our fellow americans and they want to do that. Barbara, it is considered treasure and honor and duty to be apart of the regiment to help with the burial. Some families have not been able to come for burials and others coming now and you have social distancing and the masks. Lets listen a bit. We can still be there for the families. There have been a few funerals we have done where no families have been able to attend due to the virus. Our heart goes out to them. We are very happy that at least we can be there for them. They were there for us. You have such deep experience at this. It is so important to give the fallen the appropriate farewell. Thats right. Ceremonial units that handle these difficult issues even the Mortuary Affairs team. When you talk to these troops, what you will find that it is their honor to serve theyll tell you, something they feel very much honored. It is tough to be at a funeral where no family members. We have seen a veteran died and no living family members can attend. These are people who have family members but could not come to the funeral grave side because of the virus. This is the age that we live right now. It is very grim business and i think it really also on this memorial day close to the point that for the fallen and families of the fallen, their major issues, when you talk to them, they want to make sure their loved ones and their service no matter how many years go by is not forgotten. Amen to that. Admiral, you marked memorial day twice because of a personal loss, explain why. A woman officer worked with me, lieutenant jamie lynn was killed in afghanistan. Memorial day is a day for me to remember her. Really for me memorial day is june 8th every year. She was an incredible bright and sbil gent officer who worked for me on the joint staff, she had a way of lighting up a room. When i got the call in 2013 from a mutual friend that she had been killed, it was like the switch was turned off. I was at a busy airport where time stopped, Jamie Leonard was a real terrific soldier, a great leader and a patriot. I miss her every single year. We onner hhonor her service the fallen this day. Thank you so much. When we come back. Memorial day is also for Many Americans the gateway to summer. The gateway this year is crowded beaches in the middle of a pandemic. I didnt realize how special it would be for me to discover all of these things that i found through ancestry. I discovered my great aunt ruth signed up as a nursing cadet for world war ii. You see this scannedin, handwritten document. The most striking detail is her age. She was only 17. Knowing that she saw this thing happening and was brave enough to get involved and do something that was eye opening. Find an honor your ancestors who served in world war ii. Across america is returning to beaches and barbecues. 50 states equal 50 different approaches of the reopening. Take a look at the map here. 18 states red and orange trending upwards. Ten in green trending in the right direction right now. It is the beige states that means its cases are holding steady. The average number of new cases in recent days you see in maryland, thats a decline, heading up which makes this scene a packed ocean city boardwalk potentially quite troubling. In ocean city, everybody wants to get out and about. The maryland case count we tell you right now is a little bit of a risk. Yeah, risky, john. We have been hearing from folks and they are worried as well. I want to show you how easy it is to social distance on the beach right now. It is cold and windy and cloudy. The sun is struggling to come out. We have to see how the conditions change things here especially when it comes to the boardwalk. I spoke to the mayor that this condition is working against them on the boardwalk where it is relatively to certainly distance right now. I want to show you this video from saturday entirely different setting condition and weather is much better, sunny and warm and 85 degrees out and appears to be much more crowded. City officials are trying to do everything they can to get people follow the policies of Wearing Masks and trying to get folks remaining socially distance here on the boardwalk. The city has done everything they can but now it is folks to do their their part. Well continue to watch the situation there and the cloud cover is keeping people apart there. Lets discuss this now with dr. Emily lane at the university of chicago. Lets walk through this on memorial day. Thats outdoors, right . The crowds on the boardwalk on the other day when it was sunny and 80s and people close together. Do you think people are better off if they can keep distance, better off outside than inside. Better off outside than inside. Outside has a lot more air flow and ventilations than what we get inside a building. That can make a little safer to have more people. Certainly there is morre risk from having ten people in a small room or gymnasium. Some people were getting a little bit close. People have more opportunity and choices and they can leave their home to do things. Many states you can sit down at tables and eat in a restaurant with social distancing. Where would you put that on the risk, high risk or low or medium . I would put medium to higher risk. Outside is better than inside. Anything where you can wear masks is better than when you cant wear mask. Eating requires taking off your mask. If you still want to keep a good distance and putting people at a lot of risk when we are chewing and talking, a lot of respiratory droplets being spread. It depends on who you are eating with and what the setting is. Can you go to a restaurant outdoors that have their staffs with a lot of precautions and a lot of hygiene where they have a policy of how to protect staffs and guests. If they protect the staffs they are less likely to be sick when they are serving you. We can make everything safer certainly i dont think restaurants is my first choice. Every parent in america has been dealing with remote learning. It is memorial day, there is no school today. Lets
