and i'm george howlell. thank you for joining us. militant fighters attacking from three difference have overrun the town and now they're threatening a strategic air because. hundreds of military advisers are stationed there and have been training iraqi troops. >> on friday u.s. helicopters had to be deployed. after the dust settled, as many as 25 militants were killed by iraqi ground forces. the pentagon says the base is secure but also admits that they are close to danger. he's go live to phil black in the northern city of iraq. can you tell us what you're seeing there on the ground? >> reporter: well george the situation here in northern iraq is somewhat different to that situation in the west of iraq. here in the north the situation is more stable, the battle zone more secure in that the kurdish forces have forced the isis forces back from a lot of their territory. they've dug in lines and they're now holding them. isis is still very much on the offensive, on if front foot moving forward capable of taking more territory. as we saw in al baghdadi yesterday. the iraqi security services in their efforts to retake the that town have only got as far as the perimeter. isis still controls the center of the town itself. boosted on line taking the police station and letting all of the prisoners go. isis launched a big attack yesterday, some 20 to 25 people wearing iraqi uniforms. the iraqi security forces dealt with the attack. it involved the u.s. apache helicopters as you mentioned, but only in a support role some media role providing the information of the movement of the forces on the ground. the pentagon has been keen to point out that its 300 or so military trainers located at that base were under no risk. sit a huge sprawl complex, city-like in size and scale. the attack reached the perimeter on one side. but the military personnel we're told were never under any threat because they were located at another point inside the base spom miles away. >> obviously al baghdadi was one of the few towns in the province that was still held by iraqi forces up until this point. what does that suggest about the advance of isis? >> reporter: well linda, it backs up what we really know. in that province and in the west isis has maintained considerable military momentum, that the local sunni tribes have been trying to slow down isis or take back territory, they haven't been able to do so. that's what this event shows, is that isis still has the capacity to launch major operations and claim new territory. they've done it yet again. no doubt the iraqi security forces will attempt to retake this town. but so far the president suggests that they will not be able to do smo in the near term. >> phil black joining us live. there are two battles going on in eastern ukraine. >> a cnn crew is recognizing incoming and outgoing artillery in the coastal city. another team in donetsk say there's been significant shelling there throughout this morning. they haven't stopped exchanging fire since the peace deal was rechd on thursday. poroshenko says that the cease-fire could be in jeopardy. listen. >> this is not just an attack of ukrainian civilian. this is attack of the means and results. and without -- after minsk the offensive operation of russia intensified. and we think -- we still think that the minsk agreement is in danger. >> meanwhile, rebel forces are putting leaflets inside shells demanding that the ukraineian troops surrender. meanwhile, a mother in eastern ukraine is asking what cease-fire after shelling killed her three young children while they took a bath. >> nick payton walsh went to the family's home in donetsk and he shares their story. >> reporter: it was here when this family got their first running water for a week and quickly made the kids a bath. two and a half years, seven and a 14-year-old their god mother explains. then the first shell hit. direct here on the bath itself. all three were killed but their parents were both in the front bedroom whose windows didn't even shatter. this civilian area is still being shelled here 34 hours before a cease-fire. the family is now a shell, numb in mourning. the tiny coffins ready for tomorrow. >> translator: i went to get them a towel in the other room. the lights went out. everything flew into the house. what cease-fire? i curse every day those who killed my children and all those of the country. people who want to live peacefully we lived, grew up, took our children to coolschool. these are not people. >> reporter: the father dennis is alone talking to himself. peeling vegetables for the wake. my grandchildren were killed she says. innocent. mr. poroshenko your cease-fire. any quiet the cease-fire may bring with ring hollow numb and mere hours too late here. >> it's difficult to see the conditions they're dealing with. the u.s. ambassador to ukraine tweeted a short time ago that the separatists are arm. separatists have a large fighting force with more tanks, armored vehicles heavy military and rocket systems than some nato and european countries. photos showing what he says are russian military systems being deployed in eastern ukraine. un secretary of yemen is on the brink of a civil war. >> and as instability grows in the country, more western countries have closed their embassies due to security fears. >> let me be clear, yemen is collapsing before our eyes. we cannot stand by and watch. >> his statement to the security council on thursday came as al qaeda linked fighters seized an army base in yemen housing 1,000 troops. the united states is one of those countries suspending operations at its embassy in 'em men. >> specifically against al qaeda in the arabian peninsula which calls yemen home. brian todd looks into it. >> reporter: documents and weapons were destroyed and all americans inside, even the marines evacuated from the country. analysts say before the pullout this embassy was often buzzing with intelligence operations now -- >> you can't put officer ons the ground can't go out to meetings. you can't go in the country. so we are, again i'll say it effectively blind there. this was a huge set back. bob booer says now that the embassy has by most measures closed dozens of u.s. intelligence operatives have left yemen when with them human intelligence. the cia won't comment. it's drawing major concern because al qaeda's dangerous branch operates out of yemen. al qaeda in the arabian peninsula claimed responsibility for the "charlie hebdo" attack and the tempt to place bombs in printer cartridges. both of those attacks targeted the united states. both almost succeeded. the master bomb maker behind those plots is still at large, still believed to be operational. and with the u.s. embassy evacuation analysts say that al qaeda branch is emboldened. >> they're taking advantage of the vacuum. we saw an attempt on one of the military bases in yemen. they entered the base stole the weapons and left and vacated. the base is controlled by tribes not the yemen military. >> reporter: and they just overrun a prison in yemen and freed six of their militants. their counterterrorism capabilities have been impacted by the chaos. but they insist they still have assets in place to counter al qaeda >> we do have some number of special operations forces that are still operating in yemen. >> reporter: and u.s. officials say they're still training the yemen forces. there are been drone strikes. but there is still a major void with few if any american intelligence officers on the ground to work with their ya men any counter parts. that was always seen as crucial. brian todd cnn washington. the news continues here on cnn. shot the man because they would not talk to him. the officer said ruth made the comments four months after the shooting while we was an inmate. >> the former deputy says ruth told him he felt bad about killing chris kile and chad little field. he admitted to the killings but pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. new york city has set a new record 11 days out a homicide. >> nypd says that's the city's longest streak since the department began recording statistics in 1994. the last reported homicide was on super bowl sunday february 1st. >> despite the positive record breaking news, there has been and uptick of shooting incidents compared with the same time period of last year. the un refugee group said fighters arrived by boat and started setting houses on fire. >> the humanitarian vehicle full of people was attacked as it tried to escape. the village was home to thousands of refugees fleeing boko haram. >> one advocacy group says these nightmares are not far in the past. >> human rights watch says the sunni soldiers raped more than 200 girls. >> the officials are denying these allegations. jessica king has more on the story. and we need to warn you, the details in this piece are graphic and disturbing. >> reporter: these women are being questioned about allegations of a nightmare, the brutal rape of more than 200 women and young girls by soldiers. the accounts reported by human rights watch this week are horrific. it happened in darfur. a bloody conflict there has killed hundreds of thousands. but reports of this mass rape constitute a quote, new low even for darfur. victims allege that the soldiered entered their villages looking for one of their own. soldiers came into homes, beat the men and took them away. and in the absans of many husbands brothers sons and friends, the soldiers raped the women and girls. they raped my three daughters and me a victim says. two of her daughters are under 11 years old. she continues. some of them were holding the girl down while another was raping her. they did it one by one. they beat the young children and they raped my older daughters another witness recounted. they put clothes in their mouths so you could not hear them screaming. these anonymous accounts are horrifying. yet many people aren't talking. human rights watch says it's due to a climate of fear that they could face beatings or even death. the un peacekeeping mission was allowed to investigate just once. a >> the one time the peace keepers were permitted to reach the city the firnls refused to let them interview alleged rape victims in private. to this day the government of sudan has shamefully denied the un the ability to properly investigate this incident. >> sudan denies this. >> translator: the statement is being made in a flagrant attempt to level accusations once again in a security council. >> it calls all allegations baseless and unfounded. the latest denial of major allegations against sudan. its leader is wanted for crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide. he's yet to face the international criminal courts. there are calls to toughen sanctions and to increase aid. but many aid groups are been
