Landed wednesday on a comet. But the landing did not go as planned. News of the landing was beamed all the way back to earth. More details about the landing problem and whats coming up. The harpoons are expected to tether philae to the comet. They didnt deploy. How could this affect the mission . Well, they are still working on that. Let me explain what happened. I do have some models with me this morning, john. This is a small model of the comet, the typical rubber ducky form weve gotten to know. The spacecraft landed about right here. Thats pretty much exactly where they wanted to land, which is pretty remarkable considering all of this is happening about 510 million kilometers away from the earth and they had absolutely no way of steering the lander. They just threw it off the spacecraft and it landed in exactly the right place. I have a model of the lander itself. It dropped very, very slowly towards the comet spurs. This thing weighs 100 kilograms on earth but only one gram in space. It dropped slowly. The comet is small and has very little Gravitational Force itself. It bunny hopped back up because theres so little gravity and then came to a stand still, probably turned itself a little bit and then at some point came to a stand still on the comet surface. Theyre not sure whether or not its anchored into the comet right now. They say theyre trying to get data to find that out. The problem was that the space probe thats flying around this thing that holds contact with the lander is out of the radio signal. So they dont have any contact with it right now. Theyre going to establish it very, very soon. They say they believe everything is fine with the mission. The lander has sent back some signals from the comet surface. Its already sent some data back, but they are now trying to find out whether or not one of the other anchoring systems, because there are some drills on the feet of the lander, have actually deployed into the surface of the comet. So there is still a little bit of uncertainty, but they are sure, they say at this point, its on the comet and its working. John . Why was it out of why do they need to reestablish that now . Well, yeah, i can show you that as well. Because the ro se tta ssetta sa usually holds a distance of Something Like this, 27 kilometers above the comet. Its flown around the comet. Once it gets out of the signal, they lose contact between the lander and the rosetta. So this thing sends all of its data back to earth via the satellite. So it goes from here to here and then back to earth. And that transmission alone takes half an hour every time. So everything there is a big time lapse and there are certain times, because were dealing with an area so far away from earth. Were in a belt of comets thats beyond the dwarf planet pluto. This is very, very far away. There are certain times theres going to be radio silence. They say this is something that was planned. They knew about this in advance and now theyre going to reestablish contact as soon as they can. But again, the lander is still working. It still has power. Its going to have power for at least another 1 1 2 days. And until then, they believe that the comet is going to be so close to the sun that theres going to be sun raies coming on to the solar panels of the lander that will then reenergize the batteries onboard. Nato says russian soldiers and hardware are crossing the border into ukraine. The defense minister says that means his country should prepare for combat. Despite a ceasefire, fighting has increased recently we report on new indications of an alarming escalation. Weve seen columns of russian equipment, primarily russian tanks, russian artillery, Russian Air Defense system, and russian combat troop enter into ukraine. And nato says theyve observed something even more alarming. Russian war planes capable of carrying Nuclear Weapons deployed to crimea. Annexed by russia illegally earlier this year. If confirmed, the step could violate multiple international treaties. We see forces that are capable of being nuclear, that are being moved to crimea. Whether they are or not, we do not know. But they do have the kind of equipment there that could support that mission. Russias Foreign Ministry immediately denied the claims, calling them, quote, unfounded. The new weapons accompanied by renewed fierce fighting between Ukrainian Forces and separatists has all but ended a brief, shaky ceasefi ceasefire. Expressing alarm in both public and private, ukrainian Officials Say they are now preparing to fig fight. Translator we expect unexpected actions from them. I see it as our main task to prepare for military action. Reporter at a u. N. Security council session, ambassador Samantha Power condemned russias actions. Russia has negotiated a peace plan and then systematically undermined it at every step. It talks of peace but it keeps fuelling war. Reporter its still seen a provocation and the heavy weapons headed into ukraine seen as a preparation of a new offense i have by pro russian separatists. Cnn, washington. At a Security Council meet, Russias Deputy u. N. Ambassador called natos assessment a foray into propaganda. Translator theres such a fear of rebels in kiev that to justify a sending to the front of people and equipment. Were hearing declarations of russia sending weapons and members of the regular army. Were hearing broad declarations of nato about the sending of convoys and russian fighters from russia. But that is not accurately reflecting the situation on the ground. Reporter this is the 26th time the Emergency Council has met on ukraine. With Russia Holding veto power, there are no plans for a resolution condemning moscows action. Record shattering temperatures have gripped parts of u. S. This week. Lets go to derek van dam for all the details. Some of the roads are like ice skating rinks and theyre causing trouble. Cant say we didnt warn you. Temperatures in denver, colorado, in the United States actually, we had a temperature of about 16 degrees fahrenheit which shattered that temperature, which was a record. About 100year standing. We had a nearly identical weather pattern about 100 years ago. A cold front moved through oklahoma and dropped the temperature by 66 degrees fahrenheit. And thats exactly what we have going on now. You can see that arctic blast with a cold front pressing through the central parts of the u. S. If youre traveling through the rockie, perhaps denver, colorado, be prepared for very winterlike temperatures. Again, you had a record temperature that nearly shattered, or was shattered by several degrees. And more of the same for casper, wyoming. Well have a complete Weather Forecast coming up later in the show. Back to you. A doctor is under arrest in india but hes placing the blame on medicine that didnt arrive. Were outside the hospital where a number of women who survived this sterilization are actually being treated. Right now across india, the whole sterilization issue is now under the mike stoep skoep. Because in this incident, it blooefsed that about a dozen women were killed. Many more remain in hospital, which is where sanema is right now. But across this country last year, as many as 15,000 women died during these sterilization procedures. And they get paid as little as 10 u. S. Sorry for that delay. She is now ready to go in india with the very latest on this. Unfortunately we have lost her again. But as we were saying, this is an important story, one which now has those sterilization clinics very much you should the microscope in india. When we can, we will get back with an update on that story. In the meantime, a short break here. The u. S. President pays a visit to a once reclusive nation. What barack obama is hoping to accomplish today in myanmar. The u. S. In china agree to a landmark deal on Climate Change. Why some in congress say that agreement is no bargain for the u. S. The agreement requires china to do nothing at all for 16 years. While these carbon emission regulations are creating havoc in my states and other states around the country. Now what this meeting is about. Yes, a raise. Im letting you go. I knew that. You see, this is my amerivest managed. Balances. No. Portfolio. And if doesnt perform well for two consecutive gold. President barack obama is in myanmar today, also own as burma, for his second asian economic summit of the week. But its the host countrys human rights record that could end up dominating the agenda. Mr. Obama is meeting with myanmars president where hes expected to discuss the pace of democratic reform under the onetime military dictatorship. Ivan watson join us now. Ivan, this is all a bit awkward for the u. S. President given the pace of democratic reform has slowed significant just since his visit there just two years ago. Yeah. Two years ago you could argue they were in its honeymoon period after the Army Generals who had rumed the country had basically taken off their uniforms and pledged to change to a civilian democraticallyled government. But now its been two years since then. And listen to how a Top White House visor characterized the pace of reform in this country. Take a listen. Parts of the reform effort have stalled. Parts have moved forward. And parts weve been seeing things move backward. I think its a mixed picture. So clearly the northwestern president is here to try to ensure that this reform process heading towards what are hoped to be democratic parliamentary election next year will start to pick up again. And the white house picked up measures it can use to incentivize this process, perhaps offering more direct militarytomilitary contacts, more u. S. Aid and perhaps more American Business investment as well. And also pointing to the fact that the u. S. Government slapped sanction against one Parliament Member here just a few weeks ago amarked for identification accusations that he was helping incite violence here. Effectively blacklisting this individual as maybe the stick option that the u. S. Could extend if myanmar does not proceed forward with democratic reform. And one of those measures would be to change the constitution, which was written in 2008 by the military junta that ruled this country in such an oppressive and authoritarian fashion in so many decades. John . Ivan, thank you very much. Ivan watson, live for us there in myanmar. Now Republican Leaders in the u. S. Congress are harshly critical of a deal barack obama made with china. Chief u. S. Congressional correspondent dana bash has all the details. Mitch mcconnell hosting newly elected Senate Republicans for the First Time Since their victories put him in charge as majority leader and made him a more powerful adversary for the president. The president continues to send signals that he has no intention of moving toward the middle. Reporter mcconnell was eager to express outrage about a sweeping deal president obama struck hours earlier in china to limit Greenhouse Gas emissions. This is an ambitious goal, but achievable goal. Reporter china agreed to peak their carbon by 2030 and the u. S. , to limit by 28 by 2025. These carbon emission regulations are creating havoc in my state and other reporter fighting government regulation was a key part of mcconnells Reelection Campaign in coalrich kentucky. Gets jobs for people who are hurting, and it stops the war on coal now. Reporter in fact, partisan differences over Climate Change are among the deepest in a newly divided government. Many highprofile Congressional Republicans dont buy the Science BehindClimate Change. Do you believe Climate Change is real . Im always troubled by a theory that fits every perfect situation. Reporter you dont believe theres any manmade reason for Global Warming or Climate Change . What i think is the data are not supporting what the advocates are arguing. Reporter perhaps the most stark difference with the gop Senate Takeover is control of the committee overseeing environmental regulation. Staunch democratic environmentalist Barbara Boxer will hand the gavel to republican james inhofe who wrote a book about Climate Change being a hoax saying only god can affect the climate. My point is god is still up there and this is arrogance to think that we can change what is going on in the climate. Republicans fully expect the president to use his executive powers to start as he has done before. Mcconnell has promised when hes in charge of the senate next year, republicans will use their power of the purse to reverse the regulations setting up another showdown and could threaten a shut down. D dana bash, cnn, washington. Assaulted by a mob. They called them murderers and go home. More than a dozen women apparently killed during this operation that went wrong. We have a live report. What is this doctor whos been arrested accused of doing . Right now hes accused of negligence which is not a criminal offense. Basically, according to government guidelines, a medical team can only perform a maximum of 30 sterilization surgeries a day. In this case, this one doctor, and a few of his assistants performed more than 80, exactly 83 in about six hours. So that means roughly about four minutes per patient. Clearly theres some sort of negligence there. Now we have been talking to the doctor before he was arrested last night. And he says hes not responsible. As far as hes concerned he followed all safety procedures and hes actually been made a scapegoat in this issue. What he says is after the surgery, the women were completely fine. They went back to their villages and then they consumed antibiotics, some painkillers that were distributed by local pharmaceutical companies, and that he says many were expired perhaps or some were fake and he blames it on those medicines. Of course no one right now, none of the officials can actually say what exactly is to blame or whos to blame until the autopsy reports, which are expected perhaps tomorrow now or maybe even the day after. John . This sterilization is a fairly common practice across india. It is used as form of population control but it can often turn deadly. Thousands die every year. Thats right. This is one of the governments flag ship programs, if you like. Its something the country has been doing for decades all across the consistent and the country proud of it and say it is the most effective way to curb indias rapid population growth and they point to numbers. For instance, they prevented 60 Million Deaths sorry, not deaths, 60 million births just in 2010 because of these sterilization surgeries and the contraceptive methods. Obviously sterilization being the key one here. They say this is the most effective. What happens is they go village to village, encouraging women to participate. This might sound surprising to many of our audiences, but a lot of people you talk to here say they are completely fine with this because a lot of these people who willingly go for the surgeries have already had two or three children. They want other options. All of the women we talked to inside of this hospital right now, spoken to five or six of them. We talked to villagers, as well, family members who lost their wives in this case and they say they went voluntarily. They didnt go for the money. Even though they receive 10 to 20 for the surgeries, they went voluntarily but the Health Activists here say because of that financ
