This capitol looks like a fortress, and all over the country, that are gearing up for it. Thousands of americans are dying every day, and our president is meeting with the my pillow guy about voter fraud . How is trump dealing with the end of his presidency . Its pitiful, don. Donald trump is broken by his loss. He cant handle it. He has completely retreated from the duties of his office. He never actually enjoyed the actual work of the presidency. But hes not doing even the ceremonial goodbyes that a president would do in this a circumstance. Like mike pence when he was greeting the guard troops in the nations capital. He is consumed with his loss. The my pillow guy, withdrewdy jillianny, and steve bannon, all the guys that are crack pots and its sad for the country on a worlds stage to see how he comes out. And a pew research showed his Approval Rating is down to 29 amonge americans and even noncollege white americans who are the base of his movement, hes under water. 44 approve, 52 disapprove. So its a sad position. Susan, sue gordon is a top former professional for part of trumps tenure and saying that trump should be cut off frin from intel. My recommendation as a 30plus veteran of the intelligence briefing is not to the include him with any brief, joe biden can mitigate one aspect of the National Security risk posed by donald trump, private citizen. He was talking about National Security matters and meeting with foreign heads of state in the dining room of maralago. And this was something from the beginning of his presidency. He was talking on the unsecured cell phone and sending messages on the unsecure d cell phone, i remember a congressman asking that trump not talk on the unsecured cell phone about an possible attack on syria. This goes back to the beginning of the presidency. What are the consequences going to be. With the epic bonfires of the v vanities of our national government. We have had the second impeachment, what will it lead to . We dont know yet. Theres prosecutors looking at him in new york and potentially in georgia, we dont know what the consequences are. Taking away his security clearance is not going to be a full measure of the damage done for the country, is it . Yeah, yeah, marcus, sources are telling cnn, trump is demanding to know if the republicans that voted against him for impeachment can be primaried in 2022. Do you think his grip on the Republican Party ever fades . I would like to reveal tonight that im openly white. Im glad, because you were in the closet for such a hard time. The hat did not help you. It gives my and then i can give observations on the republican proprietors. Listen, i think its a man who would be king moment, as you recall the story, he was believed to be immortal until he bled and the minute it happened, the support eevaporated. It will not evaporate overnight, but its fading more quickly than i thought possible. And i mean, he a hammer lock on the party two weeks ago and was, you know, going to run in 2024, saying that he was running up until he didnt. And maintain a real, you know, a real monopoly on the power there h had so including the ability to primary other republicans. I think he will try to still exercise that power. I just think theres liability now in aligning with donald trump that was not there a week ago that has political implications. Real liability, that was a good observation as an openly white guy, thank you so much. John, you know, folks were thinking that the pardon ones, right, would start rolling in tonight. This weekend, what about pardon, its hard to believe theres not more before the end of this. How did the insurrection and potential impeachment affect that . Well, first of all, it expanded the range of criminal liability that President Trump and his son donald trump, jr. , face among other people for the rhetoric that they used, and you know, susan mentioned a moment ago, we have criminal investigations of him in georgia over attempting to entire fear with the election tabulation for the organization of the trump organization. He has big problems, only the federal potential crimes are, would be covered by pardons. I think we cant rule out the idea that before wednesday at noon, that he will attempt to pardon himself. Pardon family members and pardon other associates and particularly those that may know things about him that could damage him. One conrestraint that he faces is the white house staff has basically cleared out and he cant just write the pardons on a piece of paper. He will need white house lawyers to execute the documentation for that. And i think, the, as the hours get short, and as the president gets more and more isolated and tore meanted by his defeat. That is a potential problem. I fully expect pardons over the weekend or the first couple of days of next week before joe bind takes over. We mentioned, i was talking to mark about his grip on the party. Look at this poll, 80 of on trump voters over 50 believe this ridiculous lie that trump definitely won the election and that goes to 67 of trump voters with college degrees, and 82 without college degrees. How do we move forward as a country with this level of dislusion, or delusion . Well, you know, you want to think that mark is right in the sense that, you know, its it should be a fatal blow to have done and said the things donald trump has done. I do not think i can think of any worse action in any of our lifetimes than attacking the actual constitutional system itself. That is so striking. However, i would say, look, 197 republicans in the house voted just this week against impeaching trump on the single article of his role in the storming of the capitol, and inciting that. 140 republicans nearly even after the storming of the capitol, actually voted to challenge the Electoral College results. And so these are breath taking numbers. There was ten republicans in the house who voted to impeach trump. That is a miniscual number. So, i think the question is really, can republican elected officials, will they seize the moment to do whatever they can to finish him off entirely . And part of that rests in the u. S. Senate and whether Mitch Mcconnell who is reported to be furious and done with trump, whether he is able to rally 17 republican senators to sort of put the final shiv in him really. Mark you spoke to several Trump Supporters living in the alternate universe while filming, this is what they said about the attack on the capitol. Who is responsible for the violence then . Antifa went in first. They show they let them in first. They bussed them in. Trump supporters dont go around wearing helmets or all black. We are nothing but lovers and supporters and we support the blue. What do you think of the impeachment proceedings . It shouldnt happen, he is about to go willingly. You think he will be the president a week from now . Oh, definitely, i will eat a shoe on camera if he is not. So, whos shoe will she be eating next week . Because, and by the way that amtifa thing, is Law Enforcement and intelligence said theres no, its not true. But anyway, whos shoe is she going to be eating, did you offer her one . We are going to go back and have it for the next episode, don. You can see, in that, that sentiment was across the board and the antifa stuff has been denounced across the board with anybody with any censor authority, including kevin mccarthy, the leading republican. Well, i think, its people that feel like they have been left behind and they found somebody in donald trump who was a, you know, sort of chair y chariot for all the things they left their were left out of the. And he became a symbol of pulling this incredible negotiation that, you know, i mean, he told us what he was going to do. He said, you know, he said that he was going to win or if he lost the election was rig ready. He convinced a lot of people that the election was rigged. The fbi and Homeland Security failed to issue the threat assessment of the potential violence before the attack. Our senior correspondent, evan perez joins me now. Yes, don, it stands in contrast to the way the fbi and the Security Department handled the time before the election or even during the summer when the big concern at the Justice Department and the Trump Administration was about black lives matter protesters. The officials we have been talking to today said simply they could not have anticipated that this was the way it was going to turn out. They said that obviously, we have been talking about all the threats that were visible to everyone who has social media and they said, they just didnt believe that these things were going to turn out this way. Of course, this is all under investigation internally by the agencies to see why, why nobody decided to beef up the security at the capitol, given the fact that theres so many signs. So, security at the nations capitol, its a huge concern just days before the inauguration. You have new reporting on how long they have been tracking travel to d. C. And what are your sources saying to you . Yeah, now they are tracking dozens of people who are of particular concern who they believe could be responsible or could incite violence. And we are told that theres essentially a surveillance net that has gone up around these people. They want to make sure where they are, and make sure they are not coming here. And you know, that they are looking at communications, obviously, phones and one of the things they are particularly concerned and you can see it certainly a block away from my house. You can can see it, they are turning away cars. Because they are particularly concerned about vehicles being used to try to get through the perimeter. So, you can walk through some of the areas, but you cannot get through with a vehicle. Investigators have charged nearly 100 people in connection with the riots. Some of the details on the Court Documents are chilling. Anything stand out to you . Yeah, look, there was a couple of them, that have stood out. Especially today, there was a couple of guys, one name robert bower, second one, edward hemmingway. They came from kentucky, and virginia, drove here to washington. Interest and they said after hearing President Trump inspired them to watch and march down to the capitol, thats what they did. Here is one part of the fbi affidavit, they talk about going in to the capitol. Quote, both men remember encountering a Police Officer after they entered, according to bower the Police Officer grabbed his hand, shook it and said, its your house now. He goes on to say that he believes the Police Officer was fearing for his life. But it does really, don, under score a lot of the suspicion that people have about what went on in the capitol. Was there perhaps some sympathetic officers who essentially let some of the men, or some of the people in to the capitol. That is they are interested to make sure that people in positions of trust did not betray that trust. Thats something that is still on the radar. All right. Evan perez, thank you very much. As the mob chanted hang mike pence and a makeshift gallows went up, the Vice President and his wife and daughter were seconds away from being spotted. They were hiding less than a hundred feet from the violent crowd at one point. Attacking others. The timeline tells how it happened, just before 1 00, trump demands that pence toss the election results. Mike pence, i hope you are going to stand up for the good of our constitution and for the good of our country. And if you are not, im going to be very disappointed in you. I will tell you right now. Im not hearing good stories. The senate will now retire to its chamber. Pence had no legal power on reject the vote. But in little more than an hour as he leads congress in certifying the vote for joe biden, the trump crowd is hammering through capitol barricades. Inside we have been told by Capitol Police had t that the capitol in lock down. Outside, by 2 11, the mob had smashes the building and moments later pence is hustled out of the chamber. We will stand in recess until the you call of the chair. Protesters are in the building. Based on the post reporting the few seconds that goodman guys keeps the mob from seeing pence and his family being hurried in to hiding in to an office. Right now, we are living with insurrectionists among us and we can expect that these people will change their minds after donald Trump Leaves Office next week. How do we walk people back from the ledge, really, and deradicalize them after the president and his allies have convinced so many that this election was illegitimate . Well, first off, deradicalization is a resource intensive and longterm journey. We have to acknowledge for the first time really, for policy makers in the u. S. , the real severity of the radicalization of the severe right wing. What it means online, offline and ramifications for violence and harmful activity. We need to first take that step before we can start to understand what programming, what practices need to take place to draw some of the people out of the extremist ecosystems that they have been taken in to over the past few years. Some of that deradicalization can take place through credible messages. Trying to sew a seed of doubt in the propaganda that the people have been consuming for years now on social media platforms and elsewhere. And it also affects the policy response from govpt ternment to the programming in place and recognize the problems and address it at the local level. Now that the social Media Companies are cracking down on the most dangerous elements. They have begun organizing in the dark. How does it complicate the job of Law Enforcement . Does it hurt or help . It makes it tougher. I have been speaking to the people at the social media platforms in that area, and they have discussed what they have done with qanon, compared to what they have done with isis, a wipe out of the thousands of accounts. They knocked out 70,000qanon accounts on twitter. Then you force them underground. That is the equivalent of organizing a rally through Public Meetings and sticking up flyers to having secret meetings in basements. What facebook and twitter has done, has disrupted the organizing capabilities of the groups. But, they have forced them in to darker corners of the internet. And as its harder for us to see what is now being said and its harder for Law Enforcement too. So, theres apotential path that we may see more folks as they go in the darker places online, getting more radicalized. Chloe, i understand you have been monitoring only extremism and you are seeing chatter online about the 17th and inauguration day. Tell us what that, can you tell us what that chatter is, exactly . Yes, thats correct. We have been watching the movements in the larger platforms, but also the smaller darker spaces that we have mentioned. The chatter around the week to come is a lot more confused than what we saw before the second of january. So its hard to predict, certainly seeing increased fear or uncertainty about calling explicity for violent activity. But we are seeing a continuation toward violence. Across cities in the u. S. And not just d. C. So we are keeping a close eye on the various strands of the ecosystem that have been involved in that planning. And it has been qnon and White Supremacists and those that moved from facebook and twitter to telegram and parlar. You have new reporting how stop the steal groups are hiding in plain sight on facebook . What did you learn about it . Theres a crack down, as i mentioned, but the basis of what we saw here in washington last week was bill of iuilt on a fou of misinformation, can you can find the lies on the elections on the social media platforms and the groups like stop the steal are adapting. We saw groups making slight changes in their names on facebook to stay on. So the misinformation is staying online, once the week passes and maybe theres less of a spotlight on the social Media Companies, they may take the foot off the gas a bit, and not be as tough on misinformation and hate as they have been in the past seven days. We have sound of biden talking today in wilmington, just about what a big undertaking it will be. Our plan is as clear as it is bold. Get more people vaccinated for free. Create more places to get vaccinated. Mobilize more medical teams to get the shots in peoples arms. Increase supply and get it out the door as soon as possible. This will be one of the most challenging operational efforts ever undertaken by our country. But you have my word, and we will manage the hell out of this operation. You know, i will say, these ideas like we heard today, they were pretty familiar ideas. They were ideas that biden has talked about before, so, i think in the coming weeks what we will need to see from the Biden Administration and his covid team, including great gounder, will be the fine details of exactly how his administration is doing to execute everiy singe one of the ideas. I see you nodding your head, he is going for 100 million vaccines in the first 100 days. Clearly the reality is that supplies are limited right now. Is that goal realistic . Look, don, he remains really committed to this goal of 100 shots in 100 days. If you look at how Many Americans are dying from coronavirus right now. We have hit a death toll of about 4,000 people dying a day across the country. That is not acceptable. If we allow that to continue at that pace, we are in for more than doubling of the overall death toll in the country. Over the next 100 days. So, he is very committed to making sure that we accelerate the pace on vaccination, that we do it more efficiently and yet, equitably. And mj, the Biden Administration is planning to retiring the operation ward speed name. Is it a rebuke of trump . What are they signaling will be different here . Well, you know what . We have heard consistently about operation warp speed is the concern that it appears to have really prioritized making the vaccines in a quick way, and in a quick manner but didnt really focus at all on actually putting up a system and creating a system in which to distribute the vaccines. We know the Incoming Administration is worried about that. We have heard this concern from state officials and other folks had that we have been talking to. And i was struck, yesterday, when i spoke briefly with jeff zi o zi zions, he is not mincing words and said literally theres no system in place to get the vaccines distributed. So, its a huge problem. I think its not surprising that the new government that is coming in to washington does not even want to continue with this name because they see it as such a failure and i think this is part of what the Biden Administration, that is coming, is finding so daunting. Its not that they feel like theres sort of a poor and flawed system that they can improve upon. They really feel like starting on day one. They are going to have to start from scratch. Dr. Gounder, secretary azar has submitted his resignation as is standard for any secretary. He is complaining about his departments legacy being tarnished and doesnt naengz nearly 400,000 americans have died from this virus. The fact is, the failures of the administration, thats, thats why we are where we are. Unfortunately, it is where we are. However, as i mentioned, the president elect is really committed to addressing the issue. He announced a massive American Rescue plan to rescue americans from the Current Situation from the economic disaster. And the coronavirus pandemic. And he is going to be very focused on ramping up, accelerating the distribution of vaccines and so thats going to mean, really trying you know, an entire all of government response. So he is going to be leveraging everything from Community Mass vaccination sites to your local drug store. So primary care doctors and other local federally qualified Health Centers. Many of the primary care doctors and federally qualified Health Centers that we will be focused on are imbedded in vulnerable communities. In communities of color. We have been out there standing with our blm allies, some amazing local grassroots organizations, like the d. C. Protests and the palm collect i have here in d. C. , and we have seen how they have policed these events and the blm events and it was very it was very upsetting on to see the lack of escalation of force that they utilized against the protesters who are obviously predominantly white. So, i think it was a it was a showing of the White Privilege and the White Supremacy that exists in our can counountry ri. Around the the capitol, the area around the capitol and downtown d. C. , was littered with not only trash but signs. Stickers and messages with neo nazi and alt right symbols, all over the place really. We are looking at amazing pictures of your group working to clean it up. Tell me how that happened and what it meant to you and your fellow veterans to do this . Yeah, it was, it was actually we were out on january 6th, i was with one of my colleagues from our organization, one of our volunteers, veteran volunteers and we were walking through and we could not help but notice all the facist, racist stickers and he was taking them down. I had asked him on to not do that, because it was starting to get dark, i was aphrase the officers with think we were putting them up and i told him that we would make sure to get out and clean them up. And so, thats what we did. We tried to organize something and honestly we kind of expected you know, 15 or 20 people to show up and we got fortunate. One of my director of ops, she was really smart and savvy with instagram and was able to get some good feedback from there, and we were able to get over 150, you know, almost 180 people out to help us clean up. So, it was Pretty Amazing. Its Pretty Amazing what you do. Pretty shocking what happened, obviously too, at least a shock o to the system. We did see it coming.
