The republican party, we used to be the party of fiscal responsibility, so signs of fiscal issues and ballooning the National Deficit used to be the heart. So why wouldnt he do this . Hes used to business where you rub elbows with so and so and try to put pressure on this one and that one. Hes never really faced any consequences otherwise, so why would he not try to do this . We already know the fbi director said would you why wouldnt he do it with members of the senate . But weve got this breaking news on the topic tonight out of San Francisco. A jury has found an undocumented immigrant not guilty in the death of kate steinle. It reignited the immigration debate. Live for us in San Francisco. What can you tell us . Reporter well, dop, first of all the president just tweeted about this. I want to read you the tweet. He says this is a disgraceful verdict in the kate steinle case. No wonder the people of our country are so angry with illegal immigration. Obviously people are going to see this as a controversial decision. This all began july 1st, 2015, thats when you had had 32yearold kate steinle taking a stroll in downtown San Francisco. Shes with her father and a shot rings out. The shot goes through her back and prosecutors immediately said this was an intentional killing. The suspect in this case, a 45yearold undock immigrant intentionally pointed it weapon and pulled the trigger. Within an hour, police had arrested him. Now, the defense in this trial and i was covering the trial for most of it. They were able to effectively plant reasonable doubt. The shot that rang out was a ricochet shot. It travelled about 12 feet and went another 78 feet before it struck the pavement and killed kate steinle. And garcia had had never met kate steinle and had had no history of violence, despite the fact he had been deported five times and there was little gun shot residue on his hands and they were able to get a defense expert to testify this particular weapon that fired a. 40 caliber pistol had a history of accidental discharges. So it all added up to reasonable doubt in the jurys minds and they only found him guilty on one charge and that was being a felon in possession of a firearm. The immigrations and Customs Enforcement says it will deport jose deraw ta, what more you tell us . Reporter thats going to depend whether or not he receives any prison time in San Francisco for that last charge i talked about. He was found guilty of the lesser charge. It carries a two to three Year Prison Sentence because he served time already in jail, they may let him go. If that happens, then immigration and kis Customs Enforcement will deport him back to mexico. Youll have some argue perhaps he would try to come in another time. Lets get back to the group here. This case was central to the trump campaign. Turns out the jury saw the set of facts much differently with this verdict. I just want to say this its a tragedy either way for her family who are mourning her. But i believe the president was using him as a way to project a pathology on to all immigrants, or mexican immigrants who might be criminals. And i see that happen over and over and over again but only among people of color. With him and mexicans. Black people and willy horton. Muslim people and every muslim who commits an act of violence or terror. It never happens with white people. That guy can shoot however many hundreds of people he shot in vegas and we will never say this is proof of white pathology. We will never say that. But we will hone in on this guy, right or wrong, whatever he did, and project on to the rest of the immigrant population that this is the reason we have to do something about the rest of them. He epitmizes their pathology. That, at its core, is what racism looks like when you dont use the slur but you project on to a population. There are a number of different articles, have we been lied to about the kate steinle case . And again it is a tragedy. Nothing is going to sadly bring her back. Im sure everyone wishes they could. But heres it bottom line with the jury. The jury believes what the evidence, whatever evidence was presented in court that it was an accidental shooting from gun left behind by someone else. Thats what the jury made their verdict on. I didnt see the evidence so i take it as true. But heres the facts. Five times hes taken out of the country. Were supposed to have a system that works. If we somebody shop lifting five crimes and some will say its not a crime, its a violation. Tapping into a broader point if i can move away and carefully from race is if we cant get our immigration system if forced, a lot of people are frustrated by that. In missouri we have more legal immigrants than hispanic maybe. We have a big population. But people what trump tapped into as a candidate is we want a wall and people i dont think understood what that meant. They just knew the system was breken and Kate Steinles dead. And her family is saying a guy, a felon in possession of a gun and five different stories and gets only a crime on possession. Listen, that is true. He did have different stories. I wasnt in the courtroom. I dont know how they came out with this particular verdict. But can you bring what you said to the floor and there is some legitimacy to what you said about the had immigration process, without pliticizing it, without otherizing it . When you say illegal or undocumented, yes, they are undockiumed but cant you bring a spotlight to it without politicizing it . As someone who worked on this direct issue for many years on capitol hill, a lot of what is said is correct. And this is very frustrating for the American People and as someone who grew up in new jersey, i grew up in a area where it was a melting pot of everybody. I didnt think about border crossings until i met someone from california and Border Patrol agents were unjustly convicted and sent to prison and we got them out, thank god. But my work on that case introduced me to all of the dysfunctions of our immigration system and the kate steinle case epitmized that on a number of levels. Juries dont always get it right. Unfortunately in this case we werent in the room but it just seems on the face of it a little tough to swallow because a life was lost and taken at the hands that shouldnt have been in the country. I think a lot of people feel it should be a harsher punishment. And t should. And the reason he was back on the street has a lot to do with what happens in sanctuary cities with local governments not cooperating with it federal Law Enforcement agencies like ice and unfofrtunately they end up and they were trying to make the illegal crossing multiple times harsher penalties listen, everyone here has a point. But the only question that i asked is and we know the facts is yes, he was sent back coming down the escalator and saying rapists and mexicans and stu im saying fewer number of crime all im its saying being an undocumented purtsen is right or wrong but by politicizing saying they commit more crimes. They dont. And i think people should understand that. This is nothing to do about kate steinle. Its awful and most pipal want a harsher punishment. The guy that did the shooting in las vegas, he was an american citizen with certain protections under law. Someone here illegally doesnt have the same protections and shouldnt have. They do and for is case law about that. Not the same. They are. Due process. Charles, this is ia say the trump doctrine is White Supremacy and thoroughly corrupt and a pathological liar but it is to White Supremacy and to hostility for everyone not white that he always returns. When you look at how he behaved in texas compared to how he behaved in puerto rico and how he treated the mayor of san juan. You look at how he talked about mexican judges. You look at how he talks about the athletes who kneel during the anthem. You look at how he behaves and consta constantly comes back to that honey pot.
