CNNW CNN Tonight With Don Lemon September 9, 2017

And we will be with isa very shortly. Meanwhile, back up to a category 5 with 160 Miles Per Hour sustained winds, Hurricane Irma delivering a glancing below to cuba, not expected to weaken before slamming into the florida keys early on sunday. The National Hurricane center warns that the storm there might not be survivable. To give you a sense of what is coming, irma is larger than the p there is no safe place to stay, particularly around the keys area. It has prompted a massive evacuation. For days, cars and trucks screaming north along the states highway. 24 deaths have been confirmed since the storm first hit the eastern caribbean. This is how it looked a couple days ago as irma ripped into the British Virgin islands. Theres no reason to think it will be any less intense when it hits florida. Take a look at some of the after math, hour after hour of punishing wind leaving behind a surreal landscape, incredible images there. Whatever those hillside structures were, they are gone, reduced to splinters. Lets get the latest on the storms strength and position. Its very much on its way to florida. What can they expect . Yes. Already were picking up some of the outer bands that have already made its way on shore around miami. We saw hesa just getting battered for a while, lots of lightening and pummeling rainfall, a little bit of a break before the next round of wind, rain and pretty frequent lightening. What i have seen, some of the reporter stations around south florida has been a uptick in the wind. The wind gusts between 25 and close to 40 Miles Per Hour. This is a forecast radar of what we anticipate. Here we go from 7 00 p. M. On saturday. Now, it looks like the time of land fall has been adjusted a little bit. Maybe on sunday about midday or early afternoon but long before landfall occurs, which means that the eye crosses the coast, you are going to be battered by Tropical Storm force winds, south florida, dade, char lawsuit, on into central secretaries of florida, hills burrow county, into also lot of the counties around lakeland florida is what im trying to say. Weve got 20 million plus people that live throughout the state of florida. Pretty much, unless you live on this extreme western edge of the pan handle, everybody is going to be affected by irma. And what michael said earlier about irma is so frightening because we dont know exactly whats going to happen. The computer models can tell us all kind of information. We know what hurricanes so. We know it slowed down a little bit. It was barlg along at 16 miles an hour, now its 12 miles an hour. Its frightening to think this may slow down even more. Look at the powerful rainfall totals, up and down the florida peninsula, tampa, fort myers, west palm beach, just all these areas could expect maybe 10 to 20 inches of rainfall. And Power Outages. With some of these bands that move on shore with the lightening, with the gusty winds, some people may lose power temporarily, but look, sunday into monday morning, and there you see the orange and the red you, all the way from sara soda to fort myers to naples, fort lauderdale, jupiter beach, west palm beach, widespread Power Outages. If you havent left, consider that you would have difficulty food, you would have difficulty getting gas to operate anything, that you might lose power, that the roads and the infrastructure is going to be affect. There were so many things, such a long list of things that would be impacted and in your life that would lead one to believe it would be better to just get away. I still believe that whole shortedly. One, because its still a category 5 hurricane. With the winds at hurricane strength through key west florida, up through dade, braer county, sunday afternoon, but even before then, those bands and those heavy rain bands expected to move on shore, and then we go into sunday about 8 00 p. M. , travels a little further to the north. Expect there to be weakening but dont be fooled by that. If it slows down youll get pump ld with more rainfall fcolumbia georgia,a vana, make um, augusta georgia, atlanta, so many people with so much in the way of population that could be impacted as we go into monday, and weve been talking about this storm now for a week. And isa, well have more than 20 Million People impacted as we go into the next 48, 72, 96 hours. Back to you. All right. Before i let you go, karen, you know, i was thinking about covering Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and seeing along those Barrier Islands the enormous damage done not necessarily by the wind and rain but the storm surge as it came ashore. We literally saw entire houses that had been picked up off their foundations and dumped in the middle of streets. Obviously theres going to be a storm surge issue here. How bad could it be, what sort of damage can be done . Youve got all those houses along the barriers in florida. Yes. And there are a lot of vintage 1950s, 1960s home, maybe they were made out of concrete block. Unless they were reinforced, Hurricane Force winds, category 5 Hurricane Force winds are not going to be able to with stand that. But since andrew, and if anything andrew taught us is that they need to prepare buildings, subsequently that can with stand these types of Hurricane Force winds. Thats good news. But that is fairly recent construction, recent meaning in the last 25 years. But, yes, those Barrier Islands, those small coastal communities, the impact will be great. Michael . All right. Karen. Thanks so much. Well check in with you later in atlanta. Lets go back to isa standing by in miami where i know youve been getting wet. I have indeed. Not fully drenched, but youve definitely seen a change in the last few hours michael, not just in the mood but also in the weather as karen was pointing out. She saying more rain is expected in the next few hours. What weve seen is wind picking up significantly. Weve seen more rain. The weve seen plenty of lightening must i say. That is on the weather front, on the mood here in miamis gone from one of preparedness to one thats slightly been more acknowledge stated, some jitters and some urgency. Thats because police have been going door to door telling people to seek shelter, to get out and be prepared. We have seen the video of those long lines of people trying to head north, and i 95, trying to get away. From officials are saying, if youre staying put, make sure you are prepared, youre hunkered down. You might not be able to speak to police, be able to call for help in those key hours, but theyre saying otherwise seek shelter. Plenty of shelter here in miami. Lets get more on the many people that have been vaekd, 5. 6 million have been evacuated. Im joined on the line by one of our guests, general secretary, dave major david eric son whos a general secretary of the salvation armys florida division. Major thank you for joining us. Give us a sense of what youve seen in the last few hours. Thank you for having me. Weve seen a lot of people take the heeded evacuation. Were getting more requests to assist with feeding at shelters as coins have further up the state had to open up more shelters than they were prepared to. Were adding feeding to many of those shelters so we can help those prepare and ride out the storm in a safe place in a shelter. And how many i mean, are people heeding those warnings . Im speaking to Police Official earlier in the last hour or so, hes saying the majority are, but there are some people who are still pretty unsure and trying to ride out the storm. There always is those who try to ride out the storm or wait until its too late to get out. We recommend that they try to stay with their local emergency shelters and try to find shelters, a safe place of refuge at least in their community so they can ride out the storm safely. We try to encourage along with the state Emergency Management offices, when evacuation orders have been given, for them to move out on get to where they need to be to be in a safe place. Major, at what time, for those people who are still digterring, theyre not sure, theyre looking at the hurricane path, theyre wondering is it going to hit us, is it going east, is it going west, by what point should people have made that decision if not already should they have made that decision . What point should they be staying still, staying put, or seeking shelter . Is there a cut off time would you say . At this point, i would say that cut off time would be this morning, early morning, that we need to be if they havent left already they need to be finning a place of safe shelter in their community because the roads as would he have seen them on the news and throughout all the reports weve had, the roads are crowded and its hard to get too far out of the storms path at this point. They need to get with their local Emergency Management and find a safe shelter as close to where they are that they can get to quickly. Major, appreciate you taking the time and keeping us updated on the situation there. And very best of luck to your team and to yourself of course and those close to you. And of course like the major was saying, there are just some people, of course, who have decided to ride out the storm. Its such a personal decision. Some said theyve experienced it, theyve been in a situation like this. Others saying if its their only option. I want you to hear from one lady, penny mona hand, she too, she said, is staying put. Take a listen. Well, i dont have the luxury of leaving. We have a small farm here in st. Lucie county, and were smack dab in the middle of the indian river citrus district and were close to harvesting our crop here. And we need to be here available to stick the trees back in the ground if theyre blown out, and just be here for our trees, and then we also have cows and cattle on our farm that this is their time in september and october when calves are being born. We have to be here for that. You know, the these storms bel blow in and make the biggest mess you can possibly imagine, and invariably trees fall on the fences, we have to fix the fences. We just have to be here. Im scared if we leave, we cant get back in a timely fashion. When you hear about the fact that, you know, if you are caught in the middle of this storm and you dial 911, there may not be Emergency Services available to help you out. Does that scare you . Oh, yes. It makes me very nervous. But, you know what . I am hoping im prepared for the best and im hoping for the best. I hope my house will hold up. Well just see. Its all in the hands of god. And, you know, im 10 miles from the coast. Most of the evacuations are going to take place along the coastlines. We just prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So peggy, what is your biggest fear right now . Im really concerned about losing my citrus crop. Weve been fighting for the last decade for this citrus greeninggreening diz hes that has come in some china and were about to turn the corner on that and we have a beautiful crop hanging out there. Im so sad. I hope most of it doesnt blow off. And this means so much to you because this land, this farm has been in your family for generations, i understand. How long . My people have been in this county for generations. I am the last my son and i are the last of our family whove been who continue to farm in this area. This will probably do it for us. If we cant if we if its really bad and we cant recover from this, i suspect were probably this will finish us off. How are you preparing . What precautions are you taking to make sure you and your family, who i presume are staying with you, are as safe as you can be . Weve started about a week ago thursday, started making our trips into the grocery store, weve loaded in with lots of food and water. You know, weve managed to secure, weve been working since thursday cutting down what limbs are in the way, weve secured the house, weve secured our barns, most of our equipment is in a safe place. But then we also have elderly neighbors, we have to go help them close up. Its sort of neighbor depending on neighbor out here. And i would say i personally dont know anyone who is well, no, i cant say that. There are a few people who are leaving. And i would never encourage anyone not to leave. If they can leave, they need to go on and get out. After the storm is over, its critical for farmers to be on their land, dealing with the water, making sure it gets off the land, dealing with the trees, making sure they get but back in the ground, dealing with the cows to make sure theyre supposed to be. Its a mess. Your clear is if you leave its not just whats going to happen to your land but how difficult it would be for you to navigate the streets and get back. Since harvey went through in texas, gas is a very dear commodity at this point. Im stared if we try to leave, we cant get enough gas to get back in to clean up the mess. Penny monahon really explaining in a very passionat way why shes staying put, its so personal whether to stay put, hunker down or drive north. As Officials Say time and time again, you can rebillion dollardollar dollars rebuild your life, if youre staying, that youre prepared, especially given as we heard from Police Officials as well that they may not be able to pick up those urgency emergency calls whpt hurricane actually hits, michael. Yeah, obviously life a paramount and people getting to safety is so important. But also weve been talking to a lot of people here in orlando whove come up from places like where you are, miami and other plac places other places south of here. Who left everything behind. I was talking to one young man who said he has no contents insurance. Hes renting his house. Hes not that worried about it, but he has no contents insurance. People whove left in their thousands have no idea what theyre coming back. We just got email confirmation, irma is still not having its major effect on florida but already there have been 10,000 Power Outages, 10,000 people impacted by Power Outages. It really is just beginning. I want to talk now to a journalist who is in nausa in the bahamas. Nassau is know stranger to hurricanes. But this one is so much bigger than anything thats thats been around for so long. I mean, how are they dealing with the preparations of dealing with this monster of a hurricane . Yes, the bahamas are no stranger to hurricanes, they dealt with them last year and they were prepared for irma arrival. These are six of the seven more southerly islands were evakd wednesday and thursday which was the largest evacuation procedure in the management agency, most of them were brought to this island in the island of nassau where the vast majority of the bahama population is leaving they live in houses built of concrete that are capable of resisting through the Hurricane Forces, and thankfully irma swing past buy the island of nassau and the northern most part of the bahamas archipelago. The way these people deal with hurricanes and Tropical Storms on a daily basis. Earlier we went to visit one of the shelters where the people from the southern most island have been welcomed in these evacuation process. We spoke with them and asked if there was a sense of relief in the sense that they they were able to pass by and they were able to come to nassau and resist from the burden of irma. And what they told us is that the relief will come in november when the tropical season will be over and they will know for the next year they will be once again prepared. Michael. Thanks so much. They are dealing with some major issues and florida here waiting. The storms not meant to hit here properly in orlando until sunday afternoon, early on sunday afternoon, preparations being made.
