With the gop in turmoil, could the libertarians be the spoilers here . This is don lemon. We begin with breaking news. A knife attack in Central London to tell you about. I want to turn back to todays political news here. We have been watching this libertarian town hall, david. Gary john got 9 . There are a lot of people who arent thrilled with donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Do you think they moved the needle at all, especially with the Republican Party in turmoil . Obviously they get the least amount of press coverage, were so dominated by Hillary Clinton and donald trump so that i do think when voters hear this, we no when you add up the 9 they get, the 5 that jill stein pulls in some of these polls, as well as some of the undecided, youre at near 20 of the electorate that is not going with trump or clinton. So if youre sitting at home and hearing these guys, youre hearing folks that dont sound like your typical politician. I thought one of the most interesting answers that gary john gave in the town hall, when he was asked about black lives matter, he said i think ive had my head buried in the sand for a long time. What . You dont hear politicians say that. Or i have to go ahead and admit mistakes. Who does that. If you are looking for something different, can you imagi you can imagine why listening to these guys, you may find something appealing. If youre somebody who believes in sort of the Republican Party platform or Democratic Party platform, youre going to find something im sitting there saying i can relate to these guys. The challenge is we are still dominated as a twoparty system. Gary johnson says it, they got to get on the debate stage. If they can get to the 15 threshold in the poll, then theres a whole different conversation taking place. Right now they still have quite a bit to do. Speaking of the two traditional candidates, lets talk about the fox news poll, joining Hillary Clinton with a 10point lead in a headtohead matchup. 69 of voters felt trumps response to the ckhan family wa out of bounds. That last number we probably didnt need to poll on it. Just from the sheer reaction from every corner of the universe since that controversy erupted, from his own fellow democrats, everybodying them ou. We had her at a 9point lead, weve seen similar margins throughout the week. All the polls seem to be telling us the same thing right now. As Hillary Clinton emerged, she emerged with a bounce and she has a wide lead. Upper trajectory . Upper trajectory. But will she be able to sustain it . Controversy that donald trump has gone through the last couple of days weve been covering this for over a year now but it seems like the last week or so, its been really worse. Look at this. So i just want to tell you the campaign is doing really well. Its never been so well united. We started on june 16th. I would say right now its the best in terms of being united that its been since we began. Were doing incredibly well. So, david, is he aware of the firestorm around him . He is, no doubt. I mean, i think hes trying to portray a different reality, one he hopes to get to. Listen, there are some signs for him that he can point to. He had really big fundraising numbers, his most successful month of fundraising since the campaign really closing that gap with Hillary Clinton and doing so, don, by getting a ton of lowdollar donors. Those are folks you can keep going back to over and over again to keep donating. Thats converting that Grass Roots Energy that weve seen in his rally now, to donate to his campaign, its a really good sign for him. You saw him really try to keep on message to Hillary Clinton on his opposition to the iran nuclear deal. He then seveered off again and this is the biggest concern, that he cant remain disciplined and on message. He cant help himself. He cant help himself. But you see little sparks of opportunities where he can continue to drive the message. That, what you just played there, is clearly a little more wishful thinking. People are like, oh, theres a little bit of it. If youre running for the president , you should be a politician by now. Newt gingrich, who is a vocal Trump Supporters, could have been the Vice President ial pick here said to the Washington Post anybody who is horrified by hillary should hope trump will take a deep breath and learn some new skills. He cannot win the presidency prap praiting the way he is. The judge, that was his fargo. Now were this close to the election. I think you just hit on the most important point. Each time something comes up now, were now at 97 days. When were at 80 days, 60 days, its going to become that much more problematic because the party is going to get so concerned about what will happen on november 8th down ballot for the rest of their candidate, theyre going to start fleeing if they have no sense of confidence that donald trump will keep it together through the election. He said he met with gold star families. I met with six families, incredible people. And a gentleman handed me a check. He said, you know, mr. Trump, this is for your campaign. And i said you dont have to do that. He goes, i do. He said its more money and i havent even opened it yet, i dont think ill tell you how much it is actually, but he said its more money wow. He said its more money more money than we can afford but i want you to have it for your campaign. I think its incredible. Does that help him at all . Well, i think meeting with gold star families makes a lot of sense. For a nonpolitician, it is a very political play. What about i met with these families . I wanted him to know how much i respect and admire him and that i didnt mean any harm with a khan family and instead of talking about money, its himself. It went back to this check that the family said it couldnt afford to give him. You wonder if hes going to accept that payment or not. But the fact that he did meet with these families, that was clearly him trying to say i get that i didnt handle this correctly. I am sure there are some people that would have preferred him to have done that a few days ago. He is blaming Hillary Clinton for the 400 million the u. S. Sent to iran. Is this strategy, you think, going to stick . I think this is a good avenue for him to continue to press the opposition to the iran nuclear deal. Its not some widely popular deal. This is something republicans grabbed on to as soon as it came to fruition. Hillary clinton was there at the very creation and beginning of that deal and now that we learned the details of this payment that was supposed to be what we were told on this entirely separate track, having nothing to do with releasing hostages, but simultaneously it happens and whether or not the hostages would have been released without it, i think this is a good avenue for him to formulate a Foreign Policy argument on whether or not we are indeed safer if the world is a more contained place. You saw her, she was holding up his ties. Were going to see that in advertising. It worked against others in his position like mitt romney would have you to talk about outsourcing. This goes against the grain of his economic appeal. Shes trying to up end the gains that hes made talking about trade, getting in there White Working Class voters. Shes trying to remind them all he doesnt even make his products here. It has the potential to take away some of the gains he made with those voters. Donald trump is insisting to supporters his campaign is united and doing well but a lot of republicans are disagreeing with him right now. I always wanted to get the purple heart. This was much easier. And ive never been a big fan of john mccain. And i just hate the way our veterans have been treated by john and other people. All of a sudden i was viciously attacked on the stage of the Democratic Convention by mr. Khan and i responded to that vicious attack. His wife, if you look at his wife, she was standing there. She had nothing to say. Probably maybe she wasnt allowed to have anything to say. You tell me. I think my whole life has been about handling pressure. I have a great tem pperament fo winning. Even if people dont like me, they have to vote for me. They have to. Whats the reaction to how donald trump has been conducting his campaign the last five or six days. Thanks for having me on, don. That was an interesting leadin. A lot of it taken out of context. In my opinion some of it was done in a kiddingly manner and unfortunately its been portrayed across the media as being very, very harsh. You know, i think donald says things that sometimes what was taken out of context . Well, the issue you know, with mr. Khan and his son that maybe she didnt have anything to say. When i was watching that on the debate at the convention that night, i thought, well, because they didnt want her to speak that night, that it was the campaign that didnt want her to speak. And then afterwards it was all kind of spun to the fact that it was that they didnt want her that they didnt want her to speak because of her religion. I didnt get that sense at all when i was watching it. Well, she said or about the baby she said she was too emotional to speak. He insinuated she couldnt speak because of islam and her religion. She said that was not the case, she was too overcome with grief and emotion to speak that evening. And you know, don, i understand that now but at the time it didnt affect me that way. Im a mother, i have lost a son. I know how that grief is with you for the rest of your life and it leaves a hole in your heart. And certainly her son, captain khan, should have been and is admired and respected. He was fighting for our country, for our freedom. And i believe that the majority of the people believe that and i hope that donald feels that way, too. Would you have reserved, as a politician who has run for office before, would you have reserved your criticism of that mother . Even if you think it was taken out of context ock it was tak i dont think it was taken out of context but even if you do, should he have held that . Sometimes you say things and they dont come out the way you meant to say them. When we have a grieving mother, its a sensitive issue and they were talking from the heart and it was a bad situation. I hope that we all learn from that incident. Do you think it would help if he just apologized to the family because now if youre looking at it, it shows at least 69 , almost 70 say his criticism of the family was just out of bounds. Do you think it would help if he said im sorry, i read it wrong and i apologize to the family. Would that help . Apologies always help a situation in any circumstances where its been called out on you and, you know, its usually an easy thing to do and on the same vein, i think theres apologies owed to some other mothers that they were lied to and they were never apologized to and nor were they ever told the troous. Y truth. You know, never, ever forget benghazi. There are family members that have paid the ultimate price. And they deserve the right they can say whatever they want and you allow them their grief and you move on. So lets move on with this one. A new fox poll, since youre a politician because you know because the time is closing that donald trump is 10 points behind Hillary Clinton. That reflects Hillary Clintons convention bounce and the universal disapproval about the khan family. Its a dangerous time in this race to fall that far behind . I think it is but its the dog days of summer. Polls move all the time and but i think after kids get back in school, summers behind us, labor days gone, then everybody will move forward and well get a much, much better feel. And i think there will be transitioning in both campaigns. Im very hopeful of that. Because i do believe go ahead, governor. Sorry. I do believe that there are a lot of people out there that want a change and they appreciate donald trump out there speaking about the issues that they are concerned about and they are tired of the last eight years of obama and hillary and they want somebody there thats going to be a truth teller and tell it like it is and make a difference. You did say you told my producers that you said that his opponent is spinning his words but you also said you wish he would be more careful with his own words. I do wish he would be more careful with his words. I dont know if thats possible or not, but i think it would be well received. You know, i said that i wish he would tone is down. But that comes from not being a politician. You just say things and you just realize that when you say things, that they that you drop anchor, the whole world is hearing it. Hes running for the highest office in the land, he admitted to me early last summer, last fall, i reluctantly admit that i am a politician. He cant and people who support him cant keep using that excuse. He is indeed a politician. Someone who runs for president is a politician if you open the dictionary. A lot of people have ran for president of course and they didnt have the same difficulties that werent life long politicians but people usually are a little smather when they have had the opportunity to be up against opposition and the spin world out there, if you will. He will get his legs underneath him. He will get his legs underneath him. The door is closing. I have to ask you if you because i think people will think youre part of the establishment somewhat since you were a governor. And, you know, john mccain has thrown his support behind donald trump, so has paul ryan, but he has yet to do that. Do you think thats a mistake to say hes not supporting mccain, kelly ayotte, paul ryan, is that a mistake . Well, you know, senator mccain is from arizona and he started his career when i did. I think hes served arizona and our country well. I certainly have endorsed him and support him and i believe hes done great things for our country and with the times the way that they are now, i want him in my foxhole. I think all of america should want somebody of that caliber in our position hole and im going to work hard for him just as i am for donald trump. As time passes, donald trump is going to have to work with both paul ryan and jesse jackson, jr. Are you going to encourage him to endorse him . Or her mouth. But these people are perverted and they think it was another location. And i cut it short because i was talking about taxes or Economic Development so i said or whatever and i wanted to get back on the subject. I should have finished it out. I would have been much better. So they lied. Listen to the home from the interview exactly as it aired on august 7th last year. Lets talk about megyn kelly because you brought her up. She did push you, pushed a lot of people. What is it with you and megyn kelly . Well, i just dont respect her as a journalist. I have no respect for her. I dont think shes very good. I think shes highly overrated. When i came out there, im not getting paid for this. I go out there and they start saying lift up your arm and i didnt know there would be 24 Million People but i knew it would be a big crowd because i get big crowds, i get ratings, they call me the ratings machine. She gets out and starts asking me questions, blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever. But in my opinion, she was off base. And, by the way, not in my opinion, in the opinion of hundreds of thousands of people on twitter because it has been a brutal day, in one way a great day for fox, in another day in the twittersphere. In fact, youre competing against her and im doing your show so thats interesting. So donald trump went on for another two minutes before he finally changed the subject to how well he was doing in the poll. So the claim he made tonight is just, i will be kinder and say just not true. I want to bring in andre bauer, he is a trump supporter, angela rye and liz mayer, a group of republicans for johnson weld. I wonder why he would go back there, andre, because youre a supporter. Does he forget theres a videotape out there that says exactly what he says . Every week hes calling the media liars when were revetting it. I dont know why. These are opportunities he could be hammering Hillary Clinton, hammering messages of Economic Growth and creating jobs. I think this is buried in the weeds, its not helping. And you question where you go from here. I would hope hed get back on message quickly to i have to be honest with you, i dont mean to put you on the spot, i dont remember how many times youve been on this show and other people, you said the same thing i hope he would do that, kayleigh has said i hope he would do that, scottie said i hope he would do that and katrina pierson. When is he going to do it . He doesnt call me and seek advice. Are you tired of saying that as a supporter . I hate to see missed opportunities. Both candidates have their negatives and he could be pointing out some big ones that are key issues to people that are in the middle, swing voters that could easily be exposed to things that would drive her negatives up even further, true states that he ought to be hammering home like we see with the hostage trade deal. We were talking about the interview that Hillary Clinton had this weekend, she got four pinocchios for it and instead hes doing this. He quickly diverdictted to some the same old topics. We had a story when i was talking to people dancing in the streets or on the roof tops. I said in new jersey they were dancing. And, no, i said when the World Trade Center came down, nice, real nice. So heres the story by the way, those people that knocked down the World Trade Center most lick l likely under the trump policy wouldnt have been here to new york down the World Trade Center, just so you understand. So, liz, this is not showing political discipline, is it . Nobody had been talking about that for months now. No, it seems like hes almost on a Suicide Mission here. I feel for andre and other republicans who have chosen to get on board with donald trump. Realistically, we are in a situation now where this is pretty painful to watch. The only reason its not extraordinarily painful for me to watch is because im not supporting donald trump. With regard to on message off message, the real problem is that what donald trump is saying and doing is Donald Trumps message. I will put it in slightly more delicate terms than i did earlier this evening. This guy is a loud mouth, insert whatever phrase you you want right here, and he is somebody mostly head up on going over and over and over his ongoing list of grievances in media, whaer group of people so on and so forth. Thats not the Republican Party message, its not what the Republican Party wants his message to be. But that is his message and whats what were going to continue hearing now until election day. Heres the weird thing now. Andre and i like each other. Were friends and i hate to push you that way. But even if you point out to Trump Supporters, if you show them the tape of a falsehood, theyre going to say that youre biased or against donald trump where its like, no, hes running to president of the United States, he just lied to you, potter, and were looking ought for you and the american voters. What is going on here, angela . I think were stuck between a rock and a hard place in that you have Trump Supporters who arent traditional Republican Voters per se. So this vetting process seem like youre coming down on them. Ill never forget there was a woman leaving the rally and she was saying 2. 1 billion of free earned media doesnt sound to hard to me. Its just very interesting. Theyre not what is particularly interesting to me and id love to hear your take on this, andre and even you, liz, you have the republican establishment that couldnt figure out how to get another voter. They came up with this autopsy and you have donald trump come along and they dont want him but he was the only way that they would see a potential victory. So theyre stuck. They have people who dont like anything about the establishment conflicting with people who are the establishment and couldnt figure out how to get to a win. Bob, its interesting because i was speaking to a friend who works in real estate recently and he said, you know, in order to understand donald trump, you have to understand the world of real estate because, you know, people theres a tendency in real estate to oversell, to embellish, to always you say even so in this bad week for trump, there is still a silver lining. The only silver liking is were august august, we have about a hundred days to go. A lot of people on vacation. Dr has had a terrible week. Hes going to have to show political discipline, we we have not seen before. Unless that happens, i think youre going to see high profile republicans more than have been out there now possibly retracting their endorsement. So i do think that the things that donald trump is saying shows no discipline. Hes talking about the criticism that he has taken over the last several months and then repeating it to audiences. Hes got to be talking about Hillary Clinton, hes got to be talking about this iran payment of 400 million, he got to be talking about barack obama. I dont know if there is a trump 2. 0. Weve been waiting months and we havent seen it yet. Manifestly it has not. This is why youre seeing people starting to say, look, weve known for a long time that this guy wasnt a tenable option but theres nothing thats happening, nobodys coming to the rescue, nobody can save this anymore. The only option you have if you want to vote for somebody on the ballot in all 50 states and who is generally a republican and generally to the right of Center Discipline and somebody who doesnt come off as being completely crazy, bigoted, just plain lunatic a lot of the time, frankly will be if you vote for gary johnson and bill weld. Thats the only viable alternative. Tonight the town hall, they did a very good job of presenting themselves, seemed a lot more polished, a lot more detail specific and seemed a lot more ready to lead and so you may see a lot more people jump on board that train. Going after the khans, going after the president ial debate commission, who set up these debates a long time ago and complaining about it, i think hes going to need a lot of debates. I think donald trump should ask for more than three debates, should ask for five debates. Why . Because hes behind and behind double digits. Hes going to have to risk it do you think he knows enough about the issues, policy, Foreign Policy, to go toe to toe with Hillary Clinton . I think on Foreign Policy, hes the underdog and hed have to bone up. Is he going to have to bone up on policy . Absolutely. Angela, theres a new fox poll out that has trump down 10 points. Do you expect to see this tighten . I think its going to fluctuate. Were looking at numbers that come right after the Democratic National convention. I think that donald trump has a ton of work to do. On this debate thing, i just have to say this. There were 17 people in the primary. Its different when youre trying to get attention like you do with a tweet or youre trying to great jab in and youre name calling. He cant do that in a general election debate. Its oneonone. Its not happening. Hes not going to win the debate. Hillary clinton is a formidable debater. Do you remember her against barack obama or Bernie Sanders . She is a formidable debater. Youre being awfully quiet tonight. Do you think there should be more debates . If you were donald trump, would you take bobs advice and ask for more debates . Yes. He can continue to broaden the tent if more were exposed to it. His message is easier to sell and hes a business guy so its easy to draw the two together and its easy to beat up Hillary Clinton because shes got 40 years of voting and when youve been in public office, you got a lot bigger record he could beat up. We just spent the whole first segment saying he cant get on message. Do you think hes going to stay on message in two more debates . I dont think its an interesting idea and potentially if he stands on stage with Hillary Clinton more and does his usual routine of blustering, he might force her to have an aneurysm on live tv and that might be his best shot of becoming president.
