The latest news from around the world with hosts John Berman and Poppy Harlow. The latest news from around the world with hosts John Berman and Poppy Harlow. The 2016 election including some of President Trumps primary opponents. This does spook to trumps own administration. Speak to trumps own administration. The only person who doesnt see this is the president himself. This morning a series of tweets from the president but none condemning this. I was reminded instantly reading this of marco rubio. Marco rubio, the republican running for president in 2016 warned when the john Podesta Emails were coming out through wikileaks i want to warn my fellow republicans who may want to capitalize politically on these leaks, today its the intelligence agencies and in term of being able to stop this . I dont know that its u. S. Intelligence agencies or the president himself. There are two ways you can deter this conduct. One is to make it impossible for the adversary to succeed. You impose such a cost that your adversary says this isnt such a good idea. If youre sitting in Vladimir Putins shoes, a rational actor by all accounts and youre looking at the words and actions of President Trump, are you telling yourself after the enormous payoff you got in the 2016 election that this is something that wont be worth it or are you looking at trump saying this is the guy giving me the wink and green light. The president is insisting in a new interview he could run the Mueller Probe if he wanted to. Thats what he told reuters. Good morning, abby. This is a president whos changed his tune. For months hes been saying i want to sit down with mueller and his team for an interview but my lawyers wont let me but now hes echoing his legal team. Yeah, poppy. The change of tune from President Trump. The attacks on the powell is that seem to have escalated in their tone points to a sense of growing anxiety from the president about where this probe is headed. Look how often this month alone President Trump has attacked the Special Counsel in tweets, 67 times just this month. New in this interview with reuters the president is saying Something Different than weve heard before. Hes saying this idea of a perjury trap is real he says that because comey is best friends with mueller that mueller might believe comey over him prompting him to get into trouble. He also says this about the probe, indicating he Still Believes he has the ability to exert control. He says i could go in and do whatever, i could run it if i want. Im totally allowed to be involved if i wanted to be. So far ive chosen to be i havent chosen to be involved. Ill stay out. He added about the Mueller Probe that he believes its playing into the hands of russians. He says muellers probe played into the hands of russia. If it was russia, they played right into russias hands. Earlier in the program you were just talking to alex about this report from microsoft, the president indicates hes doubting whether or not it was the russians but all of this comes back to the Mueller Probe. Abby, thanks for the reporting. Susan hennessey, let me bring you back in to get a few beets with you on all of this. Let me read you the quote from the president where he tells reuters yeah, i think a sit down with mueller could be a perjury trap. Its my word against comeys and hes best friends with mueller so mewl might say well i believe comey and if im telling the truth that makes me a liar, thats not good. I dont know that comey and mueller are best friends. That aside, comey does have contemporaneous memos that could hold weight in the eyes of muellers team but if it would be comeys word versus the president s word on the obstruction issue, doesnt it have to do with whatteer witnesses say and who is corroborated by other witnesses . It goes to the basic question of what perjury is. Perjury is not bob mueller saying i believe one person or the other. A Perjury Trap Doesnt Mean what the president wants it to mean here, its wherever Law Enforcement conducts an interview not for investigative purposes but because they want to prosecute someone for perjury. Thats a separate question. This is not up to the diskrugs of the powell is. If the president s of the United States lied under oath about a material fact. All elements of the crime, that would have to be charged and proved yord in court so this notion that somehow the president is accidentally going to violate the law, thats not reasonable. On that point, too, when it comes to sort of the key witnesses for mueller, we know about don mcgahn, the white house counsels 30 hours before muellers team because theres no reporting in the Washington Post that says mcgahns own attorney, burke, told trumps legal team that mcgahn doesnt believe in those three days, 30 hours of being interviewed that he implicated the president in any league wrongdoing. How significant of a development is that . He left the question open, he was clear mcgahn didnt feel he personally witnessed criminal conduct and he would have resigned if he had. They say they dont know what other people might have told. I think theres a larger message that came in the prior story and that was mcgahn was most separated because he was concerned trump might be throwing him under the bus, it might be a john dean situation where the white house could be sell serves jail time and that means don mcgahn who is an experienced attorney through atmospherics or because he believe there is might be something specific believe there is is liability so he is taking steps to protect himself against that. Ahead, Security Clearance turned political weapon . The president threatens one excia officer officials clearance over a Television Appearance and now suggests former intel jeff James Clapper is being nice to him to keep his clearance. Also, three days of deliberations and no verdict in the trial for excampaign trail Paul Manafort. Were minutes away from day four kicking off. And the colorado man accused of killing his wife and two little kids is blaming his wife for their death. Christopher watts will appear in court in just hours. Wait until you hear this. I did mom. Is that it . Be nice to the president and keep your clearance . Hours earlier the president reacted to a clip between phil mudd facing off with paris dennard. The president called mudd unglued weird and asked if mudd should have his clearance pulled after mudd took offense thattothe notion he profits off that clearance. Watch this. Let me ask you one question. How much do you think im paid to do that at the request of the u. S. Government . Give me one answer and you have ten seconds . How much . Ill ask you a question. How much are you answer the question. For contracting were done. Were done. Get out. Lets discuss with cnn political analyst Margaret Evan and kaitlin huey burns. That was a wild raucous debate and goes to the heart of this, whether its actually profiting from, what the u. S. And the utility of these Security Clearances are to the intel. Heres what the president wrote even James Clapper had to ammonish general bran unanimous for going totally off the rails. Maybe clapper is being nice to me when so he doesnt lose Security Clearance for lying to the congress. He said maybe brennan went to far but he shares the concerns and fears we have here. With the white house dance around that this is about loyalty and if youre nice to him you keep your clearance . Im not sure that there is any aide in the white house who can make a parallel argument for what President Trump is doing because it reveals itself. Clapper, i dont think, has necessarily laid down a history of being nice to President Trump but what youre seeing across the board and different intel or former intelligence officials are expressing it with different Decibel Levels is a genuine dismay that the president is politicizing their careers and their efforts and the president is doing what hes doing because he feels he can politically. He doesnt feel there are repercussions at the ballot box for him. He doesnt feel republicans in congress are going to push back and he feels its an effective counterargument or distraction for some of the very real questions that the Mueller Probe has dredged up about his team during the campaign and since he took office. Let me read you something that struck us from conservative radio host of breitbart ben shapiro. Heres what he wrote about the president s handling of Security Clearance. Trump likes pardons and Security Clearances, anything he can treat as a reward or punishment in this governmental version of the apprentice. Fair analysis . Weve seen with pardons and hear with the threats and Going Forward with those threats to revirginia Tech Security clearances are trumpian tools of the presidency, that this particular president is taking advantage of it. With those tweets he is abandoning any pretense set by the white house that this was about national security. We saw last week trump was talking about the Mueller Probe, talking about the russia investigation when he was talking about revoking brennans Security Clearance and he hinted and said publicly that there could be others. Whats interesting here, too, is the animosity towards brennan among some remembpublicans has helpful to trump. Hes been using brennan as a way to hit back at the mueller investigation and to win in the court of Public Opinion which is very much part of a larger strategy here and then by talking about these other official official officials. Hillary clinton is back on the main stage, shes going to headline three fund raiser ins san francisco, chicago, and new york city. Its interesting shes focusing on fundraisers, focusing on democrats in cities not in these rural areas where she needed to win and didnt is is that the right calculation . Miscalculation . Is what democrats need right now . I think it looks like she is trying to do this in a measured way thats helpful and not unhelpful so youre seeing not jest geographically but the fact that these are closed door events and not large public rallies. That seems to be her way to split the difference in parts of the base without hurting the democrats who might be benefitting from her. I got in my inbox i got a note from the Republican Party entitled still with her . Drawing attention and raising questions about the efficacy. Chelsea clinton a definite maybe in terms of a political run for the future. Talks about if it could have a positive impact then maybe. What do you think . I dont know theres a big appetite in democrat among this day in age for the clinton era. I think the election was showed us that. Whats interesting here is that were seeing republican campaigns still seize on the clintons as an anchor around Democratic Candidates and its a way to appeal to those soft republican voters, those voters who either voted for trump reluctantly to remind them in their view of the Democratic Party this as theyre trying to combat trumps own unpopularity. Thank you both, kaitlin, mar rhett, appreciate it. Next, back to verdict watch, day four of deliberations about to kick off in the trail of Paul Manafort and we are minutes away from the opening bell on wall street and the Lovely Christine Romance is with me. The jury in Paul Manaforts bank and tax fraud trial are getting back to work right now deliberating already for three days, more than 21 hours. Today is day four and were waiting for the outcome inside the courthouse. Were getting new details about whats happening outside the courthouse. Jessica snyder joins us in virginia. Day four. You have the lawyers on manaforts side saying they are happy this is a good sign for them. Is it . Thats the big question. Thats how the defense is spinning it. Theyve said several times the longer this jury takes deliberating the better the chances are for Paul Manafort to be acquitted in this case but the true story here is that this is a very complicated case. This is a financial crimes trial. 18 counts bank fraud, tax fraud, foreign bank accounts. So this jury has to go Metallically Count by count. Theyre sifting through, weve talked about the numbers, 388 documents, the testimony of 27 witnesses so while the defense team is trying to spin this, its hard to read the tea leaves. The jury deliberated yesterday for eight and a half hours not saying a word. The only note they sent is that they wanted to go to 6 15 so that was longer than we saw them go the first two days. The defense team wants to spin it their way but we dont know. Could we see a verdict today . Perhaps. Could bit another day . Perhaps as well. They need a unanimous jury, this is a criminal case. How is the defense team waiting it out . Its interesting. Theres quite a scene out here and because theyre on day four its become a welloiled machine. The prosecutors are inside the courthouse, they have an office. The defense team dont have offices so they are across the street in the hotel bar and effort they camp out at what has become their own Reserve Table at the bar. The defense team is Milling Around the bar Waiting Thissous like the rest of us. Were outside camped out outside the krause. They walk into the courthouse every morning where we see them, they greet us, they said theyre feeling good like theyve said every morning. Poppy . Jessica schneider, The Waiting Game continues. Thank you. Ahead, a really important story. The administration is rolling back obamaera regulations on coal fuel power plants but at what cost to Public Health . Next. Doesnt anticipate much from the continued trade talks with china because in his words china has been spoiled for too long. This comes as were expecting a second round of tariffs on chinese goods on thursday. China expected to retaliate with more tariffs on American Made goods. Christine romans is here. The president was saying im taking the long game and i dont think china will change any time soon. We dont know how much of this is him putting down the markers for the negotiation but this is what he said in particular, he said it will take time because china has done too well for too long and theyve become spoiled. Im possibly meeting with chinese president xi in november. Well see. A lot of well sees here. We have a Trade Delegation coming from china to washington. He says i dont anticipate anything coming out of it so this is the tone hes giving the to the press and the chinese ahead of those meetings so what happened here . An important mile marker because at the stroke of midnight on thursday tariffs will be collected on chemicals, motorcycles, handbags, toasters. Things people will feel. China promised to dollar for dollar retaliate. Im going to buy a new toaster this week. True story. You need one . A fancy one. On a serious note, the attacks on the Federal Reserve. The president keeps attacking this independent body that is so important to be independent in this country. The Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserves new chair. Think of the Federal Reserve as the Shock Absorbers on the economy. You dont want a president or congress deciding about the Shock Absorbers on the car. This should be an independent body and it is. The president saying that he needs more help from jerome powell. Hes not happy about Interest Rates rising. I wanted to go back in time to two years ago. The second debate when the president had the opposite position. He was accusing the fed chief then and the president of inflating the stock market and using the fed for political purposes. We have a Fed Doing Political things. This janet yellen of the fed, the fed is doing political. So hes complaining this fed is not doing that for him while hes trying to level the playing field. He says hed like Interest Rates to stay low. Jerome powell for the record just last month is on the record saying the Fed Doesnt Act politically. Listen. We do our work in a strictly nonpolitical way based on Detailed Analysis which we put on the record transparently. We dont take Political Considerations into account. Theres an annual central Banker Convention in jackson hole. I cant believe im saying this. Youre geeking out. But its exciting. Through the prism of an Executive Branch that is criticizing the Federal Reserve here. Higher Interest Rates could weigh on that ch. The Trump Administration is green lighting a rollback of obamaera clean Air Provisions that critics say could come at the expense of Public Health. It aimed to reduce Greenhouse Gases from power plants by 32 from where they were in wife the and they had to do this by 2030. Its also federally regulating emissions for the first time, but that will go away. This is a proposal signed by Andrew Wheeler who once worked as a Coal Industry Lobbyist and it now puts the power in the hands of the states to decide Emission Standards and set them for coal fired power plants. States would have the right to forego regulating these coal plants and their emissions. Lets go to dr. Sanjay gupta for more. Obviously there are reasons why there are limits on how much is emitted into the air. What does this mean for the average american. And the United States is known for clean air. You go places around the world and you often cant count on big cities having clean air. People think about Greenhouse Gases and Climate Change and weatherrelated events. The Public Health community, youre talking about particulates. Air pollution is small particulates that you cant see, theyre about onethirtieth the sides of a hair. We know what that does to the body now, the impact that it can have on the body particularly to people who have underlying illness, specifically heart and lung disease. Those are people who will be the most adversely impacted by this no nonfatal Heart Attacks as well. These are the things that are of concern when you have more pollution and let me tell you the numbers in terms of the numbers of people affected. 1500 to 3600 premature deaths annually. Decreasing those deaths would have been a benefit of the clean power plan. 90,000 asthma attacks. 1700 Heart Attacks. You can read the numbers but theres a direct Health Benefit to reducing air pollution. I almost cant believe im saying that but there is and people generally know it. These are specifics to have in your back pocket. And not just coalfired power plants, this has to do with changes when it comes to cars and trucks on the road that are huge polluters. A lot of people may have never seen a coalfired power plant so you dont get the context sometimes but if you looked at how much you would reduce overall emissions by 2030 under the clean power act it would be the equivalent of taking 160 million cars off the road so by the year 2030 you would have taken 160 million cars off the road. Under this Affordable Clean Energy rule which will be kiss cussed in about two minutes, it will be like taking Eight Million cars off the road. 160 million additional cars off the road within the next 12 years under the previous legislation. It looks like this plan would still mean over a long period of time the amount of coal being used in those pollutants going down but in a much slower fashion so its like a bandaid on the pain because there is pain for people whose jobs rely on that but this is not a complete reversal. It will slow it down and hurt the environment and Public Health in the meantime. Yes, you said 3 reduction by 2030. This would be. 7 to 1. 5 reduction so you can put numbers on it. And theres another impact as well which youre alluding to and that is there are other cleaner sources of energy out there. If they are not propped up how does that affect our overall trend towards cleaner energy in the future . Sanjay gupta, thank you. Good doctor, for walking us through that. An important change. Ahead, a disturbing story with a stunning, stunning update. A colorado father accused of killing his wife and daughters is set to answer charges today as the suspect makes this stunning accusation. Prosecutors are not buying that. More now from Scott Mcklain who is in colorado. Reporter police say that chris watts confessed had killing his wife but not their two young daughters.
