Lifted more than 200 to safety. But officials fear many more may still be trapped calling this a mass casualty event with a dozen people already injured. Cnns Paul Vercammen is monitoring the situation. Paul, what are you learning about the efforts to get the fires under control at this hour . Reporter many of the fires now burning are either 0 contained, 5 contained and Richard Cordova of captain of california fire telling me with this latest fire burning, we have broken the alltime california record for acres burned. We now stand at 2 million 94,000 acres burned in california and his concern it is only september. We have the harrowing months of october and november still to come with the santa ana wnds come. Come to the fire in the Sierra National forest. 24 people have been evacuated from the mammoth reservoir. Two remain by their own choice. Of those people evacuated we understand that 20 of them had to be transported to neighboring hospitals in fresno county. The nature of the injuries, burns as well as broken bones and this fire has now burned 45,000 acres according to cal fire, sending up a massive cloud, 8 or 9 miles high ear create their own weather and theyre now evacuating other lakes in this Sierra Nevada forest. At bass lake they have been told to reduce the boats to 5 miles per hour. People are on the boat in midday and it looks like nighttime. So a dangerous situation there. Of course they factor in all of this. These hellish fires as theyre described by the county fires in california is the heat. We will see heat again to break records. Some of those temperatures reaching up to 118 degrees in places in valleys where they never see this type of heat. Unbelievable those aerial images. You breaking that news to us from the fire chief, 2,094,000 acres burned in the state and that is a record nobody wants to hear. Paul vercammen, thank you so much. Stay safe. A truly terrifying situation for people trapped in the fires. Look at the moment when a group of hikers tried to drive to safety as the fire closed in on them. Oh my gosh. Just keep going. Oh my god. Just keep going. Just keep going. Oh [ bleep ]. [ bleep ]. Oh my god. We did it. We made it. All right [ bleep ]. Joining me is a hiker, juliana park. Im so happy youre safe right now because the images are terrifying. The video of you in the car trying to drive through. I dont want to ask you how you were feeling because we could hear it in realtime. Oh my god, oh my god. Walk us through what happened and when did you realize you were in desperate need to get out . Thank you. Yeah. I actually hadnt listened to that audio. I muted it when i posted it on twitter because of the i didnt want to relive what we were feeling. But a group of us, five of us, wanted to go backpacking at the time of that location was not on fire. We departed very early. We hit the mammoth trailhead around 1 00 p. M. And we had noticed the sky was a lot hazier. We had hiked maybe two miles when we heard thunder. And thats when we decided to turn back. A Smaller Group behirnd nd us ct up to us and asked us what that might have been. All of us not having cell service decided it is best to turn back to the cars. I think if we stayed ten minutes more we might not have been so lucky. We ran into a ranger on the road, on the 6so1 trail and she was able to lead up to the point of that spot fire and it was actually per her instruction that we drove through that fire. She said it was the only way down and it hadnt yet crossed the road and that we just had to drive through it. That ranger was really your Guardian Angel and savior. Truly. Can you explain to us how quickly in a time lapse you went from seeing a hazy sky to being engulfed by flames all around you . Yeah. I would say it was maybe a little under two hours. I look at photos because at the time i was on a hike with just some hazy air. That became, you know, soon ash rain. We were Wearing Masks but it was getting harder to breathe, harder to see. I would say between the time of 1 30 p. M. And 4 00 p. M. We could see that, you know, we needed to leave immediately. Yeah. Well, this area for those that dont know is very popular, especially around Labor Day Weekend. Did you see a lot of other people out there while you were hiking . When we arrived we did see at least 15 other cars. We saw people setting up camp, their tents were pitched and we saw i guess footprints of other backpackers going down into the valley. And then when we turned around we only saw maybe one or two cars left. Wow. Lets hope theyre all safe, as well. We are so glad that you are safe and sound at home. Thank you. Thank you for listening to that audio for the first time. I know that was traumatic for you but its a good model for those who are at home watching this trying to get a sense of how things are out there. Things change on a dime. Thank you so much. Stay safe. Thank you. Complicating the Fire Fighting and rescue efforts, an intense record breaking heat wave hitting california. Meteorologist tom sater joins me now. I dont know if you heard that conversation with juliana but the things change so quickly. Talk about the impact of the heat on this. She said she heard thunder. Is there any relief in sight for those people . Right. You know, there might be a little bit. Theres a cold front expected to come into Northern California but the more south it moves it will break up and not bring rain with it but Cool Temperatures down but theres 13 states right now under red flag warnings and advisories and many see a dramatic drop in temperatures. We will go from air conditioners to heaters by monday, tuesday morning. We talked about the clouds and blue skies for everyone. Tents are pitched and out of nowhere you see this billowing effect and a satellite image shows this especially for the creek fire. This one grew at 600 in the aerial coverage. We have seen this time and time again with fires this season and the last few seasons. The greater the steep of the terrain the faster the flames move up and the embers into the next area and the valleys. In imagery is something. Blue skies. These are not storms. Fires from blue skies to choking smoke across all of california. High pressure is so strong that it pushes the weight of the atmosphere down to the surface so not only is it compressing the air and heating it up but creating that smoke into the valleys and homes. Over 80 High Temperature records will be broken today and tomorrow. Denver at 101 degrees and temperatures in the 30s tuesday morning. 50 million americans under excessive heat warnings and advisories. What a shocking change for areas and will help firefighters in montana, colorado, possibly even new mexico. With a drop like this, 98 degrees sunday to 36 on tuesday for denver and the mountain snows. I wish there was more of it to help the firefighters. Just remember the thousands of people working on this labor day to keep everybody safe from the park service to the hospital crews and Emergency Management and of course the firefighters. Our hats off to them working around the clock nonstop this summer. Tom, thank you so much. We are getting our first look at damning new details of a new book from one of president s closest former allies. Attorney Michael Cohen calls his former boss a bully, racist, predator and a con man. Disloyal a memoir is out on tuesday and adds to the growing list of insider accounts on President Trump and his character. Cohen details the former bosss alleged racist view of black leaders specifically barack obama and Nelson Mandela and the disdain of black people and hispanics in general and his own supporters and cohen adds to the narrative that trump has a deep admiration of russian president Vladimir Putin. Brian seltzer, theres so much that jumps out here. So much should be shocking and heard the similar accounts. What stood out to you in this particular book . Cohen is adding to the narrative of President Trump as a con man, a swindler and a racist. Those are the themes that come through loud and clear in disloyal. It is the best selling book thanks to preorders. So let me read a couple quotes from the copy of cnn in advance. Talking about race, this is cohen alleging that trump talks this way about race saying, quote, i will never get the hispanic vote. Like the blacks, theyre too stupid to vote for trump. Theyre not my people. Thats one instance of cohen quoting trump making racist remarks. Other examples cohen says trump talked about black leaders of black countries saying those countries are shole countries. We have heard that disparaging remark before. And then the other big narrative of the book is about the president s, you know, appreciation of Vladimir Putin, his desire to be more like the russian leader. Heres a quote talking about cohen viewing the use of power. The most extreme uses of power as trump began to seriously contemplate the implications of power and how he could leverage it to the absolute maximum level possible. Theres a theme throughout the story of trump using political actions to benefit the business actions, trying to get a tower built in moscow and things like that. So well hear from cohen giving interviews starting on tuesday and clearly believes its an essential preelection read and i think obviously trying to sway the election in bidens favor with this tellall book. And explaining this admiration for Vladimir Putin is very simple, comes down to power and money. Of course we know that Michael Cohen is a flawed character. Hes lied before congress. Those are the allegations in defense thats coming from the white house, as well. But i was really struck by something he said in this book and you alluded to this. He said you have the information you need to decide for yourself in november. I have to think we have heard similar, shocking accounts about the president before. Just look at the atlantics bombshell reporting of d disparaging military members and thus far it doesnt seemed to have moved the needle. Do you think this book will have the impact that Michael Cohen seems to suggest it should . I think its great to have the fullest possible picture of all of people running. Thats what mary trumps book contributed to and john bolton and woodward. Imagine if Barack Obamas best friend, one of his lawyers came out with a tellall book saying obama was a predator and a con man and a it is unbelievable. We are in such crazy territory but in terms of the white house response it is pretty obvious. The statement of the press secretary says he is a disbarred lawyer that lied to congress, lost all credibility and trying to profit off of lies. Heres the thing she leaves out. The reason why cohen lied is in defense of dwomp. Right. The reason he was convicted of lying is in service to donald trump. This is what it was all about. He was lying to protect his boss so thats where the explanations of cohen being not lacking credibility because hes a liar falls apart and tries to make amends in the book and striking to read from a president s former ally. Loyal being a one way street from the president s perspective. I hate to leave you without mentioning your book, hoax. Also a best seller with a sense of all the craziness and understanding of how we got here and i urge everybody to buy it not just because youre a colleague and friend but an important read and congratulations on that book, as well. Thank you. People can read it in next two days before the cohen comes out. September is going to be an extraordinary month full of trump books and just glad i came out in august. Okay . Today we are allowing 9,000 people on the beach but if we didnt monitor the badges you would get 20,000 and no distancing whatsoever so a main reason to extend the season is to monitor and then the other reason is really keeping life guards on so were getting a really ver real diverse population coming to the beach and the beach staff, we want to make sure we have lifeguards. Reporter some people are not Wearing Masks. We strongly suggest everybody wear a mask. We have a Maskup Campaign an
