I think what we are expecting tuesday night is what you would expect more out of a president ial debate than what we saw last monday night. You moderated one of the debates for his run as governor in 2005. What did you learn . I learned how sharp he is. He is a tough debater. He can process a lot of information very quickly and he can reformulate it in response to questions that he hadnt even expected. I remember that debate well because i had not watched him debate before. Once it was over, i remember turning to him as we were leaving the studio and saying youre really good at this. Indeed he was. Lets turn to mike pence. Most analysts say Hillary Clinton won the first debate on monday night. Does mike pence go into the debate with that as context in the back of his mind . Does he go in feeling he has to compensate for what the top of the ticket did on monday . He may feel a little of that, but the stakes are a lot lower in a Vice President ial debate. The audience is almost always many millions lower than it was for the president ial contest. The great exception was sarah palin versus joe biden. This is not that kind of contest. I think voters learn a lot by tuning in. I hope they do. I dont think that either candidate given their experience in Public Office and in the world of debates will be unable to take on these challenges. Do you expect that well stick to policy and not of the issues of race or birtherism that we saw come up in the first debate . Well, its 90 minutes, victor. Something tells me there will be high points and there will be low points. Some of those issues will come up. Some people talked about mike pence introducing the personal issues against bill clinton, which would be very foolish, obviously. The thing which is interesting, you know his advisers and some people supporting him are probably trying to rein some things in behind the scenes, but publicly now, theyre being critical of his tactics. Right after the debate, we heard from advisers largely anonymously on background and different newspaper articles saying they did not think trump prepped well enough. Almost trying to goad or shame him into prepping into the second faceoff with Hillary Clinton. Some advisers floating that make Chris Christie should take the reins of the debate prep. He can speak brutally to trump. That was behind the scenes. Now supporters have stepped out and publicly saying what many have been saying behind the curtain. Trump had a bad week. Lets listen to what Newt Gingrich had to say recently. I think what trumps got to understand is he has to say i got to be me or sing a new song. Ive got to be president. Theyre not the same song. He has to become more disciplined. For a while there, i thought he turned a corner. This last week, i think has been, frankly a lost week. A week that hurt him and shaken his supporters. Reporter investigators are looking at the trains event recorders to explain what caused the fatal crash. There were two recorders on board. One on the front of the train in the cab which has yet to be recovered due to the damage. And another in the locomotive. Which is in the ntsbs hands. We were unable to download the recorder. The ntsb is working with the manufacturer of the recorder to perform the download. Reporter there were outward facing video recorders on both ends of the train and questions to why this train and others like it were not equipped with positive train control. As you know, the ntsb has been recommending ptc for 40 years. We will look at that. We will look at whether there is positive train control installed and all of the aspects related to that before we come to any conclusions. Reporter packed with passengers, the train came into the station too fast and crashed into a bumper and went airborne killing a woman on the platform and injuring more than 100. The trains engineer, 40yearold Thomas Gallagher was released from the hospital. He has not yet spoken to the National Transportation safety board investigators. He has been with the Transit System for 29 years. Could he have been incapacitated . Experts will look into that and if alcohol or drugs could be a factor.
