Agreement to destorerestore diplomatic relations for the first time in more than 50 years. Lets talk live in the cnn newsroom. Good morning to you. Im pamela brown in for carol costello. Thank you for being with us today. We begin with breaking news out of greeleyville South Carolina. Were expecting a News Conference to begin at any moment now. These are live pictures of their town hall. Officials are expected to speak about the fire that burned the mt. Zion ame church last night, the sixth black church to have burned in recent weeks. The fbi and atf havent linked these fires and there were reports of lightning in the area around the time of the fire. Our Victor Blackwell joins us from town hall in greeleyville South Carolina with r h. Whats the latest . Reporter were looking at members of the state house and state senate. I think theyre about to begin. Lets listen. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to greeleyville South Carolina that we affectionately refer to as the small town with a big heart. Last evening, we witnessed a Church Building consumed by fire. We distinguish Church Building from the church for we know that the church rests in the hearts and minds of its members and those of us who appreciate the church and what it represents. My name is ronnie sabb. Im a state senator for district 32. Let me make a couple of brief remarks. Then well have others that will come and address you. I really want to start off by expressing my appreciation to all of those volunteer firefighters not only from here in greeleyville and the surrounding areas, but also from the county next door and Berkeley County and our friends and neighbors all who came here and worked hand in hand to do what they could to make certain that there were no injuries or fatalities and to save as much of the structure as they could. We witnessed them performing magnificently, extremely proud of what they did and what they attempted to do. Let me also express my appreciation for the leadership from the ame church. Pastor reverend john taylor elder alan parrot. The ame Church Continues to be the kind of institution thats woven into the fabric of america and what makes america strong and the leadership that they experienced last night was stellar. And we just simply want to express our appreciation to them. We appreciate all of the leadership from the surrounding area some of whom are with us now. We are just asking simply that we give Law Enforcement the opportunity that they need. We have full confidence in our Law Enforcement. I spoke with our chief of s. L. E. D. This morning who dispatched the members of his organization immediately when they got the request from our chief. They were here along with the atf unit and they pledged every bit of resources that is necessary in order for us to find out the origin of this fire. And so we simply want to not stand in judgment, allow Law Enforcement to do what it does best and again, we have full confidence in their ability to do just those things. Im now going to ask the mayor of the town of greeleyville jesse parker to please come forth and give a couple of brief remarks. Good morning, everyone. My name is jesse parker. And im mayor of the town of greeleyville here. I think senator sabb has pretty much covered most of what i would say here this morning. Let me just say that greeleyville is a Small Community with a big heart, like he said. Youre in a community where Everybody Knows everybody. Everybody calls each other around here by their first name. And when we went out to the scene last night, we were saddened by what we saw there. I can remember some 19 to 20 years ago being on that same site when then president bill clinton came down and helped to dedicate that church from one that was burned a couple of years earlier and to ride up there last night and to see the church in flames again, it gives you an ill feeling. Like we said we dont know what happened what started the fire. Were going to yield that to s. L. E. D. And all the other Law Enforcement officials to figure out what happened out there. But well just say right now that well continue to pray for that church. We ask that you continue to pray for the church and the greeleyville community. Because we need prayer at this time. Its a hurtful feeling and sad to know such a thing has happened just that quick. It felt almost like just a few years ago. When i rode up there last night, it brought back all those old memories as to what happened at that time. We just ask that you continue to pray for greeleyville pray for the church and well get through this. Thank you. At this time we want to bring up elder alan parrot. Good morning. First of all, on behalf of Bishop Richard Franklin Norris the presiding bishop here in South Carolina he wishes to express his love and concern to the members of mt. Zion african methodist methodist episcopal church. Secondly our concern is for the Church Family and for this larger community, that they Stay Together and we move forward and seek to help them to get back to a place where they need to be in terms of a Worship Center and site. So we are a little distressed whenever something happens to a place of worship. It causes you to feel a great deal of remorse. But at the same time we are never without hope. And so weeping indeed endures for a night but joy always comes in the morning. And so the commitment of the membership, the pastor reverend john taylor is to move forward and i want to thank county supervisor Stanley Paisley whos already indicated that they will help in providing us with temporary worship site until we can move forward. So again, we continue to lift up the mt. Zion Church Family and pray that things will work out. Thank you. At this time i want to present the state representative Caesar Mcknight who serves as representative of this area. Representative . Good morning. Thank you, elder parrot. Its with a heavy heart that we see that we have lost this is a press conference there in greeleyville, South Carolina. Were hoping to hear from investigators. If we do, well bring you back there. The leaders there from South Carolina there saying at this point we still dont know the cause of this church fire. The mt. Zion ame church a Historic Church and the sixth church to burn down just in the past few weeks. For more on the investigation, for more on this i want to bring in cnn Law Enforcement analyst and former fbi assistant director tom fuentes along with security expert and former atf executive matthew horace. Thank you both for being with us. Tom, lets start with you here. When you hear about so many churches in such a short period of time being burned down like this what goes through an investigators head . First of all, pamela if i could add that i just learned within the last ten minutes from senior officials at the fbi, this fire has been determined to not be arson. And they also have information from the National Weather Service Radar system that there were Lightning Strikes involved. But they have found the fbi and atf investigators at the scene have just reported back to their headquarters that there was no accelerant found and no evidence whatsoever that this church fire was arson. It is strongly believed at this point that this was a lightningstarted fire. Tom fuentes breaking news for us here. But regardless you cant help but notice the fact that this is the sixth black church dealing with this situation, matthew. The atf got called in immediately not only because its a religious institution but because of what weve been seeing. Were learning that its likely the lightning that caused this fire. But i imagine there was a tremendous amount of concern this could be something more sinister initially. Sure. Given the current climate, that may always be a concern of the community. But a fire is a fire until its determined to be an arson or until theres another determination made. And weve seen these other fires have been determined to be an arson following the shooting of the nine People Killed in that charleston church. It had been reported that agents had been going out, bringing out the sniffer dogs when the embers cool. Tell us what that process is like. What are they looking for and how are they able to so quickly determine that it was lightning that may have caused this . Let me tell you what happens. Our sole responsibility is to develop a cause and origin exactly what happened and what caused the fire. That begins with interviewing the people who first put eyes on the fire scene. The firefighters whether volunteer or paid firemen, what color were the flames, what color was the smoke, how old is the building whats the size of the building and what other evidence you can find around the scene. That will include accelerantsniffing k9s. In this case theyve already declared its not an arson. That helps us to be able to move on and gather the facts and validate that fact. We hope to hear from the investigators on the ground there. The leaders said we still dont know for sure and of course that press conference is still ongoing. But, tom, even if this was caused by lightning, there have been a number of other fires at black churches recently. How can agents determine whether or not these fires are linked . Well first of all, what matthew said is a big part of this. The atf experts working with the fbi experts determine first of all arson or other causes. And they start with that. What the fbi additionally does it has a very extensive domestic terrorism program, particularly against White Hate Groups kkk going back 100 years and many other, aryan nation and other such groups and determine from their websites is anybody taking credit, is anybody linked to one or more of these attacks chattering online or through their social networks. Thats a big part of this is the intelligence. But on a national basis, there is a Single Church fire every single day of the week in the United States. And about 60 of these fires, which are all denomination all religions, all ethnicities, all races, about 60 of those fires are determined to be arson. And the vast majority of those are determined to be Insurance Fraud cases. Now, this case is believed lightning. But im just saying on a general basis that when lightning doesnt strike and many of these churches are old. In some cases, more than 100 years old. So the slightest electrical spark or gas leak or Lightning Strike can bring a whole church down very very quickly based on just the age of the building and the construction of the building also. But, yes, the efforts to try to determine if theres a White Hate Group behind this if individuals acting alone or acting as part of a group in a network, in a conspiracy, have done this there is extensive investigation to try to determine that and bring them to justice if thats the case. Tom fuentes, matthew horace, thank you very much. Still to come right here in newsroom, concerns over an isisinspired attack over the Holiday Weekend here in the u. S. Meantime heavily armed Police Squads bombsniffing dogs and Radiation Detection units will be out in force this july 4th Holiday Weekend. Law enforcement officials are stepping up security from coast to coast. Theyre trying to prevent possible lone wolf terror attacks by isis supporters. In a joint bulletin to 18,000 Law Enforcement agencies nationwide the fbi and the department of Homeland Security warn this upcoming Holiday Weekend could be, quote, an attractive target for attackers. For more on this lets bring in cnn justice reporter evan perez and cnn intelligence and security analyst robert baer. Evan why are authorities more concerned about this fourth of july . This year is more so than past partly because of the increased activity by that the fbi and other Law Enforcement officials see from isis supporters here in the United States. Theres hundreds of them that are under monitoring that are being investigated around the country. And what the concern is really about the ones that fbi and Law Enforcement is afraid they dont know about. Its the people that they havent found yet and really some of this the change in their attitude about this came about after the attack in garland, texas, a few weeks ago. It really alerted them to the idea that there are some attackers out there who perhaps are not on their radar and thats what theyre worried about. Robert, lets talk about that. As evan pointed out, theyre more worried about what they dont know. Were being told there isnt specific incredible intelligence suggesting there will be an attack on july 4th. But why is it so difficult . Explain to us why its so difficult for authorities to know ahead of time if somethings going to happen given the current threat environment . Well pam, the fbi are on these people. They get on the net. New beheadings. But doesnt mean the Islamic State doesnt mean these guys are theres also the possibility there are people that dont go on the internet dont get on the phone, call syria or iraq and are simply looking at their copycats. Theyre looking at the shootings in france and in tunisia and say, this is the way im supporting the Islamic State. And theres no sign of them. Theres knoll the fbi can do about that. And thats their major fear. Troubling when you think about that. Authorities are doing what they can to put precautions forward before this weekend. Were learning the nypd will have bombsniffing dogs and heavily armed Police Squads out on the streets. But are there other measures the public may not be aware of that authorities are likely to take this year to counter the Terror Threat . I think the fbi will be more aggressive than the police. Theyll knock on peoples doors, get search warrants try to look through people stuff, see if they have a weapon. Its that kind of connection theyre looking for. Whether theres an overt act that one of these people take. Its a needle in a haystack. They are on this. But one is going to get through eventually. I keep hearing when i talk co counterterrorism officials hearing the word defuse. Its so hard to keep track and detect all the threats out there. Thank you both for coming an and explaining that to us. We want to turn back to that fire that burned the mt. Zion ame church in South Carolina last night. Officials spoke just moments ago saying its too early to pinpoint a cause. As far as the facts surrounding that question we havent ruled anything in or anything out at this point. Were going to let the case dictate and were going to investigate it as the facts will ultimately determine who occurred. I can tell you weve been working with our state and local partners. As of last night when we got called we had special agents arrive on the scene last night as well as certified fire investigators and theyve been working the scene diligently all night with our state and local partners. That fire marking the sixth black church to have burned in recent weeks. As we heard there, investigators have not linked any of the fires. But there were reports of lightning in that area around the time of the fire. Well be right back. Stay with us. Verizon say neversettle. Tmobile agrees. Never settle for verizons overpriced gimmicks. For the first time in more than five decades, the cuban flag will soon fly high in the nations capital, right in front of the Cuban Embassy. Thats because the u. S. And cuba have reached a historic agreement to reopen the embassies. All of this according to two Senior Administration officials. The announcement which has been in the works for months now, will mark one of the final steps in restoring full diplomatic ties between both countries long sprintered by cold war tensions. And weve leopard a letter from president obama has been delivered to cubas leader raul castro. This video right here shows the u. S. Ambassador handing off the note at the Cuban Foreign ministry. Lets get to Cnns Wolf Blitzer in washington for more on this. Wolf an honor to have you on to talk about this. What do we expect to hear from the president today . The president will announce that the full diplomatic relationship with cuba who has been in the works now for six months is finally going to get going. The tentative date is around july 22nd for the u. S. Embassy, a formal embassy to be opened in havana a Cuban Embassy to be opened here in washington, d. C. The First Time Since 1961 when then president Dwight Eisenhower broke off the diplomatic relationship with the castro regime in havana. This is a Huge Development in u. S. cuban relations. Theres been an diplomatic interest session. The head of that session, the u. S. Official he is a u. S. Diplomat. He doesnt have an ambassadorial rank. There will be a full embassy in halve full ambassador in havana and a full ambassador here in washington. Some oppose the development and expansion of that building which will be a formal u. S. Embassy as opposed to a diplomatic interest section technically under control of the swiss government. There will be opposition once the president formally nominates someone, that person has to be confirmed by the u. S. Congress. But the sense is this train is leaving the station, the full diplomatic relationship will be announced in the rose garden in the next few minutes when the president shows up there and then the process will get forward culminating at the end of july when presumably secretary of state john kerry will go to havana to formally open that u. S. Embassy. As you point out, while this is a big step its not the final step in restoring our relationship. Wolf blitzer, thank you so much for that. Our Elena Machado is in miami. What are they telling you . Reporter no one is surprised among the cuban american community. We saw a very mixed but strong reaction among some members of the cuban american community. Some of the younger generations favoring change people who were part of the older generations, the people who lived through the cuban revolution who came to this country in the 50s and 60s were staunchly opposed to any change in terms of cuban american relations. What were hearing here is more along those lines. The people who opposed any change or saying they dont favor the opening of the embassies. But if you look around me not many people out here not the kind of response that we saw back in december when these official changes came out. Alina machado, thank you for the perspective there from miami. Well have live coverage of that big announcement between the u. S. And cuba at the top of the hour. Still to come right here in newsroom, donald trump moving up in the latest cnn poll. But does he have a shot at beating Hillary Clinton . Were going to discuss that right after this break. Macys pulling the donalds merchandise from its shelves. But this is good news for the gop candidate. A new cnn poll showing bush leading the field at 19th . And donald trump is in second with 12 . Mike huckabee ben carson and rand paul rounding out the top five. Bush has improved his standings by six points since may. But trumps gains are even more impressive. He is up nine points. So whats behind this urgent support for trump and can it last . Here to break down the numbers for us Donna Brazile and margaret hoover. Donna, starting with you great to have you both with us. We have a lot to talk about. I have a feeling some strong opinions are about to come out. Trump doubling down on those inflammatory remarks against mexico and Illegal Immigrants but he continues to not only gain in the polls but really surge. Why is he resonating . This is just a moment for donald trump. Weve seen this movie before. Donald trump knows how to excite a crowd. Hes an entertainer. He knows how to rally the most conservative of the conservative base. But unfortunately i think his inflammatory remarks, insensitive, intolerant comments will get him in trouble and get the Republican Party in trump. The sooner donald trump gets off the stage and allow the more serious candidates to compete for the votes, the republicans will be better off. But as a democrat and someone who believes in the inclusiveness and the tolerance and the diversity of our country, i would hope that mexican americans and other immigrants wouldnt be insulted by donald trump. Hes an entertainer. Hes trying to incite the crowd. I dont think his opinions resonate with the republican or the democratic party. Its an insult. In the wake of those controversial remarks, his merchandise has been pulled from the shelves at macys. And heres what macys is saying. In light of statements made by donald trump which are inconsistent with macys value, we have decided to discontinue our business relationship with mr. Trump this follows nbc and univision. But could all of this actually enhance his image with voters because, again, his poll numbers went up in the wake of this. This is a flash in the pan. It shows its a shortterm benefit. And i think this run for donald trump is nothing more than a marketing play for hip. Well see if hes serious in 120 days. Thats exactly how long he has. Hes got two 45day extensions and another 30day extension before he has to put all of his Financial Information on paper for the American People to see. Does anybody think that donald trump actually wants that level of transparency into his finances his personal finances . Actually is he actually worth 9 billion . Well see. I think hes in just long enough to shake up the field for the first couple of debates and then get out. You talk about shaking up the field, you think that Chris Christie can benefit from him. How so . Chris christie benefits the most from donald trump. The hit against Chris Christie was hes too brash, hes too frank. He cant be the president of the United States. Well Chris Christie didnt call mexicans rapists and drug runners. Hes won twice in a blue state and took the latino vote up to 19 . So Chris Christie in comparison to donald trump actually is a statesman. Interesting perspective there. Lets pivot to the democrats, donna. Hillary clinton holds doubledigit leads over all of her republican rivals. In your view does this cement her as a frontrunner . She has said over and over again and i take her at her word that shes going to earn every vote out there across the country. I think she is a strong candidate. But we also have a very strong field. I have to say, Bernie Sanders is attracting a lot of support out there in terms of firsttime voters and others. Rp Martin Martin omalley Lincoln Chafee and maybe joe biden might jump into the water. But secretary clinton as a formidable lead because she is someone whos taken tough stances on Critical Issues like Immigration Reform something i hope republicans will follow her lead and Start Talking about these tough issues. The economy, criminal Justice Reform voting rights, Campaign Finance reform. So if they can follow her lead perhaps they might lead their own party. Just the beginning. Donna braldzzile, margaret hoover, thank you so much. Appreciate it. Still to come right here in newsroom, an aboutface for moneytroubled greece on a proposed bailout. But it could be too little too late for the debtladen country. Well discuss that after this break. Big day . Ah, the usual. Moved some new cars. Hauled a bunch of steel. He asked greeks to vote no in sundays referendum on the terms of a bailout deal. But earlier this morning, an official told cnn the greek government had made a dramatic turnaround and was ready to sign on to a bailout package it rejected just a few days ago. So many twists and turns. Our Business Correspondent samuel burke is here to break it down for us. This is confusing. Im confused. Help us understand this. European leaders getting one message, the people of greece a different one. Whats going on . Anybody whos watching this and thinking, how does this affect me sitting here in the United States, the United States does 3 billion of trade a day with the european union. So anything that happens to greece affects the european union, which affects us. So take a look at the big board. The dow jones is up over 100 points on this news you were just talking about, all of a sudden the greek Prime Minister said remember that offer you gave me a few days ago and i rejected . Now with all this news, it looks like ill take it. But the problem with the greeks they always come with caveats. Who knows if theyre going to take it . Yes, markets are up here in the United States and around the world. Every single stock market ive been looking at is way up. But who knows if europe will take it at this point . Is it is not time to breathe a sigh of relief yet. Certainly an ongoing saga. Who will blink first . Greece isnt the only country facing a huge debt crisis. Puerto rico is looking at defaulting. What can be done there . Whats happening . When you hear big lending big spending and harsh austerity, you think of the mediterranean. But thats whats happening in the caribbean, in our own backyard. Puerto rico is a commonwealth of the United States no they dont pay taxes but they hold u. S. Passports. So they have 73 billion in debt. How did they get here . In 2004 they had a real estate crash, long before the one we had here in mainland america. In 2006 they lost a major u. S. Tax break for factories there. And then they have triple taxfree bonds. What the heck is that . If you buy bonds in puerto rico you dont have to pay local, state or federal taxes. So a lot of people have been pouring money into puerto rico which is making their debt go up. But investors say the United States has way more exposure to puerto rico than they do to greece. So a lot of people with bond funds have to be very, very careful. We have to keep our eye on it though we are getting word theres optimism for their negotiations with creditors. And the withouthite house said it wasnt going to bail them out . Thats right. Every person with whom i have spoken has said theres no way the United States is bailing out puerto rico. So unlike the germans who have been sending their tax money, their hardearned money to greece we dont have to worry about that, according to these economists at least for now. Thank you for breaking this down for us. We appreciate it. Still to come right here in the newsroom, a historic day for the u. S. And cuba the two countries renewing its diplomatic ties. Thank you so much for being here with me on this wednesday. Lets head over to wolf blitzer in d. C. Where the president is just minutes away from a press conference on the u. S. And cuba renewing diplomatic ties. Hello. Im wolf blitzer reporting live from washington. Wed like to welcome our viewers in the United States and around the world. This is cnns special live coverage of major news from the white house. Any moment now, president obama will announce an Historic Development in u. S. Relations with cuba. Youre looking at live picture, the rose garden at the white house. Were expecting to hear that formal diplomatic ties at the highest ambassadorial level are being restored. Each country will open an embassy in the others capital. A symbol on the ongoing thaw between the two countries after decades of bitterly cold relations. Weve seen the u. S. Loosen serious travel restrictions to cuba and to permit some new Economic Activity between the two countries. Cuba has represented one of the last vestiges of the cold war. Normal relations with the island nation less than 100 miles from the United States unheard of for a lot of americans or cubans born after 1961. Washington considered fidel castro a state sponsor of terror until a month ago when cuba was removed from the u. S. State departments list of sponsor of terrors. Lets look at the historic impact of what is about to happen the next steps that will take place. Our jim acosta is over at the white house. Here with us in washington jim sciutto, our Global Affairs correspondent, elise labott our own man in havana patrick oppmann, and Alina Machado is in miami. Lets go to the white house first. Jim acosta set the scene for us. Reporter we know this is one of the top Foreign Policy priorities for this president since he was reelected back in 2012. It was negotiated in secret by one of his Top National Security advisers ben rhodes. And then the plan was hatched last december when president obama and cuban president raul castro announced to the world they are reestablishing diplomatic relations. Thats going to culminate in this announcement well be hearing in just a few moments. Here in the rose garden president obama announcing that the u. S. And cuba are reopening their embassies, located of course in washington and havana. Located in their existing offices of the u. S. Special interest section in havana and the cuban interest section here in washington. The cubans as a matter of fact recently installed a flagpole that theyll be raising the cuban flag at. And we understand theres no timetable set for when the u. S. Embassy will open up in cuba although we expect it to happen this month. The cubans are saying their embassy will open up on july 20th. As for who will be the ambassador weve been told by Senior Administration officials that the existing current interest sections chief who is in havana right now will likely be the ambassador for the time being, the acting ambassador for the time being because
@type":"Organization
archive.org
@type":"ImageObject
800
600
//ia801202.us.archive.org/34/items/CNNW_20150701_140000_CNN_Newsroom_With_Carol_Costello/CNNW_20150701_140000_CNN_Newsroom_With_Carol_Costello.thumbs/CNNW_20150701_140000_CNN_Newsroom_With_Carol_Costello_000001.jpg
@type":"Organization
