The District Attorney saying at the conclusion of the investigation, its his intention to file charges. Dogs continue to pick up the scent in the area where we are now. As you know yesterday when we were out here, they picked up a possible location where these two had been bedding down for a period of time came across several wrappers as well as a boot footprint. In terms of those wrappers when i was speaking to a Law Enforcement source out here this morning, he was saying theres a possibility those wrappers blew in from another location. Tests are going to have to be run to find out if what they did find is linked to these two men. For the people who live in this area it has been very worrisome. Theyre very tired and want it all to end. I feel like im going crazy being indoors. I feel like a prisoner in my own home. Ive got all the doors looked i closed the windows. I image things. Thanks for being here. We appreciate it. As a prison warden is Joyce Mitchell your Worst Nightmare . Well unfortunately things like that happen in prisons. They dont happen as often as one might think. But when situations like this come up it really brings awareness of what can happen. When prison workers are hired, are they vetted in any way . Are they given some sort of psychological test . No psychological test. I dont think its warranted, because theres a pretty thorough process. They go through a Panel Interview thats quite intensive. They go through a complete criminal background check, investigation. They do credit checks to make sure their funds are that their credit so theyre not susceptible to corruption or bribes. There was a complaint about mitchell getting too close to david sweat. In fact he was removed from the tailor shop where mitchell worked. Mitchell was cleared of the allegations. What kind of investigation goes down when a prison employee is accused of getting too close to an inmate . Well i mean theres a lot of interviews that go on including the employee the suspect. Quite often we in prisons can suspect somebody of participating or getting too close with an inmate. But often the problem is proving it. You cant terminate an employee or discipline an employee unless you have real proof that it happened. They did take actions from what i see by removing one of the inmates from the tailor shop. They did. They removed david swaetd. The interesting thing is that Joyce Mitchell said the other inmate matt made her feel special. Do you think the two inmates planned to, i dont know romance her in order to plan this complicated escape . Oh i have no doubt that they manipulated the lady. You know ive seen that over and over where inmates where see an employee and theyre around them a lot and all of a sudden they start telling them how nice they are. And theyre one of the best correctional workers within the fa siltdcility and theyre beautiful and they go on and on. And they earn the Staff Members confidence. Its mind blowing considering what these men were convicted of doing, though. So would other prison workers notice her talking to them . Wouldnt someone send up a red alert alert . I know someone did, but this has to go on for a long time to establish a relationship to the point where mitchell smuggled them hacksaw blades. Well you know thats exactly what happened. And thats why the initial investigation took place. Some staff member did report a suspicious activity. Its one thing to note that in prisons, theres constant training on code of conduct. Theres constant training on people taking staff taking care of each other. If you see suspicious activities report it. And in this particular case thats what happened. Did they through that access communicate with people who police are all over and speaking to the determine what were their plans, where are they going, where have they been. That could occur. I dont think shes in a good position but in a superior position. Prosecutors and Law Enforcement are relying upon the information that she provide. To the extent shes in a lot of trouble and she really is that could be mitigated or lessened depending on the extent of her cooperation. She supplied these guys with hacksaw blades thats bad. Its 100 bad. In my other life i represent correction officers in institutions. Shes not a correction officer, but there are strict rules against undue familiarity. Correction officers or even civilians who work there otherwise getting into relationships or having too Close Relationships with inmates. And its for this reason, it could turn to instances where you become as a rulevulnerable. Was she an accessory . Did she help and to what degree . It has to happen over a long period of time. It was a very convoluted man. And she had to figure out a way to smuggle these items to these inmates. They had to figure out a way to smuggle them and hide them. Different prisons have different Security Codes. When youre dealing with a Security Code as we have here where its heightened max security you would certainly think that movements attract whether it be civilians or inmates. Even though youre a civilian when you want access to certain things its recorded. There are surveillance cameras in jail. Your movements for the most part are scene. You have to document what you do. I think that investigators will be going back and tracking her movements to determine where she was, when she was there and other what period of time they accessed the cell phone. Theyll be looking at who she contacted or who they contacted on her phone so they could further plan this escape. I want to go back to the scene for just a second. Jason, i know you dont know anything about this because youre miles away from where this man lives that i just talked about. Thomas lasalle said a neighbor saw these two men jump over her parents back fence and take off into the woods. Theres increased personnel where he lives. Just tell me how often police hear about reports like and how often they investigate and it turns out to be nothing. Reporter couple things. Its several miles from where we are. Ive not seen an up tick from our vantage point. The public is doing its job. Law enforcement has repeatedly said theyre asking the public to be vigilant, to be on the lookout for anything at all that might be suspicious. The public has to be the eyes and ears on the ground. Theyre following um on inging up on hundreds of leads. Hundreds more across the state and nationally. They have to follow up on every lead as if that might be the lead that eventually takes them where they need to go. So we are going to hear throughout this entire ordeal as weve heard throughout the past few days of possible leads. You remember we were not too far from him about a possible tip. Were hearing about a possible tip, into the wooded area where perhaps these two inmated bedded down for a for a period of time. We have to wait follow up with Law Enforcement and wait to see what they tell us. I can tell you from our point of view there is a perimeter thats set up off of 374. They are narrowing in on that perimeter there. Whether it end up leading to these two men we dont know at this point. But the public i can just say its doing its job.
