Now investigators are trying to figure out if the brother of a well known cleric may have been part of a larger terror plot. Were also learning that a second suspect has been arrested and is set to appear in federal court later today. Whats unclear this morning why authorities decided to zero in on the men when they did. Lets bring in Deborah Feyerick and also a National Security analyst. Im curious about this second suspect, deb, who will appear in court later today. His name is david wright. What do we know about him . It appears he was in touch with the main suspect. He was the one that lunged at the Police Officer. They may have met online. This is a classic example of a lone wolf attack. Individuals radicalized by reading isis readings and rantings and other extremist propaganda. We were told yesterday by the head of the fbi in boston that the threat is now contained. We do know that david wright the second person involved in this apparently will be in court later today. Lets go back to this first suspect. I want to address this to julia. You serve on a task force investigating such things. How did he come to attention of the authorities . Basically, look all joint Terrorism Task forces are taking a broad view of potential suspects so they are looking at intelligence. There may be a couple hundred people that are being surveyed at any given time. I can tell you as the fbi has made clear, very few get 24 7 surveillance. There was more information coming in that triggered both the Boston Police and fbi to not only have 24 7 surveillance but approach him in open yesterday morning. Most interrogations occur at someones home or office because you want a confined space. There are aspects to this case that make you believe, that make me believe, that there was something that triggered this that they were worried about something happening relatively soon. We know he was posting some kind of threats on social media on his Facebook Page right, deborah. The type of knife that he was carrying intrigues me and it intrigues tom fuentes to be honest with you. I want to show our viewers a picture of this knife. A huge knife. It seems to be the exact kind of knife that isis guy used to behead hostages. What does that say . What that says is clearly nobody walks around boston carrying that kind of knife. What police are saying is that the level of alarm had increased significantly. Significantly enough so that authorities really felt they had to approach him. There was no arrest warrant. There wasnt even an intention to arrest him. The response how he reacted clearly showed he was on edge because the officers didnt even have their guns drawn when they walked up to him. The 24 7 surveillance was relatively new. It had just started over the last couple of days. He was on their radar earlier but now theyre looking to sort of track it back. They really felt that now was the time that they had to go up and question him and we do know that they were looking at the possibility that he was going to attack a Police Officer. The fact he was going to attack a Police Officer with that kind of knife and not with a gun paints a different picture. You know, his brother thesaid he meant no ill intent. They do have Surveillance Video because it took place near a cvs parking lot. Police are going to show it to members from muslim and black communities. Why are they doing that . Its a great idea. Look its a high tense time. If the allegations are true it shows radicalization was taking place and the Police Department is reaching out to the community saying look this is what weve got. We dont want there to be mystery or suspicions or counter theories about what happened in that parking lot. If there is Video Evidence that the guns were down by the Police Officers and that he charged with a knife, thats at least going to put some of these rumors to rest. Now, the brother who is a well known muslim cleric here you know i just have to say that people dont know what their brothers or children are often doing. I dont think his narrative makes much sense right now. I think we just have to look at the video or let the Community Look at the video and determine what in fact happened and one of the good things is a lot of stuff will unfold in open court in just a few hours as they bring charges against the co coconspirator. David wright appearing in court around 3 00 p. M. Eastern. Thank you to both of you. I appreciate it. The fight against isis overseas rages on. According to u. S. Deputy secretary of state anthony blinken, thousands islamic fighters have been killed since the start of the coalition campaign. In an interview with a french Radio Station tuesday, blinken said we recorded an enormous loss for isis. More than 10,000 since this campaign started. And this will eventually have an effect. Hes saying 10,000 terrorists have been killed since the Campaign Began nine months ago overseas. With me to talk about this is republican congressman mike turner from ohio. Hes a Senior Member of the House Armed Services committee. Welcome, sir. Thank you. Thank you for having me. Thanks for being here. I would like to start with that death count. Our war correspondents wonder about the accuracy of that number. Have 10,000 isis terrorists been killed . It certainly is possible. This is an ongoing campaign. Its the wrong metrics. That doesnt show whether or not we have success. The metric we should look at is territory that isis controls whether they pose a threat to the United States and thats an ongoing threat that were seeing unfolding throughout our country, their ability to export terrorism exports which we see in yemen and libya. We need a strategy to defeat them and not just numbers. And i think many military people would agree with what you said. Last time america kept count of the dead was vietnam. The numbers were staggering. I think hundreds of thousands were killed. We lost the war in vietnam. Is there a danger in keeping such a tally. I think so if you look at it as whether or not you have success. As we see in territorial areas, isis is gaining ground. Their use of social media puts at risk citizens across our country and military bases. If you look at whats happening in libya and yemen, we see this is a threat thats growing. The president when he announced his strategy for iraq in cairo says he had three goals. Were not doing this as its a growing threat and they are growing in strength on their hold in the area. One of the new things coming out this morning is isis controls the city of ramadi in iraq and they also control this dam that supplies water to the residents there and cut off the water supply for residents so one weapon theyre going to use now is thirst. How should the United States react to this . How do we help the iraqis regain control of ramadi . The president needs to strengthen his efforts here. We should certainly be looking to how . The department of defense is looking at this in just the limited scope the administration has given of an air war. That gives you numbers that youre referring to today of the number killed. It doesnt really give you what we need which is defeat isis which is his goal. What besides air strikes do we need . Give me specifics. Do you need more boots on the ground . Do you need more air strikes . Do you need to send more weaponry to iraq . What do we need . I think we need to do some of all of that. I think certainly the issue is support iraq and support those who are in the fight and make certain that we hold the territory. I think the president has taken this almost where he discounted capabilities of isis and its threat. This needs a greater focus for our military. I would turn to the department of defense and say we need to strengthen this. What elements and components do you need to make certain we achieve this and defeat isis. If you discount capabilities and the threat you have the situation we had today where you lose territory but we taut the number of dead. You say we need more american boots on the ground is that what youre saying . Im not calling for american boots on the ground. I think what we need to do is look to the department of defense and our military experts and say what do we need to defeat this . I think were not defeating it because the president is discounting the threat and capabilities. We look to isis gaining territory and i want to go back to that for just a second. How do you think the president characterizes isis . We heard it repeatedly. Hes talked about the jv team and other issues where he said well defeat them but hes not committed resources to them. He doesnt see it as a major threat to the United States. Even now . It would include making certain they have no ability to conduct operations that threaten the United States and we see that they do. All right. Im just trying to figure out along with the rest of america how to stop it. That comes from the president and president focusing on the fact that this is major threat to our country and nation. I dont think he sees it that way. Congressman mike turner thank you for your insight. I appreciate it. Still to come in the newsroom, inside the mind of a mass murderer. I saw that people were getting up in the back corner so i shot in that direction. Did drugs make james holmes commit mass murder . Investigators say a driver lost a race against an amtrak train. Put the fish in the cooler a train slice as car in half and it was all caught on tape. Look at this. This is Surveillance Video from a nearby bar showing this amtrak train speeding right toward that car. The driver apparently tried to beat the train across the tracks. He did not make it. Rene marsh joins us to tell us more. Its really amazing to hear that the impact flippedsplit this car in two and all three people survived. The 21yearold driver and a pregnant woman who was in the back seat and you can look from the images there it looks like the back half of the car was separated from the vehicle. Were told by our jacksonville affiliate that all three of them are recovering in the hospital. No one on the train injured. As you pointed out and you can see in the video there, it looks as if the driver was trying to beat that train and that is a terrible idea. The majority of fatalities do happen at crossings like these. So much so that the feds actually launched a campaign to aware people and let people know just how dangerous it is trying to do Something Like that if thats indeed what happened here. Of course an investigation is under way to try to figure out were crossing signals working and were lights working and arms working because we know from Jacksonville Sheriffs Office there were lights and there is an arm at that crossing. We dont know if it was working properly. Im just horrified that the driver knowing he had a pregnant passenger in the back seat we dont know for sure. Thats disgusting. Rene marsh, thanks so much. I appreciate it. For the first time jurors in the james holmes trial are hearing about the night of the shooting from the gunman himself and the insight is chilling. In this video played in court, holmes described being on autopilot unable to remember most of what went down inside that colorado theater. As for his victims, holmes says they were single valued units adding up to a tally that would increase his selfworth. Ana cabrera has been cover the trial for us. We have a weird desire to know why and horribly its been enlightening. Reporter a glimpse into the mind of james holmes. He says he wasnt anxious. He wasnt nervous as he arrived the night of the shooting. He says he was prepared. He had meticulously planned for mass murder. He tells the psychiatrist that he looked around briefly and saw the theater was packed and just before the movie started, he leaves through the emergency exit near the front of the theater by the screen and keeps the door cracked just a tiny bit so its propped open as he gears up at his vehicle putting on body armor and grabbing his weapons. Ar15, a shotgun, a handgun, before he reenters the theater and listen as he describes the shooting through his perspective. I just went through the front and sat down in one of the chairs and then pulled out my phone to make it look like i had a phone call and then went out the exit. Reporter holmes says he doesnt remember hearing the gun shots. His music was full blast. He doesnt even remember hearing that electronic music he programmed. He just blocked everything out. Holmes also told the doctor as he was planning this attack he knew what he was doing was legally wrong but he had no fear of consequences. That could become a crucial statement as we know this is an insanity case that holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Carol . The other strange thing to come out, holmes after the shooting was over and he was outside before Police Arrested him, he actually called a Mental Health crisis hotline . Reporter that actually happened just before the shooting as he was at his car gearing up to go back inside and open fire. He called his Mental Health hotline at the university of colorado where he had been seeing a psychiatrist and said he never called the hotline number before but perhaps, he says there was something inside of him that might have wanted a chance to turn back to not followthrough. Ultimately what happened was he left it on for nine seconds. He didnt even hear a ring. Nobody answered. He hung up. Now, when asked if somebody had answered and tried to stop you, what would you have done . Ultimately holmes says he probably still would have followed through on this mission to kill carol. Awful. Ana cabrera, thank you. As you heard ana say, holmes is pleading not guilty by reason of legal insanity but an antidepressant might be key in his defense. Homes says he was prescribed a drug before the shooting and he said that drug gave him zero fear about dying or the consequences of killing people. Holmes even says that if he had not been on that medication he might not have attacked the theater. Lets talk about that with our doctor. What is sertraline and what side effects does it have . Its an antidepressant and treats obsessive compulsive disorders but primarily depression trying to make bothersome thoughts go away. In some ways there is a point to be made as he is trying to make or the defense that perhaps there was no fear and there was no anxiety that may have stopped him as it may have stopped someone else. Sometimes antidepressants make you a straight line. You dont feel anything. You dont feel sadness or happiness. You feel like youre there. Its a mood stabilizer. It does in many cases elevate your mood and it also helps you with your anxiety. It treats both anxiety and depression some of the antidepressants. So in this particular case i dont know whether it was the medication itself. Its hard to say. What we see with a lot of these shooters is they go into this mode if you will of just having flat zero affect almost like disassociation. When you think about it its a defense mechanism, a coping mechanism for you to either deal with something thats horrific if you are the victim or if you are carrying out something that is horrific to almost leave your own body leave your mind almost become a robot. Almost from the outside watching yourself commit some sort of atrocious act or acts. I dont know what to make of how he described how he carried out this crime. He said he got into his car. Windows were tinted so no one would see him change into the costume and planned out to sit in the front row and keep the emergency door open and thought of his victims as units and more people he killed the better somehow it would make him . Exactly. The more people he killed the more selfesteem he would have the more worth it would give him. He had to look at those people as not being human. Only later on did he see them as victims being in the courtroom as being human beings. This speaks to whats going on here. Heres an individual who clearly is depressed or was depressed. Who clearly was schizophrenic. There may have been
