Staggering numbers, President Trump has said that he has told aides to slow down testing. In case you missed it, here is the president first on saturday night. Here is the bad part. When you do testing to that extent, youre going to find more people, youre going to find more cases. So i said to my people, slow the testing down, please. And while the president and advisers were quick to say that he was only kidding when he asked officials to slow down testing, this is now how the president has just answered a very direct question on this just today. Did you ask to slow it down . If it did slow down, frankly i think were way ahead of ourselves if you want to know the truth. Weve done too good of job. So no joking there. Definitely not in denial or not a denial of what he said about slowing down testing. So lets go to kaitlan collins. And what are you hearing about this behind the scenes from your sources . Reporter well, brooke, this is something you see where the president makes a remark, often aides say hes only kidding about it and the president undercuts them by not following up and saying i was just kidding. Just a few hours ago at the white house he paused and said even if they did slow down testing, it wouldnt be a big deal because of how ramped up it is in the United States. Listen to how two of the top aides yesterday when asked about whether the president was being serious when he made that remark. For a second wave in the fall you prepare for what can possibly happen. Im not saying it is going to happen. But of course you prepare. We know how to deal with this stuff now. It is come a long way since last winter. And there is no second wave coming. So theyre saying they dont believe a second wave is coming, talking about the preparations. Peter navarro said the president was being tongue and cheek when he made that remark. That is not even something the president himself said today. And brooke, the question, as you know, because testing is such a Critical Response and Health Experts only say it is more of that Going Forward. And it was one of the biggest issues that the administration had to deal with as this was happening. They had the serious delayed rollout of testing because tests were contaminated because of sloppy Lab Practices at the cdc. So it is a very important topic. The administration has touted time and time again and even the Vice President was pressed on this by governors during a call today on what the president meant when he said that. Ive got a doctor waiting in the wings. Well talk about the science on all of this. Kaitlan, thank you. Lets go to one of the states seeing record levels of new infections. Florida. Florida is one of the ten states seeing the highest sevenday average of new cases since the start of the pandemic and today the state crosses the grim milestone of 100,000 total infections. Rosa flores is live in miami. And what is going on in florida . Reporter you know, in the last half hour, brooke, the mayor of the city of miami announcing that there will be a mandate Effective Immediately for everyone in the city of miami who is out in public to wear a mask or a face covering. The mayor Francis Suarez very concern concerned saying it is due to the increase in the number of hospitals and on ventilators and at icu and he mentioned there are certain zip codes that are of most concern including Little Havana in the zip codes he said the city of miami will hand out masks to anyone out in public that doesnt have one. Again, this is a big step for a local mayor to say that face masks will be required in the city of miami. Of course, we know that mayor excuse me Governor Ron Desantis has not issued an order statewide despite the uptick in cases. Earlier today our very own poppy harlow interviewed mayor suarez and asked how he felt about moving forward given the uptick in cases and asked if he would support President Trump if he wanted to have a big rally for example here in the city of miami and here is what he said. Take a listen. Were not opening large venues. Where you could have any sort of large congregation of people. Whether it is a sporting event or a rally. So no, those things are not open in the city and wont be open after today, which is worse than last monday was. Reporter now according to the Governor Desantis, the up tick in cases is due to Community Spread in the younger generations, young people not social distancing, not Wearing Masks, according to the governor, he plans to publish psas and to send inspectors from the state to businesses to make sure theyre following the rules. But here is what he is not doing. He is not shutting down the economy. He is not requiring masks to be worn statewide. And as we mentioned earlier, local leaders like the mayor in miami taking action on their own requiring masks here in miami. Brooke. Let me get the doctor on this. Rosa in miami, thank you. And joining me now dr. Ali khan from the university of Nebraska Medical Center and also former director of the office of Public Health preparedness and response at the cdc. So nice to talk to you, dr. Khan. And first lets go back to the president s comments and his suggestion from over the weekend that it would be okay to cut back on testing. Your thoughts on that. So thank you, brooke. So, one, of course not. How do you manage an outbreak without testing people and still have this tragic case of 120,000 people who have died from this outbreak. So not testing isnt the solution. But the other part of the comment that you just discussed is decreasing testing and that is actually supported by data. So weve gone from less than 100 cases march 1st to 100 tests per day to half a million tests per day, right now. So we made a large increase in tests and that will continue to increase. But testing and number of testing is so january 2020. Who cares when we have enough tests. The real issue is are we testing and tracing and doing something with the tests to get cases down in our community. Well, what about on top of that . There is discussion about is there a second wave will there be all wave lets or another metaphor over the weekend in the times was this prominent doctor saying it is like a massive forest fire. Any time there is wood, it will continue to burn. And you heard larry kudlow say there is not going to be a second wave. What are facts . So, the facts are we have never figured out the first wave. So i like the forest fire analogy. I use the house on fire analogy. Before worrying about who house will burn down, can we take care of the house burning down right now. So true. So our response has been stalled for four to six weeks. Weve had a stalled response and because we failed to test and trace, because we failed to make sure that everybody wore masks and wash their hands and social distance, for the last couple of days have seen an increase in cases back up from 22,000 per day, which is enormous, up to 30,000 per day. You mentioned so lets talk about florida. And were seeing more and more people in their 20s and 30s testing positive, right. So when this whole story broke and we covered it, no one thought that the younger folks could get as sick as they are and down in florida the Governor Desantis has been noting that those under the age of 40 are much less likely to be hospitalized, less likely to die. What do you make of this trend of younger people testing positive for covid . So, this whole discussion is really a symptom of our greatest Public Health failure in history. Lets go to younger people. Hes spot on. Younger people are less likely to get sick and die and in my case every death counts. And they go visit their grandparents and with Underlying Health conditions so they could still spread disease to people who are at high risk. And the final point is we need to be very careful about blaming people for getting infected because of the government didnt protect them from getting infected. If you take this to the conclusion, we should blame the eldery and for hispanics getting infected in meat packing plants. So lets make sure that we realize this is a responsibility on the part of government to test and trace, get cases down in the community, and on our individual part, everybody should wear a mask when they are out in public, everybody should wash their hands and social distance. Dr. Khan, what about sports. You are advising Major League Baseball and they are reporting that all mlb Training Camp in florida, arizona, where theyve seen an uptick, they will close after positive tests. I know that players and owners are still negotiating how and when to play the season. But what should we expect . Do you think they should play period . Should it be start stop depending on who gets sick. From a medical perspective, what do you think. Before i go to the medical perspective, it is a example from the political and Economic Perspective may be longer so it is an economic imperative as far as im concerned. Not surprised. You have cases within the community, the increasing number of cases within the community more likely when people come together, theyre going to get infected. So, yes, i could talk about baseball ow by setting where you put more people together, whether it is a church, a rally, whether it is a music festival, people are going to get infected. So again, drop the cases. People will be safer to play. And if you are going to put people together, then you need to think about every layer you could put on to reduce that risk. Dr. Ali khan, thank you so much for all of that. Last word, brooke. Mask on. Got mine. Right here. There you go. Way to go. Walking the walk, doc. I appreciate it. Thank you so much. Always a pleasure, brooke. Thank you. Lets move on. A sickening site at the talladega and now there is a investigation and we have the latest there. And a trump adviser said the president is, and i quote, very upset about his rally in tulsa on saturday and the campaign is blaming one person in particular for the disappointing lackluster turnout. Right now the rain delayed nascar race at the Talladega Superspeedway is under way with the excitement of getting back to the track. Now overshadowed by the disgusting display of hatred overnight. A noose was found hanging in Bubba Wallaces garage. He is the only black driver in the nascar top circuit. He has responded on twitter writing this will not break me. I will not give in, nor will i back down. Nascar is investigating the incident and expressed outrage in a statement saying officials will do everything they can to identify the person or persons responsible and eliminate them from the sport. Nascars president reinforcing that saying that person will be banned for life. Bubba wallace was recently thrust into the spotlight as an active voice in the black lives Matter Movement and led the successful push to have Confederate Flags banned at all nascar races. And still as fans arrived at track on sunday, you see this. They saw this Confederate Flag with a defund nascar banner flying over the raceway. Along with confederate memorabilia sold just across the street. And just moments ago, before the start of the race, an incredible show of support from nascar drivers and pit crew members as they pushed wallaces car down the pitted by a large procession of people. So lets start there. Dianne gallagher is with me live from the speedway there in alabama. And tell me more about that show of solidarity that we just saw. Reporter really emotional prerace activities. If you could hear the cars starting up behind me at the race track right now. They walked out on the grid, the other drivers pushing the number 43 car of Bubba Wallace to the front of that grid. As what was the entire garage, all of the team members, walked behind them in solidarity, coming up to the top there to show the istandwith bubba. They painted here on the infield of the track. Bubba wallace got out of his car and became emotional, leaning over in the window. Richard petty that owns the iconic flub 43 came over and put his hands on Bubba Wallaces shoulders and proceeding to hug and elbow bump the other drivers. They are masked up for distancing and covid purposes. But you could see the tears and emotion in his case. They stood around as he stood next to Richard Petty before they began the race, he took a selfie with the other Drivers Behind him. Again it is a show of solidarity that nascar has been trying to put forward ever since they announced that noose was found in the garage stall of the number 43. Now nascar said that it wasnt bubba who found it. He did not see it. It was actually a team member of his reported it to nascar. And the president steve phelps told bubba when that noose and informed the fbi who is here onsite still investigating. Here is the thing, that garage stall, its a restricted area. The people who are there are not fans. There is only 5,000 of them. This is the first event to come back to. But were talking about other people who were there. The people who credential team members, they are other people who are already allowed to be back there. So they are investigating, looking through the tape, potentially they have cameras out here. But, brooke, i want to go back to the tweet that Bubba Wallace sent out showing the Drivers Behind him, the selfie showing that solidarity. He wrote together on this and that is what hes trying to push forward for the last few weeks as he found his voice with that black lives matter car that also had courage and unity on there. Getting the video with his fellow drivers to talk about what is going on right now, to say the names of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor and george floyd. To get nascar that has had a difficult pacht and st and up t present and try to create change within this sport. He has to do with it fellow drivers and team members alongside him. He cant do it himself. That is what they trying to show today. It took this ugly thing to really bring this light. Dianne gallagher, thank you. I want to stay on this. Brad doughtery is me with from racing and a five time nba allstar and cohost of sirius xm nascar on mondays. And brad, well get to bubbas tweet and the show of solidarity. But when you heard there was a noose hanging in his garage, your first thought was what . It is a restricted area. So people are not wondering through there aimlessly. That said that is someone within the sport, on the inside of the sport reacting this way. And at first it did shock me and it bothered me and i looked at this and i said to myself, were going to get a chance to show people that there is this underbelly that is there in our society that a lot of my caucasian friends dont understand because theyve never dealt with this. As weve had all of the conversations over the past month and a half about racism and intolerance and being insensitive, people have asked me daily, my friends that i grew up, my friends, what does this mean . Because theyve never dealt with it. What do you tell them . Well they get to see this. Now they see this and the little subtle things that happen throughout my life or the obvious things that happen in my life and i try to explain but they dont get to experience that. So the noose is another example of that and they get to see this under these circumstances, brooke, and now they get to say this is disgusting and it is terrible. Who could do Something Like this . And then get a chance to look at mirror and say what is my you and i im listening so carefully and we were talking a week before last when the news broke that nascar was banning the Confederate Flag and you were i remember, you were genuinely applauding nascar, saying this is an opportunity really for them to make good and you saw the statement i read it a second ago this noose. Nascar came down hard banning this person whoever it may be for life. What else, brad . What other actions do you think nascar needs to take to really send a message . Yeah, i think its nascar has taken a tremendous step in the right direction. And they need to continue to march forward very open and very supportive and very progressive in their thinking. The thing that we all have to do, though, brooke, we have to create more dialogue. There is a lot of people that are just kind of talking among themselves and trying to come up with these ideas of how to approach and how to do this. We need concrete solutions. That all starts with dialogue. And im asking people to go to a website, which is pg. Com take on the race to offer Educational Resources to give us opportunities to take action and create solutions through communication. And that is what i want to do with nascar, continue to have the communication. Which in this country we have done a very poor job of because of the political correctness. We need to talk about this. We need to have these conversations with our brothers and sisters and go beyond the sympathy. No one wants sympathy. But we need empathy and we need people to understand. And the only way to do that is if you hear my story and i hear your story and we come to some Common Ground and respect one another and go forward. Well, brad, to me, what really and you heard our correspondent talk about how Bubba Wallace was emotional. When you see all of the drivers and the pit crew out on the track, walking behind him and his car. Because i was thinking before the segment, a huge point is that hes the only black top driver. So we need to talk about allyship and what the other white drivers could do to show solidarity. Today was a great start. What else can the drivers do that dont share the same skin color as bubba . Yeah, continue to educate themselves. We really dont need anyone else doing commercials and speaking up and doing all of these things that they dont understand. So i think that the trueness of it for everyone, is we all need to educate ourselves and try to understand where each other is coming from. I love the symbolism of the drivers, i love all of this. Because this is something we wouldnt have seen a decade ago in nascar. This is something we wont have seen a decade ago in a lot of our different facets of our life. So that is all fine and good. But we have to take the political pieces out of this. And we have to get people to sit down and talk and come up with solutions in our africanamerican communities. We have to come up with solutions with our caucasian brothers and sisters who look at us and some people of the caucasian per swags, it is not their fault. They are trying to do the best they could do and this is not a a weightbaring topic or subject for them. They need to understand if they dont educate themselves their perpetuating the problem. That is the direction we need to go. Educate and then show up. Show up for our brothers and sisters. Brad doughtery, you are the best. Thank you very much. Good to have you back. Thanks, brooke. Right now people are gathering to honor and remember the life of rayshard brooks, a public viewing is taking place at the Atlanta Church are dr. King once preached. Brooks died over a week ago after a Police Officer shot and killed him in the wendys parking lot and that officer Garrett Rolfe faces 11 charges including felony murder. The funeral will be tomorrow for friends and family. But today the public is getting a chance to pay their respects and we have ryan young live in atlanta for us. And ryan, i know youve got some guests next to you. Tell us why people are coming out to honor him . Reporter well, first things first, brooke. You know how many people have to this area with dr. King and Coretta Scott king. So many identify the Civil Rights Movement with this area. And ray shard brooks body arrived and the family arriving 35 minutes ago. And people in this community are hoping for a bit more peace this week. I can report that there have been less sickouts from the Atlanta Police department and a source telling us. But you have to talk about moving forward. Have two guests with us. Dante, youve lived in the city for quite sometime. When you saw the pain from last week, how do you think moving forward this city can make a change . I think we have to start by adjusting the pain. Were humans and we got to start looking at the humanity and that is the biggest thing. Im here with my little girl. Shes 2 years old. These are the things as a father i care about. Before im a business owner, before anything, im a father, im a husband. And i just want my daughter to know that she could grow up and that her life is going to be valued just like Everything Else that we grow up with. Jarrett youve been fighting in the streets for years to bring this stuff to light. Atlanta went through a lot of pain last week. What do you think will happen now and what do you call for officials to do to make a significant change in the city . Well, i think atlanta is witnessing what the rest of the country has gone through and i think we have to recognize there is a Police Brutality problem and we need legislation to address it and i think atlanta will respond appropriately so im hopeful. One last quick question. The funeral is happening tomorrow. What do you expect . I expect to see an outpouring of hurt and pain. But love and reflection on where weve been and where were going. So i know atlanta knows how to respond in these situations and i think well respond appropriately. Reporter thank you so much and especially the little girl here. People are talking about this in the streets. When the wendys burn down they talked about the loss of jobs which is a food desert in the area and there is conversation how do we move forward as a community and not worry about buildings and worry about peoples lives. That is a continuous conversation happening in the city. There is more talk about what happens to the next two officers. But today and tomorrow is supposed to be about rayshard brooks. And funeral tomorrow. Let me ask you on a bit of news. The georgia medical examiner just released the full autopsy report. What does it say . Reporter well, it does talk about the shots to his back. So that is something that a lot of people in this community are upset about. If you talk to people who are investigators they say there could have been a turn after he fired the taser. That is the big part of the conversation honestly and people are waiting to see what the gdi says in terms of the investigation. Did the officer, should he had shot and that is a big question. You talk to Community Activists and they feel if there was empathy involved he would be allowed to run on. That is a Big Conversation still happening in the city. Ryan young in atlanta, thank you. Thanks to the two gentlemen you just interviewed as well. Here in new york city, a Police Officer has been suspended without pay after a choke hold incident caught on body cam video. [ bleep ]. Yo, tstop choking him. This struggle came after officers confronted a group taunting them in queens yesterday. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo addressed the speed of the officers suspension earlier today on cnn. There is no doubt that the political mood has changed all across this nation. And i think it is a great thing. Why didnt they say enough is enough after eric garner, i dont know. Why didnt they say enough is enough after abner lieueema and rodney king in los angeles 30 years ago, why did it take so long . I dont know. But i think the George Floyd Murder was the Tipping Point and youve se youve seen this outrage. I think it is related to covid when you go back and look and there is a feeling of unity and community that didnt exist before. Lets go to shimon prokupecz. And shimon, what do we know about this suspended officer . Reporter it is a 15year veteran. So he has quite a bit of time on the job. He was assigned to this precinct, to this area where this happened in queens in far rockaway section of queens. Hes now under investigation. Now understand investigation by the queens district attorney. And there is legislation now that you could be charged criminally. It is a crime now. Theyve banned police choke holds and the governor has signed legislation banning that and potentially making it a crime. So now the d. A. Office is looking at that. And as you said, hes been suspended, almost immediately within hours the Police Department suspended him and released the body camera video and now this investigation. Which is really interesting is some of the ways in which the other officers acted out there yesterday morning. You see an officer, while the choke hold is going on, you see another officer tapping on the back or the shoulder of the officer to tell him to back off, to indicate to stop and he did. Of course, the mayor today praising that officer saying this is what they need more of, conduct like this. As you said, this started all, a disorderly call and then a lot of taunting between the individuals toward the police. And then at some point it just escalated and we see the arrest and so that is that. So the queens d. A. Will continue to investigate it. Thank you for that update. How about this. Kwormt america is responding to the black lives Matter Movement. Folks using voices and marching. Some companies are now focused on ballot box instead of business. Well talk to one ceo making sure her employees get out and vote on election day. Five five dollar five dollar footlong piled high with veggies theyre back. Any footlong is a 5 footlong when you buy two. For a limited time. Subway. Eat fresh. November 3rd, election day. May look different for companies here in the United States as the country faces a reckoning, hundreds of companies are promising to give workers paid time off on election day. And some are even taking it steps further by helping them register to vote. Uber announced that election days around the world will be Company Holiday for employees. Best buy is going to limit store hours so workers will have a chance to vote. Restaurants like and pizza will close for the day and Mark Zuckerberg is saying his goal is to help 4 Million People vote. Nba teams including the Minnesota Timberwolves and sports leagues like the ncaa will make it a holiday and speaking of linda keselowski. Welcome. Nice to have you on. Thanks so much. Thanks for having me. Onot only are you giving you employees paid time off, youre going to help employees with early voting, absentee voting and pay for transportation to and from the polls. Tell me why. Yes. Well, so for us it is not just about giving the day after which we think is critical. But it is more about removing all of the barriers to people actually voting and having a voice. And that is in every election possible. So were going to be first enabling Voter Registration and in person and electronically for all of our employees at our facilities and looking at making sure that were moving any barriers to allow them to vote. Were going to participate in early voting day and helping with any absentee ballots for people who need it. But then even the day of, november 3rd, well be making sure that everybody has transportation to and from the polls to make sure they could vote if they want to vote, how they want to vote. And so much is pegged to or part of the catalyst is just this movement that were all living in, right. This space and time in america. And so in addition to helping folks get to the polls, blue apron pledged to expand the diversity and Inclusion Program and partnering with other organizations to ante up the efforts. So what is your goal . What will that look like . For us it is starting at home. Which is our team and our facilities. So we think that all change does start at home and we want to make sure that our employees are empowered, that they have a voice and that we make sure that we are both empowering our employees inside and enabling them to use their voice oifd and that includes voting. So the diversity and Inclusion Programs are focused on how to elevate employees through training and programs around higher People Development and the product itself, making sure that were driving diversity. And our goal is to make sure that we are internally first focusing on our Employee Base and empowering them completely and then continuing to expand that externally as well through the programs. More and more, good on you and more companies are looking to do similar things. I would be remiss to not ask you about in the midst of the covid pandemic, a lot of companies have been hurting. Weve been reporting on that for months now. Since everybody is stuck at home doing a bunch of cooking, my husband, not myself, i will out myself, but you are benefiting from that. So hows that blue apron been faring during all of this and how are you thinking longterm just as we dont know what the future looks like in terms of dining out. Right. Well, again, for us, we did see a big surge back in the beginning of april as the stayathome orders started to come into play, again, as with Everything Else our First Priority is our employees so the first thing we did was figure out to you ho take sure to keep our employees safe and focusing on getting food into more homes so we started to expand our hiring and also build on the strong sanitation and Safety Practices in our facilities to make sure that were fully prepared and keeping our employees safe. So for now that is really the balance that were working on. We want to continue to grow the business and make sure that we are focusk on our longterm strategy and just keeping employees safe in the process. So thats really what we do daytoday. And making sure people are staying at home and being safe and cooking with their spouses doing the cooking. Linda keselowski. We could teach you. Yes. I need to. I could do better. I could do better. Well have some catching up to do. Very upset, President Trump, thats a direct quote. President trump is still seething over that, shall we say, less than packed arena that hosted his return to the campaign trail this weekend, despite denials from the white house, a trump adviser tells cnn that the president is furious about the poor turnout for his rally in tulsa. Just last week, in fact, the president tweeted that almost 1 Million People requested tickets for the event. But the Tulsa Fire Department says that only about 6,000 people actually showed up. And those lackluster numbers leaving trump aides to really rethink what his rallies will look like, might look like Going Forward as we head to election day. All of this is happening as the president heads to arizona for his next big event. And arizona has seen a spike of coronavirus. Well get to the rallies in just a second. But i know you have news on some additional staffers who have tested positive for covid. Reporter yeah, thats right, brooke. The Trump Campaign confirming to us that two additional advanced staffers that were part of the Trump Campaign and were a part of that rally in tulsa on saturday night have tested positive for coronavirus. The Campaign Spokesman telling me via text that those two staffers were actually participants in the rally. They were inside the rally as it was happening. But he said they were Wearing Masks the entire time. This raises the total of trump chain staffers who tested positive for coronavirus to eight. There were six before the rally, two during, and then two Additional Secret Service agents as well. Now we have at least ten people who have tested positive that were connected to the rally in some way, shape, or form. Brooke . And so back to the sort of lackluster, you know, in terms of people showing up at the tulsa rally this weekend. I know that folks are furious at the Campaign ManagerBrad Parscale. What are you hearing about why theyre directing their ire towards him . Well, theres a lot of concern across the Trump Campaign about what exactly happened at that rally on saturday night. And part of the reason that Brad Parscale is taking a lot of the heat is because of the expectations that were set for this event. Parscale was the person who suggested tulsa to President Trump, and he also was using his data operation that he was responsible for in the 2016 campaign to kind of set the stage for exactly what to expect. They said they got over a million rsvps. Thats why they expected the big crowd. That just did not materialize. Thank you very much.
