May have less closure on what comes next. Some are arguing the special counsel advanced their case to impeach the president , others say theres still more investigating to be done no one seems to be more cautious about how to proceed than nancy pelosi. Have you discouraged your members from asking for impeachment . Never have done that. This is all an agenda that has to happen in 2019 if its going to happen. The clock is ticking. The risk is ours. Is the speaker wrong . I want to encourage her to expedite this matter, more than has been done in the past . What about the legal fallout. Sarah coin is a former federal prosecutor and former u. S. Assistant attorney for the Eastern District of new york. Good to have both of you here, if we look at this clearly, Robert Mueller clearly stated the president could be indicted after leaving office. Whats the statute of limitations on Something Like this . Its five years. Basically, he is correct that the president can be indicted after he steps down or isnt reelected. But what if he is reelected . All this conduct is from 2017. When we look at what the possibilities would be, right, if he were charged, and i think they have a list of some of them, looking at some of them, walk us through some of these because of what we heard from theres also the lying. Theres a lot of lying, the president lied on multiple occasions, people go to jail for things like that. What could happen to President Trump if it were to happen. A really useful tool, 1001, thats what Martha Stewart was prosecuted with. It carries a lot of weight, its not an easy charge to prosecute. Not only is there a lie, it has to be material, it has to matter and affected the recipient of the lie. Although mueller commented that he found him to be generally untruthful in several ways, he didnt note that in the report, he didnt suggest there was liability for that. If you read the answers given on his behalf, theyre very heavily lawyered, i would say and well defended against potential liability for a false statement. Theres been a lot made of even from some of the democrats, theyre not a consensus in the caucus. Theyve been fairly cautious even since the Mueller Report came out. When you look at whats happened where theyve gone or have not gone. Have they dropped the ball at all on their oversight . Or are they proceeding the way they need to. I think theyre proceeding the way they should. Theyre proceeding deliberately, and as they should by first looking at the report then speaking with mueller, theyve subpoenaed others theyre going to have more witnesses. I think they are proceeding the way they should. When we look at how everything is laid out. Whether its picked up yesterday. Does that change the Public Opinion at all . How many does that come into play when were looking for it to happen legally. I think what you saw yesterday is that the rule in court, there are no leading questions on direct exam. The jury needs to hear from the witness. They dont need the question to embed the fact and then have the witness say yes then the person hasnt told the story. If theyen watt the story told, and they want to get public support around that, theyre going to have to call the witnesses and explain what happened. Well be watching to see what comes next. Appreciate you joining us today. Thank you. Robert mueller was tight lipped in his responses, he didnt hold back when it came to the core issue of his investigation. Russian interference in our elections. This week his warnings were echoed by fbi director christopher ray. Did you find evidence theyll try to do this again in. Theyre doing it as we sit here, and they expect to do it during the next campaign. The russians are absolutely intent on trying to interfere with our elections through foreign influence. Is it fair to say everything weve done against russia has not deterred them enough . All the sanctions, all the talk, theyre still at it . Well, my view is until they stop they havent been deterred enough. And theyre still doing it . Yes. Despite those warnings, some republican senators blocking those attempts. Three security bills were blocked yesterday, hours after the hearing, after the clear warnings from Robert Mueller. Chuck schumer making a second attempt today. That was met with opposition. We are asking our republican colleagues to join with us in doing everything we can to stop it. This is serious stuff. What my friend, the democratic leader is asking unanimous consent to pass is partisan legislation from the Democratic House of representatives relating to american elections, its just a highly partisan bill from the same folks who spent two years hyping up a Conspiracy Theory about President Trump and russia, therefore, i object. Keep in mind the bills would require that if someone is approached by a foreign power, perhaps with information about an election, that it has to be reported. It has to go through the normal chain of events. We will be talking about that more, i want to talk to my next guest. Hes one of the researchers that informed mueller about how pervasive russian influence was in 2016. How often masked russian twitter accounts were used in major media outlets. Much to their surprise, the day muellers report was released, there was their study referenced, volume one, page 27 footnote number 1. Cue the cell phone going off. Great to have you with us, i know that was quite a day for you, but also yesterday youre now really a part of this american story, of history here, what did you think of yesterdays hearing and specifically what we heard in terms of the ongoing threat to u. S. Elections . Thank you for having me, i really appreciate you taking the time to talk to me today its been an exciting experience to be part of this, and to do work that contributes to our understanding of russian infiltration in the u. S. Political election. One of the things i was glad to see was mueller going back to russia repeatedly. Particularly on social media, and particularly as it relates to our public discourse. In terms of your research, to give folks a better sense of how it worked. You go, you click on a news story, we see some of these tweets embedded in a story. What you found is that a lot of those tweets were part of this whole russian plan . Yes, exactly. Unwittingly, i dont think the journalists who wrote these stories even realized there were russian trolls that were embedded in these news stories. What we did is, we looked for the russian troll account names and we found that about 60 of them, 71 outlets had one story, at least one story with an ira tweet in them. These are russian trolls, real human beings, writing posts as if they were pretending to be american citizens, talking about american politics in the 2016 election in particular. Theyre not american citizens, theyre russian trolls. Whats the biggest threat . In terms of our research, the realization that its difficult to identify who those russian trolls are, i think. We realize that citizens, both journalists and regular every day people, as well as politicians, its hard for us to identify when someone is a russian troll, its hard to figure out who the person is on the other side of the screen i think this is something thats going to continue to be an issue in 2019 and goingforward. The Cyber Security chief said, were not going to be caught flat footed, were ready. Were prepared for 2020. Yes or no, do you think were prepared . I think were as prepared as we can be. Its difficult to say if were fully prepared. When it comes to russian activity on our social media platforms, particularly twitter, facebook, reddit, its difficult to say if someones a russian troll or isnt. The best thing we can do is try to be as critical as possible and to think about the tweets we put into our news stories. Its great work, important work, i appreciate you taking the time to join us today. Thank you. Still to come, exclusive documents reveal hundreds of red flags were raised about family separations at the border from inside the Trump Administration. Why didnt anyone seem to listen. Joe biden on the attack against his 2020 rivals after they went after his record, hitting back now at senators cory booker and Kamala Harris. Keep in mind too, this is a few days before he faces them on the debate stage. Someone just lost their job over this doctored president ial seal. It showed up behind President Trump as you can see there, at a speech this week. Take a close look, do you notice anything off . Pharmacist recommended memory support brand. And be better protected from mayhem. Like me. Despite launching his campaign with a lets all get along mantra, cory booker is not holding back when it comes to criticism of his competitor joe biden and bidens newest plan for criminal justice reform. Im disappointed its taken joe biden years and years until he was running for president to say he made a mistake, there were things in that bill that were extraordinarily bad. Now, hes unveiled the crime bill for a guy that helped to be an architect of mass encarceration, this is an inadequate solution to what is a raging crisis in our country. Biden hitting back at booker. If you look at the mayors record in newark. The pattern and practice of misbehavior, his Police Department was stopping and frisking people mostly africanamerican men. If he wants to go back and talk about records, im happy to do that, i would rather talk about the future. All of this, of course, setting the stage, literally for an interesting second debate. Biden and booker will face off along with Kamala Harris who has pushed back on biden when it came to School Bussing in that last debate. Chief political analyst Gloria Borger joins me now, the gloves are off at this point, i think we can say, fireworks expected next wednesday. Especially based on where everyones going to be on the stage. Talk to me about what were seeing in terms of this more aggressive approach from cory booker. Is this just about criminal justice issues . Is there more to it . I think for booker, this is really about survival. Dont forget, for the fall debates, the bar is double, and so this is make or break for him. When youre in a debate. You look at whos the person i really need to take down a little bit . So i can grab his voters . One of those people clearly for cory booker is joe biden. He thinks he has a lot of issues. Biden is at 22 in the polls, booker is at 3 in the polls, this is his moment, and hes got to make it, hes got to make that moment himself, and he thinks he can do it with biden. Were seeing the former Vice President go after harris, taking swipes, sometimes by name, sometimes not we should point out. Its obvious who were talking about, including going after her medicare for all plans. You have to find 30 to 40 trillion dollars somewhere, where are you going to find it. Theyre not going to tax the middle class, because we dont need to do that. What is this, a fantasy world here . I think its interesting, he also said this on a radio show, i thought we were friends, i hope we still will be. Going on to say, that she asked him to come out to the convention, to be the guy outside of california to nominate her for the senate seat. Talking about how they worked together a lot. That she and beau biden were attorneys general that took on the banks . Whats the strategy in that . I think biden likes Kamala Harris, i think they are friends. If you remember from the last debate, i think he was a little stunned when she took him on. He didnt respond in a good way. Shes number two, and shes a close number two to him. I think what his staff is telling him, and what his debate coaches are telling him, you have to earn every vote. You cant just run as the frontrunner and say, i can beat donald trump, sure, thats part of it, you have to tell people why you can beat donald trump and how you can beat donald trump. That means you have to be able to go on the attack when youre attacked, fight back. I think theyre telling him he needs to do that. Biden doesnt like to do that, its funny about people who have been Vice President , they kind of walk in a room and expect everyones going toen sad up and say, arent you fabulous. And then you get on a stage and someone is attacking you, you go, really . Wait a minute. Hes been out of practice, so hes got to learn how to do that again. To that point too, whats your sense of, how much hes listening to that direction. As all of this preparation is happening behind the scenes, right . That first debate, theres a lot to be learned in how that went, both during and after . How much of that, well call it helpful criticism do you think hes really taking to heart . I think hes taking it to heart a lot, i think what youre seeing in all these Campaign Stops are practices, what hes doing is practicing his lines, and getting it in his head so hell be able to say it very easily on the stage. And i think hes listening to them, i wouldnt be surprised if they played him a tape of the debate and looked at how he looked, and that he did not look strong and did not look in control, thats what people want to see, because when you look at the polling among democrats, the number one issue for democrats is, choosing someone who they believe can beat donald trump. And joe biden has to prove that he can do it, he cant just say, im electable. He has to show it. We will be watching for all of that, and much more, Gloria Borger, always good to see you, thank you. Thanks, erica. Be sure to watch right along with us, the debates only on cnn, two big nights next tuesday and wednesday. Coming to you at 8 00 p. M. Live from detroit. A visual mishap during a president ial speech, and now someones fired. Take a look at the president ial seal in this photo behind President Trump. It has a two headed eagle. Thats pretty similar to the state seal of the russian federation. The eagle is clutching golf clubs, not arrows. And also there, a sickle, if you look closely. That is clearly not the official United States president ial seal, but it briefly showed up behind President Trump on tuesday. This was as he was addressing the conservative Student Group turning point usa. There was zero malicious intent here, but at least one person lost their job. Sarah westwood joins me now. Who was it that got in trouble, a student, an adult . Turning point usa is saying this was an audio visual aid who was let go. Heres what a source familiar with the events told our colleague about what they say happened. Originally the Group Planned to have its own branding on the screens that were supposed to flank President Trump on the stage here. They had to display a picture of the seal. The av aid who has been fired from the organization performed a Google Search trying to find a High Resolution image of the president ial seal. Because of the pressure of the deadline. The source says the aid selected an image that he did not realize was a parody, it had that double headed Eagle Associated with the russian state seal. That eagle was holding golf clubs. They had nothing to do with it, another source familiar tells cnn this is also the fault of the white house advance team. The advanced staffers should have provided the organization with the picture of the seal they wanted to be used or at least should approve what was put on the screen by the president. It appears that did not happen in this case. Sarah westwood, appreciate it, thank you.
