Twoman race between donald trump and me. And i think that presents a good choice to the american people. This process is a job interview. At a rally today, cruz aimed jabs not at his gop rivals but his democratic ones. We cant forget about Bernie Sanders. So now the democratic field consists of a wild with ideas that are dangerous for america and the world and Bernie Sanders. Our senior washington correspondent is that gentleman there. Jeff zeleny, he joins me now. Jeff, was it because he got 18 Million People to watch him at our debate . Whats behind this . His debate performance . I think thats a big part of it. A big audience was tuning in for what was largely a good night for ted cruz. But really whats behind these numbers is hes consolidating a lot of conservative support. You have seen ben carson slip over the last month or six weeks or so. Ted cruz is getting all of that support. Marco rubio has slipped a little as well. The decision by ted cruz to go hard after marco rubio on immigration. E we heard him mention it on stage last week in las vegas. He said amnesty. It takes marco rubio awhile to explain his immigration position. He supports overall comprehensive immigration reform. Ted cruz says he does not, although there are some nuances. Conservatives hate that. Thats one of the reasons hes rising here. Hes also been campaigning sort of under the radar for most of the year here. A lot of conservatives, a lot of faith activists and all that is coming into play now at the end of the year. At the debate when he was explaining immigration, it was a very touchy moment between him and cruz on stage. Heres the thing. Lets talk about trump and clinton. That tension is really getting worse. Listen how trump lashed out against her when he was in michigan last night. Here it is. Everything thats been involved in hillary has been losses. Even a a race to obama, she was going to beat obama. I dont know who would be worse. I dont know. How does it get worse . But she was going to beat she was favored to won and she lost. Whats been the reaction to that . I think its the first time we can safely say that word has been used as a verb on the campaign trail. The reaction is his supporters loved it. In the room, anything that he says negative about Hillary Clinton, his supporters love. Democrats and perhaps other women voters maybe independents dont love it as much. Hillary clinton is campaigning in iowa. Im told shes not going to mention it, but thats not saying her campaign is being silent about it. Lets take a look at this from her communications director. She sent out a tweet this morning sort of offering guidance. We are not responding to trump, but everyone who understands the humiliation this degrading language inflicts on all women should. Imwithher. They are definitely try iing to rally the own supporters. But i have to tell you, its probably good for both of the respective bases whenever trump takes on clinton his people love it. Whenever she responds, her people love it. Well keep an ear out this afternoon to see if she responds. I dont think she will. This is his ballpark, this sort of thing. Well see. Jeff zeleny, thank you, appreciate it. Donald trump didnt just get vulgar. His talk went to the toilet when talking about clinton in michigan today. This is what he said about her entrance to the stage. She had gone to the bathroom. I know where she went. Its disgusting. I u dont want to talk about it. Its too disgusting. We want to be very straight up. But wasnt that a weird deal . Were ready to start and they were looking. They gave her every benefit of the doubt because its abc and she practically owns abc. Lets talk to ryan williams, who was a spokesman. Hello to you. As a Republican Party member, how do you bring in the people in your party who are cheering and supporting donald trump even when he gets this low language or do you give up on him . Theres no question that Donald Trumps comments are outrageous and offensive and the majority of republicans do not support them. Hes consolidating a small sliver of the base giving them these numbers. But by and large, republicans do not support this. If we nominate donald trump, were going to lose. As governor bush has said before. Donald trump is a chaos candidate. Hes unelectable in in a general election. Hes only capable of consolidating a small portion of the base. You were quoted about Hillary Clinton and donald trump. It is a calculated effort on the democrats part to elevate trump. They want trump to be the nominee because they think they can beat him easily. Do you have proof of that . What makes you say that . I think what jeff said earlier is true. The confrontation between trump and clinton is beneficial for both parties. It helps Hillary Clinton rally support rs to get attention from the liberal supporters. And also allows trump to rally his base. Any attack by a democrat helps him, especially the president of the United States. So i think what they are doing is elevating him. They know trump would be an easy loss in the general election. Theyd love to see him become the republican nominee. Anything to rally supporters to vote in the primaries are going to help him. Why did you tell the hill if it comes down to a cruz trump race, which it might be that way, that mitt romney is going to step in . I said if it comes down to a race with trump or cruz, he may step in. Romney cares deeply about the future of the Republican Party. Hes been very critical of donald trump and cruzs efforts to shut down the government. He wants to see a conservative win this nomination. I would not be surprised if romney would step up and do what he can to help the party elect someone who is the most electable to defeat Hillary Clinton in november. Youre just saying that. You guys havent talked to each other. I have not talked to him, but governor romney has done a lot to help conservative nominees get elected. Hes endorsed in the primaries in the last cycle. What about the possibility that if trump becomes the nor l nominee the gop tries to get him to select an establishment candidate for his nominee for vice president. Who is that and how does that look to you . I dont think donald trump is going to be our nominee. E dont think were going to get to that juncture. But what donald trump has said over the course of this campaign is destructive and would hurt him if he did get the nomination. But i do not see that scenario happening. Our party is going to get behind the most electable conservative to win in november. I think we have got a lot of great candidates. He would be a good person to lead the party in november. Even if he starts winning these caucuses and primary states, you think no donald trump . The polls arent showing that, ryan. I have faith our voters are going to come together and elect the best person in november. Once the field dwindles, youre going to see a shift and consolidation behind a good candidate who can take op trump. I was just told a secret that i feel bad about the speeding ticket you just got. But were glad you made it. Thank you. Thank you. Merry christmas to you. We have news just in that involves the secret service agents. A gun, radio, flash drive, they have all been stolen. They were taken in broad daylight from the agents personal vehicle while parked in Downtown Washington, d. C. So michelle kosinski, traveling with the president in honolulu. She has the details for us. Again with the secret service. Whats going on here . Reporter i think thats what everybody says. Another one of these shall we call them unpleasantries. This was a protective division agent. So these are the people who dont wear uniforms. They generally see in Downtown Washington around the monuments and white house. They dont travel in marked cars. He was using his personal vehicle. So his job is to protect the president but apparently he had some trouble protecting his personal gear, including his gun, his badge, radio, handcuffs and a flash drive. These were all in his personal vehicle. What make this is even more remarkable is this happened while he was parked right next to secret Service Headquarters in Downtown Washington, d. C. This is a place where you constantly see the uniform Division Officers walking around. The information that we have gotten from sources indicates that one of his windows on his vehicle, which wasnt described in e detail, but one of the windows was unzup ed. So it was likely a jeep or something similar that ha that kind of access to the vehicle, but he had all this gear in a bag that was accessible when that window was unzipped. The perssuspect was able to gra that bag and take all of this out of there. That person has still not been caught. Sources tell us that the main concern here is the gun. The flash drive sounds pretty sensitive, we dont know what kind of information was on that. But we are told that it was encrypted in some way and whoever stole it would not be able to gain access to it. At least thats what our sources are telling us. But as of right now, neither the white house or the secret service has officially commented on this theft in the middle of the day right next to secret Service Headquarters. I have to tell you. Even as a civilian, were told dont leave valuables in your car. When you work for the government, if youre a secret service and on white house protection to leave those sorts of things youre supposed to secure those things. Thats part of the protocol. Reporter yeah, because secret service isnt giving us details, we dont know the specific circumstances of this incident. Did he just run into the building for a moment . Was he called away on something in a a hurry . We dont know what rules were broken here. But what we do know is that that window was able to be unzipped, as i said, and this bag could simply be grabbed out of that window. A lot of questions surrounding this. Michelle kosinski in hawaii, thank you, traveling with the president who is on vacation there. Appreciate your reporting. Government forces are carrying out an operation to take ramadi back from isis terrorists. Bombers from the Coalition Backing the operation with air power. Lets discuss with barbara starr, cnns pentagon correspondent. Barbara, you first. What are you hearing about the iraqi armys push and the role the u. S. Is playing . At this hour, some very tough fight iing ahead for iraqi forc on the ground in ramadi. They began this very surprising maneuver earlier today when they unfolded a pontoon across a portion of the river and began to make their daylight move into the center of ramadi. They have been fighting in the outer neighborhoods for some weeks, but iraqi forces moving into the center of ramadi into. The heart of where they think there might be up to 500 isis fighters well dug in. Using human shields. Bombs, all of it. Its going to be very tough fighting for the iraqis. Theres a couple issues a the hand. If they get the city center back, can they hold on to it. Isis will be tough to dig out of there on a permanent basis and youll recall seven months ago iraqi forces ran from the fight when isis first moved into ramadi in a very strong fashion with hundreds of fighters. Theres been a lot of u. S. Effort over the last seven months to get them trained up to get them ready u to make this move. But will they get ramadi back . Will they be able to hold on to. Do you believe the iraqi army that lost ramadi cannot just win it back, but can hold it at this time . Thats the real difficulty. On the plus side, the most e elite Iraqi Military division is called the golden division. These guys have been through it all including being kidnapped by militias. Their moral does not seem to be flagged. They are gung who about pushing in. The reality difficulty is what is left to hold on to . This is where isis becomes its most brutal. They have a certain kind of ied they install to houses where anybody who steps on a trip wire on the ground sets off a Chain Reaction that make the house collapse on top of them. So they could be looking to destroy as much infrastructure as possible. You talked about human shields. Reuters had a piece where it described ramadi as a geographical coffin. They are not letting humanitarian corridors out. The more civilian casualties, the more the population will see the progovernment forces marching in as agents of death. So we have to be careful about declaring victory here. Theres a long fight ahead. I want to discuss a little more about what you said. About the using of human shields they are known for laying traps and bombs as they are pushed out. Its quite a dangerous place right now for the troops and for the civilians. Thats right. One of the ways isis tries to control the population is to say you cut a deal with us or things become much worse. Youre going to be taken over by militias. In this case, theyve kept the socalled popular mobile units of iranianbacked militias on the outskirts knowing if they marched into the center of the city, they would meet with resistance not just by isis but by some of the locals who dont want this tribal city to be overtaken by what they see as proiranian forces. Its mostly a more professionalized endeavor. U. S. Special forces are very likely to be playing an on the ground role in this operation. Ive been hearing rumors and comments coming out of iraq about this for the last several weeks. Thats going to have to be the last word. Thank you both very much.
