This is what is called a flaparon but also because of the number stamped on it. It may not mean a lot for you or myself but its significant. The image of the debris here from this local newspaper, the source says it matches this particular number on a schematic of a 777. This online picture appears to be from a boeing maintenance manual. Family members of the missing passengers are at least at this point in time after reserving judgment after so many false starts its hard to believe that we would come across from where its generally believed to be located. Again geography here. The debris was found off the coast of this Little Island called reunion island off madagascar to the east of africa. That is 2300 miles from the current search site and close to 4,000 miles from where mh370 vanished in last march of last year. Tell me now, as far as this piece of debris robin, where is it at the moment and who is looking into this . Reporter from what our sources tell us here on the island, brooke the piece of debris is still here. However, we are hearing according to the Malaysian Prime Ministers Office the piece of debris will be heading to france. Reunion is a french territory so the piece will be investigated by frances equivalent of Civil Aviation authority, the bea. The french have not confirmed that. They will be meeting that piece of debris in france to go over the i guess schematics as well as the debris itself to find out exactly if that piece came from the missing boeing 777. The person who found it was on a beach close to this main island st. Andre beach. It was found by a bunch of people who were cleaning the beach. They noticed it bobbing in the water. They pulled it up and called authorities when they realized it was indeed a piece of plane. Robyn kriel, thank you. Honestly they say they want 100 certainty, you know before they can really sort of absorb this. How are they handling this information . Reporter well brooke sadly, they are going through the same range of emotions they were going through when you and i were talking in the middle of the night in this part of the world a year ago. Uncertainty and questions about what happens if this piece of the wing is indeed from flight 370 . Still, what is the proof for these families that the plane went down and that people didnt somehow survive, that people arent still out there . It may be difficult for you and me to understand but for a lot of people including the 150 families here in china, they still because they havent seen any substantial proof that the plane crashed, they are Still Holding on to this shred of hope their loved ones might be alive. And even more heartbreaking, brooke they are not getting any information from the officials anymore, not from Malaysian Airlines not from the Chinese Government. Their Assistance Center has been shut down for months. They dont even have a hotline. They are learning about this just as we are and its really heartbreaking for these families. This component number that they spotted on this wing matches a boeing 777. The question is how do they take that number and this piece of a plane and be able to definitively say, this is mh370 . That number could be a number of things. But one of them could be just an inspectors stamp. And the inspector stamps are all registered. So we know which inspector inspected which part on which day. That can be tracked back. The other thing it could be is other manufacturers make subparts or subassemblies of that entire portion of the wing. Those, again, are also tracked and then they go into an assembly which is the entire piece and that has a part number and that part number starts with a 113 w and then 611 or something afterwards. This will tell them that it is indeed from 777. It may not tell them which serial number until they see the 113 number. Are we talking days here . Could it be that quick . Well im quite frankly, that they are shipping it back for this kind of inspection. We are not doing an accident investigation. They are doing a parts identification. Im quite surprised they are not sending a specialist out to verify it on site because you could lose important evidence on that wing. Okay. I have more for you but, nick, let me bring you in. I know that martin dolan, the head of the transport Safety Bureau in france, he said despite where this plane we believe has been found, they are not searching they are not changing the search area. Listen to this. No. Because if its confirmed to be from mh370 we know that the wreckage could easily have drifted over a period of time to that search area and all the information we have and analysis says this search area is where the missing aircraft will be found. So nick why wouldnt they shift the search area . Does that surprise you . No it actually doesnt. As mr. Dolan noted, the ocean operates in very unique but understandable ways. Particularly in the indian ocean, there are very defined currents that move east to west right around the equatorial region and they are very strong currents. Its not out of the realm of possibility that a wing of this size could actually have found its way into the surface currents and drifted those 2300 miles ending up on reunion island and certainly weve seen things like this following the japan tsunami. Its certainly possible that this is from the Malaysia Airlines flight. I think its also very important for us to understand here that theres a lot of debris out there beyond from just this wreckage. Right. If you recall a year ago, you know there were many false alarms. I think its important for us to be certain but certainly from an oceanographic perspective, it is possible. Well and staying with you on the oceanographic perspective, if you were to find a piece of a plane, arent they typically found in clusters . Im wondering if they found this one piece, how quickly, then if it is it they will begin to find other pieces of the plane as well. Thats a great question. Its hard to say with certainty but certainly as an item this large washes up it is possible that in the comes days or coming weeks you could see other remnant pieces you know that are similar in shape and size and would be noting in the same buoyancy and drifting across the ocean. Its possible but theres a lot of debris out there. So you know well have to wait and see. Uhhuh. David soucie, you said yourself youre a little surprised they are going to take this piece and take it up to the bea in france which could lose something to it. Hopefully not. And then from there at what point would they send a crew to reunion island and then you know are you looking for pieces floating . At what point do you go under water to find out how much of a plane could be in tact . Walk me through those steps. First of all, with regard to once they identify it as that part there are already searchers out there combing the beaches and helicopters out there. Its unlikely they would have sunken debris in that location because it would have sunk at the point. But the surface area search will continue and it will be a strong one right now for sure. What about looking at the edging . You said those are the barnacles, the parasitic activity from the ocean. Beyond that what could this say about fire damage and what not . I dont see any evidence of any burning at this point but thats something theel bey will be looking for is a fire before contact. Id be looking at the front leading edge of the Control Surface. If the aircraft hit an abrupt and dramatic fashion, it would have stopped the wing and collided with the back of the wing and caused Severe Damage to the front of the wing. From the pictures we have i dont see that. So it appears that the that this Control Surface was torn off of the aircraft before the actual abrupt stop landing in the water. Reporter that 6 1 2 foot piece . Thats right. It combines the aleron and flaps themselves. Reporter so it controls the landing . Yes. It extends away from the aircraft and gives pilot more control over the aircraft at takeoff and landing. We have one in front of us to give us detail of what the investigators at reunion island are working with. How would they be able to tie this specific flaperon back to the one on the plane that is missing . The data point will list the part number and serial number of the unit. But we saw from these photographs that weve seen emerge that the data plate is not there. What other identifying characteristics are there . Its potential there are other serial numbers and identifying marks in the unit itself. Weve seen that number on a part of the flaperon. Youre an expert on the boeing 777s. Theres certain things that stood out to you, isnt that right . Yes. If we can compare the photos themselves directly to the unit you can see similarities between them especially in the side section of the aircraft. But what is key to note the linkage that ties it to the airplane itself are not only not there but forcibly removed. Theres something on the other side that you were showing us a while ago. Yeah. Reporter this is only specific to boeing 777, is this mounting portion right here. Yeah. If we can compare pieces and pictures this is a picture of the right side of the unit. The actuator on the 777 is found right here in this location. Reporter what about this part michael . This emerged about a year after the flight first disappeared. Is this particularly buoyant portion of the aircraft . Thats a really good question. This part itself is made of composites. It used to be that they would be made of aluminum or a metal alloy. Its a composite material and lightweight and hollow. It has ribbing structure on the inside. In fact some sealed compartments. It would float or wouldnt sink all the way to the bottom of the ocean or any other surface. One last question. You know this aircraft. Youve studied it since you were 8 years old. What do you think, looking at the pictures and looking at this here this flaperon . I think its pretty promising that its from a 777.
