Cnns Alexander Field is in plattsburgh, new york. I understand you just spoke with her lawyer. What did that person share with you . Reporter well brooke for days she was voluntarily going to plea saying everything she knew about the escape plan and her role but shes now charged and shes taken on an attorney. He says that shes remorseful but hasnt spoken to investigators ever since he took on the case. Im on my way to a deposition. Reporter can you tell us how your client is holding up . I havent talked to her today but as of late yesterday, she was pretty distraught. Reporter elaborate on that. She had a visitor today, her husband, correct . That is correct. Reporter can you explain how that visit went . I dont know. I dont know. I dont know. All i know is he said hes standing by her. I dont know anything more about their conversation than that. Reporter she will be transferred to another jail . Thats what i was told by the sheriff late morning today. May be happening now. I dont know. Reporter can you tell us why lyle has an attorney . As soon as i realized he had a lawyer we sort of stopped talking, pretty much. Reporter do you know anything about the alleged plan to possibly harm lyle . I dont know very much about it other than i believe its an argument. Thats about all i can tell you. You just heard the attorneys say it was a species plan a false plan. You also heard him say that Lyle Mitchell is standing by his wife Joyce Mitchell. And, in fact brooke i spoke with the Clinton County sheriff. He tells me that Lyle Mitchell is the first visitor that Joyce Mitchell has received over at Clinton County jail. He was there this morning. They spent an hour talking to each other. The sheriff says that she seemed comforted by the visit, that he appeared to be supportive of her and this is particularly interesting, brooke because as you know investigators have been looking at him. They have spoken to him. They have wondered if he had any hand in the escape plan. He also worked in the tailor shop with his wife. So far he has not faced any charges. He has, however, taken on an attorney to represent him. An hourlong visit. I bet they had quite a bit to brief one another on. Alexandra field, thank you so much. Lets talk to Mike Bouchard a Task Commander during the d. C. Sniper case. Mike welcome back. I know you all must have gotten hundreds upon hundreds of tips there. How are these investigators combing through all these different tips . Again, were hearing that the trail has gone cold. How have they determined that and how do they find out what is credible . As the tips come through, the investigators will put their most important people screening the tips and they are going to triage those tips much like an emergency room does. Someone says my dog was barking at something last night, that will get a lower priority versus someone saying i saw two people running through my backyard last night. The investigators are going to follow up on every one of them and prioritize them and figure out if theres any links that can show any patterns. How do they know its gone cold . I dont think the trail is ever going to go cold. Its just a matter of time. They are probably laying low somewhere even if they did get out of the area they are smart. These guys have been through the system before. They now how to play the system. They are probably going to lay low for a while. Eventually they always get caught and screw up and do something wrong. We talked a lot about Joyce Mitchell this woman behind bars who got a visit from her husband today and apparently how she was supposed to have provided this getaway car and meet at a power plant once they broke out of the manhole. Weve now heard from the sheriff who is saying you know what my gut instinct was, she was not necessarily plan a. Do you think they had plan a, b and c and she was maybe plan d and do you think its possible she showed up at that power plant location and they werent there . Well this was obviously a wellplanned escape and they put a lot of time and effort into this thing. I would think that they would have a plan b or maybe she was plan b, that they just went along to try to get her to play along with this whatever their scam with her was. Why would they do that by the way . Why would they bother doing that . I dont know. They may have just tried to use her as a distraction. They may have come up and exited somewhere else saying im going to come out of this manhole or they may have been trying to see if she would play along with them. Im not really sure. We know that Richard Matts former accomplice told cnn, his words, this guy is a master manipulator, has amazing street smarts hes cunning. How would Joyce Mitchell then be so totally manipulated not just to help them get out but, potentially as were learning now, be willing to go on a plot to murder her own husband . Well, they are con men and very manipulative. They are bad people and deserve to be in prison. But they can read people very well. They can pick apart peoples weaknesses spot a weak spot and get something to blackmail that person they will use that to get additional benefits for themselves. Youve mentioned how obviously this is an incredibly elaborate escape plan. So many people ive talked to up until now, what were almost in day 11 in which a lot of times these plots are phenomenal up until the fence of the prison but dont entirely plan beyond the fence. This would indicate this was incredibly wellplanned out. Where else would investigators be looking . Well they are going to look at the family members, perhaps other people that they have associated with, people who have come to visit them in the jail. Any leads as to where these guys might be. Michael bouchard, thank you. Coming up next the naacp leader breaks her silence regarding her race. Hear what she says about being white. She talks about her childhood and whether she deceived everyone. Also a biker breaks down in tears after his release in that texas gang shootout. Im brooke baldwin. One day after she stepped down the naacp president stepped down from her position. Rachel dolezal says she did not pretend to be black, as her parents say. She spoke this morning with nbc matt lauer. Are you an africanamerican woman . I identify as black. You identify as black. Let me put a picture up of you in your early 20s, though. When you see this picture, is this an africanamerican woman or is that a caucasian woman . Thats not in my early 20s, but thats a little younger . I was 16 in that picture. Was she a caucasian or africanamerican woman . I would say she would be identified as white by the people who see her. At the time were you identifying yourself as africanamerican . In that picture during that time . No. When did it start . I would say about 5 years old. You began identifying yourself as africanamerican . I was drawing selfportraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon and black curly hair. Yeah. That was how i was portraying myself. But again, is dolezal lying . Her parents talked to cnn about what they remember of her childhood drawings. She did not ever refer to herself or draw pictures or anything that indicated she thought of herself as black. It was disturbing because the false statements continue. And as much as were concerned with rachels identity issues we are also concerned with her integrity issues. I have cnns legal analyst sunny sunny hostin with me and russell simmons. Okay you two. You just heard rachel talking about the brown crayons versus the peach crayons when she was 5. Her parents call bs on that but she says she identifies as black. Is that okay . Im so confused by this woman. I dont think its okay. I think race can be fluid, especially for someone who is multiracial like myself. Race has always been fluid for me in terms of identity. What do you identify with most or do you identify with all of the races. I think this woman identifies as black when it is a benefit to her. I mean if her parents are saying she didnt identify as being black as a child, we know that she sued Howard University for discrimination as a white woman. Right. So just a few years before now, she identified clearly as white. And so im troubled by the fact that she now says she identifies as black because being black is a culture, its identity, its a race. And to sort of suggest that you can just become black is something that im uncomfortable with. I want to come back by the way, to the howard suit the hate crime allegations. If she had said listen there have been a lot of conversations, et cetera comparing the bruce jenner the Caitlyn Jenner identifying more as a woman than a man, identifying more as an africanamerican woman rather than a white woman, if she had explained herself more is there anything that she could have said that would make folks say, okay we get it . I dont think theres an explanation for White Privilege except you have the benefit, as sunny just said to pick and choose when and what you want to be for your own convenience. This woman chose to be that for her own convenience and it seems like a convenience of acceptance. This group in spokane washington she said she was black and they accepted her on face value that she was black. She made a difference she helped the community. Certainly. But she also tipped the space of a black woman who could have been a leader of that organization as pretending to be that. Black people in this country dont have that convenience. In fact, for most people in the history of this country who passed it was illegal to pass as a white person. You were actually put in jail. Passing was about survival not acceptance. Shes using it as convenience and thats deeply troubling. And i think she may also be using it to get ahead. Perhaps she wouldnt have become a professor of Africana Studies and perhaps she wouldnt have become the president of the naacp in washington. How would she be perceived if she said im a white woman and i would like to be the leader of the spokane naacp or help the community and i think thats a terrific question especially for someone like michael. When i am on the ground in ferguson and baltimore, the first face i see in sanford, florida, its this guy. Hes an integral part of what ive been calling the new civil rights movement. Hes been an integral part of black lives matter. Michael is not black. Hes been embraced by the black community. I think when you look at the history of the naacp, it was founded by many white people. It was founded by white women. She would have been embraced. I think its thank you for your kind words. That was really sweet. I think its important that im still not going to be stopped by the police im not going to be stopped and frisked and walking into a restaurant and people grab their purse as i walk into a restaurant. Im an ally and i try to be an accomplice. I think its important for white people to see this story and recognize we have to be allies especially in times like this. So you see a woman pretending to be something that she is not and taking space of leadership of black leadership where we need to uplift black leadership in this country and follow black leadership and the young black leaders in ferguson and new york and baltimore who are doing the work on the ground it is our job not to take their place, not to pretend to be them but to support them and never pretend to understand their struggle because, as white people we dont have those problems. Michael skoinik and sunny hostin thank you both. Just ahead, Tropical Storm bill making landfall. Well take you to texas. Folks are on high alert. Also love him, hate him, donald trump is in it to win it. The greatest hits from his speech. 45 minutes worth of zingers and why he says building a wall may be the answer to americas problems. Hes still pulling above the Chris Christie and john kasich by the way. But theres a huge field of candidates which is why hes getting a deliver of the vote. People are like yeah i agree with you. I didnt like obamacare, i dont like this. But donald trump is not a serious president ial candidate. I have to tell you that brooke.
