Just a reminder for everyone the houthi the rebel group that forced out the yemeni president , a president and government, by the way, backed by the United States saudi arabia, and the uae, united arab emirates. These Houthi Rebels have an ally as well, iran. Meaning the situation in yemen is quickly becoming this proxy war among these top powers in the mideast. The timing of all of this here has the u. S. Walking a diplomatic tightrope as fragile Nuclear Talks resume. Joining me retired Navy Commander jack wiels, military analyst and pilot, sir, welcome nice to have you on. Thanks brooke. So as we mentioned, we have these u. S. Ships the u. S. Want these seven to nine were not sure iranian vessels heading toward yemen. They want to head them off into yemeni waters, the Coalition Forces would then be the wounds to potentially board the iranian vessels. My question to you, youre the expert then what happens . Well, this is all something thats hard to anticipate how this may go down. Its hard for most of us in the navy or former navy to imagine the iranian navy kind of wanting to confront both this Coalition Force as well as these u. S. Navy ships that are there. The u. S. I would imagine, is not going to allow iran to deliver any types of weapons to yemen right now. Thats thats probably more than what we would call a red line. So i just its hard to imagine the iranian navy wanting to challenge that level of a force thats going to prevent that from happening. So why is it why is that difficult to imagine . I mean why is it tough to, i guess let me take it further, and distrust . Right . Its distrust and verify when it comes to iran. It totally is. And weve seen palets of first aid and baby formula being delivered. But they dont need warships to do that. The obvious suspicion is some type of arms and because of the strategic location of yemen, because of its place there in the straits going into the red sea and out into the arabian gulf the u. S. Is just not going to allow some unknown arms delivery to occur in that area particularly with respect to the types of weapons iran could pass along to the area. So just looking ahead the question is what would happen its hard to imagine, as you keep saying what would happen if the iranians on board their ships are hostile . I think the u. S. And or Coalition Forces are working through that now and working through the rules of engagement and what our response might be. Its hard to say. We have a deterrent force. A Carrier Battle Group along with the other coalition ships in the area. It would practically be a Suicide Mission for the iranian navy to want to take on that level of a defensive force in the area. So again, the logic just has us projecting out that this is going to resolve itself and some way or another iran will flex its muscle and show that it can sail over to that part of the arabian gulf and project power. And then probably turn around and go back. Its just hard to say at this point. Thats a big force for them to want to take on. So is that what youre anticipating sir in they would make a big uturn . Seriously . Possibly. Possibly. Its hard to imagine we would allow those ships to dock in a yemeni port. A stalemate my occur. A turnaround by the iranians may occur. Probably the last thing i would guess might happen now is some type of exchange of fire would occur between the iranian navy and the u. S. Navy or Coalition Force. By all means or measures wouldnt be a fair fight for more than a few minutes. All right. Jack wiles, thank you very much. Well be watching in the arabian sea. Thank you. As we continue of course to report on the situation, n yemen, we cannot forget about the growing humanitarian aid crisis there. And you can help. We have our website, our impact your world website that offers groups helping folks, go to cnn. Com impact for more. Lets go to boston where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is fighting for his life. The younger marathon bomber has been convicted of all those 30 counts against him. And now he is waiting for the same jury to decide whether he will be spending the rest of his life in prison or be put to death. That next phase starts today. People injured in this bombing and family members of those killed are expected to make up a large portion of the governments case. But the judge warning the jurors not to speculate on what punishment any victims family might wish saying you have no friends to reward or enemies to punish. To boston and my colleague Deborah Feyerick watching the second phase play out there. And we have it talk about this photo. We saw the courtroom sketch right, in court today in which you see this younger tsarnaev for lack of a better term flicking off what was it a surveillance video, back in his cell in prison. Reporter thats right. He was holding up his middle finger. That was july of 2013. It was introduced by the government. It was not entered into evidence. Thats why we wont get the original photo now. But according to the prosecutors, it really shows what they themselves are trying to prove. The prosecution saying Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was and is unrepentant unrepentant, uncaring, untouched by the havoc he created. Now the prosecution laying out the criteria which they say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev absolutely meets in terms of being eligible and that receiving the death penalty. And they listed it really from the crimes hes convicted of. They said kill innocence with a bomb done. Kill a police officer, done. Kill a child, done. Saying all of these were lines that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev crossed. And so it was interesting to hear the prosecution really going hard after tsarnaev. Nothing spared as they said you know look in terms of the people that he murdered they had no time to feel pain. They had no time to be frightened or he said they had time to feel pain time to be frightened. They had no time to say goodbye. They really made sure that everybody in that jury brooke, was knew that those four people who did not survive or were in the courtroom held up huge photos smiling when they were at their happiest. All of that taken away. And thats why theyre going for the death penalty. All right. Deborah feyerick in boston. Thank you very much deb. Youre watching cnn, im brooke baldwin. To the mystery death of a young man in Baltimore Police custody. The autopsy on the 25yearold is now complete. The names of the officers involved in his arrest released. But more information has not led, though, to any more clarity as far as how this 25yearold suspect, freddie graves broke his neck after he was arrested on april 12th. He died a week later. As he mentioned, the department has suspended the six officers with pay. Theyve released their names ages how long theyve been on the force. Officials didnt specify the reasons why. However, the mayor of baltimore did tell cnn this we know he asked for medical attention, we know the attention was not immediately requested for him. We know that was a mistake. That conclusion based on the fact that gray asked for medical help more than once while being transported in a van. Officials revealed gray requested his athinhaler at the same time asthma inhaler at the same time a van was called. They disclosed that gray was put in leg retrants. Officials do not know how or when grays spinal cord was severed. And whats more grays autopsy revealed his spinal injury of the only trauma to his body. There was no physical bodily jury that we saw, nor was it evident in the autopsy of mr. Gray. None of his limbs were broken. Cnn has affiliate w jayz thats obtain edject wjz thats provided video warning its tough to watch. [ bleep ] his legs [ screams ] [ shouting ] walk shorty that was after they tased him like that. [ shouting ] ive been recording. [ bleep ] ive been recording. Ive been recording. What car did they come out of, i dont yo . He own a bike. I got it. Dont worry about it. Dont worry about it yo. They to tase yu like that you wonder why he cant use his legs. [ bleep ] ow sir, i need off the street. Sure, i will. I sure will. With me now, spinal cord expert dr. Donald leslie the medical director at the shepherd center, a physical rehabilitation facility in atlanta, georgia. Welcome. Thank you. I have been told you do have a monitor. So are you seeing this video, this young man being taken away by police and placed in this van. When you hear again, we dont know when the spinal cord injury happened. This is according to police. When you hear a severing of a spinal cord 80 , how much force does it take to have that happen . I would presume a good bit of force. The spinal cord and the spine, you say the spinal cord was severed . 80 , yes, sir, according to the attorney. 80 . I would presume that a great deal of force could be necessary to sever a spinal cord depending on what happened to the vertebral, the boney elements around the spinal cord. So if you were to be pushed or fall how much force behind that . Can you try explain that a little farther . Im trying to understand. When you say bait of force. Give an example. Certainly. The patients we see that have hyperextension neck injuries when they fall, most typically in the bathroom, possibly and hit their heads, their chin on the bathtub, oftentimes that hyperextends the spine and can injure the cord. Most of our injuries at shepherd come from automobile injuries. Uhhuh. So the fact that when we see in this video, you can hear him almost moaning or wailing. And he looks like a rag doll. It look like his legs arent moving whatsoever as theyre putting him in this van. Would that be consistent with some spinal cord injury . Because the other question is something could have happened in the van. True. Something could have happened in the van. When i saw the video and saw him being picked up it looked like he did not have full strength of his legs at that time. At least thats what i see when i look at the video for the first time. When you hear hes apparently saying he couldnt breathe, hes asthma tick asthmatic, didnt have his inhaler on him. When you have a spinal cord injury, does it restrict i dont know if im using the right word trachea . Would it make it difficult to breathe, or would that area remain unaffected . The issue is that if you have an injury to the cervical spine, thats where the nerve ss that are controlling breathing are emanating. If its high enough in the cervical region you require respiratory assistance. So im presuming that that would have been the case. Hes asthmatic, so it might have been that his respiration was compromised despite the fact. Okay. Forgive me doctor. Ive got to talk to our control room. Somebodys keyed in. I cant hear the doctor. Can you guys push the button . Hopefully i can hear you now. There we go. Forgive me live tv. It happens. So can you show me i know you brought a vertebrae. You brought a spine. Can you show me what youre referencing . Yes. This is a model of the spine here. From the top to the bottom the first seven cervical one through cervical seven is at two, three and four, and maybe three, four and five. Theres a lymerick in medical school c three, four, five keeps the man alive. If you have an injury high, it can affect respiration and cause paralysis and or death. All right. Dr. Donald leslie with the shepherd semifinalpinal center, thank you so much. Lets talk about the community of baltimore. This evening, a protest is planned in baltimore over the death of freddie gray and against police brew attempt my next guest will be there, reverend jamal bryant pastor for the Empowerment Temple Church in baltimore. Reverend, welcome, thank you for joining me. Im honored to be here. Thank you. Can we just begin with the neighborhood . Are you familiar with this neighborhood in which freddie gray of taken in . I am. Can you tell me about it . Yeah. The neighborhood is really something that we really stereotypically dont talk about. They are a community they are a larger family as a consequence as you look at the footage, you see that the whole Community Came out and began really asking questions. They didnt turn a blind eye. This is at 8 48 in the morning. Nobody can understand. Were now a week out, and the police still have not filled out in the Police Report probable cause. I went down to the community, the people righteous no in indignation and upset, as they should be because they feel as if their community has been swept under the rug because what you did not say is that the incident took place four blocks away from the police station. Four blocks away. So the time lapse that sun accounted for is inexcusable from the Police Commissioner and from the mayor of the city of baltimore. Tonight at 5 00 p. M. The entire community, the real city is coming out to show that we are really upset about what has taken place. Four blocks away. This is the first ive heard of this because weve been saying over and over 4 minutes, 42 minutes, thats how long it took for freddie gray to get some medical attention. Right. Right, what happened is what youre seeing in that footage is the initial arrest. Two blocks away from that they take mr. Gray out of the paddywagon. They said to readjust his cuffs. They put him back in and then we have a lapse in time. Nowhere in the history of respiratory issues has anybody from an asthma attack had their spine severed by 80 . It wasnt because of breathing, it was because of malfeasance. And all six of those officers to be put on paid vacation is a further slap in the face if not a spit in the face to say that black lives really dont matter. That im going to pay you while were still investigating. And then to add insult to injury the Police Yesterday claimed that mr. Gray had a knife on him. What is not said is it was a pocket knife in his pocket that was not seen and he was not wielding it toward the officers or anybody. They had absolutely no reason. What the congressman said in the state house is in fact, it is hunting season for black men in america. And thats why theres a more outrageous from sanford, florida, to ferguson, missouri, Staten Island new york and now right here in baltimore. I talked to congressman hank Johnson Health care reform him on the show a couple of days ago. I pressed him on how that could be a blanket statement that all Law Enforcement are then considered the hunters. But back to your point, i understand i talked to a number of lawyers and understand the passion and frustration in your communities, ive talked to a number of people. At the same time looking at this from both sides, this is not exactly the best neighborhood in terms of crime. When you look at this young mans background im not saying this explains anything but it was lawful for Law Enforcement as they approached him and he ran, given facts about the situation, it was lawful in them approaching him and he ran. Heres my question since you do know these Community Members what is the reputation, what is what is the relationship in this particular community between police and the young people . Yes. Well, it is very kbiesive when we have evidence now that this young man is being put in a paddieywagon and there are no charges. There is no threat, anything illicit or illegal. You said describe the community. Nobody described the columbine community as being crime infested or when the Elementary School was shot up in connecticut, it wasnt based off of a neighborhood. Theres a pejorative misperception about africanamericans, to assume albeit negatively that because it is impoverished and red lined that its crime infested. This young man was doing absolutely nothing wrong. Im going challenge you. Forgive me, im not trying to be pejorative im trying to explain the law, people aring asking if he was just Walking Around the neighborhood and trying to be taken in by police he was lawful because of the Crime Statistics in the neighborhood it was lawful for them to do so. That was my point. Your premise was on based off of the neighborhood. What is not discuss sudden baltimore has had to pay out over 1. 5 million in lawsuits out of court because of the negative Police Brutalities that theyve been inflicting unchecked. Thats part of the reason why the attorney general has got to be sworn in immediately because there needs to be some oversight. Just as Blue Bell Ice Cream is contaminated, the police force in america is contaminated. If in the last ten years 1,000 unarmed black men have been killed at the hands of police without there ever being a check or revision something has to happen. I have one of the lead investigators from the Baltimore Sun on next hour to describe exactly what they found in reference to your precise point about the settlements and about the Police Brutality and how it has been a problem in the city of baltimore. [ ] the voice of the wild within. [ ] not taking any more chances, blue bell is yanking all of its products from store shelves. Theyre currently on the market in 23 states. This massive recall comes amid concerns about listeria contamination. The bacteria already blamed for three deaths. Were joined its nuts to see the pictures and freezers totally empty. I know you think blue bell and think primarily ice cream, but its everything they make. They make frozen snacks, School Institutions like hospitals, we know. This is an unusual step for a company to take to just pull all of its products, right. And thats because they still dont know how listeria got into its plants. Now this could have been scary. It is really scary. This company thought it had the situation under control. They thought it was just one machine and it only impacted snacks that i was saying, the frozen ice cream sandwiches. Instead, it turns out where the the story gets serious is the Institutional Sales to hospitals and Nursing Homes because that those are the exact people who are at most risk for death when theyre infected with this bacteria. And thats where it got serious, those three deaths you mentioned were all in the same kansas hospital. People in the hospital are eating this stuff, and thats how theyre getting exactly. The way the government knows it could potentially be blue bell is because all of those patients ate blue bell products in the hospital. And then they matched the strand of listeria in that ice cream with it was close to the strand of bacteria that the patients had. So it looks like theres a very strong connection here. We dont know definitively, but the cdc and fda are saying stay away from all blue bell products, which is also very unusual for a Government Agency to say that. Whats the ceo saying . Ceo has apologized. But you know it doesnt seem like really enough. This is a small familyowned company. Its never happened to them. Its 100yearold company. You know and one of the things that has come up in reporting this is how rare is it for listeria or companies to recall products because of listeria what is it . Thats a good question because anecdotally there have been a number of Companies Just in the past few weeks that have recalled their products for listeria. Saabra hummus, for example. I have eaten that. I have too. And amys kitchen, makes prepackaged vegetarian food recalling products for listeria. One of the reasons this might be happening is because the cdc and the fda teamed up about a year ago to sequence the genome of listeria to make it easier to identify different strands of the bacteria. The government is actually paying more attention to it which actually could increase the identification of this bacteria in food. So maybe this has been around for a long time. We just havent identified it for until now. Issues to figure out how it slipped in. Thats the big problem. Meantime no one eats blue bell absolutely not. Throw it out if its in your freezer. Thank you very much. Next here on cnn, a closer look at americas marijuana movement. How some are able to make millions off the stuff while doing the same has put many others behind bars. That was a tiny part of it. It went on for 5. 5 minutes. Price told reporters to get out. Let me bring in cnn sports Rachel Nichols where i dont think well need any bleeping for this conversation. Let me just say what was that really about . And has he addressed this since . Yeah. Look he was frustrated that information he didnt want getting out had gotten out via the Cincinnati Enquirer that covers the reds. He has issued an apology but only for the language. He says he is sorry about those 77 curse words, brooke. He made note in that statement that he wasnt sorry for the content. And thats where the problem is. Look there is a cycle that goes on here. The media reports what the fans want to know. And the fans are the ones who pay the money and provide the eyeballs for those ticket sales, for all those televisions contracts. You see the statement in front of you, hes not addressing the fact that Television Broadcasters put in 12. 4 billion dollars into major league baseball. Thats billion with a b. That money goes to clubs helps pay the salary. If you dont have the cycle of media, broadcasting games, reporting on games, fans getting that information being interested in the information, wanting to know what their favorite players are doing and following along, you might as well be playing in your Company Softball game. Its an important part of the process. Thats what hes going to need to realize. This will continue. This is the information age. You cant control information just because you dont say, hey, dont tell anyone. How do reds how does there coach play with the reds . I understand there are certain coaches that dont exactly love member of the media, cant possibly understand that. Being facetious. Is this his reputation dropping the fbombs, being fiery, and loveable in that way . Was this rogue . This was out of character for him. Hes not one of those guys. Hes known as pretty even tempered and calm. Obviously he was at a little bit of a breaking point. Look, the reds havent been doing well lately. About that thats got to be hard yeah. And everybodys entitled to a bad day. But im not sure that the reds havent been doing well because a reporter reported that a certain player may or may not be there. The reds havent been doing well because they have not been playing as well as the players that they have been playing against. Thats how sports works. So i think he was frustrated. This was out of character. I think a lot of the people around the team would just like him to maybe understand the larger message, that this is all part of the process. This is not state secrets. A lot of things that you discuss on your show it is important for information to be withheld. There is a larger purpose here. The larger purpose of sports is for people to enjoy it. For fans to know whats going on and be interested and be able to follow with whats happening with their favorite players . You start treating it like state secrets, withholding the nation lets fans do that, youre taking a lot of fun out of sports. Eventually people will walk away from the game. You dont want that if you your salary depends on people watching the game. Can i ask one final question just because youve been doing this for a bunch of years . Have you, Rachel Nichols, heifer a coach drop the fbomb at you . I have never had anyone yell at me in that way certainly. And certainly not drop any curse words 77 times. You do go head to head with coaches or managers or Team President s from time to time frankly. If you are not, you are not doing your job well enough. Generally, i have had very cordial relations with the people i cover. I think that most managers and coaches and people president s and players can tell when you have a legitimate quest for information. And if you treat a room with respect, you generally get that back. Sometimes people have a bad day. You hope, again, he apologized for the language. I dont think the language is going to offend everyone. Reporter that the intent does come through. Hey, fans want to know stuff. Thats not a bad thing. 77 times. Thats a lot of quarters in a curse jar. Thank you very much. Next hundreds of thousands of blast men are currently serving time behind bars for offenses involving marijuana. Today well have a conversation about marijuana and how some are profiting from it while others are going to prison for a long long time. Case in point, i want you to watch this clip from cnns original series high profits, it tackles how cannabis means capitalism center and jail time for others. This is going to end badly. Weve got exactly 100,000 in cash in the back of his car. I bet those guys right there are doing just what were about to do. Let me throw numbers at you. 2013 aclu report found africanamericans and whites used pot provely at the same rate. Roughly at the same rate. Africanamericans are more than four times likely to be arrested for marijuana possession. Adding to that an analysis by Human Rights Watch showing africanamericans are ten time more likely than whites to be sent to prison for drug offenses. On the other hand, those in the legal weed business are cashing in big time in states like we showed you, colorado. Oftentimes pot dealers are white. A Washington Post analysis found sales topped 700 million in colorado last year. And it is projected to jump to 1 billion by next. Joining me to talk about all of this cnn political commentator van jones and Justin Walters professor of economics and Public Policy at the university of michigan. Welcome to both of you. Glad to be here. Good day. Justin, let me begin with you because before we get into a deeper dive, lets talk about the piece you wrote in the new york times. Read this today, about the missing black men in american society. Tell me what you found. You look at the number of 25 to 54yearolds in the United States and there are 1. 5 million more africanamerican women than there are africanamerican men. Thats a disparity that you simply dont see in the rest of the community. So for every 100 africanamerican women, there are only 83 africanamerican men. Whereas for whites that rain shower joe 99. For whites that ratio is 99. Thats what we call the missing 1. 5 million. A big shrunk incarceration. 600,000 africanamerican men behind bars now. Another chunk is also probably due to mortality. Guys dying early. This is in large part homicide many many more africanamerican men are murdered than other groups. And the aids crisis also had an enormous affect on the africanamerican community. Again, mainly men. And so you just see this enormous demographic gender imbalance with far fewer men than you would otherwise expect to see. And you ranked the geography of some of this, well circle back to you. Van, let me quote someone quickly here. Michelle alexander, she wrote new jim crow. Shes been vocal about mass incarceration of black men. In an interview last year with the Drug Policy Alliance she said after 40 years of impover impoverished black kids getting prison time for selling weed and their families and futures destroyed, now white men are planning to get rich doing precisely the same thing . She asks. Couple thoughts but first to you, you know, if marijuana really become legal beyond just your colorado and washingtons what would happen to the men serving for this . First of all, i think Michelle Alexanders book, the new jim crow, should be required reading for everyone in the country. Its a heartbreaking but enlightening book about whats going on. I went to yale for law school. I saw and heard of kids doing every drug in the book on that campus. None of those kids went to jail. Not one. And yet four blocks away in the housing projects poorer kids same age doing fewer drugs got 15 20year sentence the for nonviolent drug offenses. You live in a country where ive told that a million times. Nobody is surprised. Country clubs yacht clubs, wall street drugs are used everywhere but only some people wind up going to prison. Thats heartbreak. My view is for every dispensary that opens in america, they should close a jail. For every legal dispensary that they open in america, close a jail and let people come out. The crazy part it this is you now have africanamerican men who went to jail for selling marijuana who are now felons and probably will not be licensed to sell legally. This is a complete you ask why is the racial divide so tough in america we live in two Different Countries honestly.
