CNNW CNN Newsroom With Brooke Baldwin November 6, 2014

Please. That was tuesday. Now i want you to listen to this mother of carlesha speaking one day later talking about philadelphia detective dave sloan. He sat in my kitchen in front of me and told me i bring your daughter home. Im bringing your daughter home. He said im bringing your daughter home. He brought my baby home. He brought her right home. Thank you. Right home. Smiles couldnt be wider. The gratitude couldnt be greater because the story here, this 22yearold nursing assistant is free. Rescued 115 miles from where she was taken sunday. Again, her name is carlesha freelandgaither. Shes where she belongs. The man who took her is in police custody. 37yearold Delvin Barnes was in a maryland courtroom for a separate abduction. Its equally disturbing. Let me tell you that story. The 16yearold virginia girl taken back on the 1st of october found naked, doused in gasoline and bleach and severely burned but she escaped from barnes according to police there. You are live in philadelphia with more on this one. Lets talk about this case there as it pertains to the city in which you are. How did they find this guy, Delvin Barnes . Reporter a lot of things fell into place in the right way, which is hard to believe and a very happy ending when you consider that horrible abduction scene we saw on that video. After that happened, you had a number of Different Police agencies working together and you had tremendous help from the public. A lot of it has to do with that surveillance video. This woman was in imminent danger. From that police had those images and knew this was something they eventually learned who police were looking for in relation to that other case. What happened here were a couple of key breaks. First of all, you had carlesha gaithers atm card used and a camera was relied on. By using images, they were able to get a clear picture of the suspects face and then they knew who they were looking for. Listen to how the police chief describes it. We found a scene where some items were discarded that belonged to her. A receipt was found there so we were able to backtrack that. It was a Grocery Store in philadelphia. We pulled video from there. Very good video. We got that out. The media was a great help to us because by putting that video out, we got a phone call from a person who sold this individual a car. Reporter so when police realized they were looking for devlin barnes, they were able to trace his car using a gps. They found him in a parking lot. She was inside the car at the time as was he. They closed in on him and able to arrest him and carlesha at home trying to rest and recover from an ordeal most of us cant imagine. The fact that that car salesperson put the gps in there certainly famazing. He was in a maryland courtroom this afternoon. What happened there . Reporter a very brief hearing. About three minutes where he waived his right to extradition. Hell be brought back to virginia where hell face charges in relation to the abduction of a 16 year old including attempted murder. A hideous and terrible situation. A 16 year old able to get away. This happened more than a month ago. Shes in the hospital now still recovering from the trauma of that situation. Barnes now facing justice soon to head to that state. Thinking about those families and two young women. Thank you so much. And now to this one. It looks like they finally got him. They got him. Just 24 years of age considered one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world. Hes a key bombmaker for the al qaeda Offshoot Group khorasan. Part of a plot to dip clothing in explosives to make bombs that Airport Security cannot detect. The u. S. Tried to take him out a couple weeks ago lobbying 47 tomahawk missiles in syria but they didnt hit him until last night. They pounded the area with air strikes including this one you see and this is believed the one in which he was killed in one of these strikes. Lets go to the pentagon to our correspondent there, barbara starr. Tell me more about this guy and what you learned. Reporter good afternoon. Let me start by saying u. S. Military officials believe they got him. They dont have the dead body. They dont have dna. They dont know 100 for sure. They do believe that the air strikes most likely were successful in killing this man. This is a guy they wanted to get very badly. The Khorasan Group that he belongs to key al qaeda operatives, sometimes called ateam of al qaeda now in syria. Very hardcore with Technical Capability to make bombs that could get past airport screening. He was a french jihadist. Thats another danger here. He had the capability to help with recruiting fighters to come to syria and get training and send them back into europe and then possibly send them onto the united states. So, look, this is someone they wanted to get very badly. And the key here is he was killed by all accounts in a car driving down a road. That means, of course, they had very specific intelligence about where he was and where he was going to be at a point in time. All of this adds up to theyre pretty sure she got him but nothing is 100 until they know. Let me ask you about that final point. Weve talked a lot in leadup to this air campaign in syria about the lack of intelligence. Intelligence led them to this location. What kind of intelligence might it have been, barbara . Reporter think of it this way. You are trying to go after a particular human being. You have to know where they are going to be at a point in time so you can launch a weapon to kill that person. Thats how blunt this is. That means theres really only two ways you get the intelligence. Either you have a source inside the organization close to the organization who has given you that information or you are able to monitor their cell phones, their electronic transmissions, emails, monitor their communication and that gives a tipoff about where theyre going to be. This tells you the level of intelligence and concern and priority that the u. S. Has placed on the Khorasan Group. Getting him is a start. U. S. Officials will also tell you this group still are not down and out and the u. S. Still considers them an imminent threat. Brooke . Still incredibly significant if and when as you point out appropriately this is a 100 hit. Barbara starr, thank you so much at the pentagon. Coming up next, a rock n roll hall of famer slapped in handcuffs. The driver of ac dc accused of tryi i hiring someone to kill not one but two people. And a move that will not make president obama very happy. A chill ing story of a confession turned hijacking. The whole thing caught on tape. Ive done an extremely bad thing. You have to talk to me. When you play with matches, you take the risk of burning yourself and hes going to burn himself if he continues to go down this path. The American People made it clear election day. They want to get things done and they dont want the president acting on a unilateral basis. That is House Speaker john boehner a short time ago warning the president not to go around the new solidly republican congre congress. First thing this morning, opinion page off the bat, boehner and mcconnell say appeal obama care. How . Theyre not explaining that thus far. They want to get Keystone Pipeline going and get businesses to hire more veterans and extend a full workweek to 40 hours and not 30 as it is for obamacare. Toughest challenges according to mcdonaconnell and boehner, the e complex tax code, and high healthcare costs and the savage global terrorist threat. Welcome to both of you here. Ron, let me begin with you. You wrote this piece. Basically here we have shellacking 2. 0. President saying despite that yesterday not going to change. You have as we mentioned boehner and mcconnell saying repeal obama care. Did no one get the message that americans are sick of this . No. No. And im not surprised. It was clear what the American People wanted. It was a reputation on the president. One of the biggest issues is gridlock. They want parties to Work Together and get something done. That was clear in the results no matter how you look at it. These parties are just because of a lot of factors such as . They are not very good leaders. One, theyre not very good leaders. The president doesnt know how to cut a deal. Boehner doesnt have a caucus that will let him cut a deal and mcconnell cant run the senate by himself. You have money and people are worried about their own selfinterests and not what American People really want and both parties right now clearly are just telling the country we heard you but were not going to listen to you. We know you want something to get done but were going to shove obamacare at the president and president will shove immigration at the republicans and rest of the country is saying more of the same. A lot of shoving it sounds like. I dont know how the American People will respond to that. Angela, let me ask you this. Its depressing. It is a little bit. President obama campaigned in detroit on sunday with a democrat who did end up winning, right . He won the open senate seat. He crushed his republican opponent by 13 points. Theres one example for you. How does the president lead his party in these final two years in office for him . I think hes got to continue on the same agenda. The reality of washington gridlock is that the president was trying to get something done with a house that did not want to cooperate and even with the senate, even though democrats had control of the the senate, you had a conflicting and always fighting Republican Party so now that they have control of the senate, it doesnt mean that all of a sudden its a kumbaya session. How will the same agenda work if you have a red upper and Lower Chamber . I think if the message was clear and the leadership in both the house and senate heard it, its that its time to Work Together. I think the unfortunate part of this wall street journal piece you brought up is it sounds like its more of the same. So hopefully when the president tells them as hes told them a hundred times, when you send me a bill to repeal obamacare, im going veto it. Here are things we can Work Together on. Yes, tax reform. Yes a trade agreement or a couple trade agreements. Yes, we can strengthen and tighten up obamacare and we need to continue on the path toward fixing the economy. Thats what the American People spoke loud and clearly on. Not a repeal of obamacare. Ron, i heard you wanted to jump in. Let me hear your voice. Well, whats happening is both parties are doing what you described. Its not just republicans. The president is saying, hey, send me a bill the way i want it and i might sign it and republicans are saying were going to repeal the signature thing that has your name on it and if you dont like it, well shut down congress. Theres just no getting around the fact that neither one of these parties and leaders of both of these parties are just completely ignoring what most americans want. They are catering to a very small slice of hardcore republicans and hardcore democrats who cant get outside themselves and see what the country really wants done and what the country really needs done. This is a great game. Its great tv. Its not helping the country one bit. The challenge is i think the president saying earlier on that his policies were on the ballot ended up being absolutely true and the fact of the matter is the five states that had minimum wage petitions on the ballot ended up being supported by the American People overwhelmingly supported even in illinois, the president s home state. There was a referendum were talking about policies, right . Lets talk postthumpage. Depending on how it goes on both sides in the next two years, which party it hurts or helps in 2016. So 2016, were all talking this morning and this is to both of you, you have all of these republican names out there who have been floated. You have the chris christie, rand paul, jeb bush, rubio, cruz, romney. Who knows. When this comes to democrats, you have power player Hillary Clinton potentially. Wheres the democrat bench . Wheres the democrat bench . Who else is out there . Time will tell. Go ahead, ron. You go ahead. What i was getting ready to say is it depends. One thing weve seen over time is candidates come and go. I remember marco rubio was supposed to be the huge star of the Republican Party and Immigration Reform ended up burying him by the same party that mcconnell says wants to consider Immigration Reform this time. Im not sure who will come around. We know we have heard a lot from Elizabeth Warren. We saw a love fest with Elizabeth Warren and Hillary Clinton not long ago on the campaign trail. There may be others. Democrats have been clear its time for a woman in 2016. Well see. 20 seconds. Two points real quick. I really agree with what youre saying there. Nobody saw howard dean coming in 2004 and he almost won the nomination. Nobody saw barack obama coming in 2007 and he won the nomination. We dont know. I will say last night, tuesday night made the bench weaker. We have 24 states in the country that are completely controlled in the Governors Office and legislature by republicans. Only seven states in the country right now are completely controlled by the democrats. Thats the bench. Right now its much weaker for democrats. Thank you both very much. The comedian is making a debut as a film director. His movie adopts a story of a journalist locked in an iranian prison. The journalist was sent there after he appeared in a 2009 skit set in tehran cafe. The iranian canadian journalist met up with jones who was pretending to be a spy as a joke. In days after that skit aired, the journalist spent 107 days in solitaire confinemery confineme. Can you tell me why a journalist met up with this american spy . Hes not a spy. Its a show. Its a comedy show. Its stupid. Its stupid, yes. Hes a comedian pretending to be a spy. Can you tell me why american pretended to be a spy chose to interview you . Why would a real spy have a tv show . Christiane amanpour talked to jon stewart this past week about rosewater. Jon stewart wrote the whole thing. Why this story line . I suspect that he really respects journalists. Deep, deep, deep down. Not even deep down. Very obviously. Thats one of the reasons he took on this story. As he pointed out to me, it isnt just about that journalist. Its about many of our colleagues all over the world. What he said is that he hopes that this kind of story, which is really very profound starts to break down maybe some stereotypes about various different nationalities. I have a bit of the interview. Take a look. You also focus very much on the absurdity of what happened. It comes from reality. You have 66 journalists imprisoned in iran right now and why they have arrested almost 300 journalists since 2009. More than 1,000 since the beginning of the revolution and to come to your show saying that no one is in prison. I transcribed those ridiculous things in the book. Not just iran. Turkey has al jazeera reporters. United states has prisoners in solitary. We dont want it to be dismissed as one regime. I think he genuinely believes and i heard him say it to others if you point out these absurd y absurdities of some of these regimes, in the end, you know, they will implode under the weight of their own dictatorship and weight of their own stupidity. Thats something that many people believe in. This is a real journalist film. Its quite remarkable. It opens next week. Speaking of journalists, lets talk about this event we attended with jon stewart who headlined this thing. I had no idea that chairman of joint chiefs of staff has pipes. Take a listen. A city that doesnt sleep and im king of the hill chairman of the joint chiefs so that was me squealing and giggling because who knew general Martin Dempsey could sing but on a serious note it was an honor to be there and we were talking earlier today and i would love to have you jump am because the most poignant part, love Bruce Springsteen and comedians that performed but this young man who walked out on stage who was paralyzed. Hes active duty marine. We have a picture of him. Hes paralyzed. Because of this fascinating piece of technology, he walked out there. This was a surprise performance, if you like, in a way that highlighted what this foundation does. Bob woodruff who is one of our colleagues, abc correspondent, anchor of the world news, went to iraq and he was very, very badly wounded by an ied attack. He has come up with this Amazing Foundation that now for the last eight years has put on these really unique fundraisers which is all about comedy and all these comedians give of their time, Bruce Springsteen gives of his time and raises millions for wounded and families and help them with things like care dogs, with things like trying to purchase this kind of technology. You remember you were there last night, there wasnt, i dont think, a dry eye in the house as he stood up there with his wife and showed us all how a man paralyzed from the chest down through the grace of technology has been able to actually strap himself to a device that allows him to put one foot in front of the other and some independence and they all have so much dignity and again i spoke to jon about this. Why have you chosen this as one of your charitable pursuits . I dont know whether we have that bit. He said, look, i started to visit them. I didnt agree with the iraq war. When i saw these people who the first calling to duty of their country went with no questions asked and then they come back and they can barely get attention, some of them living on the streets. Some cant get medical or Mental Healthcare that they need, this is something that we as a nation owe to these people and im so proud to be part of this foundation really. Gave me goose bumps. I hope to go to this event next week. People feel so sorry for me sitting in this wheelchair and i can be up here and look people in the eye changes everything. We cant imagine that. Thank you. Thank you so much to everyone who serves. Christiane amanpour, thank you. Good to see you this week. That changed last year when adams met with sam goldstein. He had an idea for a book and he needed an illustrator. After i showed him a picture in my portfolio, he said will you draw for me for my illustration book . I said, yes, i can. The 24yearold singer ditched spotify this week yanking all of her music from the streaming service. Her new release is setting sales records and the Music Industry is trembling. Taylor swift is shaking off dire predictions about the future of the music business in a year on track to have no platinum albums, her new one, 1989 sold more than a million copies in one week. Its the biggest album debut since 2002 and it comes despite this breakup. Swift dumped spotify. This week she pulled all of her music off the popular streaming service. Albums dont go platinum anymore. Its amazing she pulled it off and to do it without spotify makes it remarkable. Reporter in a wall street journal oped this summer, swift explained there are many people who predict the downfall of music sales and the irrelevancy of the album as an economic entity. I am not one of them. Taylor swift but traditional music sales are falling. Album sales tumbled nearly 15 for the first half of this year. At the same time, on demand streams are up 42 . The problem, streaming services dont pay musicians very much. On spotify, it comes out to far less than a penny per stream. Spotify defends its model insisting it pays nearly 70 of revenue back to the music community. But shunning spotify may not work if your name isnt taylor swift. This works for her and it works right now. I dont think it will work for many others and i dont think it will work in the future. People want to stream. People like me love their spotify accounts and they even pay for them. Reporter and swift can afford to take the chances. Shes the second Richest Woman in music earning 64 million last year. And the megasuccess of 1989 will only make those numbers grow. Lets talk about this with grammy winning jazz and classical artist. Maria, thank you for coming in. Lets play hypothetical. Lets say im a platinum spotify subscriber. I love what spotify offers to me. Love playing your single you wrote for david bowie over and over. Tell me why thats wrong from the perspective of an artist . Spotify is not in the business of selling music. Music is not their product. Their product is advertising and data collection. So the way that they get more eyeballs for their advertising to raise the price of advertising is by using music as the carrot and how do they get more and more eye balls, they make music practically free. Thats the problem with the artists because in terms of dollars and cents, give me an example of how much you as an artist would lose out if you produce an album for x amount of money. The checks i hear from people, i would never have my music on spotify.
