Sanders, some other top tier candidates are struggling to get out of the single digits. No doubt about that, ana. The candidates have been burning up phones trying to learn what these numbers were but wouldnt tell them until we revealed at 8 00. Last time we took the temperature of the iowa voters, very few candidates in the race but i was at iowa this morning, having just returned there from a Campaign Swing with Bernie Sanders and theres no doubt that this race is definitely on in the hawkeye state. We have 14 candidates who are officially announced or at least exploratory committees and despite having so many of these candidates in the field, the results have really not changed all that much from our surveys back in december. Lets look again at where these numbers stand right now. Joe biden and Bernie Sanders top the field and they do so by a pretty wide margin. Sanders trailing behind biden by 2 points. And theres not even another candidate who can crack 10 . Elizabeth warren at 9 . Kamala harris at 7 . Beto orourke at 5 and booker and klobuchar both 3 . Not another candidate of the 20 registered above the 1 mark. Thats important because the candidate must earn at least 1 in three different polls to gain access to the upcoming dnc debates. There is some movement from what we saw back in december and that Movement Really is to the benefit of Bernie Sanders. Look at where we stood in december. At that point, only 19 . Biden at 32 . Well, sanders grown quite a bit now. Up to 25 and biden lost ground down to 27 and the other candidates in the race really havent changed all that much, but the one number i will point out for you here, ana, is beto orourke. Not in the race yet. A lot of anticipation hes going to get in. He was at 11 in december and hes now fallen to only 5 . Ana . That is interesting, although, particularly noteworthy, i think, that the two candidates on that slate there who have lost support are the two that have not yet declared their candidacy. Im curious if the age of iowa caucus goers influences their vote. It really does, ana. Lets look at the influence in particular of young people. You know, as i mentioned, i was in iowa this week at an iowa caucus event with Bernie Sanders in iowa city. So many young people there so passionate behind his campaign and thats reflected in the poll numbers that we see among young voters. Look at this. Voters under the age of 45 support sanders the most at 32 , conversely, when you flip the number to the group over 45, thats the joe bidens benefit where he takes 32 of the vote and certainly a lot of energy with young voters. Generally, the older voters, especially in a caucus state like iowa where it does require work to go out and cast your ballot, that vote tends to be a lot more reliable but the big caveat we have to add any time we talk about polls, especially this far out is that there is a long, long way to go before any votes are cast. Its very unlikely that what we see from this snapshot today in time turns out to be how it is a year from now, but it does give us some idea of how iowa voters are thinking. Look at how things have changed in just the last couple of months. Ryan nobles, thank you. Mark, lets dig in deeper. While biden is at the top of the poll, he has dropped 5 points from december while Bernie Sanders we see is up 6 points. Do you think this means biden needs to hurry up and make a decision about running or still too early to matter . You know, i think were going to hear the former Vice President to hear his decision. A lot of pressure for him to finally make a decision but we see a couple of signs we think he is going to be running for president. We saw that Michael Bloomberg decided hes not going to seek the presidency and always the thought if Michael Bloomberg and joe biden to run tailligat the time, basically cancel themselves out. If you see Michael Bloomberg away and the Vice President is interested in running, perhaps thats what we see right now. I do think that we shouldnt be too surprised. Joe biden going to lose a few points because people wait for him to get in. When you talk about somebody in the news, their negatives will climb. Bernie sanders announced hes running for president to a cnn town hall a week ago. I think thats why we see his numbers jump as well. No longer on the sidelines but in the game. We see those two so far at the top but like ryan said, still very early right now and even those one percents right now, ana, i was just texting with somebody who received 1 in our poll and they are very happy about that. So let us not devalue that too much because its very important. You need to get that 1 to get into the debates and if you get a 1 in our poll, pretty good news right now for you. Get on to the bigger stage. Nooe nera, i want to look at the onethird. Nobody else cracked into the double digits besides sanders and biden. Elizabeth warren or Kamala Harris or one of these other candidates, how concerned should you be . This is what i think is a really important point in this poll. Vice President Biden and Bernie Sanders, Bernie Sanders ran before. He has 100 name id. Even in this poll, you see that senator warren, senator harris, beto orourke, cory booker, they have strong approvals but, you know, still a large number of iowans who dont know them. Theres room to grow. Its interesting Vice President biden is so far ahead not having declared and i think beto is another person who hasnt declared so far, so i think its interesting that we have the two front runners that we had before when we had one of them that hasnt declared so far. Congressman, democrats want to pick the candidate that can win back the white house. In this poll, age and ideology were big dividers. Among those under age 45, sanders has a 9 point edge over biden but among older caucus goers, biden is ahead there. The ideology, sanders leads biden by those considering liberals but moderate or conservative, biden has a wide edge. 36 to sanders 18 . Anything in that data that tells you who has the kind of support that should worry President Trump the most . Ill tell you what. I think there are two things in this poll that really jumped out at me that senator sanders and Vice President biden, their leads at the moment largely driven by high name id. Thats the first thing. But i do think that democrats generally are going to be driven by their more progressive wing which seems to me, which wants a next generation of leadership. Something new, something fresh. I would not be very comfortable if i were joe biden looking at those numbers. You have to think that Kamala Harris or cory booker or beto orourke or maybe even Elizabeth Warren, although i doubt it but one will emerge and break through because i think this is about the next generation of leadership. If youre President Trump, i probably would not like to run against joe biden, but no matter what, the democrats are energized and enthused and thats going to be the biggest challenge for the president. Lets talk more about the democrats on the campaign trail today because mark, youre there. South by southwest, where a lot of people were watching to see whether beto orourke would use the screening of a documentary about him to announce a president ial run. That didnt happen, but heres what did happen when he was asked about the decision to do the documentary. Watch. David asked me if he could do this at breakfast one day in austin and i was like, yeah, what the [ bleep ], were running for senate and weve got, you know, if you want to bring a camera along sometimes, i just didnt think it would be this. We had to bleep it out. Is he ready for primetime . No doubt. Were in a different paradigm right now than we were just say two years ago. You have the likes of beto orourke who seems to connect with the younger generation, speaks his mind. Take two steps back. If we remember beto orourke, wasnt even a choice for the democratic establishment to run here in texas. They didnt want him to run against ted cruz and came out of nowhere and did so well. Now they wanted him to run for the senate and decided not to. Its interesting, when he was on stage at that exact time on stage talking about that documentary, his Senate Campaign sent out an email. Not asking for money but what they were asking is to build their list because what they were saying is you should be the first to know, you should be the first to know whether beto orourke decides to run for president. Come join us now and be the first to know. Basically, again, another sign that beto orourke is inching towards running for president right now. This is a sign of building up a campaign, wildibuilding up supps and letting them know youre about to pull the trigger and run into the race. Building up a lot of suspense. If he doesnt join the race, can you imagine how upset the biggers supporters will be . Elizabeth warren at south by southwest today. She was asked this question. Is it incorrect that he discouraged you for running . If so, on what grounds . So bernie and i had a private dinner. My view is that dinner stays private. People who dont know the difference, between what you and bernie are saying, whats the crux of that . Bernie has to speak to what democratic socialism is. And the centrists have to speak what theyre doing. What i have to tell you so that was really an interesting answer, nera. Shes bernies, a democratic socialist and there are the centrists, not really defining herself. Whats your reaction to her answer . Look, i think most people know where Elizabeth Warren is. Shes been a fighter in the Democratic Party for a long time and shes laying out very aggressive policy agenda. She just called for breaking up a lot of the Tech Companies yesterd yesterday, has proposed universal child care. People know where she stands. On a number of occasions, she has differentiated herself from senator sanders on the issue of socialism. She is a believer in markets but highly regulated markets and been really a fighter against wall street for a long time. So i think shes differentiating herself from senator sanders but has been a champion for many liberals and many on the left. Congressman, former Ohio Governor john kasich asked if he considered a run for president. Heres his answer. I dont know what im going to do. At some point, theres a clock for all of us and there are deadlines but theyre not here yet. And i tell you this though, im not in a hail mary. I mean, i run when i think i can win. So we assess things. Just about every week, sometimes every day. Well see. Im not closing anything down. I just dont know. Not closing any doors. How likely do you think he is . Could he be a primary challenger to trump . I do see a primary challenger to the president. If its not larry or john kasich or governor weld, i see a primary challenger but i do not think. Who do you think it is . Who do you think it is . At this moment, not sure. It seems that hogan is more likely to be in at the moment but i dont think youd see both a larry hogan and a john kasich in a primary. Not likely to happen. It would be one and i dont see people wanting to go on a suicide mission. You could also watch too, there could be movements towards the independent route again because they think the primary path is just for close, they cannot go down that route. I think you could see that independent candidacy by one of these republicans. Of course, we have Howard Schultz in there too because i think what john kasich is concerned about is no one is speaking to the senator of the country. Greatest gift in the world for donald trump would be to have Elizabeth Warren as his opponent. Democrats need to nominate somebody who can actually speak to industrial and agricultural america without offending them. I think its been a very, very tough time for him but if you notice both of his lawyer, a highly respected man and a very highly respected judge, the judge said there was no collusion with russia. In fact, the judge in the Eastern District of virginia was sentencing manafort in a massive financial fraud scheme. What judge ellis really said is that manafort, quote, is not before the court or anything having to do with colluding with the russian government to influence this election.
