Not from the right wing. And when asked, a second time, to denounce White Supremacy yesterday at the white house he said this. White supremacists, they love you and support you. Do you welcome that . I want law and order to be a very important part, it is a very important part of my campaign and when i say that what im talking about is Law Enforcement have to police have to take care and stop defunding the police like in new york. I just told you. You denounce them . Do you denounce . I have always denounced any form, any form, any form of any of that. And while the proud boys have taken the president s remarks as a call to action and republicans urge the president to be more forceful and direct in renouncing racism, White House Press secretary mcenany said the president s beliefs are clear. Heres what she said moments ago. The proud boys are people who consider them to be members of this group, give voice to these misogynistic, antisemiittic, antiimmigrant groups, a despicable group by pretty much anyones standards and you say the president denounced them on the debate stage the other night, if thats the case then why are they celebrating what the president said on the debate stage in front of millions of people . I dont speak for that group so im not sure why youre asking if you denounce it you wouldnt put it on badges and tshirts, right . The president said do you he said stand back and then yesterday he said specifically stand down. A synonym and the president said, sure, when asked whether they should stand down so again its really interesting, too, to see the media is only one putting the names of the groups into headlines, media reporting. First time i heard of them was in the debate and the media continues to putt the names in circulation to give them public attention. Given 12 hours more than that since the debate from when he was asked to clarify yesterday and he didnt clarify yesterday and instead he did what you did when you were asked to denounce the group and pointed to past things. I dont know why you said you knew you would get the questions and why you wont say denounce the groups. You know what . Do you know what people have lost trust in the media . Theres a reporter from your network yesterday, your network, in a tweet im asking you a question. That has nothing to do with you lobbed your partisan attack question. The president and someone from your network said yesterday in a tweet the president dodged a question about White Supremacy from a cnn reporter. The president specifically verbatim asked yesterday White Supremacy, do you denounce them to which he responded i have always denounced any form of that. Those are the facts. And cnn, i know that truth is of no moment to your moment, but those are the facts. Why are republicans calling on the president to be more forceful. His own party. I want to bring in nia malika henderson. As much as she says that is a clear denunes yags, she couldnt flat out do it herself, nia. Why is this so important . It is so important because the biggest domestic terrorism threat comes from white supremacist groups like the proud boys which the president claims now that hes never heard of, doesnt know what they are, but they are using his words in that debate as a rallying cry. We saw part of this i think in 2016 with the david duke thing. The sort of ambiguity is part of the strategy here from this president. He is not going to out and out consistently denounce a groum that backs him and some way holds some of the ideology that he seems to hold, too. If you think about the antiimmigrant rhetoric, this is what proud boys believe. Yeah. Am ambiguity, perfect way to put it and despicable. At a rally last night in minnesota, the president again deployed fear and sowed division, renewed attacks on a freshman democratic congresswoman. What what is going on with omar . I have been reading the reports for two years about how corrupt and crooked she is. [ chanting ] lets get with it. Lets get with it. How the hell tells us how to run our country. Can you believe it . How the hell did minnesota elect her . What the hell is wrong with you people . Another massive issue for minnesota is the election of joe bidens plan to inundate your state with a historic state of refugees. Biden will turn minnesota into a refugee camp and he said that. Congresswoman omar is a furch from somalia that fled the country when she was 8 and been an american citizen for two decades, a frequent target of trump since she was first elected to congress two years ago. The Trump Administration announced yesterday it will slash the number of refugees admitted to the u. S. To a new low next year. Ir want to discuss this and bring in maria santana. Nia, look, we have seen this. This is a page of the president s playbook since the moment he came down that escalator and declared the candidacy in 2015. That is exactly right. Demonizing black and brown people, demonizing immigrants, as well, and this idea of who the country belongs to. Who are the real americans. If you think about his 2016 campaign, the idea was to turn the country back to a time when it was much whiter than it is now and certainly white people had much more power than now because america is a much more democratic country, a much more diverse country, as well, since the 1950s but he is playing on these white anxieties about a diversifying country. It is despicable and dangerous. I think people look at this election as a referendum on trump but a thing thats fightening is hes stirred up the fear among the base that win or lose this is likely to be around for quite sometime with the followers of donald trumps, this seasonse of anger, lashingt like the proud boys and the sense that somehow this country is being taken away from them by people who dont look like them. This is a despicable i think chapter in this country and i think it is just the beginning of trumps involvement in it and what he stirred up. Maria, you have learned that the president is planning to put the law and order message on display in a very public way targeting immigration violators and playing on racism. Thats right. We spoke with two sources who are familiar with the proposal by the Trump Administration to put up billboards highlighting immigrants that committed crimes and released to local authorities, seen as a move at targeting these socalled sanctuary jurisdictions, these sanctuary cities, places that limit cooperation between federal immigration authorities and the local police. It is unclear right now where or when these billboards would go up. Sources say theyre having them ready before the elections and unclear what they will look like, will they include names, faces, photos of the immigrants and what crimes they have committed . What we are learning from some former and counturrent official that unprecedented. They have never heard of Something Like this ever being didnt before and some people are really questioning the motives behind this like how does this bolster immigration message . What is it doing . It really is coming off right now as being strictly political, something to bolster the president s cam pan, the law and order image but most importantly to stoke fear in these communities because what these billboards would be telling people is heres a person, they dont belong here, dangerous and living in your community and theres a lot of concern about what that could lead to. If Something Like this does happen. But it is also yet another federal agency using their position to help bolster the president s president ial campaign. Maria, thank you so much for sharing your reporting with us. Niamalika henderson, thank you. I want to talk about the National Security implications with this with peter strzok. He worked in the espionage section before he was fired. Hes now suing the Justice Department saying that his firing was politically motivated. He is the author of the book compromised Counter Intelligence and the threat of donald trump. You write in the book, quote, i dont feel that i have the option of keeping kawquiet abou the danger to our national strategy. False claims about voter fraud. Failing to denounce the threat of White Supremacy in a very clear way. Do you think the president is a National Security threat . Brianna, thank you for having me. Yes, i do. I started in the fbi mid90s and i worked the beginning of my career against the domestic Terrorism Group with violent White Supremacists and time after time again, research and the investigations we saw proved time and again that this sort of acknowledgement certainly from anybody in a position of power is both a powerful recruiting tool and we see that going on right now and more insidiously it sort of builds an acceptance within the general mental state of america that this is okay and for the president to be saying that is really damaging and more than a societal damage. That is a damage to the nation as a whole. And then of course thats just one facet of every we see in sort of a revelations of his tax records showing this financial exposure to foreign nations but it presents a picture of a man who is in fact a danger in my opinion to the u. S. National security. I want to talk to you about the financials in a moment but just back to your point about dpesing extremists, and this is obviously something as you said you have experience with, when the department of Homeland Security has a draft assessment saying White Supremacists are most lethal threat to the u. S. , what are the concerns that the fbi would have about how that could play out . I think the fbi has the knowledge through investigations of looking at all the issnciden of violence in america and the preponderance of the attacks are a link to ideology that involves some sort of racial supremacy, thats concerning because that is whats a lot of these cases driving people towards violence and it is something we absolutely have to be taking a stand against. The fbi can investigate and the department of justice can prosecute it but it takes more than that. We have to have the sort of leadership coming from the top of our nation all the way down in our government, in our society saying this is not acceptable. Racial violence is not who we are and any instance of it should be snuffed out and stifled and denounced, not accepted, not the things we hear from the president. So explain why it is so clear or why its so important for the president to be clear. We hear the white house say over and over, he has denounced it but when i think of the occasional denounce yags it is like pulling teeth. Under considerable pressure a couple days after heather hire was killed in charlottesville. Sure is not a denunes yags, right . That is not a clear word. Explain why even as the white house insists people want to duck tate the language of the president why clear language is so important. He shouldnt be issuing apologies. The first thing he said should be denouncing it. He should not give the muffled excuses. When he talked about charlottesville he said theres good people on both sides of the issue and thats reprehencible. Referencing the proud boys to stand by is reprehencible. Its not enough to have an explanation afterwards. Thats not okay. In the firsten stance he should be seeking to tamp down unrest, seeking inclusion, denouncing. Hows it objectionable, how can it be problematic to say im against racial violence . To have any other position at all is simply unacceptable with what we stand for as a nation and every person needs to think through what it is coming out of the mouth of the president of the United States. I want to listen to another moment that happened during the debate. But if i see tens of thousands of ballots being manipulated, i cant go along with that. Ill tell you what does that mean you ill tell you. It means you have a fraudulent election. Peter, is that voter intimidation . What role does the fbi have in this right now . I think its certainly casting doubt on the efficacy of our voting system. Academic research around the u. S. Very recently has shown that mailin voting is amongst the most secure way we have as a nation to cast the vote so when he the president gets up there saying he sees the instances of fraud which dont exist in reality, there is no data, no evidence to support the assertions he is, one, undermining the faith of americans in the electoral process. Two, laying the groundwork for contesting the election. Third, most disturbingly, this is the sort of disinformation that russia among other people push into the social media right now so when you see the things lining up, when something isnt supported by the facts, isnt possible based on research being done and then at a third time a hostile foreign nation working to reelect President Trump is saying exactly the same thing, that is an extraordinary concerning combination of factors. The president has as im sure youre well aware criticizing the fbi director chris wray speaking honestly about russian interference, no widespread voting fraud. Do you worry that the president could fire wray . Well, i worry about what the president is doing across the board to the United States government, to the leadership of that. Certainly director wray confirmed to congress that russia was working right now to denigrate Vice President biden and there by assisting in helping President Trump. I look at some of the reporting coming out of a cia survey that concluded that Vladimir Putin himself was likely personally directing the interference to aid President Trumps reelection, drawing on more than three dozen pieces of information and i cant imagine the pressure on the leadership of the cia right now but when you go time and again across the government institutions trying to stand up against manipulation and as a result threatened by innuendo, of course im worried and all of america should be worried any time we see the president placing undue pressure for anything other than the truth. This weekend the president will hold back to back rallies in wisconsin, a state that is experiencing an alarming rise in coronavirus cases. Officials report 335 now cases a day up 24 from last week and wisconsin is not alone. There are states across the u. S. Seeing a spike in cases. Several zip codes in new york report rates five times higher than the generate of the state. Cnn National Correspondent bryn gingras has more on the hotspots. Reporter new york state Governor Cuomo saying this is a stark reminder we are not out of woods yet. He identified 20 zip codes across the state where combined the daily Positivity Rate is five times greater than the total statewide. So now resources are just being flooded to tehe areas. Looking at the state, the Positivity Rate is hovering just above 1 which is still much lower than many areas across the country. Brianna . Bryn, thank you. I want to discuss the trends with dr. Peter hotez, a professor and dean of tropical med soon at Baylor College of med seas medicine. I want to begin with wisconsin with the third highest rate of new cases in the country and seeing the president having rallies there over the weekend which obviously flies in the face of advice by his own task force. Could this be a super spreader event . Absolutely. This is actually quite unbelievable, isnt it . Wisconsin is now leading the nation or near the very top in terms of states of new covid19 cases and transmission, the green bay area especially where i think one of the rallies is proposed to be held. It makes no sense to do it there. We have now possibly the beginning of that fall surge, that fall third peak, that everyones been talking about. Looks like it may be happening in wisconsin, maybe the dakotas, as well. 16,000 new cases over the last week, i believe. Green bay seems to be the epicenter and the president is proposing to hold a rally there. I dont understand what the logic is and why hes so defiant of the science. Its really extraordinary. You are involved in a race for the vaccine there at baylor and so i want to ask you about this announcement from moderna where they say they wont have a vaccine before the election. Does that surprise you at all . No. This is what we have been saying all along. I have been saying that it will be the second or Third Quarter of 2021 before a significant amount of vaccine is released to the public. The public has access to it in the United States. Dr. Redfield said that a couple weeks ago and dr. Fauci more or less consistent about that and fitting in the time frame that we wont even know if any of the three vaccines that are now in phase three trials in the u. S. Actually work until closer to the end of the year, november, december. That is an important point. We still dont have evidence that any of these vaccines actually work. Theyre looking promising in terms of inducing virus antibodies but we shouldnt assume they work or are safe. Well know better over the next couple of months and then make decisions if and when we release that to the public through emergency use authorization and important to be cautiously optimistic as dr. Fauci says. We dont know for sure if they work. Dr. Hotez, great to see you. Thank you so much. Great to see you. Thank you. These heavy duty dry cloths pick up a crazy amount of hair this is all you. We stopped cleaning and started swiffering. The First Comprehensive study on the spread of misinformation in the coronavirus pandemic is out and finds the single biggest propagator of lieins is one person, the president of the United States. Cornell researchers analyzed the articles of january through to may and there were more than a million articles that they were looking at that contained misinformation and the main source they found was trump. The flood of misinformation so large that researchers are calling it an infodemic. I want to bring in someone from cornell. Thank you so much for being with us. I think this is so important to take a look at. Can you just give us a sense of the biggest takeaways for you . Thank you so much. We looked at the infodemic landscape and we see theres major themes that emerge. One of the big themes is this topic of miracle cures we heard about. That included disinfectant, uv, hydroxychloroquine. And that really composed comprised most of the misinformation coverage over those months. What we see is when we look at the coverage of the miracle cure topic much of that was associated with the president of the United States. So 38 of the covid misinformation was linked to coverage of the president. And how did you trace this back to the president . Were you just looking at quotes that he made . How did you do this . Thats right. So we used some tools search strings, using irnd kndis of misinformation in association with other words and so we what emerged is categories and saw for example a big category is Fact Checking and did see 16 of the misinformation coverage was fact checks which is a good thing, want to encourage more of that but we also saw that 38 of the misinformation coverage was in association with the name of the president of the United States. Okay. So you found that there were these many topics and some were more pervasive. Right . You found that some were the most clickable . What really drew people in . Certainly. So there were a number of topics from fat soup to 5g that came and went, fire fauci hash tag came and went and miracle cures topic was most consistent and those themes within miracle cures, hydroxychloroquine, were the most dominant. We looked at a range of issues in science at the alliance for science that are essentially riddled with misinformation, most notably we do work on gmos and in march we decided to sort of pivot and look at the this is information landscape around covid19 specifically and the miracle cures topic in association with the president was the most dominant theme. Could you tell, sarah, who was seizing on the material . We looked at traditional media and so essentially this is the traditional media covering the president and what the president is talking about. As we see theres a real role for media to play in preventing a second infodemic. What can the media do to prevent that second infodemic . Yeah. I think a lot of us have people in our lives who we think are very reasonable people and still so confused by the information out there so i hear that number from you, 16 fact checks. We need to get that heading north. Sarah, thank you so much. Thank you so much. Pleasu pleasure. New today, hollywood stars are warning that movie theaters may not survive the pandemic. Plus, as the president plays nigh cleave on the proud boys it fits a pattern. And as fears of election and racial unrest surge across america, firearm groups are reporting a sharp rise in black americans buying guns. Well talk about that. Service stand back, im gonna show ya how doug and limu roll, ya you know you got to live it if you wanna wi. [ music stops ] time out only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Lets call it the hardly no them defense. Hours after the president told a far right Extremist Group to stand back and stand by in front of 75 Million Viewers i dont know who the proud boys are. You will have to give me a definition. I dont know who they are. The president has a clear pattern of denying somebody in trouble or criticized him or anyone he doesnt want to be soernted with. Lets start with the impeachment inquiry and the former ambassador to the eu who was set to testify in the ukraine scandal that there was a quid pro quo to hold up aid money. I dont know him very well. I have not spoken to him much. This is not a man i know well. Seems like a nice guy, though. I dont know him well. Just a month before the president tweeted that he loved to send sondland a really good man and Great American to testify. Sondland was also a big donor to trumps inauguration and he was nominated by the his ambassadorship a year and a half before. On the u. S. Ambassador to ukraine i really dont know her. Im sure shes a very fine woman. I dont know much about her. Not only did the pressure know her, according to a white house transcript, trump told ukraines president she was quote bad news and would quote be going through some things before she was eventually fired as ambassador to ukraine. And after one of Rudy Giulianis indicted associates said the president pressured ukraines president to announce an investigation on joe biden i dont know him other than pictures taken which i do with thousands of people. I dont know him at all. Dont know where he comes from. Know nothing about him. Trump also said this about Army Lieutenant colonel vinman who helped to organize the white house portfolio and set to testify about what he heard in that phone call. I dont know vindman at all. Some of them are never trumpers. What evidence do you have that he is a never trumper . Well be showing you real soon. Very soon, real soon turned into real never. And trumps 2016 campaign not much different. Despite calling one of his Campaign Advisers an excellent guy to washington post, this was the word on him once he was convicted of lying to the fbi. I never even talked to the guy trump told fox news. Even Paul Manafort the head of President Trumps campaign got the hardly know him treatment, too, when convicted in the mueller investigation. I didnt know manafort well. He wasnt with the campaign long. He managed the campaign. As trump obtained the delegates that secured him the republican nomination it was a big deal, right . Just two days after trump controversially promoted Matthew Whitaker to acting attorney general matt whitaker, i dont know him. Ditto for miles taylor, a former security department. The president claimed hes never heard of nor did he notarial and that prompted the top aide to tweet this picture of them together in the oval. After the uk ambassador to the u. S. , one of the most important foreign diplomats in the u. S. Lost his job for calling the Trump Administration inept the president said in a statement, quote, i do not know the ambassador but he is not liked or well thought of within the u. S. Doesnt know him but certainly has very strong opinions about him. And then when it came to his alerched affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels trump told the Associated Press in 2018 i had nothing to do with her. Well, nothing to do with her apparently translates to reimbursing Michael Cohen for a hush money payment to Stormy Daniels by trumps own admission. When Prince Andrew was involved in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal i dont know Prince Andrew. I dont know him, no. Seems like maybe he does, though, judging my photos with the president saying that Prince Andrew quote a lot of fun to be with. You may recall Greta Thunberg and told her to chill, to get anger management and then at davos called her angry and then quote, i dont really knowing in about her or when rapper and former apprentice lil john said trump called him an uncle tom. He was on the apprentice. He was . I dont know. He did seem to know him. When he earlier called lil john an amazing and wochl guy, a terrific guy and a great friend. The president once named Anthony Scaramucci who was a family friend to be White House Communications director. The president is most competitive person i have ever met. I have seen this guy throw a dead spiral through a tire. The president would say he barely knew him after he got the boot 11 days into the job for badmouthing ore officials in the administration. After the president mocked a reporter disability something that he denies to this day despite clearly doing it right there on camera he claimed despite having one of the alltime great memories i certainly do not remember him. Well, he said that he covered the president in the business dealings for years and interviewed trump inside his office and heres what the president said about one of his democratic critics. Im not sure i ever met bob casey. I never met him. Problem is the president himself in the very next breath fact checked himself. Im sure i did. I shook his hand. Im not sure. His father was a good man. Knew him a little bit. But were dealing with a totally different person. I dont think i dont know this man. Hes a senator. There are 100 i dont know him now russia factors large in trumps hardly know him defense. Heres what he said about Vladimir Putin before he was president. I spoke indirectly and directly with president putin who could not have been nicer. I do have a relationship. I can tell you that hes very interested in what we are doing here today. They treated me so great. Putin sent me a present with a beautiful note. But as trumps proclivity for his russian friend faced scrutiny i dont know who putin is. I have nothing to do with putin. I dont know anything about him other than he will respect me. When russia was interfering in the 2016 election this just came out. Wikileaks, i love wikileaks. Wikileaks of course is synonymous with the founder Julian Assange and when arrested i know nothing about wikileaks. It is not my thing. I know nothing really about him and not my deal in life.
