Less than the man that held the job before her. Theyre fighting back coming out with a big statement this weekend. Originally we heard when she was dismissed this was a management issue. Thats how they characterized it and now a more recent statement and the publisher of the paper trying to make clear that she was not dismissed for any reason having to do with gender or pay. Part of his statement, he says, quote, perhaps the saddest outcome of my decision to replace Jill Abramson as executive editor of the New York Times is that its kaz an example of unequal treatment of women in the workplace rather than accepting its a specific individual who as we all do have strengths and weaknesses. A shallow and factually incorrect story line has emerged and trying to make the points why he says she was dismissed and personal here and cites a couple of reasons including inadequate miscommunication and mistreatment of colleagues. Days after it seemed like we wouldnt hear anything at all, why are we getting this statement . We talked to Sharon Waxman about, a media executive, found of thewrap. Com and she says when you have, even a whiff of an idea of some kind of genderbased discrimination, youve got respond to it. It would only suggest that the publisher of the New York Times is so worried about being regarded as a sexist hes willing to take the risk of legal liability here detailing how terrible a manager Jill Abramson was. So is this he said she said . Is this this is a comment about Women Holding powerful positions in the media . What is going on here . We have Jill Abramsons camp feeding this information, the reports of the salary issues, the statement of the times. The broader narrative, the reason we are talking about this is face it. This is a very high profile position. A lot of people are wondering why we dont see more women in the high profile positions in the field and why the women dont seem to be hanging on there very long. Look at the photo. This is Jill Abramson in boxing gloves. Her daughter posted this on instagram, a warning, a shot across the bow saying theres more to come and saying and doing something about this. We dont know what. You certainly know, you know the culture of the New York Times. That picture is clearly no mistake. How did you take the statement from sulzberger . It was needed, necessary and probably too late. For three days thats a narrative from abramsons camp saying she was the victim of sexist behavior, paid less than the male predecessor and that she was treated poorly and that was descriptions of her as being pushy, as being brusque, sexist descriptions and its possible she was a poor manager, not holding on to the support of the newsroom. In my experience with her, she was a beloved figure of reporters and someone that the editors struggled to work. Struggled to work with how . When i was thinking of coming over here, i met with her and talked with her and whether i was leave, she reacted and made it easier to leave. She wasnt very friendly about it. Lets just put it that way. Its that kind of brusque behavior, that kind of aggress i behavior. It wasnt in the statement, i dont know if you looked at this, as well. But its been reported now this was a fight over the other comanaging editor to bring a comanaging editor in, hire him and basically being disingenuous with the upper management of what she was doing and does this sound right . Is this what youre . It does sound right to me and probably the final straw in this case. And what happened . Well, the publisher of the New York Times chose. He has a right to do that. He owns the paper and promoted dean mckay. First africanamerican editor. He is a historic figure and overshadowed. You have the times up against the ropes issuing a statement. We havent heard a word from Jill Abramson. You saw that boxing editing. And people coming the defense despite what some of the personal opinions of her management style might be but a whiff of sexism and rollieing around her. So many women, tens of thousands of women across the country experienced the same kind of things she said she has. Can i read a tweet from the times . One. Lydia says the real struggle for equality in the newsroom, involving one person, i agree with that 100 . That is ugly situation and very real issues here. It will get more interesting. Yes . Hearing from her tomorrow. Brian, alexandra, thank you very much. A huge merger in the works today and could provide your cable provider. At t is expected to meet to finalize a deal and if it goes through, that deal worth about 50 billion. Earlier today, Fredericka Whitfield spoke with economist steven moore giving his take on how the deal might affect consumers. Youre going to see all sorts of vertical integration going on. Again, i dont think theres a lot of people saying,oh my gosh, monopolies are developing. Not in this industry. You have startups doing incredible things. Youtube now by the way people get their tv on youtube. Now, at t and directv are both staying quiet on this for now. And out of the emotional homecomings in san diego, county, in california, tens of thousands of people had to evacuate their homes as fastmoving flames from numerous fires moved in but today crews made major progress in the battle allowing officials to lift more evacuation orders. That was a huge relief for everyone whose homes were spared. To see my home, oh, its just such a relief. I feel so bad for the ones that lost everything. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity have been a huge help to firefighters all weekend. Meteorologist Alexandra Steele is monitoring conditions there. So, will the good weather continue through the week, alexandra . Miguel, it absolutely will. You know, short term, the next couple of days and into the week or so, forecastwise, things improve. The stage is really set for really a rough wildfire season so whats happened now, we have the ridge of High Pressure in control. Not allowing any rain, allowing heat, strong santa anas and replaced by this area of low pressure so with that we have got a flow off the water. This southwesterly wind bringing in the cool ocean temperature and also the moisture, of course, from the water so its increasing the humidity. So you can see it increasing through tonight and today. The 40s, the 50s, the 60s. Certainly on that score theres more water in the atmosphere. Also, were seeing water in the atmosphere. We are seeing some rain so finally now that rain beginning to make the move. Wont get into Southern California but northern california. So we have got moisture, we have also got temperatures moving in the right direction. They have been in the 90s, 97, down to 70s now. The humidity is coming up. The Weather Forecast is certainly favorable for the fires. The fire forecast, less so. This year alone we have doubled the fiveyear average for fires. So, last year, miguel, the driest year on record for california. This year, certainly will usurp that. This is the first time in a century the entire state has been in a severe drought or worst. Now, working on the third dry winter in a row here. So forecastwise short term okay. Long term not so. Thank you very much for that not so good news. Thanks. We are 905 days from the 2016 president ial election but you think it was this year with the attention focused on former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her potential republican rivals. Lets bring in erin mcpike at the white house. She has a new book tour coming up. Made a bunch of speeches and talk of the sunday shows. Is there anything stopping Hillary Clinton . Reporter republicans are certainly trying to stop her. Like karl rove bringing up her health and record at the state department to use against her now. Some Top Democrats are growing concerned. Hillary clinton is so far ahead, so early. I do worry about the inevitability thing because i think its offputting to the average voter. I think that was an element of her campaign the last time. Yeah. This is hard for me because i did talk with her and thought it would be better that she not get out there early because her favorability was so high that all that could happen in this is go down because somebody would do the stupid things that karl rove has just done. A concussion is by definition a traumatic brain injure. Reporter rove and other republicans kept up the pressure. Any president ial candidate or Vice President ial candidate is going to have to answer questions about their health. Health and age is fair game. Fair game for ronald reagan, john mccain. Reporter rove insisted she might choose not to run because of her health and said the bill clinton comments supported the case. It was six months of very serious work to get over. Reporter theres also benghazi. I think she clearly bares responsibility for what the state department did or didnt do with respect to that crisis. I think its a major issue and we havent heard the last of it yet. I think its ridiculous. I think its a Hunting Mission for a lynch mob. Reporter but whatever comes her way, defenders say theres one thing i know for certainly. Karl rove engaging in cheap shots wont back off Hillary Clinton. Reporter and clintons health came up at a White House Briefing earlier this week. White house spokesman jay carney asked, did the white house worry about her health when she was secretary of state . And he responded just by taking a dig at karl rove saying that rove was the last person to acknowledge that president obama was headed for reelection and generally called into question his judgment, miguel. Only in washington the more popular are, the bigger the target. Erin mcpike, thank you very much. Theres uncertainty about the horse to race for the triple crown. As you know, its declared war on western education in nigeria. You went to a Church Service near where the girls were kidnapped. What are you hearing from the folks there . Reporter nigeria is a very spiritual nation. I spent a lot of time in nigeria, part of my childhood here, and religion is part of the backbone for communities in nigeria. I spoke to members of this congregation and even though the church, 40 of the people that go to the church are from the very area where those girls were actually kidnapped. And talking to people, they tell me that they have lost faith in the government to actually do anything in terms of a concrete plan to rescue those girls and all they have to rely on are simply their prayers. Take a listen. Our confidence is not in the government. Our confidence is in god, god is going to touch them, intervene in whatever way he is going to do.
