After the plane vanished. Sources also tell us that investigators are confident it was the flights captain who radioed in that last message and there was no sign of stress or possible third party when he said good night malaysian flight 370. This morning search crews discover a possible new signal, raising hopes that they may be closing in on the flights socalled black boxes which could explain exactly what happened. Lets begin with that new signal. Cnns will ripley is in perth, australia. Good morning, will. Reporter good morning, carol. We know that Data Analysis is happening as we speak on that fifth possible ping that was detected, not by that towed pinger locater. This was actually detected by whats called the sonar bu es. The Australian Military was dropping these into the ocean. It has an under water microphone that goes down about 1,000 feet. It listens as well. And were told one of these microphones picked up what they believe could be a signal from an in flight data recorder. They need to check it out. Thats why theres Data Analysis that will be happening through the overnight hours in perth. We also got a new tidbit of new info. We know the british ship, the hms echo that was with the chinese ship that thought they heard something, they cleared that area. The british ship is moving to join the ocean shield. We know that ship will be in the area as well listening to see if they can get a lock on more possible signals. A lot to follow here, carol. That means, will, the search area has shrunk yet again, right . Reporter thats right. We know the actual visual search area, the area where theyre looking for debris is now down to 22,000 square miles or so. That is the smallest that it has been yet. Still, though, no debris sighted. It will be interesting to see what happens as they corporate to narrow the search area. The other big developments i told you about this morning, investigators say it was captain Zawahiri Shah who said good night malaysian flight 370. They believe the plane dropped to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Nic robertson is in kuala lumpur with more of these developments. Hi, nic. Reporter hi, carol. What we know is investigators played the air traffic recording, they played that to five pilots who knew both the first officer and the captain. They say they were able to identify the first officer speaking when the aircraft was on the ground, but that last communication at 1 19 in the morning was given by the captain. They say there was no third party in the cockpit, no sign or sound of distress coming from the cockpit at that time. Of course, who was in control, who was talking through that last communication, a very important thing for investigators. Were also learning after the aircraft did that loop back, flew back across the malaysian peninsula, it dipped below military radar, reappeared 120 nautical miles further away and came up again. What were being told is the belief is from all the data that the aircraft was dropping down to an altitude between 4,000 to 5,000 feet, possibly they say because it was trying to dodge what is a busy commercial air lane in the sky there. Again, this is what theyre putting together from the best data they have at the moment, carol. So why didnt they tell us this information before . Reporter investigators have been keeping this very close to their cleft. We understand one of the reasons they didnt, in fact, announce the aircraft had made that dip in altitude is because they were aware if they had said that, that would tell people that somebody was in control of the aircraft. It does seem to be something very closely held. They have taken a lot of time to get the information, not only about the change in altitude. Remember we were talking about flying around radar control. All these different indications showing somebody was controlling the aircraft. That sort of information the investigators have been not willing to put forward. Were getting it only now from sources, carol. Nic robertson reporting live from kuala lumpur. Lets bring in mary schiavo, cnn aviation analyst and former Inspector General. And peter goal, former ntsb investigator. Investigators now say the plane took off from kuala lumpur, made that strange westward turn back over the malaysian peninsula. At some point they say the plane dipped in altitude to as low as 4,000 feet and disappeared from military radar. Mary, care to tackle that . What does it tell us . It can tell us three things. We still dont know why, but we know three things that could have accomplished. Once, if you had a loss of pressurization, youd want to get down below 10,000 feet so you didnt have to rely on oxygen and you could live in a depressurized cabin or cockpit. Two, you want to get out of other traffic. Thats where you have to do it because commercial airliners fly at much higher attitudes, 18,000 feet and above. Three, if you dont have any communications, you need to get out of other traffic because if your transponder is off or broken or dont work, you dont have cligs avoidance. Three reasons to get out of harms way. Peter, if the plane did dip low and dis disappeared from radar, might that mean those fishermen on the other side of the country, on the other side of malaysia, did they really see flight 370. Remember this . Translator i was fishing when i saw the plane. It looked strange, flying low. I told my friend thats not normal. Normally it flies at 35,000 feet. But that night it touched the clouds. I thought the pilot must be crazy. Does that lend more credence to what those fishermen say they saw, peter . Certainly you have to take their eyewitness statement more seriously now because apparently the malaysians have some evidence that theyre confident in that the plane was down at 4,000 or 5,000 feet. I think, as much as mary wants to point towards the aircraft, the real issue is it looks like more and more somebody in the cockpit was directing this plane and directing it away from land. And it looks as though they were doing it to avoid any kind of detection. Thats a very disturbing but thats where the evidence is leading. Lets have that debate between you two. Mary, you seem to think that maybe something mechanical went wrong with the plane. As captain shah radioed in the last transmission, he sounded calm. There was no sign of distress. Could something catastrophic happen that fast after that last transmission . Well, it can. And the point is we still dont have any motive and any evidence of a crime yet. By the way, if youre trying to get away from radar, although apparently malaysian military radar didnt go below 5,000 feet, for most civilians radars, they take you down almost to the runway threshold. Youd have to get down a lot lower than 5,000 feet to avoid radar. The fishermen story is problematic. If they were at 5,000 feet, they wouldnt have seen the detail on the plane. They said they could see the doors and windows. 4,000 to 5,000 feet is still way up there this the sky. If anything, its just more mystery. You cant say its a crime and cant point to the mechanical failure. We have a lot more evidence now which is always helpful in the investigation. Peter, malaysian investigators say they do think its possible that this was a criminal act, that someone on board that plane deliberately made that turn and the altitude changed in a way that didnt make sense. They seem to think it was deliberate, may have been criminal. That is the governments position. I think weve all been skeptical that there isnt quite enough evidence to indicate that. As mary said, theres nothing in the captains background or in his Flight Simulator that indicates anything amiss. But there is this the performance of the aircraft, how it got into the ocean hopefully 1,000 miles, if were looking in the right place, from perth, is inexplicable and has to involve some degree of human kror. Mary, when they do find the black boxes and i think they will. Five separate signals have been picked up in one general area, although its a large area. It seems like theyre going to find those black boxes, what will they tell us . Will they fill in all the blanks for us . They might fill in all the blanks at the very first attempt to download. If, as the malaysian authorities are claiming, someone committed the perfect crime, certainly youd pull the Circuit Breaker on the recorders. If they go to download it and find the Circuit Breakers are empty, then we know. I suspect well have a lot of data certainly on the flight data recorder. Thats why its going to be imperative to find it. There was a south African Airways that went down in the indian ocean in 87. That was found in 16,000 feet and it was still good, one of the recorders. Theres hope theyll find it all soon. Mary schiavo, peter goelz, thanks for joining me. Appreciate it. Thank you, carol. Still to come, not a single piece of debris has been found, but a possible debris field depends heavily on how the plane might have entered the water. Welcome back to our special coverage of the search for Malaysia Flight 370. A number of new important developments unfolding. Sources tell us when the flight took the mysterious turn and fell from the radar it must have plunged in altitude to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. 34 days after the flights disappearance, malaysia is confirming that it did, in fact, dispatch search aircraft soon after the plane disappeared. Sources also tell us investigators are now confident it was indeed the flights captain who radioed in that last message and there was no sign of stress or a possible third party when he said those final words to air traffic controllers, good night, malaysian flight 370. This morning search crews discover a possible new signal, raising hopes they may be closing in on the flights socalled black boxes which could explain exactly what happened. Even as searchers continue to hear pings believed to be from the black boxes, not a single piece of debris has been found in the search. Is it possible the plane stayed intact while sinking to the bottom of the ocean . Some experts believe no matter how the plane might have come down, there should be at least some sort of debris floating on top of the water. Gary tuchman has more. Reporter not a spec of wreckage has been found from Malaysian Airlines flight 370 raising the question is it possible all the wreckage is under water . The chances of not having debris very, very remote. Reporter jim tillman is an aviation expert with decades of experience as a lpilot for American Airlines and army corps of engineers. He says if amount of debris on top of the water would vary based on the scenario of how the plane went down. If it went down at a steep dive at high speeds, thats what happens to an Alaskan Airlines jet that plunged into the pacific in 2000 killing every one on board. Midwest of the wreckage would go under water, but not all. Its not like sticking your hand into the water, its like slamming your car into a brick wall. Thats the more likely result of that kind of situation. Youre going to have lots of debris. Reporter what if there was a catastrophic explosion in the planes last few seconds. Thats what happens with twa flight 800 off the coast of long island in 1996 and pan am 193 over lockerbie, scotland. In any case while an airplane breaks up while in the air, youll have a wider debris field. You may well have small fraegmentes of the aircraft that are going to be identifiable. Reporter then the hijacking of an Ethiopians Airline flight in 1986. In that case the pilots ran out of gas and were forced to make an intentional landing. Even that resulted in significant debris on top of the water. Water is like concrete. If you hit it regard enough, it destroys the planes integrity. It will open up things like compartments and sections of the airplane that have items that will float. The best Case Scenario for the Malaysia Airlines plane would be the type made by captain Sully Sullenberger on the hudson river in new york city. That is by far the most unlikely scenario. Sully did an incredible job of flying, but he landed on a river. The river is pretty relaxed, lets say, by comparison with the ocean where youve got swells of 10, 12, 16 feet. Its pretty difficult to make that kind of a landing on water. Reporter the search continues for the wreckage. The landing scenarios just mentioned, all part of the investigation. Gary tuchman, cnn atlanta. Still to come in newsroom, the heroes from yesterdays school stabbing. Were hearing from those who rushed to help. Were working that live from pennsylvania. Many held a prayer vigil last night to honor the victims and the heroes. There are more stories of har w harrowism among the students. One told Anderson Cooper how she tried to save her best friend. As soon as the three boys got stabbed in 30 seconds, i let out i dont know what to do so i led out a blood curdling scream. At that moment there was somebody that pulled the fire alarm. I was just trying to keep people alive. I was trying to keep the one kid alive that i was applying pressure to. I was telling him to keep talking to me, keep awake, that he needs to stay awake, that the emts are going to be here soon and youre going to be fine and everything. So many stories of heroism. Elizabeth cohen is here to tell us more. Reporter carol, when you think about that kind of composure from a teenager with no training, its really amazing. Minutes before gracie did what she described, a boy helped her by protecting her from the assailant. Gracies boyfriend wrote on the Facebook Page to this young man, he said i cant thank you enough for everything you did for gracie. This boy that protected her is now in the hospital. The other stories were hearing is when the assailant was allegedly stabbing people, that some of the kids took off their hood kis and used them as tourniquets. Were hearing about the assistant principal who helped wrestle the alleged assailant down to the ground. Were hearing about the Security Guard who acted very quickly and got kids away from the crime scene. So as awful as everything is that happens here yesterday, there were so many people who did their best under terrible circumstances to minimize the damage. Carol . The other hero in this that should be mentioned, this teenager who pulled the fire alarm, got all the students to run out of the school. He was injured himself. Reporter right, exactly. Thats really, really quick thinking. Here he is, hes injured and he thinks quickly enough to pull the fire alarm to alert people that they need to get out of the building. Its the kind of thing you hope you would do under those circumstances, but until it actually happens, you dont know if youre going to have the composure. That young man had the composure. Elizabeth cohen reporting live this morning. Thank you. Lets turn our attention to the suspect, alex hribal, 16 years old. Yes, he will be charged as an adult. He faces four counts of attempted homicide, one for each person critically injured. The total number of victims reflected in the 21 counts of aggravated assault. Hes also charged with possession of a weapon on school property. Earlier on new day, the teenagers Attorney Says both families and classmates are dumbstruck. He has never had any Mental Health problems whatsoever. Hes never been in the Juvenile Court system. He was a wellliked student. He wasnt how some kids refer to other students as weirdoes. Hes not. Hes not a loner. He interacted well with other students. Were going to try to figure out what happened here. Obviously theres a problem. You just dont leave and go to school and do what he did yesterday. The parents are horrified by this, naturally. This is not their son. They cant figure it out either. Obviously there was some deeprooted problem which caused him to do this. Investigators searching the home seized a cell phone and computers. Wednesdays stabbing happened at a time not considered dangerous. According to one witness, School Safety drills dont cover this, when things happen early in the morning. Weve never really be prepared for a situation that would happen, if it happened in the middle of the hall or during class change or Something Like this before school even started. Still despite 21 people being stabbed, School Officials say their protocols appeared to work effectively. Joining me is ken trump, president of the national School Safety and security services. Good morning, sir. Good morning, carol. Ken, School Officials say their safety protocols worked. In your mind, did they . I think that there are a number of things that worked well, having the School Resource officer, Security Officer and administrator there. We need to have adult visibility as students are arriving. The story behind that in many schools around the country is the custodians open the doors as early as 6 00 a. M. A lot of people are in the building before the teachers in many cases arrive. We need to have more adults supervising and ready to go at that time as soon as the first kid hits the door in case Something Like this happens. I think in terms of the other protocols, i have questions and a different take on the fire alarm, for example. Pulling the fire alarm actually causes more kids in the hallway. If you have mass attackers, multiple attackers and a mass incident, youre actually exposing kids versus having them locked down. I think the intention was good there. As far as training that as a procedure, a number of us have concerns about that. Thats a Lesson Learned and for debate and discussion because you have kids running out of the building, First Responders coming in, not knowing who and how many bad guys you have in the building could actually have the opposite effect of what fortunately worked okay in general yesterday. I think that some of the confusion might be, and this is from interviews i read from students, they say they really didnt prepare for a knife attack, per sachlt they prepared more for a gun attack. Is there a difference . There certainly is, right . Actually, the focus on the weapon is really not where we need to be in general. Obviously a gun will cause more damage faster than a knife. But there was a lot of damage done yesterday with a knife. The issue is staff preparedness, student preparedness and the training that will cross all different types of issues. Youre going to have to deal with lockdown prirdness, communications, social media, text messaging, crisis communication, parents blocking the school, parentstudent reunification, a number of those issues. Thats going to cross the board. The time of day is an issue because as the students pointed out in your interviews, we typically dont see School Administrators diversifying their drills and doing lockdowns between class changes. Early is when students arrive. We need to defensive vears five the drills while at the same time not going overboard. We have some schools telling them to bring a can of soup to put in the desk at Elementary School to throw at the gunman. We also shouldnt be doing lockdowns at 12 30 in the morning when its convenient for adults instead of during lunch, between class changes and as students arrive. Thats the time of day where were likely to have an incident as weve seen in other cases and where were least prepared. Apparently, ken, there were three securitytype officers inside the school at the time this went down. Still this kid managed to allegedly stab 21 people. So is the real solution to put metal detectors in every school . No, carol. Metal detectors give a quick fix for our emotional security needs. When you think about it, youd have to run them 24 hours, seven days a week. If youre running metal detectors, i could come in at 6 00 at night while there are basketball practices, drama clubs, put something in a locker and come in the next morning clean when you scan me on a metal detector or have somebody pass something through the window, go to the locker and get what i put in there the night before and still have the incident. Youd have to run it 247. We know we still have weapons in sterile areas in tsa airports and other government offices. We need to focus on the people. The number wurn way we find out about weapons an plots is from kids who come forward and tell an adult they trust. Were already seeing indications in this case about possible threats online and comments the night before. We need to make sure we have the mechanisms in place to encourage people to come forward and report. With social media today, its even more challenging because of the trajectory of messaging and how quickly things go and how hard it is to cycle that back together. Youre right about the threats. The students say this suspect apparently threatened an upper class man. Police told cnn yesterday they were investigating that. Well see how it turns out. Ken trump, than, for being with me this morning. Still to come, investigators have heard several pings consistent with that of a planes black box. Specifically theyve heard five separate sounds coming out of the motion. Even as the search area for flight 370 narrows, the immense ocean depth and tricky ocean floor could pose a totally new problem. Brian todd has that part of the story from washington. Good morning. A number of new developments unfolding right now. Sources tell us at one point when the plane fell from radar it must have plunged in altitude from between 4 throu,000 to 5,0 feet. They say it was the flights captain that messaged in to air traffic controllers. Search crews discover a possible new signal on the flights black boxes which could explain exactly what happened. That brings the number of sounds from the ocean to five. These new sounds were detected by sonar buoys. Searchers still have to deal with the massively deep ocean and sometimes unstable ocean floor. Cnns brian todd live in washington with that part of the story. Good morning. Reporter good morning, carol. The ocean depths are very intimidating. The titanic was down about 12,500 feet below the surface of the ocean. It took search teams more than seven decades to find that. These signals coming from the ocean floor, if they are on the floor of the ocean are about 14,700 feet down. Thats almost three miles down. As you mentioned, the ocean floor itself is complicated in that area. Its not charted all that well. What we do know from oceanographers is there is a flat plain at the bottom of the ocean surrounded by mountain ridges, and also the possibility because of the mountain ranges down there that audio signals could bounce off certain mountains or hills down there and maybe throw up some confusing signals as far as the possible location of the plane. Thats another thing theyll have to deal with if they get down that far and find something tangible. Also the silt in that area is considerable and it is apparently very kind of its porous and moves around a lot. If the plane did travel down there and hit the bottom, it could be buried in some silt. That, again, will complicate this search if they find anything out there. Brian todd reporting live. I want to bring in mary schiavo, cnn aviation analyst and former Inspector General of the department of transportation. Welcome, mary. Thank you. Good to be with you. Good to have you here. Now theyve had five separate instances where they picked up sound from underneath the water. That has to be good. It is, it is very good. Then they can nair vo the search area when they put the unmanned subs down with the sidescan sonar. Even with the pings, it will take many days if theyre lucky and many weeks if theyre not, to locate it under the ocean. The more pings the better. You can zero in on where you want to be. At what point will they decide to send those drone submarines under water to start looking for these black boxes . When the pings stop. As long as they can keep zeroing in every day we learn how they zeroed in the search area. For example, even in cases where theyve had even better search information, it has taken many days or weeks to still locate the black boxes on the ocean floor. There was another crash in the indian ocean about 20 years ago. And they located those with the side scan sonar in just a couple days. Thats what theyd be hoping for here. When the pings are all done, theyll send them down. Lets talk about some of the other developments today. Malaysian investigators say it was indeed the captain who uttered those last words to air traffic controllers. Does that mean anything . Sure. Its very important. We also have to put it in perspective. We need to know who uttered all the other words in the flight to air traffic control. Usually what happens is the pilot not flying, often the copilot, but not always, the pilot not flying handles the radio communication. We know because of this latest information, we know the pilot was alive and well, didnt report any mayday or hijack code or anything like that. We can maybe assume that the copilot was flying, but not necessarily. And at that point whatever was going to occur hadnt occurred yet. The indications are that at least that point things seemed normal. The planes altitude seemed all over the place. Investigators saying the plane at one point dropped to below 5,000 feet. What does that tell you . You can read a lot of things into that or not. Like everything in this investigation, if youre flying a plane at 35,000 feet where this flight was and you had a depressurization, you would need to get down below 10,000 feet and in a hurry. Also, if you had lost your communications and your transponder wasnt working, you have to get out of the commercial flight traffic lanes. Thats above 18,000 feet, for a couple reasons. One, if you dont have communications, you cant talk to flights or air traffic control. Two, that would mean, if you had no transponder, that your Collision Avoidance doesnt work. Thats a very dangerous situation. Thats another reason to get down and out of air traffic lanes. 4,000 to 5,000 feet is usually not low enough to avoid radar, certainly not commercial radar. Bottom line, we need those black boxes to tell us exactly what happened. Mary schiavo, thanks so much. Still to come in the newsroom, well check in with Richard Quest to find out what hes found out about the new signal and other revelations in the search for flight 370. [ male announcer ] youre watching one of the biggest Financial Services companies in the country at work. Hey. Thanks for coming over. Hey. [ male announcer ] how did it come to be . Yours . Ah. Not anymore. Its a very short story. Come on in. [ male announcer ] by meeting you more than halfway. Its how edward jones makes sense of investing. Weve been talking this morning about this new revelation that the plane plunged in altitude to between four and 5,000 feet. The question is why. Theres also a new report about the planes flight path. Richard quest is in new york with more on this. Good morning, richard. Good morning to you, carol. So tell us about the new flight path and why the plane might have dipped to 5,000 feet. All right. Well, weve always known that there were rumors of altitude differences. Youll recall right at the beginning there was one report it went up to 45,000 and then down to 23,000. Weve had it at 12,000. Weve actually had it at 4,000 feet before. The issue is whether or not it was flying that low level to avoid other air traffic. If you look at the map and you see how the plane was flying, after the turn in the middle of the south china sea, it was effectively doublebacking on itself. And, therefore, there was always the risk of it meeting on coming traffic. So the theory goes the pilot went down to a level which he knew would take him out of or whoever was flying, i must correct myself it would take him down to a level out of the way of any other traffic flying in either direction. 4,000 feet, that far away from any airport, he would have known that he would have been safely out of danger of other traffic. So let me ask you this. So we know the plane made that strange left turn. We know investigators think that the plane somehow skirted around indonesia, perhaps to evade radar. Now were hearing that the plane might have dipped to 5,000 feet for the reasons you just explained. Are investigators fairly sure this is now a deliberate criminal act . You one one and one and one together, and you have to add it up. You used the word deliberate. What you may be asking me is do they now believe its criminal and nefarious. Theyve always said its deliberate. For weeks the investigators very much since the first time they told us of the lefthand turn, they said it was evidence of the plane under the control of someone and that these actions were deliberate. Now, the issue has been whether deliberate equates to criminal, nefarious. We know theres a criminal investigation under way. What nobody has done officially on the record, so to speak, has basically said we are now saying this was now done with criminal intent. So that is where the unknown, if you like, still rests. Was this done with criminal intent . And so far nobody has specifically said thats the case. Richard quest reporting live from new york, thanks as usual. Thank you. This morning, the secretarygeneral of nato says there are 40,000 Russian Troops at ukrainians border ready for combat. In other words, those troops are not conducting training there. Meantime, ukraines acting president says those protesters who remain holed up inside two government buildings will not be prosecuted if they decide to surrender. But those prorussian protesters, so to speak, show no sign of leaving any time soon. Joining me now, former undersecretary of state, nicholas burns, and michael hirsch, chief correspondent for the national journal. Good morning, gentlemen. Good morning. Good morning. Thank you so much for joining me. I want to start with the Russian Troops. Michael, the fear here is these troops are ready to invade a different part of ukraine, at any time. Some say theres plenty of evidence of that. Its just a question of when. Well, that has been the fear for the past several weeks. But it appears that what vladimir putin, the russian president , has been up to, as secretary of state john kerry alleged just the other day, is more coverttype activities suited to putins you know, personal history as a kgb officer. It looks like they have been stirring up separatists, perhaps protesters for hire to occupy, inciting them to occupy these buildings. And right now thats mainly what is going on. Are negotiations between the Ukrainian Government and these protesters occupying the buildings in the cities of donetsk. Luhansk. Nicholas, when ukrainian Officials Say hey, russian protesters, we wont prosecute if you leave these government buildings and leave us alone, is that going to work . Well, there are indications this morning, carol, that it may work because there are now polls out showing that very small percentage of the residents of Eastern Ukraine want to see this kind of violence, want to see their municipal buildings being taken over by armed gangs, and they dont want to secede from ukraine and join the russian federation. So it may be that the people of ukraine are going to play a factor here. And it looks like the government of ukraine has a reasonably good chance of convincing some of these armed gangs to leave particularly the municipal the federal building, excuse me, in donetsk. This is obviously an attempt by the russian government to intimidate the ukrainians to weaken the government in kiev. And the russian government is clearly encouraging these demonstrations and the armed violence. And its right out of putins playbook in crimea. And michael, russia seems to have another tactic up its sleeve, withholding Natural Resources it ships into ukraine. Its even being jaed up the price of natural gas, 44 or more . Yeah, i mean, this has been putins main instrument of power abroad well, for most of the last decade. He always conceived of postsoviet russia as an oil and natural gas superpower. It was the way to regain prestige of the former soviet union which he has quite openly lamented the passing of. And so thats no surprise. I mean, this is a sort of economic leverage. In addition to economic inducements which he gave to former ukrainian president the former ukrainian president who fled several weeks ago. So the big question now is whether the russian government, under putin, will be willing to negotiate some type of a solution and whether the west will agree to, you know, perhaps some form of russian proposal to involves granting greater autonomy to some of these eastern ukrainian provinces. So nicholas, will the west agree to that . What will it do . Well, i dont think that the United States or europe is going to agree to the russian proposal for a new federal ukraine because what it would do is it would hollow out the Central Government in kiev and give all power to the regions. But i do think its possible, carol, that you may see negotiations over the next week or two between the european and Ukrainian Governments and the u. S. At the same table. But the new Ukrainian Government and the u. S. Are not going to agree with putins proposal. What the u. S. Can do is threaten Major Economic sanctions, should putin put troops into Eastern Ukraine. Hopefully that will be a deterrent. And we ought to be reinforcing our nato positions just to show putin that he does not have the right to threaten the baltic states, romania, poland, the nato members in eastern europe. We begin this hour with breaking news and a very busy morning in the search for malaysia Airlines Flight 370. Right now we have a number of important new developments unfolding. Sources tell cnn that when the flight took that mysterious turn and fell from the radar, it must have plunged in altitude to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Another new twist. 34 days after the flights disappearance, malaysia is finally confirming that it did, in fact, dispatch search aircraft soon after the plane vanished. Sources also tell us that investigators are now confident that it was indeed the flights captain who radioed in that last message. And there was no sign of stress or a possible third party when he said those words. Good night malaysian 370. Also this morning, the most important development, search crews discovered a possible new signal, raising hopes that they may be closing in on the flights socalled black boxes which could explain exactly what happened. Lets begin with that new signal. A fifth signal picked up. Cnns will ripley is live in perth, australia, to tell us more. Hi, will. Reporter hey, carol. Yeah, at this hour, they are analyzing the data from that sonar buoy which detected this fifth signal. Using sonar buoys is a relatively new concept. This is technology thats been around a long time, but theyve never used it for a search operation. They have these p3 planes. There are technicians that manually drop these buoys down into the water. And then the buoys have an underwater listening device attached that can go down at least 1,000 feet and listen. And one of these buoys has detected a signal that they think could be coming from a data recorder from the plane. But they have to do the Data Analysis, figure out the frequency and whatnot so that those calculations are happening overnight here in perth. And we could learn as early as tomorrow morning when we expect the News Conference could be held when they have something to announce. We could actually learn if this is a confirmed possible ping from a data recorder which would be great news in this investigation. But its incredible, carol. Were about to enter day 35 here. Still not one piece of physical evidence from the plane. No debris spotted. No photo. So obviously thats the big piece thats still missing. Youre not kidding. But the other bit of positive news, lets center on the positive this morning, shall we, is theyve narrowed that search area even farther in, right . Because all of the resources are going to one particular spot in the indian ocean. Tell us about that. Reporter yeah. You know, this is the smallest its been yet. 22,000 square miles. Still a large area, but it seems like every day the search area is getting smaller. And they keep refining it because theyve been analyzing the currents. Theyve been looking at where they think the debris may have floated over the past 34 going into day 35. And what theyre doing is theyre just sending these planes and these ships to do a visual search because they figure there has to be debris floating out there somewhere, and theyre very determined to find it. Will ripley reporting live from perth, australia. So where does the investigation go from here . Lets bring in captain van gurley, a form u. S. Navy oceanographer and fred hague, falmouth scientific incorporated. Welcome, gentlemen. Good morning. Good morning, carol. Good morning. Thank you for being with me. I want to talk about these sonar buoys. Are they dependable, fred . Yeah, theyve been very dependable. Theyve been used for submarine reconnaissance for years. Theyre just using that technology that theyve used for years, again, for submarine reconnaissance for a search and recovery mission. So captain gurley, now theyve had five separate instances where theyve picked up sound from juunderneath the water. How hopeful should we be . Well, carol, im very hopeful that they are on the right place now. When you look at the accumulation of evidence and the repeated pings that all match, all the specifications we expect, i am confident they are on the right place. The fact that the p3s now think they may have picked up something is even better news. That means the batteries are still alive. And it lets them refine the area theyre going to have to look on the ocean bottom even better because its a small area. But the smaller they get it, the faster the rest of the bottom search will be able to proceed. So fred, why cant they find debris . From what i understand, one, we dont know how the plane went into the water. But from what i also understand, there was a pretty strong storm several days after the plane went down. So that debris, along with the storm and with the currents, could really be hundreds and hundreds of miles away. So captain gurley, if they never find any debris, does it matter in the search for those black boxes . Well, carol, i think its important to remember to look at the fact were really doing two searches now. Theres the search that is proceeding on the Ocean Surface for any floating surface debris that may have still be there for still floating around and dispersed by the winds and currents. But the second search is on the ocean bottom. Thats the real debris field and thats where theyll find the evidence to help answer questions of what happened with this flight. Fred, from what i understand, they wont send those drone submarines down to search for those black boxes until they no longer hear any sound. At that point in time and its coming because its been more than 30 days, and we know those batteries are slowly dying at that point theyll about underneath the water and search. How long might that take . That could take, with the search area as large as it is says, it could take many weeks. But the fact that theyve narrowed it down now is very encouraging because the original 80,000 square mile area, when you talk that youre going to be able to survey maybe 10 to 30 square miles a day, were talking in the area of seven years. Now that theyve got the more they can narrow down the search area and keep that environment quiet, not run any sonars for many additional ships, try to minimize the sea traffic in the area, as quiet as they can keep that area so that they can keep listening for these potential pings from the black boxes. Thats what they really want to do to be able to narrow really narrow down that search area. Well, they seem to be on their way to doing that. Fred hegg, captain van gurley, thanks for joining me. Thank you. The developments in the search. Malaysian sources now confirm captain zahari shaw was the voice on that final communication, good night malaysian 370. Thats what he said to air traffic controllers. They also say that at one point the plane dipped between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Nic robertson is covering that part of the story from kuala lumpur. Tell us more, nic. Reporter well, what we know from our sources is that five pilots in Malaysian Airlines were played recordings from the cockpit to the air traffic controllers. That told them who was in control of the who was speaking on the radio when it was on the ground, who was speaking on the radio when it was in the air. These five pilots familiar, were told, with both the first officer and the captain on board flight 370, and were told that they were able to identify the first officer as speaking on the radio when it was on the ground and the captain, captain zahari, speaking on the radio when the plane was in the air, which would imply, through normal standard operating procedures, that while the plane was in the air, while it was flying, that the copilot, the first officer, would have been flying the aircraft. What investigators have been trying to figure out was who made that final communication, good night malaysian 370. We understand that was the captain, an important piece of information for investigators. Important also as they analyze whats happened with this flight. The dipping, were told that it dropped altitude from a normal cruising ate tltitude from 4,00 5,000 feet above sea level. That was after it crossed the peninsula. It was from military radar data that it disappeared from military radar before coming up and reappearing again and then taking off around the coast of indonesia and then off into the south indian ocean. So all of this piecing together a picture, why did it dip in altitude . One assessment is possibly because it was crossing over what is a busy highway of flights going from asia to india and onwards to europe, carol. Interesting developments. Nic robertson reporting live from kuala lumpur. So lets talk about those developments. For that i want to bring in tom fuentes, a cnn Law Enforcement analyst and former assistant director. Good morning, tom. Good morning. Lets first talk about the captain making that last transmission to air traffic controllers. In your mind as an investigator, how much does that matter . Well, i think normally, you know, it would matter a little, but may not matter a lot. I think whats more important is the whole stream of transmissions from the beginning, who was flying the plane, who was doing the radio work. You know, and whether there was stress in their voice and all of that. I think that, you know, i know that intense analysis is being done on the voice transmissions and recordings. I would like to see the official results of that come out. I know the sources are supposed to be very good, and that may be fine, but i would like to see the official results of the intensive investigation thats going on with that. So they can use some kind of device to detect stress in someones voice. Thats what youre talking about. Well, there are applications and analytical tools to do that. You know, theres some debate as to their reliability based on that these are short burst transmissions. Theyre not long conversations. Making it harder to determine the patterns of speech and the frequencies of the voice and that type of information. So you have short transmissions. Sometimes garbled transmissions depending on the quality of the radio transmission and the quality of the recordings. Again, still work being done on that. Is that work being done in the United States at all that you know of . Well, right now they dont want to officially say. They dont want it released exactly how that work is being done. I understand. Okay, so when you put things together, right and im theorizing here, ill just come out and say it because i am why not . Everybody is. I know, youre right. Just be honest about it, right . Right. So the pilot made that last transmission to air traffic controllers. The plane made that mysterious left turn. Supposedly it skirted around indonesia with we now know from sources that the plane dipped for some reason to 5,000 feet. And one of the theories associated with that is it was skirting radar again. So when you put all of those things together, it seem s someone on board that plane was deliberately making the plane do those things, but does that necessarily lead to something criminal or nefarious . Well, i mean, all along in how youve described that, its if this happened, if that happened. And also the results of the analysis that they think the plane dipped down to 5,000 feet, not because the radar detected it going to 5,000, but because they lost it for a period of time. Now, weve heard so many variations for 35 days of difficulties and analyzing the radar and figuring out what they actually have or had at the time on their radar screens. Suddenly theyre going to be able to make a determination that it, on purpose, went down to 5,000, then came back up to altitude to be reacquired by their radar. Then, you know, when they said that it appeared to go around indonesia, around the island of sumatra, the northernmost island, that it had to be first to avoid radar, then two days later, it had to be to avoid crowded airspace, which it is crowded airspace in the middle of the night there. So i would be you know, these are these are kind of guesses. They are guesses at what the motive was to do various things based on what i think has been often inaccurate analysis of what the plane did. Right. Our best bet is to recover those black boxes, right, to see whats on them. Then well know. The flight data recorder will at least say whether the plane went up, down, left, right, sideways, turned back flips, whatever. That will be determined. Whether it went around indonesia or went across the island of sumatra without their noticing it or they dont want to admit they didnt notice it, that will be determined by the flight data recorder. There is a lot of information that will verify at least what direction altitude heading speed the airplane was flying at. It wont tell you why, but it will tell you what it was doing. Tom fuentes, thanks, as usual. Thank you, carol. Still to come on the newsroom, as investigators look at the data from those sonar buoys, well take a closer look how that will help direct the investigation. Well talk about that next. Welcome back to our special coverage in the search for Malaysia Flight 370. There are a number of new developments unfolding right now. Sources telling us that when that plane went off radar, it may have plunged in altitude to between 4,000 and 5,000 feet. Also significant this morning, search crews have discovered a possible new signal which brings the total number of signals detected in that specific area in the indian ocean to five. And that, of course, is certainly raising hopes that investigators may be closing in on those black boxes. For more, lets bring in mary schiavo and former Inspector General at the department of transportation. She is live in charleston, south carolina. David seucy is a cnn safety analyst. Welcome to both of you. Thank you. So mary, lets talk about this drop in altitude because now sources are telling us that for some reason, the plane dropped to 5,000 feet. Why would a pilot do that . Well, there are many reasons why you might want a depressurization. Youve got to get below 10,000 people so people can breathe. And two, youd want to get out of the commercial traffic lanes which are for commercial passenger jets, 18,000 feet and above. If you didnt have a transponder which means you have no Collision Avoidance system, and you could not communicate with air traffic control. However, as david mentioned earlier in the hour, and he makes a great point, you dont just go from 35,000 feet like a helicopter and drop down to 5,000 feet. You have to descend and then turn around and climb again. So we want more information from the investigators and the radar people, did they just see it on radar and then didnt see it on radar, so they assume it descended . Or did they see the descent path . That would be interesting to know. We dont know that. We dont know so many things. So david, in your mind, because investigators in malaysia say all of these things were deliberate acts. And if they did indeed drop to 5,000 feet, maybe it wasnt because of mechanical failure. I dont know. What do you think . Well, if a deliberate act is to have a thunderstorm come through and make it lose the radar signal, then i guess theyre right. But theres a lot of reasons it could have come off radar. And to make the assumption that because it went off of radar for 120 miles, which at that speed they were going, at that altitude, it would have had to be about 280 knots, which is about five miles or five minutes per excuse me well, at any rate, 120 it would be about 24 minutes is how long it would have been at that altitude. And so for 24 minutes, a lot of things could have happened to have it go off of that radar for 24 minutes. Im still not convinced that it was actually actually at that altitude. Theyre making conclusions, or we dont have enough information and they do. Mary, malaysian officials are now admitting that they did send planes out to try to look for flight 370 when it disappeared from the radar, but im not clear on how long that search lasted or why they turned around. Right. What do you make of that . Well, and the response seemed to be too little, too late. They sent them out after they had been alerted that the plane had already gone missing instead of when the plane had lost communication. So at the time they were alerted that it had gone missing, you know, they didnt know where the plane was. Apparently they must have headed, you know, west to look for it, but then they said that they never intercepted it. Apparently that response just came too late to do anything. And just hearing about it now is also rather interesting. Yes. That is the most interesting part, right, david . Like why didnt they tell us this 34 days ago . Yeah. And whats interesting to me about that is they had some intelligence at that point, too, because when they dispatched these aircraft, they didnt dispatch the military attack airplanes, which could have downed an aircraft if they were suspicious or trying to protect their airspace. Thats not what they sent. They sent search airplanes out. That tells you that not only did they know the area that it went, so they obviously had radar or some kind of information saying the aircraft went that direction, that it took off if in the direction towards beijing, thats interesting. Then they also knew that it wasnt an invasion of the airspace. They knew it was a search. Like mary said, it was too little, too late. Its interesting to me they knew exactly what they were doing, where they went. They went back to the original area and did the search there. Not where they were at with those airplanes. Mary schiavo, david, thank you so much. A Pennsylvania Community looks for answers after a stabbing spree at a local high school. Alex rival will be prosecuted as an adult on a laundry list of charges. He faces four counts of attempted murder, one for each person critically injured. The total number of victims reflected in the 21 counts of aggravated assault. Hes also charged with possession of a weapon on school property. All right, were going to go to the forbes Regional Hospital now. Theres a press conference starting. Some of the victims from that stabbing are being treated here. We expect one of the wounded students to speak soon. His names brett hurt. Hell be talking with his mother, amanda. But lets listen to the doctor right now. For our hospital as it was a shift change time. And so we had double staff. We had three trauma surgeons here. We had about five anesthesiologists to care for them as they arrived. The first three patients that arrived were taken to the operating room. The first in about five minutes. The second in about ten minutes, and the second and the third one about 30 minutes later because we were making sure that we didnt have yet a more critical patient showing up in the interim. These three patients are still in the icu today. Two of them remain on ventilators. One of them is doing fine and conversant, no longer needing the support of a ventilator. Of the additional four patients that we received from the scene, two of those are going home today. And the other two will likely go home sometime over the weekend. Theyre all doing well. So i think with that Opening Statement on whats going on, ill stop at this point. You have one thats also in critical . How is that patient doing . We have two of our icu patients have planned additional surgeries. So at the end of their operations yesterday, they were planned to return to the operating room. And over the course of the next three days, they will both be returned to the operating room at least once. So thats a reality of trauma surgery today is that we stopped the operation at a point when the patient either being abouts cold, has problems with coagulation, and we think its better to stop and come back another day. Another reason is to take a look at the injuries and make sure everything is healing as we expect. Doctor, can you say whether the wounds in the patients show a sign of some kind of strug snl. Theres no way to tell. In trauma surgery, we realize that we dont know the position of the patient when they were stabbed. Usually somebody doesnt stand still in that type of an episode because its not always a surprise that somebody is has been stabbed. Although i do understand for some of the victims, yesterday they were unaware that this was going on, and they were surprised. So in the patients that we received, these patients each had a stab wound that looked like it was more of a surprise than any kind of a struggle. What tells you that, sir . It looked like a surprise . Well, usually if its a defensive wound, people would use their arms to try to fend off somebody with a knife. And our patients the seven patients we received all had stab wounds to their trunk. They had stab wounds to their chest, abdomen and back. Well hear from brett. I didnt really know what was going on at the time because i was walking down the hallway with a friend of mine. Gracie evans. And then it just all, like, hit. She was screaming. I was just standing there. Everything just went like i didnt even know what was going on. I was just so surprised, i could barely move because i got stabbed in the back. I had to have help going to the next room and her putting pressure on my wound to make sure i didnt bleed out. What was going through your mind . What was going through my mind . Will i survive, or will i die . It sounds like your friend saved your life. Yeah. Yeah, she saved my life. How do you feel now . In pain, but im healing slowly but surely. Do you expect to go home soon . Yeah. Over the weekend, or have the doctors told you when you can go home . They said it depends on how i do today. They said i might go home today. [ inaudible ]. Repeat . What was your injuries . I got stabbed in the back. Stabbed in the back and a bruised lung. What do you remember seeing . What were your eyes telling you when this was all happening . It was all kind of like a blur. The only thing i remember is messing around with gracie and, like, bumping her out of the way because usually i just goof off in the morning just a little bit and be playful. The next thing i know, the kid runs by and hits me in the back. Thats when everything just went into straight chaos. They said that you possibly saved her from getting stabbed. Do you remember pushing her out of the way when you saw him . Yeah. Can you describe that . It happened so fast, its kind of hard to describe. Did you know the assailant at all before this . I had met him a couple times but never really talked to him. What kind of reputation does alex have in school . I dont know his reputation. But after today, hes going to have a bad one. Do you plan to get back on the Playing Field . Can you repeat that . Do you play any sports . I used to, but with me working, i kind of just stopped playing sports. I just hit the weight room there and again. He does things outside of the school. Youth group with some friends. He gets into p. T. Training, which is part of a friends military kind of weightlifting and physical training stuff that he does outside of the school. But nothing in the school. How many students were in the hallway . Were there scores of people . Is that why he was able to stab so many . There were so many people in the hallways. When someone said they saw blood or something, everyone just started screaming. But when i got hit, everyone noticed and just started running in different directions. Gracie was screaming and asking me if i was all right. I was trying to keep pressure on my back and take me into a safe room. So he was running down the hallway just hitting everybody yeah. At random . At random. Were you in the part of the hallway i was hit i was hit the third person or the fourth person to get hit. Can you talk about what it means to have brett here safe and sound . To know that my son made it and to know that so far every parent could be blessed to know that their child is still here, to me thats a godsend. It really is. When my daughter called me at work yesterday, freaking out, and told me that my son was on the list of victims, i dropped. I dont think any parent in the world would ever want to go through that kind of agony and for all the students parents who are in the hospital with their children right now. I send my condolences, and i understand your pain. Mom, do you have anything to say to gracie . Ive already hugged her and kissed her. I have told her thank you. And there is nothing in the world that i can do for that girl to thank her for what she has done. We owe her a lot. You said she saved her life. If not for that playful moment in the hallway, more people would have been hurt. You think that saved her . Yeah. I think the way she tells it is that you threw your body in front of her and that you saved her life. Thats what she told us this morning on the today show. Amanda, how do handle that, knowing that he saved her life . I think for any mother, im proud of her as much as i am proud of my own son. For what achievements he wants to make and for every hardship we have gone through in our lives, im proud of him. Amanda, what do you think of alex . In all honesty, any child that is able to do Something Like that, i feel that it is not only his peers, his family, but it is the school who needs to look and say what have we done to alienate this child for him to do such a gruesome thing. And i hope that his family can find peace, and i hope this child can find peace in some way and come out and show his true feelings on why he did what he did. Do you have any reason to think that he was alienated or bullied . I think in this time, in this age that we live in, in all honesty, i think theres more bullying than what anybody wants to say. And i honestly feel that some students, they have a tendency of some shyness, more than other students do. You have a group of children in the world that are fun, outgoing, loving, charming. You have other kids that are just solid, you know, individuals and some that are just shy and dont know how to handle society. And its in that way that we need to look and say how are our children coping with social skills these days . How are they with other children . How are they being tested in the world for negative or positive ways . And we need to Start Testing that now. Before it goes any further than what it has. Can i ask, are you anxious to get back to school to be with your friends . Im not sure im not sure i can go to school at this point in time. I think if i walked in there, i might just freeze and wouldnt be able to move. I mean, i just need time to just cope. I think all of us who got injured in the accident need time to cope. Were all lucky to still be alive. Even people that are in critical right now. Right now theyre lucky. Were pretty much blessed. Did the doctors tell you that you have any limitations . It sounds like youre an athlete, a weight lifter and all that. Are you hopeful that youll be able to get back to where you were . Sooner or later, i wish i can, but that all comes with time and how long it will take for me to heal. Brett, were you able to defend yourself at all . No. It happened from behind. I didnt even he was running up the hallway and hit me on the way, and i didnt even know what happened. I just kind of froze right there on the spot. At that point was the fire alarm going off . Like, i think im not totally sure. There are some kids who got threatening phone calls the night before the incident. Were you one of them, or do you know any of the kids who did . No. I had no. Huhuh. Do you know if the first stabbing was in a classroom or in the hallway . You were in the hallway, right . I was in the hallway. Do you know if the kid went into classrooms . There are some reports that he went into classrooms. I was told he started from, like, the end of the hallway where we were at and then walked his way up and went into a couple classrooms or something. Thats what i was told, so im not totally sure. Brett, how do you feel about alex . I feel that he has some issues he needs to work out. He made a really bad decision which took him down a path that i dont think he should have took went down. I think he could have chosen a different path to take, because everyone has more than one road to take in life. You choose which path you want to take, and that path will lead you on to your consequences later in the future. Everyone has those roads. Everyone has a choice. Everyone can make the right or wrong decision. Do you think he was alienated or bullied in school . I only met him a couple times, so i dont know. Brett, prom season is coming up. You got plans . Oh, yeah. We found out two days before the incident his girlfriend, beth, she goes to a Different School. She is still in hopes that he is going to be healed up enough, and so is he. He said he plans on dancing. I plan on it. You mentioned your daughter. Was she at the school as well, or was she at a Different School . My daughter is in the high school as well. Shes a freshman. Was she in the hallway . She was down the hallway coming out. She was in the library. Apparently whenever she came out is after the fire alarm went off. Did she tell you what she experienced . She said she saw blood. She said she saw a student with a stab wound in the stomach. And she basically went into shock after that. How is she doing now . Shes with a friend. Im very grateful for her friend, nolan, whos been with her and who stayed with her the whole time at this point. So i would imagine youre going to keep your kids out of school for a home at home to heal . For a little bit, and i plan on getting back into some therapy. Chelsea, shes in therapy right now to help her out. Out of respect one second. Brett, we appreciate your courage. Hes displayed maturity beyond his years. And i think that what we need to do for brett, as his physicians, is limit it to two more questions. And really be respectful of brett and his time and what hes gone through. Brett, do you forgive alex . I honestly feel that once he gets help, maybe he can forgive himself. See, maybe ive been thinking. Maybe if he had more friends or somebody to help him out or to, like, show him a different path, maybe it would have been different. Apparently he didnt have enough supports that some of the other students in the school have. And we hope that he could make amends on what hes done, and hopefully he will come out with the truth on what his display of action, what caused it. And i just hope that one day he can everyone he can i can forgive him and everyone else who got hurt can forgive him. Most of all he needs to forgive himself. Thank you very much, brett. And thank you, amanda. One comment, i have been in touch with the superintendent of schools for franklin regional, gennaro. We spoke this morning about really we could see the trauma that brett has experienced. And we know that he and the other students are going to need some resources to reach out to. So when anything bad happens, theres so much good that comes out in our community. And we have numerous counselors and crisis programs, a lot of people reaching out to us. What we do need to do is manage that. And working with the superintendent of school, were going to put the resources we have together through the Allegheny Health network. We do have an adolescent trauma posttraumatic syndrome program, and were going to match that to get with some of the other resources we have in our communities, in our churches, in our schools. All right. Were going to pull away. But what a touching News Conference this was. That high school student, brett hurt, who was stabbed in the back and his mother. It was just it was just truly amazing. What a wonderful young man. Cnns omar is following the story at the high school. Im also joined by Steven Berkowitz at the penn center for youth and family trauma response. Id like to start with you, doctor. This young man seems so centered. He brought up often his friend, gracie. And i want to put up a picture of gracie because both of them credit the other with saving their lives, right . Brett was saying he was standing in the hall, and he was playfully pushing gracie and then suddenly he was stabbed in the back. She applied pressure to his wound. And as he put it, she stopped him from bleeding out. These kids seem so selfpossessed, dont they . Doctor. Yes. I think its hard to know at this particular point in time. They certainly seem very mature and very ready to be able to articulate whats going on for them. But i think as you heard from him, you know, hes still in shock. He still feels very uneasy. He mentioned that he didnt think he could enter the School Without freezing. As articulate as he is, i would imagine that hes suffering from a great deal of, you know, posttraumatic stress symptoms to this point. Absolutely. And miguel, youre covering the suspect in this case, alex. And you heard brett say that he chose the wrong path. He hopes that everybody could find it in themselves to forgive him. He said he didnt know him. He knew of him. Some students said he was shy. But his lawyer appeared on new day this morning and said he was your typical, average kid. He wasnt a loner. He had a good family. What have you found out about him . Reporter well, look. During his News Conference wait. Miguel . Reporter this is a lot of ordinary people trying to make sense of an extraordinary situation here. We hear two sort of lines for this individual. Essentially that he was shy. Some of them saying he was shy to the point of being a nonentity. One person who claims to know him quite well, she said that he was kind of a creep oftentimes. So we hear sort of different takes on this individual. All of them along that same vein of being very much a loner, very much by himself, but several students we talked to say he was always nice when i talked to him. He was always fine. Others saying he had a somewhat darker side. Thats what police are trying to do now. They have computer, they have cell phones, parents computers as well. The fbi spent a long while at his house yesterday. The school is still on shutdown and wont be opened up till monday. All of these data points of information trying to come together to paint a picture, to understand why this kid did what he did. Carol . Dr. Berkowitz, we know that when he entered the school that morning, he was dressed all in black. We know he had remembarmed hims with two kitchen knives, and he started very early in the morning when the students are in the hallway. And as you heard from brett, he just walked up and ran up to students and stabbed them. I mean, what does that say about this kid in your mind . Well, its hard to speculate. I think its important that there is forensic, psychological evaluation to figure out who this child is, what his background is. But i think its really problematic to speculate until we know more. There could be a range of issues and concerns that went missed. So i think we just have to wait and see. And to find out more about this particular boy and what motivated him to do such a horrific thing. We know a few more thing and miguel, hopefully you can help me with this we know he had a relatively small social media presence. Did he own a cell phone . Im not even sure if he did. What have you found out . Reporter police tell us this morning that they did seize a cell phone from him. They were also at the parents house. The fbi said that they took a laptop computer that belonged to him yesterday morning. Fbi was then at his house yesterday afternoon. They brought some of those big boxy computers out later in the afternoon. We suspect that those were probably belonged to the family. Probably to the parents. So they wanted those as well. The parents, we understand, are cooperati cooperating. The father just as shocked as everybody else is by this. The cell phone police say that they seized, its not clear if they took only his cell phone or his parents cell phones as well. But they want to paint as broad a picture as possible as to what this kid was up to in the day, weeks, hours leading up to this. Even as far as facebook is concerned, miguel, he had a Facebook Page, but there wasnt much on it. Reporter that is consistent with everything we hear about him at school. That this is a very quiet guy. One person said that he sat at the back of the at the rear of the classroom all the time, that he didnt really engage others unless hes engaged himself. You look at the photo of him that we have versus the picture of him in the walk that he did from the Police Station into the police car yesterday while he was in the road. He looks tiny. He looks 12, not 16 years old. The photograph that we have makes him look like a much more mature kid. He looks like a very, very young, very small kid. And it is not very clear at the moment what is going on what was going on in his head. We certainly have two slightly divergent pictures of him. One quiet and shy and kind. The other perhaps a little creepy. Carol sf. And yet dr. Berkowitz, when you take a look at what happened yesterday, it took four men, four grown men, to subdue him, to allegedly disarm him. Reporter well, actually, and one of them was a woman. An assistant principal jumped on him initially. A female assistant principal jumped on him to subdue him. Then a Security Officer was able to secure him and handcuff him. He said to those officers at that time, those individuals at that time, that he just wanted to die. So something clearly was going on much darker than anybody understood about this kid. And seemingly even more than the parents understood from everything we know right now, carol. Dr. Berkowitberkowitz, you wg to say . I was going to say that in these situations when you start to get that adrenaline rush and youre really amped up, that people can often be much stronger than they should be under normal circumstances. You talk to Law Enforcement. You know, theyre often amazed by how strong individuals can be under certain situations such as this. And so i imagine this boy was, you know, quite driven and probably, you know, very hard to contain and control. Absolutely. Well, we do know that police plan to charge him as an adult. The investigation goes on. Miguel marquez, dr. Steven berkowitz, thanks so much. Ill be right back. I tell people its for the climate. The conditions in new york state are great for business. Norfolk southern whats your function . Helping this big country move ahead as one Norfolk Southern hows that function . President Lyndon Baynes Johnson, he was probably the last person some would expect to push for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But while he was known for getting what he wanted politically, those who knew him say his fight was far from political gamesmanship. Suzanne malveaux has more for you. Reporter on the surface, Lyndon Baynes Johnson was one of the most unlikely champions of civil rights. You had to like him. I mean, he was a big, lovable texan. Even though he made you feel comfortable, he made you feel uncomfortable. Hed look down on you, and hed talk with you very intensely. And you couldnt say much to him. Reporter it was famously called the johnson treatment. Lbjs power as well as his quirks were notorious. As depicted by this scene from lee daniels movie the butler. I want yall to get on the phone and call the naacp. His sweepeechwriter, goodwin. He also robertedly swore like a sailor and occasionally used the n word. Back then it was part of our vernacular, too. Honestly. Language with Martin Luther king was always respectful. Reporter but early in johnsons political career, he was no Civil Rights Activist. Casting votes against the legislation. When he was a senator from texas, he really couldnt follow up that much because otherwise he would have lost his seat. Reporter so what was the driving force behind this momentous moment . Many look to johnsons childhood in texas. Where he grew up in a small farmhouse as the eldest of pofi. He had been poor. Johnson had felt guilty enough and had had enough pain about his own hardship and poverty as a texas schoolteacher. Reporter as president , he was a shrewd dealmaker and politician, drawing on his experience in congress. He had lived and breathed and been through 1,000 battles with these guys. There was almost nobody in the house or the senate that he had not done a favor for. Reporter johnson had a reputation for his lust of power and control. But those who knew him say his fight for civil rights was not politically driven. So at 63 when jfk is killed, he knows hes going to have to run for election in 64. By going all out for civil rights, that was a brave thing. Well, i think it had to be sincere. Because there would have been it would have been too easy for him to get out of it. It was almost impossible to do. Reporter and carol, another thing that ambassador young told me is he really thinks the Civil Rights Act would not have been passed if it had not been for lbj, that there is no other person who had that kind of personality who would have been able to push it through. Clearly this was a time, a different relationship with congress. He had a whole movement that was behind him essentially, but he did have that personality that was larger than life. And thats something that were probably going to hear later today. As you know, carol, weve been following this the last three days. Four u. S. President s at the lbj library to celebrate 50 years from the Civil Rights Act, but also to talk about how this president , this congress and even the people, the American People themselves, can get together and get something done in washington, maybe some big things to improve our community. I was just going to ask you, is there any lbj today in your mind . Reporter you know, its funny because nobody nobody says that theres an lbj that comes close, but i will tell that you andrew young said he thought the one person that was most similar to lbj would be hillary clinton. That shes the one person that has the kind of experience and the kind of relationships with members of congress on both sides of the aisle that would be able to have some heft and push forward some legislation if she got in office. So well see if that happens, but that was something that andrew young brought up. Doris Kerns Goodwin taught its not surprising, but well see. Goodwin says hey, its all about the relationships. Make those relationships happen. People theyd to sit down and talk to each other, even if they disagree. Carol . Suzanne malveaux, many thanks. Thank you for joining me today. Im carol costello. The story is changing. Officials now say
