Confirmed dead after a powerful 6. 8 earthquake that struck last night. More than 14,000 people excuse me, 1,400 people are in Critical Condition. That number could go higher as well. We see a rescue team pull a woman from the rubble. As searches continue, the death toll is expected to climb even higher. Now from marrakech, weve been checking in over the last couple hours. What are you looking at now . Reporter well, jim, this is a home. A Residential Home in the ancient old city of marrakech. You can see how the vibrations, this massive earthquake, 6. 8 on the richter scale, pulled away the side of the building. Were about in a 100meter block from the previous locations that we had a look at. This is just yet another sign. You can see the Building Materials here. Ironically, they may be more robust than some modern materials but that hasnt been the case in the country side where villages have been reduced to the sort of rubble you can see on the screen now, except that is across an immense scale. Whereas here in marrakech, there are 13 dead, now 2,000 dead across the country. Most are in the foot hills of the atlas mountains. The epicenter is about 45 miles from where i am in marrakech. The authorities, the king has declared a threeday period of national mourning. Hes immobilized all the Emergency Services and the national army, air force and navy to get the helicopters out into those remote areas. It is in those areas where clearly the need is greatest, jim. And sam, what about these aftershocks . Are you feeling those . What kind of potential harm might those aftershocks carry should they continue . Reporter well, thank god we are not feeling them here in marrakech. There have been several elsewhere. More localized aftershocks that have been felt. Four or five at least in the last 24 hours. Its about 24 hours since the earthquake struck. If, for example, an aftershock were to hit, in all probability a good chunk of this building would fall down into the street. This is a very tightly packed area, medina. And that is a pattern repeated in any of the buildings damaged in this quake that are vulnerable to the tremors, even on a relatively light scale. Even rain could bring a lot of these buildings crashing down. As a result of that, the authorities here evacuated at least 30 , were told by some locals, of tourists. Possibly more. I have to say medina is just a ghost town now, just onlookers and people keeping an eye on their home. This would be absolutely teeming streets. Theyre all out sleeping in parks, trying to stay away from building thats might be vulnerable to those aftershocks. All right. Sam kiley, stay safe. We really appreciate it. Joining us now, carmen moreno, a humanitarian worker vacationing in morocco. Thank you very much for joining us. First off, what did you go through when this earthquake struck . Thanks for having me. This is just crazy. I just, the previous that happened earlier this year in syria, i was working for that and i was taking a break, coming on vacations with may brother and friends and all of a sudden, we were arriving at the airport and we felt this, and at the beginning, i didnt think it was an earthquake. I thought maybe it is just a Plane Crashing or something because we were at the parking lot of the airport in open space, thank god. Thats why we were lucky and safe. Then i heard this people screaming and the lights were off inside the infrastructure of the airport and the building. I saw this earlier and i realized it was an earthquake but honestly, i didnt think it was this hard, this high magnitude. We were in open space. We did not have any building nearby. And i said okay. Its an earthquake but nothing compared to what i experienced last february. And then we were just renting our car. We finished renting the car. We went on the street. I was driving, i thought, okay, that was just the moment. Nothing else. Then we see people going crazy, ambulances, everyone on the streets. And then i realized, okay, this is more serious than i thought what do you when a earthquake of their magnitude. Everyone should get out on the street, out of the houses. Thats what we did as well and we spent the night on the streets without knowing what happened. With rumors and everything. What are you seeing when you look around . Is it just devastation everywhere . What do you see when you walk around marrakech after this earthquake . So we saw some damages here in medina but we are staying outside. I think most damages are in the more humble neighborhoods where the infrastructures are not prepared for this kind of catastrophe. So hear you can see some damages. Of course, they are serious. I think the worst is outside this part. In the main square, there is a small mosque, very famous as well. It was very damaged. After i saw in syria, i didnt see the real serious damages. I think they are in this other outskirts of the city. But i can see people devastated. This is not about rubble. If it is rubble, they can be moved. Quick or easy but by my experience, i believe that the real longterm problems, the most difficult rubbles to remove are of the psychological ones, and people are panicking and they are tear fade. Im sure people are very afraid right now. Especially after these aftershocks. We were just showing some video a few moments ago of what it looked like when all of this hit. In addition to that, we have images of people, it looks like theyre just living on the street now. Because they cant go back home. Maybe it is unsafe to go to the neighborhood where theyre from. Are you seeing that as well . People are on the streets. Thats all they can do now. Yes, of course. This is very usual and normal as well. And the worst is yet to come because we dont know what can happen. Maybe there wont be any more tremors. But it is collapsing. We need engineers and specialists to check the building and to measure the impact. Im not sure they have the capacity, especially in this poor neighborhoods. So it is really risky that they go back home and we can expect more casualties like this so thats why people are staying on the streets. Either they cannot come back or lose everything, but even if their homes are still there and not demolished, not devastated by this, it is too risky to come back. So i think it is really terrifying. It is something that we cannot control, right . So people are very confused. They dont know what to do. And yeah. Its really traumatic. It must be such a scary situation. We heard from sam kiley that while there is a lot of devastation in marrakech, it is very likely that there is even more devastation outside of marrakech in the mountains and so on. Are you hearing anything from people as to how bad things might be when you get outside of marrakech . When you move into more remote areas . Well, i dont know much, honestly, about this. They told me it is not very safe to take the roads through the mountain. I think maybe we dont have all the information here. As you said, this place is really remote. So i think maybe there are more damages than we know or think. In our case we are trying to move from marrakech as soon as possible and move to a more safe area. Yeah. We will see. What are you hearing about the airport . The airport, i didnt hear anything. So we just saw the lights going off. The building was fine. We didnt see any crashes or anything. And in a matter of minutes, we were not inside. We just hear all the people screaming and really terrified. And then we left as soon as possible. I didnt hear any news about this or any canceled flights. So i think this kind of buildings are more prepared for this kind of disaster than small houses made of clay or this precarious material that they used in these neighborhoods. Absolutely. Carmen moreno, thank you very much for your time. Please stay safe and if you can, stay in touch with us. We really appreciate your help. Thank you so much. The Football Game between iowa and iowa state offering a big trump for the trump and desantis campaigns. This is some turnout. I guess the youth likes trump. Former President Trump was basking in his iowa league rubbing shoulders. Meanwhile, his closest competitor, Governor Ron Desantis of florida, had this to say. I would imagine were hearing people say, were supporting you. Eyians dont want it to be about the issue. They want it to be with the future of the country. Joining us from the campaign trail, one of the republican candidates vying to become the gop candidate for president. Thank you for joining us. We appreciate it. How do you catch up to trump and desantis at this point . Whats your game plan . Well, the game plan is to spend some time in the important states, continue to raise money to get resources. Heres one of the things that were learning. When people hear the message that im talking about how we have to be prepared for a nuclear war with china. How we have to be ready for an economy that deals with new technologies like ai, World Class Education for our kids regardless of where they live, they appreciate that. I have to increase my megaphone to get that message out. We have several weeks before early voting starts and people recognize and are looking for something different. Let me get your reaction to comments trump made last night during a apache in south dakota. I want to ask you if this sounds familiar in terms of what he said last night and what he said previously. You have to get out and you have to fight like hell because these are dirty players, and what we have to do is we have to take back our country. We have, we fight, we fight like hell, if you dont fight like hell, you wont have a country anymore. Youre on a live feed with us so maybe you couldnt see a monitor, to see that last clip. The first clip was last night in south dakota. The second clip was from january 6th. Trump is still using some of the same language he was using on january 6th, telling people to fight like hell and so on. Does that disturb you . Of course. And the bottom line is this. Donald trump is a proven loser. He hasnt won an election since 2016. It is that kind of rhetoric that his people dont want to see anymore. Our neighbors are not our enemies. Our neighbors are our fellow americans that we happen to disagree with at times. And people do not want to see that kind of rhetoric. Yes, donald trump is leading in the polls. But polls are a snap shot in time and people want to see someone who is talking about the future who is talking about how we will solve these complex challenges. How will we actually secure our border, deal with things like fentanyl. Last year, 109,000 people died from drug overdoses. Theres more the federal government should be doing to be protecting us. These are the people that people want to hear about. When they start paying more attention to the elections coming up, thats what theyll want to see. Not the same hateful rhetoric that weve seen coming out of this president for years now. Are you getting any sense from talking to people in iowa that theyre sick of that kind of stuff . It sounds like theyre eating it up. You might say folks are tired of hearing of this and they want to hear a positive message and hear different stuff but trump has this commanding lead in iowa. It sounds like this is what they want to hear. Well, hes talking about how he had to fight like hell because hes worried about someone catching up to him in some of these early states. Hes worried about the impact that his baggage and his legal cases will potentially have on him. Hes worried that some of his coconspirators and people naming these cases will turn on him and well see new evidence come out. And heres what happens. When im out here on the stump, people hear me, folks wearing trump hats and trump shirts with his mug shot on the shirt come up and say, hey, we really appreciate the things youre talking about. We havent heard that. This is a great idea. These are the kinds of things that need to happen. So for someone like me, i just need to be able to continue to magnify that message. So if viewers want to help, go to hurt. Com tonight and donate at least 1 to start getting this message out and have someone not afraid to call donald trump what he is, but also is articulating a vision for the future. And congressman, recently warned your republican rivals that, quote, kissing trumps butt wont help beat him for the nomination. But weve seen candidates go from being long shots, pulling to fourth or even third after molding himself in the image of the former president. Do you want to reconsider what you think might be the best approach here . Absolutely not. What we need is more people that are sick and tired of this kind of thing to get ready to vote in primaries. Only 23 of americans vote in primaries. About 67 vote in general elections. So that 40 plus in the middle that havent done it, if youre sick and tired of your options, if you do not want a rematch from hell between joe biden and donald trump, now is the chance to change that tide. Those are the folks that need to get activated and that candidates need to be talking to. If youre trying to be a Lounge Act Version of donald trump, its not going to win. And by the way, if the gop wants to win and beat joe biden in november, then we have to put somebody up here who can actually win and get independents and democrats to vote for somebody other than joe biden. And how long are you committed to staying in this race if you dont make future debates . Might that be something that will make you consider or reconsider what your options are . What is your thinking on that . My focus is obviously the next debate and hitting those requirements. Ive hit the Polling Requirements in New Hampshire. Im going to cross that threshold for the donors soon. Were working on hitting the same Polling Requirements in eye wafrlt i think chris sununu, governor of New Hampshire said a few months back that by winter, if theres no pathway to success, people need to start focusing on how do we coalesce behind someone in order to beat donald trump . I think that logic makes sense. And i know one of the things youre trying to bring to the voters is a focus on your foreign policy, National Security credentials. Lets talk about what is happening in the world. Just this past week, reports indicating that Vladimir Putin and kim jongun are ramping up their relationship with the north Korean Leader possibly making a trip to russia soon possibly supplying moscow with weapons for its war in ukrain
