ahead on "cnn newsroom," ford and general motors announce job cuts just days a of the autoworkers union went on strike, how a lengthy strike will impact the auto industry. plus, gop presidential hopefuls descend on iowa stumping for votes. the only one who didn't show is donald trump. downed trees and power lines is part of what tropical lee left behind. no breakthrough but reasonably productive discussions at least with ford, that's on how the united auto workers are describing labor talks on day two of its strikes. striking union workers picketed outside the ford assembly plant. ford says the strike is causing a lack of parts and 2600 uaw members will be laid off due to the walkout. the union and ford, general motors and stellantis is far apart on benefits. now the strike is putting president biden in a tough position and it could get even more difficult for him if it goes on for a long time. cnn's priscilla alvarez explains. >> reporter: president joe biden weighed in on the auto workers strike on friday as he faces the biggest labor crisis of his presidency so far. in his remarks he provided an implicit endorsement of the benefits. >> i appreciate the parties have been working around the clock. when i first called them on the very first day of the negotiations i said please stay at the table as long as you can, we'll work this out. the companies have made some significant offers. i believe it should go further with record contract. record corporate profits which they have should be shared with record contract. >> reporter: he casts s him as e most pro-union president. the destabilizing risk of an auto manufacturing shutdown. leading up to the strike president and white house officials have been closely monitoring negotiations and on friday the president announced he would deploy his senior adviser sperling to act as the go-between in these talks. they're watching it closely and what it mean for the economy moving forward. priscilla alvarez, cnn, traveling with the president. u.s. republican presidential hopefuls are in iowa showing the influence that state yields early in the presidential cycle. they addressed the faith and freedom coalition saturday four months ahead of the first votes being cast in 2024 primary contests. all the candidates except for former president donald trump. he's so confident in his poll numbers that he didn't show up. here's what some are saying. >> in this day and age when you do anything that's worth anything, they are going to come at you. they're going sling arrows at you, they're going to smear you and lie about you, the question is, do you have the fortitude to stand in the cauldron and hold your ground and stand firm? that's what we do in covid when we stood up against covid. >> i would put the target on the back of the teacher yuan owens and bareak their backs. they're failing them in schools. >> my goal is how do we save as many babies as possible and support as many moms as possible. jeff zeleny brings us the latest from iowa. >> reporter: with four months remaining before the republican caucus the field of republican candidates gathered in iowa to campaign over the weekend. they spoke at a dinner saturday night in des moines, reaching out to evangelical voters. of course former president donald trump who's leading the race wasn't on hand. his rivals were. former vice president mike pence tried to take aim at president biden and the impeachment inquiry in the house. >> i don't want to jump to conclusions about this, where there's smoke there's usually fire in washington, d.c. and the american people deserve the facts and i'm going to be out there championing and defending house republicans as they bring the facts to the american people and hold joe biden and his family accountable. >> reporter: the criticism of president biden is one thing candidates could agree there, there were differences on abortions and blocking nominations. south carolina tim scott trying to reach out to these evangelical voters. donald trump is still in command of this contest. the question is, has the iowa caucuses become a race for number two or could one of these rivals catch him by january 15th. jeff zeleny, cnn, des moines. the gop handed the former president a win of sort in florida, republicans in that state just scrapped plans to make the presidential candidate to sign a loyalty pledge. trump refused a pledge to back a candidate that wasn't himself. it would have helped florida governor desantis, now banned is a major defeat for the desantis campaign but trump may soon suffer a defeat over what he can or can't say even on social media. federal prosecutors are asking for narrowly tailored gag orders. the order would prevent trump from making statements that are inflammatory or intimidating. more than 11,000 people in the libyan city of derna have been killed. the death toll will likely rise as emergency crews continue to search for the missing. so far workers have pulled dozens of bodies from the sea along derna coast. most of the victims swept away are still in the water. the task of retrieving the bodies could become even impossible without even additional resources. such a long path to recovery ahead, what's the latest? >> reporter: aid is continuing to arrive in libya from all parts of the world as survivors, there's still kind of a rescue coming. you'll find people who will still alive, so far 11,300 people have been killed according to the u.n. and in derna alone, part of the problem here, entire neighborhoods in derna were swept into the mediterranean and that's where some of the bodies are believed to remain and there were people who were killed in this catastrophic flooding that may never been found. they need more resources, as much as possible, to help here. they're appealing to african union member states to send the support that libya needs. part of the problem again here is the east/west divide if the country between the tripoli government and in the eastern part of the country including derna that's led by the rebel leader, this falls under his region. they've gotten away from their divisions and are chipping in, sending aid, donating blood. they're aware they still live if a deeply divided country. >> translator: we feel sorry for those who lost their lives and we ask god almighty that he take pity on the others. >> reporter: the u.n. estimates about 40,000 people have been displaced by this and as they're moving away from derna to find shelter elsewhere they're exposed to land mines after about a decade or more in conflict in the country. partly why there's so much division in the country. after surviving a record storm, this catastrophic flooding that killed more than 11,000 people they could risk getting exposed to land mines and other after after-effects of war this country has suffered so much. so much resources to try and rebuild. this is going to be multiple months maybe even years that people can come back here. electricity is slowly being restored along roads in moroccan atlas mountains. crews geared up to try to restore power villages where earthquake survivors have been using flashlights to see at night. the government has promised to build some 50,000 houses for those whose homes were destroyed. it could take months or years before it gets done. all right, now to post-tropical cyclone lee, it made a second landfall. just under hurricane strength the storm surge caused coastal flooding, downed trees and knocked out power. crews are making headway in restoring electricity. lee's expected to continue to weaken throughout the day. cnn meteorologist karen ma ginns is here with more. >> reporter: these coastal areas have been extremely battered. we've seen some high waves batter this region as well. power outages there as well. it may take some time for that power to be restored. in the meantime lee, most post-storm lee, hurricane strength, can category 5 when it was in the atlantic, now weakening very rapidly. we just got an update and the wind associated with lee now sitting at about 50 miles an hour or 85 kilometers per hour, and it's racing along pushing off towards the northeast, it's over prince edward island but still impacting new brunswick and the northern coast of nova scotia. it will move over newfoundland over the next 24 hours. it will increase over the next 12 hours. at about 22 miles per hour. its impacts still are going to be felt. downed trees and power lines. also a fairly heavy surf, if you had about batten down the hatches already now the time is do so. tropical storm-strength winds even this post-hurricane or post-tropical system lee. it becomes elongated with bands of precip titation in the cente. so this acted like a nor'easter even though this is very early for that type of weather to impacted northern new england and maritime. >> karen, thanks so much. allies are racing to keep up with ukraine's demand for ammunition, coming up, cnn speaks with some of europe's biggest weapons manufacturers about what they're doing to fill the gap. and texas attorney general survives impeachment but his legal troubles are far from over. stay with us. what if your entire day glided like dove men? >> the eu made decisions, we want to invest, we're still waiting at the moment for the final decisions. >> reporter: ukraine can't afford to wait, the government tells us they're firing 5,000 to 6,000 of these rounds a day. russia meanwhile is firing 40,000 rounds a day, ukraine says. manufacturers in the u.s., ukraine's biggest backer have rapidly scaled up, not fast enough to avoid having to sub in controversial cluster kmunition this summer. >> reporter: the alternative to not having cluster munitions was them not having enough. >> we doubled our monthly output. that's quite significant. longer term investments beginning next year will start realizing additional capacity. >> i think we're in the face right now of an industrial war where capacity is the big issue. >> reporter: it's gone from making just a few thousands rounds a year to 8,000 a year. >> we're investing at some sites 50 to 20 times more than we normally do in order to be at capacity. >> reporter: with the counteroffensive moving slowly, it started later than planned, zelenskyy said, because weapons deliveries were delayed, does that concern you? >> to me it's a major concern, of course, we see the consequence in the battlefield, i think we all in the western society has a common responsibility to step up the capacity. >> reporter: so this is of course a once in a generation challenge that these companies are facing. and the chair of nato military committee warnd that inflation the cost of ammunition has gone up, even countries ramping up spending on defense that doesn't guarantee an increase in the security picture, a real warning out there. russia of course looking potentially for new sources of ammunition, we don't know yet if anything perhaps was agreed between kim jong-un to russia that's certainly part of this war as this drags on. >> fascinating look at the war production. exact number of ukrainian troops killed in the war isn't clear but it's likely staggering and each one is somebody special to those who loved them. the family who reluctantly saw them to fight a war they wouldn't survive. >> reporter: there's been no shortage of grief in ukraine. to today, it's the turn of his mother to say good-bye to her 42-year-old son killed on the front line he volunteered for. how many have died, neither side will say, for ukraine the number is believed to be many tens of thousands, today, though, for his wife, her own grief is all there is. saying good-bye too soon is part of everyday life in ukraine now. but never any easier for it. will rest amongst his own, many like him had never fought before, all died too soon. >> reporter: he had been a speechwriter, a political analyst who put down his pen to pick up a gun he told his wife so that she might live in safety. >> reporter: everyone here describes a man who was larger than life, now his optimism and light have given way to grief and disbelief that he's gone . >> reporter: the priest has urged those here to forgive him for dying. beside he says heroes never really die. and of heroes in cemeteries across ukraine there's no shortage either. melissa bell, cnn, kyiv. all right, this just into cnn, north korean leader kim jon jong-un's trip to russia has ended. boarding his personal train for the trip back to pyongyang. he was given a red carpet sendoff by the russians as he departed. the train ride is about 125 miles or about 20 on kilometers. labor strikes are on the rise in america but union membership continues to decline, do unionized workers have enough to meet their goals? (vo) ask your doctor about once-weekly mounjaro. welcome back to all of you watching here in the united states, canada and all around the world. this is "cnn newsroom." striking union auto workers were out in front of three plants saturday as the walkout against three top u.s. automakers stretched into the weekend, now some drivers passing by the ford plant in wayne, michigan, honked their horns in apparent solidarity as the picketers waved signs. talks resumed and uaw called the talks with ford quote reasonably productive. but the two sides are far apart on wage increase and enhanced benefits. >> working for somebody who's tpp, you're making $10 less than me we're doing the same job, so i don't think that's fair, i think we need to be on an equal path whether you have to work two years to get there or four years to get there. >> reporter: what would you be your message to your union leaders at that bargaining table today? >>. >> just keep fighting for what's right and don't back down and settle for less. they have it. they have it. they can give it to us. >> donald trump weighed in on the strike as well, he blasted the head of the united autoworkers and he said the union was failing his members. here he is. >> auto workers are not going to have any jobs when you come right down to it because if you take a look at what they're doing with electric cars, electric cars are going to made in china, auto workers aren't going to have -- they're being sold down the river by their leadership. >> donald trump added he thinks the uaw leaders should endorse him for president. with all the attention being given to strikes we the uaw and hollywood writers you'd think unions would be stronger than ever. employees gained power during the pandemic. unemployment is at near decades low meaning that employers are posting more job openings than people to fill them. public support for them at the highest it's been since 1965. union membership has been declining dramatically for years. membership rateseaked in 1945 at one thirdf the workforce, fast forward to 1985 and that dropped to 18%. last year, over one in ten u.s. workers was unionized. joining me is john logan, a professor at san francisco state university. the number of strikes last year were up 50% over the year before, we have these two high-profile national strikes, is there a trend going on here? >> we're noticing sort of more militant, more assertive leadership at some of the well established unions, particularly the teamsters union under the presidency of shawn o'brien, the union got a very good pay settlement at u.p.s. without a strike earlier the summer. now the uaw under their new president shawn fain, represents new breed of union leader that's not unapologetic of taking on corporate greed. >> but there's a bit of -- sorry to jump in, there's a bit of a paradox here, you talk about the unions being more militant, there's been a greater move to yuanize but the numbers in so far as participation is going down. >> it has for several decades and that will continue to be the case unless realistically, unless we get stronger legal protection for the right to choose a union and the right to organize in the united states, the united states is the hardest country to form a new yoonon because of combination of the weak law and the very strong opposition on the part of companies like starbucks and amazon. >> and the political opposition as well from the red states, the so-called right to work states. i'm wondering how all these high-profile strikes, how that could, you know, be interpreted in the context of an election year, president biden touting himself as the most pro-union president and on the other hand, unions have been punching bags for republicans, just one example, yesterday, here's nikki haley, listen to this. >> it tells you that when you have the most pro-union president and he touts that he's emboldening the unions that's what you get. who pays for it is the taxpayers. >> talking about the uaw strike and blaming president biden for that and she was bragging about being as a union buster. how do you think this will play out politically? >> i think depending on the resolution of the strike if biden comes out clearly to support the workers, which he did yesterday, i think that will serve him well in states like michigan and other key battleground states in the upper midwest. these are going to be critical to the outcome of the next presidential election, unions are still strong in these states. and biden needs to win a significant majority of votes not just from union members in those states but also union households, you know -- >> but it's complicated, right, you have to, you know, democrats traditionally count on union support, on the other hand they've been hemorrhaging support from working class -- the transition to electric vehicles which workers say will cost them jobs. and donald trump referring to that. the allegiance aren't as straightforward as they were before. >> that's true to extent. president biden weren't win these states if not for strong union households. it does open an opportunity for a sort of, you know, nationalist, protection demagogue like donald trump who in 2016 did very well in pennsylvania, michigan, ohio, in wisconsin and that's basically how he won the presidency. so biden needs those union votes in states like michigan and ohio. and i think that, you know the electric vehicle issue is a little bit of a red herring, the president of the uaw has said he doesn't care what kind of cars they make, whether they're electric vehicles or not, as long as they're good, well-paid union jobs. >> finally, this impossible is know, what's your sense, how long do you expect the uaw strike to last? >> i think it's almost inconceivable it would go on for months and months, but there's not a very quick resolution in sight, they're still very far apart when it comes to bargaining. unless the big three step up with a much, much better offer, this is likely to go on for, you know, probably for a number of weeks. >> really great to see this context on these with so much turmoil going on. really appreciate it. john logan, thank you. >> thank you texas attorney general paxton was acquitted on saturday in his impeachment trial. the acquittal isn't the end of his legal trouble. >> reporter: ken paxton is celebrating his victory in this impeachment trial by calling the case managers brought to the senate is a shameful experience. his lawyers said this vote today is a total vindication of the attorney general who will now be reinstated into his job. in fact, it was a resounding victory of the 18 voting republicans senators only two of them crossed the aisle to vote to convict ken paxton, so he had overwhelming support among republicans in the texas senate and his lawyers say that ken paxton is ready to get back to work. >> this is trial that should have never happened, period, full stop. the right result happened. but it shouldn't have gotten this far. >> we're proud of the case we put on, we should not have to prove our innocence but that's what we did and we believe that the court reached the right verdict, we're very proud of the work we did. >> reporter: this impeachment vote has erupted an all-out civil war among texas republicans. dan patrick who oversees the senate after the trial spent several minutes blasting house republicans for voting on these articles of impeachment and bringing these charges to the senate side. on the house side, the speaker of the house shot back at dan patrick saying, it was clear based on that speech that this entire voting process was orchestrated from the very beginning, essentially accusing senators of pre-determining their vote before hearing all the evidence and also going on to say that this process cheated the voters of texas of justice in this case. and also, democrats and some republicans saying that this vote is essentially ly condonin corruption at the highest level of texas politics. >> the board of managers presented overwhelming evidence that ken paxton is the most corrupt politician in the state of texas at this time. and the republicans in the texas senate just returned him to the office of top cop. i will rely on what i said on the floor of texas house, god help us. >> ken paxton still has legal troubles he's facing, he's under federal investigation stemming from the very issues that came up in this impeachment trial and all of that is issues he'll have to deal with in the months ahead. >> the climate crisis is affecting the panama canal. ahead, what's gone wrong and the impact on global trade. stay with us. y do dermatologists choose dove?
