Still at 60 to 65 miles an hour. Notice the scope of the storm. The center of it still over areas in both carolina but the rain bands extend well off to the north. Raining across portions of new york, new jersey and even massachusetts from some of these outer bands. The heaviest rain mainly focused across portions of virginia and North Carolina. We have heavy bands making their way across portions of raleigh right now. We see them spreading farther north and the places like new jersey, delaware. That is the general trend through the next 24 hours. We have Flood Watches in effect for several states with the red indicating flash flood warnings including raleigh and communities off to the east. Basically the concern is they already had two or three inches of rainfall and anticipate another one or two inches on top of what they already have. There is a concern for continued flooding in the region. By tonight the bulk of the rain will be focus more over the mid atlantic. By Early Sunday Morning now the bulk of the rain is really positioned over portions of the northeast. If you live in new jersey, pennsylvania, it will be several more hours before we start to see an end to the rain. Flooding potential both days, today and tomorrow, but two separate areas. Today mainly across Virginia North carolina. Overnight into tomorrow that will transition a focus more across the northeast, specifically pennsylvania, new jersey, portions of new york and connecticut. Rainfall most areas likely will pick up two to two inches with some picking up five or six inches total before the system finally exits. It will exit and continued weakening off to the north. Eventually out to the east pushing out over the open atlantic. That is still 24 to 36 hours from now. You will continue to see the wind calming down every few hours we go past, but peaking at some pretty impressive amounts. Look out, North Carolina topping out at 73 miles an hour but even other states. Seattle, new jersey topping out at 60 miles an hour. Other states and locations have pretty significant high wind reports around 50 to 60 mile an hour ranges. We start to see storm surge already peaking for the day and especially across North Carolina the farther north we have high tide coming for some of the stairs either in the next hour or some within the next two or three hours. You will still see water levels rising approaching high tide, especially for areas the maryland, delaware and new jersey. More to come. Thank you so much. Lets go midatlantic right now where we have brian todd and alexandra with already high water and quite a few cars are turning around. Whats going on . Reporter really we start to feel the effects of the storm in earnest in alexandria the Potomac River. Prince street is starting to flood with this honorable area flooding even in normal times. The Potomac River is lapping up over the seawall and onto the street. High tide is not for another hour. I will be joined in a second bite ebony fleming, spokesperson for the city of alexandria. Some lights good experience outages. Making sure we abide by the look at the fourway stop. For those individuals at home, clearing the patio because it is so windy. Clearing gutters and hopefully you have done that already. It seems the storm is already here. Reporter this area of alexandria, as we pan over received the Street Lighting and king street flooding. Why is this particularly vulnerable . We are at the waterfront built on a marsh which is susceptible to flooding and then we have high tide. With the wind, high tide, it is a combination of issues that will lead to more flooding. Reporter you made sandbags available to all the businesses. Have people been taking advantage of that or not . Folks need to heed the warnings and take advice, stay indoors if you can. We are on the jersey shore but i dont see any people around you anymore. Earlier folks were Walking Around and now they have gone inside. Reporter there were a few we saw within the last hour but The Rain Did Come And Go On the jersey shore. What has intensified are the winds and whats telling is behind me where you see decorative palm trees flailing in the wind. Most telling brats is off the jersey shore we see the wind whipped waves that speak to the potential for Deadly Rip Currents which is why officials hear of actually locked up the gates or the beaches access. Weve seen one determine individual on the other side of the gates. For the large part most folks in new jersey are choosing to ride out the storm indoors. Most of the businesses on the boardwalk are clothed. We have one pizza joint in front of me that said theyve actually been Serving Pizza is 1950 so the storm will not stop them. There still open for business. One individual by me but very few folks for the most part. People have decided to stay in. In terms of flooding, we have not seen significant flooding yet. Its all about the wind. We have been in worse conditions. It does not take much to topple power lines and then you end up with the potentially deadly situation and of course with power outages. That is what we are monitoring here in new jersey with conditions continuing into today, and potentially into tomorrow as well. Perhaps not as bad as today. The storm is not finished. Thank you so much, polo sandoval. To the ongoing response to the surge of migrants at the southern border. U. S. Customs and Border Protection has resumed operations at the international Roadway Crossing Bridge in eagle pass, texas after the agency shut it down. Meanwhile, Homeland Security secretary Alejanddro Mayorkas set to visit the Rio Grande Valley in Southeast Texas today. He will torah mcallen, texas with the president of honduras. Our sitting president rafael romo is here with us now. Many cities along the border are expressing they are stressed. We are there to perhaps convey some relief for at least a hear the grievances. Some relief and hope. Speaking of grievances, there is plenty coming from the government in texas. The government is saying it is railing against the Biden Administration, saying Border Communities are overwhelmed and overrun by the large number of migrants arriving and calling the situation a crisis. Governor abbott announced the Texas Division of Emergency Management to deployed additional buses to the Border Cities of eagle pass and el paso. The purpose is to peaking transport them to the century cities and chartered municipalities mostly run by democrats. Governor abbott said last year texas busted nearly 12,000 migrants to the nations capitol. 15,010 your, 8703 chicago. In the Statement Governor abbott said the following. Until President Biden oppose the constitutional duty to secure americas southern border, texas will continue to deploy as many buses as needed to relieve the strain caused by the surge of illegal crossings. Meanwhile the Biden Administration announced several steps being taken to address the situation, including the deployment of 800 activeduty Military Personnel adding capacity to border facilities and continue to conduct deportation fights. The problem goes beyond migrants that have made it to the u. S. Southern border on tuesday. The mexico largest Railroad Operators suspended service of several northbound train lines after reporting halfdozen injuries and deaths of migrants. Homeland security secretary Alejanddro Mayorkas is expected to meet at the border this afternoon with hungarian president. It will be happening within the next few hours and thats a very important meeting because honduras has the next to the largest number apprehen u. S. Border by Border Patrol. Is that the honduran president that feels he stands to gain more from the conversation or is it secretary Alejanddro Mayorkas that feels they could get more intel an understanding as to why so many hondurans are making their way to the border. Traditionally is the idea of having the shared responsibility. The countries, origin countries trying to do with they can to stem the flow of migration to the north. U. S. Officials also trying to help financially to create opportunities locally so that these people dont have to leave. Good to see you, rafael romo. Lets talk more about all of this with an attorney and Immigration Analyst and cnn opinion rider writer. Great to see you. The border surge has been an issue for years and what do you believe is at the root of the latest influx . Reporter there are two factors in play. One is that countries of origin. That is the economic authoritarianism and economic instability. Thats growing climate change. Those factors push migrants to leave their countries of origin. They have no future. But on the american side of the border the bigger problem is not just the numbers of people at the border. Its the broader Immigration System is so dysfunctional. It is outdated and out of touch with reality of the 21st century. We have not updated our systems , Immigrations System since 1986. We have 10 million undocumented people here. The measures weve seen in recent years like daca, Temporary Protective Status are only bandaids on the bigger problem. Until as the country and im talking about congress specifically, we stop focusing so much on the ebb and flow of the border numbers and tackle the much larger problem of our outdated Immigration System. Unfortunately will keep coming back to the same status quo of Human Suffering and overwhelmed Border Cities. Give me a good example of what is updating the Immigration System. For starters let me remind you that the people coming, arriving at the borders now, are not undocumented or Illegal Immigrants per se. They are pursuing asylum claims. Once they come to the country, with a backlog of 1. 6 million asylum cases. The average asylum case text 4. 5 years to process start to finish. The good way to address it is to send more resources into immigration courts, to support personnel, and to process all the large numbers of people so that we dont have huge crowds of people at the border. Also a tremendous population within our borders waiting for asylum case that may be five years or more. Again, the bigger picture. Its congress that got us into the problem. The only we can get out of it is by Congress Taking action on immigration. Whatever measures the different president s have done such as president obama, with daca, President Trump met with some is immigration bands, and now President Biden. They are only temporary solutions. The solution must come from congress to address it in a meaningful way. So far congress has not shown any propensity to cooperate and to compromise, to get us past the situation. In the meantime, again, we see so much suffering. These pictures, quite disturbing. But politically, they are one reason that President Biden has i believe 31 Approval Rating on immigration. Because people see this, whatever they know about immigration or the system, they know is not right and its upsetting people. The only way we will get beyond this is just a look beyond the border, look at the broader system, and hopefully update it, fix it and provide more resources. So when the white house announces the expansion of the humanitarian Relief Program for venezuelans, already in the u. S. , makes an impact or makes a difference. Allowing hundreds of thousands more people to be eligible for work permits. Is that at least a shortterm solution . Are you hopeful about that . Im hopeful about that. Normally asylumseekers have to wait six months before they can even begin to work in this country. Under tps those that registered and probably vetted can work right away. That will start getting them all the City Social Services programs. They can start the fund on housing and pay taxes, contribute to the cities and states. That is a positive development. But tps will last for 18 months. What happens when at times goes by . It is a bandaid fix. I think the mayor of new york, governor and many other mayors around the country welcome it. That is not a lasting fix. Unfortunately the way the political system is designed with no cap on asylumseekers, no Country Limits on asylum seekers, we will ultimately come back to more greater numbers of people. Is the question of what to do with them. I welcome this. It shows me that President Biden is listening to some of the mayors around the cities. What would be ideal i think would be some of these republican mayors in the border states, instead of being so antagonistic with the Biden Administration, if we saw more cooperation in terms of how they are handling this unprecedented crisis. Raul reyes, we leave it there for now. Thank you so much. Thank you. Still to come, russia gets his turn at the u. N.
