The government is headed straight for a shutdown at the end of this week unless congress can come to an agreement and pass a Spending Bill at the end of this week. But as the hours go by, and we get closer to that deadline on midnight of September 30th, there you see it on screen, there are no signs of compromise among republican lawmakers. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy admits he doesnt have the votes at this point, even for a stopgap measure, and members of his own party, gop hardliners are stymieing him in his efforts to keep the government open. Lets discuss more now with republican congressman ralph garmin of south dakota. He is a member of the House Freedom caucus. Congressman, thanks very much for being with us. We appreciate it. Do you think were heading toward a shutdown . Whats your sense of it right now . Yes, we are. We will be next week we met in rules committee. We passed out four bills well stoned the floor, department of defense, agriculture, Homeland Security and state and foreign ops. Well put them on the floor. Well probably debate it the next two days and vote on it by friday, and hopefully send that over. But, jim, the real issue is not the shutdown. The real issue is the two crisis we have in this country. Economic security crisis and economic crisis. Weve got a problem in this country. And what weve done in rules is attach to the homeland bill. Weve got the language that unless they force hr2 that is the security border, strict enforcement of that, were not going fund what mayorkas, because he hasnt done the job and he hasnt put the money to it. This administration has put this country into tough shape economically and with National Security. Wont a Government Shutdown exacerbate the Economic Situation in this country . And its certainly not going to help down at the border, if Border Patrol agents arent getting paid because there is a Government Shutdown. Well, whats we cant expect a different result. Again, weve done this, i dont know how many years. Thats weve got to 32 trillion in debt. Were going have a permanent shutdown if we dont get this economic crisis handled in this country. And so were going try to one thing that we did in january in the election of mccarthy is ask for the Spending Bills, 12 Appropriation Bills to go line item by line item in june and july and not wait until the last minute. So September 30th has never been a figment of our imagination. October 1 has always been the new budget year. Is there is a part of you that wants to shut the government down to send a message . Is that part of this . There are just some members in the Freedom Caucus who want to shut it down to see if the message can get across that youre trying to send . No. The message were getting across is its not business as usual. Were not going bankrupt this country. Were not going to do it. And they keep doing the same thing. Weve always both democrat and republican, jim, have run it down to the wire. And then it will go on these Continuing Resolutions. It will go if we approve it a spending gap, a spending amount, either 30 days or we get it through christmas, and then say oh, were going to have to go to the same spending levels, but much higher, as weve always done. And were not doing that. Yeah. So you got a government that sure shut the businesses down. They sure shut the School Children out of schools. And its time we get a handle on it. And were going to do it. Well, let me ask you this. House speaker Kevin Mccarthy had some choice words for members of your conference, republican conference, its own party. Lets listen to what he told reporters on thursday. Its frustrating in the sense that i dont understand why anybody votes against bringing the idea and having the debate. And then youve got all the amendments if you dont like the bill. This is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. That doesnt work. Congressman, the speaker there saying there are members of your conference who want to burn the whole place down. Are you one of those members who wants to burn the whole place down . It sounds like he is calling you an arsonist. No. Look, its not about Kevin Mccarthy. Kevin should have had us working in july and august to come up with an agreement on the Spending Bills. And he had agreed in january to do that, to get us on a downward spending trajectory. He just hasnt done that. He has been in congress 17 years. Now, you know, we either are going toe face a reality, and he calls frustrated with us. The American People are frustrated with the way government has not worked and the way government politicians have spent their money. How can you and other Freedom Caucus members drive this hard line here . How can others in your Caucus Demand that you have this position that everybody has to go along with when you dont have the numbers . Well, we passed a dod bill out, and it didnt have the numbers. Look, its all about the, again, economic security. And anybody that doesnt see whats going on at the border and doesnt know that this country is were at a tipping point. And we either handle it or we dont. But Government Employees wont be getting paychecks. Members of the military wont be getting paychecks. Members of the Border Patrol down on the border wont be getting paychecks. Youre comfortable with that . Thats not right. Theyre going to get paid back pay. Whenever we open back up, and we will open back up. Look, jim, the sun is going to still shine. The ocean but thats real pain that theyre going to be going through. Are you going to get paid . Yes, Congress Gets paid. I didnt write the constitution. Im not that old. But what ill tell you this is americans living paycheck to paycheck. Simply, you can agree or disagree with it a lot of the members of the military are living paycheck to paycheck. If theyre not getting paid, you say theyre going to get back pay. If theyre living paycheck to paycheck, that doesnt sound too good for members of the military, members of the Border Patrol . , no its not. No, its not. But you mentioned Border Patrol. Theyre so frustrated with what this administration is doing, to let everybody in, everybody in this country. Its just not right. And were on tap to have 15 million illegals in this country as we how is that working out in new york . Its not. And so were tying the Border Security now to Homeland Security. Were going to do that on every appropriations bill to get a number, and well see where it goes. Everybody listening to this show ought to call their senator, because thats whoo were going to put it back on. And thank god, finally, schumer is getting booed. Aoc is getting booed. The American Public knows whats going on. Are you going to take responsibility for this . We were talking to john bolton, the former National Security adviser in a previous hour on this program who said typically when the government shuts down, republicans get blamed for it. Isnt thats whats going to happen this time around . Are you prepared to shoulder that blame . Look, this isnt about blame. This is about doing whats right for the country. And were trying to do that. It isnt business as usual. And the fact that americans live pay to paycheck because of this bidenomics, you know the one family its working for . Joe biden and his family. No one else its working for. The 330 million americans dont deserve it. All im saying is lets live like every business and every family does. Look at your spending and try to agree on it and know this will be the senates responsibility and the democrats who have caused this crisis. And it shouldnt be at this point in the history of this country. But how can you accuse democrats of causing this crisis when youre the ones who are going to shut down the government . Youre saying youre going to do it. Thats you. The last three and a half years, weve had an invasion. Hes opened it up. And guess what . I suspected this. Its for Keeping Democrats in office. He is giving jim, get this. He is giving Social Security and drivers licenses to illegal aliens. Are you trying to say there is an invasion of migrants in this country and the democrats are doing this to get elected . Is that what youre saying . Thats just not true. No, it is true. Look it up. He has given Social Security numbers and drivers licenses. He has done it in new york. What do you call that . What else can you call that . Give me a term for it. Sir, that is something that i mean, it sound like what youre doing when you say that is demonizing immigrants, when you say theyre coming into this country as some part of invasion to change the political calculus in this country. Thats not the case. There are lots of people who come into this country as immigrants and end up voting republican. Coming into this country legally. They come into this country legally. You term it however you want. They come in legally. Never before have we opened our borders up to every country all across the globe. And were going to stop it, one way or another. How you going to lock down the border, have better Border Protection if you shut down the government. I guess i dont understand that. That doesnt make any sense. Well, what does make sense and were going to have to force the public is going to have to force this Biden Administration to let the Border Patrol agents do their job, to get the wall built, have designated points of entry. And this administration is not doing it. Theyre doing it intentionally. And whether you agree with it or not, theyre doing it for power. Why are they giving Social Security numbers and drivers licenses why are you saying that . Intentionally doing what . Where is your evidence of this . Where is your proof of this . It just sounds like youre throwing rhetoric around with no basis in fact. Have you been to the border . Of course i have. Have you seen whats going on, the rapes, its open. Nobody can deny that. The border is its a crisis. Ill ask the questions, sir. And the border is not open. That is something that is peddled as a talk point, but its not true. There are fences. There are walls. There are Border Patrol agents who work on the border. The five plus million that have gotten into this country illegally is not a figment of our imagination. Ask the Border Patrol agents. Ask anybody down there. Theyre frustrated. You have not been able to answer my question as to how you effectively do Border Enforcement if youre shutting down the government. But i guess were not going to get an answer to that question. Right . I mean, if you shut down the government, saturday rolls around, youre going to have Border Patrol agents who are going to be without pay. How are they going to want to go out there and do Border Patrol enforcement if theyre not getting paid . It sounds like an effective way of running the government. Well, whats ineffective is this president doing what he is doing to america, and it shouldnt happen. Your own speaker says you want to burn the whole place down. I disagree with that. Hes we should, again, im not going to repeat it. You can say all you want, the border is closed and the border is an orderly people are being processed. Theyre not. He has created a National Security problem. When you have pilots telling me that as when i was down there, the pilots, the people you remember donald trump said he was going to build a wall down on the border, and it didnt happen. He said mexico was going the pay for it, and it didnt happen. Jim, look, those are your talking points. He did build a wall. He couldnt finish it because joe biden stopped him when he unfortunately went into office. And steel is laying on the ground, paying subcontractors. Its a National Security problem.
