Like something out of a hollywood movie. They used heatseeking technology to find him. And theres a 4yearold canine named yoda who was called to the defiant convict here. Police explained how it all went down. They were able to move in quietly. They had the element of surprise. Cavalcante did not realize he was sur rounded until that occurred. That did not stop him from trying to escape. He began to crawl through thick underbrush, taking his rifle with him as he went. One of the customs and Border Control teams had a dog with them. They released the dog. The dog subdued him. He resisted and was taken into custody. Here tonight, brian todd and danny friedman. They have covered this from the beginning around the clock. And danny broke the news of this capture. I want to begin with you. This has been a fascinating manhunt. It was the Haneeinous Act that committed. Then, he broke out. A crabwalk up a wall. It took almost two weeks to get him. And here we are, right now, and he has finally been captured. Walk us through what it was like for this enormous Law Enforcement presence to get this guy. It went down here this morning. It really started almost 24 hours ago exactly. Officers got a report of a burglary in Chester County. They didnt find him. They got support from above. A fixedwing got a heat signal. There was a huge storm last night. And the fixedwing airport had airplane had to go down. They kept the tactical teams here. They formed a perimeter. Really, a similar scenario to right here in the dark of night. They held that perimeter through that storm. 8 00 a. M. , they surprised him. They were to capture him. And that dog, that canine, yoda, the Border Patrol canine was able to get into this woods right here, a few hundred yards and apprehend cavalcante, bringing this to an end. You cannot overstate how dark it is here. Were behind lights. I had to see it for myself. How is this possible that this man has evaded capture all of this time. This is somebody that had a warrant outstanding from brazil. Hes a brazilian national. This is the second time, the bite of the apple here. And aside from where we are standing right now, you cant see in front of your hand very far. And you have dense forrest. You have all of the places you can hide. Talk to me about what he did to survive all of this time. You mentioned this was out of a movie. Compared to the movie the fugi fugitive, was tame compared to what he did. We got good video, some of the detail, they learned cavalcante, in his postcapture interview. He didnt move for a couple of days. He couldnt have gotten too far. He hunkered down, in one place, for a couple of days. When he did start to move around, he survived by drinking stream water, eating a watermelon he found in a farm field. And burying his fecal matter under leaves so the Law Enforcement couldnt detect him. He had experience from the 2017 murder when he was being hunted in brazil. He had some Experience Hiding in the jungle. Thats what we learned from lieutenant conditional george bivens. He came with some knowledge of the area. Ive never seen a manhunt, with this many instances of a fugitive, so close to Law Enforcement. And people saw him with eye balls. Day two, a trooper saw him and chased him. He got away. He got away from the guy in the garage who shot him several times and didnt hit him. He was closed to you at one point. He was close to us. Two nights ago, we were doing a live shot, a little earlier than we are now, 8 45 at a barn, based on a sighting that a woman had seen him less than an hour earlier, he was right where we were doing the live shot. He could be feet away. You cant see ten feet out here. He was close. What was he going to do next . Thats what we got from robert clark of the marshals office. He told the investigators today, his next plan, within the next 24 hours, to carjack someone, take their vehicle and drive towards canada. Weve been hearing from investigators for a long time that his plan was to try to leave the country and to try to get wheels. The two biggest factors he had to bet a weapon and a car. He stole a van. He ditched it. Got a gun. He wasnt able to get a gcar ths time. I wouldnt have believed it. In spite of your reporting, keeping us all informed all this time. Giving us so much information. In many ways, quelling the anxiety of all the people in the community here, knowing we were on the ground. So glad to have you both here today. Theres so much more to think about and whats happening. And by the way, when you think about and try to understand how hard this search was. Im talking about how many placeshe are to hide. I want youo see what i saw on a saw gns that cavalcante had been there. Becky patterson showed me around. Shes the Executive Director of the Farming Community behind us here. Where do you think he would have been hiding. Im seeing the homing. Theres tenants. But im seeing barns and stables. Yeah. Is there thought he was in those areas or in these zones and making hi way . Absolutely. There was a Heat Signature that was picked up early at 1 00 a. M. One of our tenants was telling me. And in the lower part of the barn, theres an upturned trash can. Theres cows he feeds every morning. He comes down and the trash can is flipped over. I didnt do that. Nothing missing. And certainly, places to hide all over this place. Especially down in this section. If he were in the field, all you need to do is jump over the fence and you have tall structures to hide in. You have open windows. Open doors. A vehicle can be used. And it was peak harvest season. You have food. We have a lot here. Pretty much everything. He would have had access the food. Apples. Theres apples in this barn. He had a food source if he was over here. If he knew where to look. If you line the pieces up, yes. Im looking over here. Just seeing this is where the trash can is. Show me where it is. Here. You can see, like, if he heard the helicopters, you can hide underneath all of this. Wow. Theres places to tuck away back in here. It is freaky to think about. The areas he would have had to hide behind or a board. Look how dark that is in there. Old Farm Equipment . Yeah. If youre a helicopter, youre not seeing anything. Huhuh. We have multiple structures like this. Theres tenants but no one would have been in those structures. He had, potentially, anywhere he wanted to hide. Yeah. It was a freeforall. Thats why it was scary here. This is the overturned trash can. Our former has these cows. But this is hes like, i didnt do that. Just freaky to think about. And the surreal part. You see the everyday things that you walk past that you would never think twice. And you look at it again, did i do that . Did i who was in here . What was that . And we work with six different farmers. People are in and out of everybodys we share the space. So, youre like, did you do that . Did i leave that open . You would never think and then, youre thrown in the situation. Did i put all of the pitch forks away . Is there anything that can be used for a weapon . Look. You got sharp pitch forks. They are Everyday Tools that we use, or the tenants use. And no light. That strikes me again. I see lightbulbs. If you dont want this on this, is pitch black. And you see here, the way the hay naturally is, you would look at this normally and not think for one second, theres something underneath here. Uhhuh. I want to bring in david. Weve been captivated by what weve seen. We learned that officers nearly stepped on cavalcante three times. Law enforcement, they brought so many resources to bear. And i just cant wrap my mind around how do you tackle the problem, if not just the scope and the shear breadth of the area, but how many places this man would have had to hide. Good evening, laura. Thanks for having me back on. This was a lot of challenges in this investigation and search. When we spoke before, i told you, ive been in Law Enforcement for 35 years. Ive never been part of an investigation of this magnitude, a manhunt. At one point, we had over 500 federal state, county, local Law Enforcement and support people. And working together, collaborating with a plan. And most of the credit goes to Lieutenant Colonel evans of the state police. He directed us. As the leadership, we put together a tactical plan and an legislative plan to find mr. Cavalcante. We did. What i find fascinating is many people who escaped prison wouldnt have known how to do that, number one. Let alone, how to survive in the elements, in extreme heat, in the cold at some points in time. I have a jacket on. Its not warm here at night. It was hot last week. You had the heat wave occurring here, as well. He had Survival Tactics that he was able to implement to evade capture. He was eating watermelon. Covering his own waste with leaves. What does it take to survive and to stay hidden out here . Are you thinking about what was going through his head and the ability to tactically plan . We thought about all that stuff. We had information from his arrest. I was there when the murder happened. I was one of the first detectives to respond to that scene. We were involved in an investigation and prosecution the whole time. He was resourceful. He did the things that he knew he could do. He wanted to shelter in the woods. He had done that in brazil. He did things he was comfortable with. He moved at night. He told our investigators at some points he stayed still for a day, day and a half. He told us, at some points, you know, the tactical teams walked past him. You went through some of the brush. That area i used to work. And i spoke to the tactical teams. When they are in there, theyre five feet apart and they cant see each other. Thats how thick it is. With the terrain, the hills and everything in that area, it was tough. We were committed. We had a team. And to watch this team work Collabc Collaboratiing is one of the mot Amazing Things ive been apart of. Im glad you mentioned. We cannot lose sight why this man was considered dangerous. What he did to this mother of two young children, in front of her two, young children, cannot be dismissed. This was 38 times she was stabbed in front of her children, i might add. Thats why he was not om arrested but convicted and sentenced to life in prison, without parole. And that can get lost when you talk about the danger of this person. It got more dangerous, of course, when we knew he was going to be armed. And apparently, he planned to hijack a car in the next day or so, after doing all he has done right now. I mean, how much more dangerous could this have gotten . If he had managed to escape this perimeter, this area, and made this a national issue. We were afraid he would get a weapon and why we had a tactical plan. And using the resources, you mentioned earlier. Every tiype of resource and a lt of sophisticated equipment to find him. That was part of our plan. It worked. We came close a couple times but he was able to elude us. That murder was horrific. What he did showed no emotion. I watched that trial. I was in that trial. I watched it. He showed no emotion. Didnt apologize. The jury came back in 15 minutes after hearing that case, in 15 minutes. And convicted him of firstdegree murder. Thats how horrific this crime was, and to see a week later, him escape the way he was, is shocking to me. We gathered our support and didnt stop working. The level of men and women, the tactical operators, its hard to describe here in words, of what they did. 12hour shifts in those woods, with all of the tactical gear. Never did they complain ever. They had a mission. They were focused. They wanted to capture him safely and wanted to make sure none of the citizens were injured or put in jeopardy. The county, they were it was unnerving for a lot of people. Not only in the areas, but the whole county. My phone rang off the hook the whole time. Is he close . When are you going get him . Is it safe to go here . The fear of the unknown was hard for a lot of people. But the men and women that were part of this investigation, the leadership of all of the agency, the state police, the federal agencies, the county agencies, we stayed on the same page with the same mission. We ultimately were able to take in the custody without firing one shot and injuring anybody. It cannot be underscored enough. Ill talk to a woman who had heryearold daughter on the same property where this man was and was captured 100 yards away. Schools were closed in this area. The real unknown, what would a man who had nothing to lose do the stay not captured. We have more to come this very hour, everyone. Im asking the question of what did it take to bring this manhunt to an end . And you keep hearing me mention, this dog called yoda. A police dog that was trained to do such dangerous work. And subdued this escapee. Various other agencies working on the prisoner escape. Are proud to announce the subject is in custody. Subject is in custody. Because scent cant sanitize. Lysol can. Hi, im sharon, and i lost 52 pounds on golo. On other diets, i could barely lose 1015 pounds. Manhunt, capturing a killer. Im laura coates in pennsylvania, where Danelo Cavalcante is behind bars after a twoweek manhunt. Here with me is Andrew Mccabe, the former fbi deputy director. And charles ramsey, the former Philadelphia Police director and director of washington, d. C. , as well. Ive been looking at this from a prosecutorial angle of what you do once the person is captured. You know what its like to be on a manhunt. To find somebody. To find the elusive need until the haystack. They did it a couple times. Today, they got him. Yeah. You know, incredible day for Law Enforcement. A great moment of validation for the peteam they had put togethe. A lot of things are going through your mind, as well. From the second it starts, you know youre on the brink of a major crisis. If you dont find this person, whatever they do, whatever they wreak on the community, thats on you. Law enforcement is working with a clock, ticking over their head, knowing we have to stop this person before they do something terrible. Absolutely the case here, with a guy we know has killed 200 people. Allegedly somebody in brazil and convicted for the murder here. I thought they did a remarkable job. They had a few unlucky breaks. He was able to get out of the areas he was hiding. They were right. He was hiding there, until he was able to slip the perimeters. That happens. Its part of this work. Its unfortunate. They got the break they were looking for. You make a very good point. Its difficult to try to find someone who doesnt want to be found. Okay . You add on top of that, thick woods and overgrowth. A huge area they had to search. At one point, it was eight, square miles. That is difficult to do any thorough search of an individual for an individual. I think what they did was remarkable to actually stay with it and continue to pour in the resources until they were able to catch a break. Thats when a Burglar Alarm went off. Put them in a direction. The thermal images from the dea plane, picked up what looked like a person crawling. They figured we might have that guy and they were able to establish a new perimeter. We had a violent thunderstorm last night. The plane had to land. They were able to pick it up in the morning and able to capture him. I dont think people appreciate how difficult it is to conduct a search like this. Its one thing to have 500 people. Its different to coordinate 500 people. Youre smiling because, you talked about the incredible job of Law Enforcement. Today, they were getting criticized day after day for how long it was taking. People dont understand on the issues. If coordination and the resources, was this overkill. Just enough . Not overkill. And the time it took, a reasonable amount of time, two weeks for a manhunt. For somebody like this, who is experienced of hiding in the woods. Hiding in these woods, pitch black. Its not unreasonable it would take two weeks. If they made a mistake anywhere. It was a minor one and was in communication with the public. Some of the statements early on were very confident. Overly confident. We have him pinned down in a perimeter. Were confident hes in there. Were going to be able to find him. Things like that. Statements with that level of confidence tend to elevate peoples expectations a little unrealistically. That may have been unset here. The work they did and the time they did it, great job. And no one hurt in the process. He was bit by a police dog. He was injured. Yoda did that. This man was found with a rifle. He was found with that gun near his body, everyone. That was one of the biggest concerns throughout this whole process here. You know, i thought he probably had a knife. He broke into one house. He was stealing food. What kitchen doesnt have a knife, right . It would be easy to have a knife. Thats one thing. When he finally got a firearm, that changed everything. Now, not only heightens the awareness of the officers, puts them in more danger. Puts the community in more danger. Now, you know the individual has a firearm. As you said earlier, he has nothing to lose. Hes committed two murders. Hes sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. He may as well go out in a blaze. I mean, theres nothing that would stop that sort of thing from happening. Thats on your mind. And i cant say enough about the courage of those officers, the men and women out there, still searching, even though it was said earlier, you couldnt see five feet away from you, in many instances. So so, it took a lot of courage. As far as the time, people think its tv, everything solved in an hour. Thats not reality. He would have been out of here. Now, youre talking about a national search. The experts are here, picking their brains. Andrew mccabe and charles ramsey. Stick around, everyone. I cant forget and wont let anyone forget the victim in all this. She was a mother. And cavalcante was convicted of stabbing her to death in front of her two
