Special air mission 41. The bush family will be gathering at Ellington Field shortly. You can see the motorcade there. His casket will be brought into view really for the first time as it will be loaded onto the plane. Then this world war ii flyboy will make one of his final flights. He will lie in state in the u. S. Capitol rotunda for the public to pay respects starting this evening going into wednesday morning. And then a state funeral begins. Also, traveling with his casket from texas to washington will be his beloved service dog sully. We saw him leaving the funeral home a short while ago. This is bushs longtime spokesman who shared this photo of sully laying next to the flagdraped casket. The caption reading simply, mission complete. Lets start in houston this morning. Kaylee hartung is at Ellington Air field with a layout of what were expected to see. This is the first of really a weeks worth of ceremonies. What will we see in a few minutes . Thats right, kate. Very soon here, george h. W. Bushs remains will arrive here at Ellington Field, escorted by many members of the bush family, including george w. And laura bush. They will board the president ial plane, the 747 behind me. Known as air force one, only when the current president is onboard, but President Trump has tasked this aircraft with special air mission 41 to bring george h. W. Bushs remains to washington and then return them back here to houston. Pretty soon here, we will see a very carefully choreographed ceremony. Full military honors will be rendered on president bushs remains, as his casket is boarded into the 747. We will hear four ruffles and flourished. Hail to the chief, and there will be a 21gun salute. And then that casket will be carried through a military cordon and placed in the aircraft. The ceremony will last approximately 30 minutes. As you mentioned, also onboard will be george h. W. Bushs beloved yellow retriever, sully. As you have seen that photo of him lying in front of that flagdraped casket. Also onboard, george h. W. Bushs secret Service Detail. They will be in the second car following his hearse throughout the duration of any motorcade you see in the coming days as well. We will have a joint military honor guard serving as pallbearers today. That secret Service Detail serving as honorary pallbearers today also. Kate, the details for a state funeral have been a Partnership Working the bush family and the department of defense, but there are some details that only a family can see to. We have learned that president bush will be carried to his final resting place, wearing socks that pay tribute to his lifetime of service that really began when at 18 years old he made the commitment to be a naval aviator. You can see those airplanes on those socks he will wear to his final resting place which will be in College Station, texas, home of the bush president ial library on thursday, kate. All really just beginning as we watch the slow motorcade, the slow procession to where you are in Ellington Air field. Well follow this all together throughout the hour. Well get back to you. Cnn is learning many new details about the funeral and Memorial Services planned for president bush. Cnn special correspondent jamie gangel is there with many of the details. Great to see you. Thank you for being here with me. Thank you. What are you learning . Whats the latest youre learning . First and foremost, who is in the motorcade . In the motorcade are many members of the texas family. The ones who arent on the east coast. The east coast members of the family will be at andrews to greet him, so it is neil bush and his wife maria. Former president george w. Bush will be on the plane but meeting them at the air field. And a lot of the grandchildren we saw in the picture. Pearce bush, ashley, neils children. So many of them are going to be in that motorcade. I just want to go back to the secret service for a moment, because theyre the honorary pallbearers. But we saw something that was unexpected. They actually carriy eied his ct out of the funeral home and put it into the hearse. And that was Something Special that bush 41, as i call him, wanted. It was in honor of his relationship with them. They were very, very close. Some other details that were learning. We now know who will give the eulogies. At the National Cathedral, as we have been reporting, it will be his son, former president george w. Bush. It will also be his dear friend, former canadian Prime Minister brian mulroney. They were very close. Alan simpson, former republican senator from wyoming who is not only a dear front, but i think the two of them laughed constantly together. And then finally, jon meacham. His biographer, will we one of the eulogists. We now can report also that all of the former president s will be in attendance at the National Cathedral, so president obama, clinton, carter, and all of the first ladies except Rosalyn Carter who is not able to travel at this time. As you were mentioning who is eulogizing the president , the current president is not on the list. No. What will his role be . So we he will be in attendance. The bushes wanted him to be there. Bush 41 cared about the office. So despite the fact that there were these very harsh feelings, despite the fact we know he actually voted for hillary clinton, he would only have it that the president would be there, out of respect for the office. He is not speaking. So a lot of people may think that is a slight to President Trump because president s have spoken at recent funerals. But actually, those plans were in place before President Trump ever became president. And i think in this case, theres another factor. His son is a former president. And he will be speaking. But there is no question were all going to be watching that moment very carefully, because he wasnt at john mccains funeral. And that was very noticeable. How they interact with him when theyre all together, the former president s. Because they dont speak. Theres been no relationship. They do not speak. You know, every time we think about president bush 41, his relationship with barack obama, clinton, his son. Its as if its another time. So its going to be fascinating to watch the interaction. Yeah, absolutely will. Jamie will be with me throughout the hour. Thank you. Well have much more on this. Well bring you all of the live moments as they begin. Well bring you back to houston live shortly where the bush family is. Theyre gathering to bring the 41st president to the nations capital. Ripping into his former attorney, longtime attorney and fixer Michael Cohen after cohen pleaded guilty last week to Misleading Congress in its russia investigation. But also in doing so, announcing that hes done some 70 hours worth of interviews with the special counsel. Cohen is asking a judge he serve no jail time, no prison time for his cooperation in the investigation. Abby phillip is at the white house with the latest. It is not unusual for the president to go on a tear on twitter about the russia investigation, but hes definitely on a tear this morning. Absolutely. After a brief hiatus over this weekend, the president is back on the subject of his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen. Hes saying cohen lied, essentially, to get leniency from the court, and he lied specifically about things relating to trump. The president is claiming that what cohen is accused of has to do with fraud, big loans, taxis. He said he made up stories to get great and reduced sentences for himself and his wife and fatherinlaw. The president said he lied for this outcome and should in my opinion get a full and complete sentence. Just a fact check. What Michael Cohen pled guilty to is lying about something that he claims he talked to President Trump about. A business deal they were pursuing in moscow during the campaign. The president goes on to talk about someone else who he has been close to, roger stone. An adviser and friend of the president s who has said over the weekend that he would not testify against President Trump because he would have to lie in order to do that. President trump says nice to know some people still have guts. He goes on in another tweet to criticize Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigator, saying that they dont want the truth. They only want lies. Truth is a very bad mission. Very bad for their mission. So President Trump is clearly very fixated on this, but we should be clear that what Michael Cohen is accused of doing here is lying about things that are in fact directly related to the president. And of course, Robert Mueller probably would not take Michael Cohens word for it if there is corroboration, that is probably what underpins this guilty plea. Thats exactly right, abby, and also worth noting that it maybe doesnt matter exactly what the president says on twitter. What does matter most is what he said in his sworn answers to the special counsel, which is now in the special counsels hands. Great to see you. Thank you so much. Moments from now, were expecting the departure ceremony to begin in houston for former president george h. W. Bush. Youre looking at the procession right now. You see the hearse leading the way. President , secretary baker is here. He opened both eyes, looked at me, said hey bake, where are we going today . I said, well, were going to heaven. He said good, thats where i want to go. Little did i know or did he know, of course, that by 10 00 that night, he would be in heaven. It is impossible to listen to that and not feel the love of that friendship between george h. W. Bush and former secretary of state, his longtime friend, james baker. Were looking right now live back in houston right now. The bush family preparing to accompany the former president on his final flight to washington, d. C. The departure ceremony set to begin really any moment at Ellington Air field in houston. You can see military on hand, his family will be on hand. Onlookers will be there, all to celebrate the former president. Joining me right now as we watch these really beautiful pictures, tom call amour, the senior staff member to president bush when he was vice president. Tom also went on to serve in the bush administration. Mary kate carey, jamie gangel is back with me, im not going to let her leave. Kristen clark taylor was director of Media Relations for president bush, and jeffrey is the author of when the world seemed new, george h. W. Bush and the end of the cold war. Thank you for being with me. Were looking at special air mission 41, what we see right there. Kristen, really, you wrote so eloquently over the weekend about your relationship and your view of president h. W. Bush. You at one point wrote, a sense of caring and compassion and human kindness that ran through them, meaning h. W. And barbara bush, through them like a river and washed over everything and everyone that they touched. I thought that was really a beautiful way to put it. Your personal relationship with the president , you worked for him, but also you were on the receiving end of the personal touch he has with his personal notes, when you see this playing out, what do you think today . My heart is happy but my spirit is a little low. I will miss my friend. And i know that this is a joyous time, when we come together. But the reason were coming together makes my heart sad. He was an extraordinary man. The finest i have ever met. And my heart is sad. So i will take and treasure the memories i have with him and my colleagues. And ill take those with me always. Jeffrey, how do you describe bush 41 to people who dont know him, never met him . The first thing i say is hes the consummate gentleman. He was a person who was always respectful to his political adversaries and political friends in the same way. Really remarkable among president s to see a person who seemed almost incapable of not being polite to people along the way. In one point in one of the diaries we edited from him, he used a terrible insult about someone, he called them not a gentleman. About as far as he was willing to go. As far as he was willing to go. Jamie, kristen reminded me of something as she was speaking, that in the days since the president has passed, i have noticed his family members were speaking about him, yes, of course, theyre grieving. But theres real celebration and joy in how they have been speaking. It almost seems like they really want to set a tone. No question. The formal title of these services is going to include the word celebration. And while there is no question they are heartbroken, he was 94. They knew this day was coming. They adored him. And they wanted to be about the best of him. And for people to remember. I think even more poignant in the times we are in now, to remember what this man was like. Just to jeffreys point about his saying someone wasnt a gentleman. If you ask his children about discipline in that household, they will tell you, remember barbara bush was the enforcer. But the worst thing that their father would say to them was, im disappointed in you. And you wouldnt want they would say that look, where he would put on his glasses and look over those glasses. So both in the family and in public life, that was who the man was. I want to talk about that. I want to talk about the family. Were going to see them gathering at ellington shortly as the procession continues. And were going to talk more about the family after a break. Were expecting the bush family motorcade. They should be arriving to the air field very shortly ahead of george h. W. Bushs final journey to washington, d. C. The flyboy making one of his final flights today. Special air mission 41 right there, youre joining cnns special coverage of president george h. W. Bushs final journey to washington, d. C. Air force one rebranded as special mission 41, standing by to department to joint base andrews. The bush family motorcade is set to arrive at any moment and there will be a ceremony well bring to you when the plane departs. The silence there, you can just hear the wind in houston. Its truly moving. The panel, as we wait, the panel is back here with me. Mary kate, president h. W. Bush is one of, what, two men in American History who holds the honor of being both president and father of a president. And i was watching 41 on 41 again last night, my favorite movie. Amazing. She executive produced it, so everyone knows. How did they navigate that relationship . I think in their minds, they think it was very typical fatherson relationship that was no different from anybody elses. And when i have talked to family members about it, they think they are just like any other american family. And why would anybody be interested in them . And i have said to them, oh, no, to have your father and your brother both be president of the United States is a very unique thing. And there is Something Different about your family. And it may seem normal to you, but its not normal to the rest of us. So please share with us, you know, how did you get through things and what were the values you were taught . A lot goes back to the grandmother, Dorothy Walker bush and the way she raised the president. No braggadocio, no talking about yourself. For a while when he was a child, his nickname was half half, because he was constantly sharing whatever he had with someone else. That spirit of service and giving back was engrained, and thats carried throughout the generations. Theres also a tremendous amount of sports that keep the family together. We know about the Ranking Committee where the president would decide who could play who in tennis or golf. No committee, spoiler alert. Very competitive on sports. Another thing that makes their family very different, i think, is the amount of humor and pranks that go on is remarkable. And that, to me, is a very cohesive thing for their family, and explains a lot about their outlook on the world. Very funny group of people. When you talk about the humility, the humility that was taught, demanded, and embodied the man, i wonder what you think that president h. W. Bush would be thinking of today, all of the accolades, all of the tributes that are being laid upon him right now. I think one of the things i think of is we hear three words associated with the president often. Faith, family, friends. And were about to see some very poignant moments play out here. He was a man of deep faith. He just didnt wear it on his sleeve. He lived it every day of his life. And his family was the center of his universe, and he would be thrilled at the participation of the grandchildren in particular in both todays services and the departure, seeing them all scurry around there at the funeral home. It just made me think he would be smiling at that. And friends. I mean, there is no living american who has more true close personal friends than george h. W. Bush. And the next few days, well see all of them come out talking about him and their special relationship. And its not fiction. I mean, this man kept in close touch with an uncountable number of people. And it was real. And it was genuine. When i saw that casket come out, jamie mentioned it with the secret service carrying him, that touched my heart because ill guarantee you, he knew the first name of every one of those agents. He knew their wives names and kids names. Its always been that way. Its a poignant moment. I love to joke that he had thousands of close personal friends. But he really did. He really did. And we had to keep track of all of them. The National Cathedral, by the way, is just too small a venue. I will tell you that. For everyone, it is not a small venue. Thats the point tom is trying to make right now. Jeffrey, when you think of the close personal relationships, was that would you say that was what was behind the success that he had on so many Foreign Policy fronts . Pearce bush said something great, i think its been said that he became this Forrest Gumplike character in the last american century, when it came to moments in history that he was a part of. No doubt about it. That the personal was really crucial to his diplomacy. The president would make a real point of getting to know foreign leaders, but the critical thing was he would get to know them before the crisis where he needed them. He would call them up just if he had a few moments during the day, call them up randomly, someone from africa, from asia, and say tell me about what you think. How does the world look to you . I think that helped build the trust when he called them and needed something as the president , then they were more willing to listen. I have to say, theres one Important Note here which is he always called when he had a few moments in the day. It just shows the power of the presidency, no matter what time it was in their country, they would pick up the phone and talk to them. You take that call. You always do. Stay with me. Were watching this in houston at Ellington Air field. The bush family will be arriving shortly. Were going to fit in a quick break before the ceremony begins. Thank you so much for joining me. Were looking live at Ellington Air field in houston. Where youre looking at, well, president ial airplane today called special air mission 41. The president ial plane taking president h. W. Bush and his family to his final flight to washington, as the ceremonies, services, and funeral will be taking place for the next coming days. The ceremony set to begin any moment. My panel is sitting here with me, and we were in the break, jamie, talking about president bush was a stoic man. But also known for his humor. I mean, just ask dana carvey, and liked to crack a joke himself, and on the people around him. And he also would pull pranks. And he loved his secret service. But there was something he also loved to do to his secret service. I was just talking to his spokesman, jim mcgraph, who texted me the word fidelity. So fidelity was his boat, and there were a series of them over the years. They got more and more powerful. And i remember i was once out with him, and i am not the only person this happened to. He said watch this. His boat could outrun the secret service boats. And he would just go out to sea and he thought it was the funniest thing in the world. The secret service figured it out. They then had two boats on him. They had one all the way out there to make sure they got him on the other side. But that was classic george bush. You can see, as you all have noted, you can see that relationship, that bond that he had with everyone around him, including the secret service, evident today, as you can see theyre honorary pallbearers and also the actual pallbearers who brought the casket from the funeral home to the hearse. Were seeing as the bush family motorcade and hearse is arriving to Ellington Air field. But as were watching, you brought actually a note, kristen, that george bush wrote you. One of the final the final note you received. I had gone to see him in houston just for the day, just for the day. I flew from d. C. Into houston. Sat with him for a couple of hours. By then, and i wont say he was bound to his wheelchair, because he was never bound. But he was sitting in his wheelchair. We had a wonderful conversation, just talking, about memories and about things that had happened. He remembered more than i did. I thought, where is that coming from . And shortly, as i was leaving the office, i heard him kind of holler out. He said kristen, hes not one to holler, at least he never hollered or yelled at me. I turned around, kind of ran back into his office. And he held his arms out and said one more hug. And i hugged him. And i didnt know that that would be the last time i saw him. And i guess thats a life lesson for us, to always just say i love you. Or goodbye. Hello. All of it. The next day, though, and im still trying to figure out how quickly this happened, the next day i went to my mailbox, and there was a note. It didnt come fedex so im thinking how did that happen so quickly. There was a note penned in his hand. By then, the parkinsons set in and it was illegible, but what was legible was the love he felt and the personal kind of conviction that he felt. And i could just imagine him pushing his hands to write that letter. And to me, thats one of the single most wonderful memories that i have of him. Thats truly special, that he even took the time, and in that state. You know how frustrating it would be to not be able to pen it the way you wanted. It reminds me, all of us who are privileged enough to work for this great man have a drawer full of these notes at home. And were not unique. Were not unique. Remember all those friends . I remember my first one was in 1978. I had driven him to the airport after an event in connecticut. And i had given him a note saying, you know, if you run, i would love to help. I got a handwritten note two days later from houston that said if i decide to run, i would be honored to have your help. He had me from then on. Absolutely. Mary kate, one thick that we havent talked about and i wanted to make sure we get in is the role of world war ii and being a flyboy. How did his experience in world war ii, his respect for service and duty, how do you think what happened to him in world war ii, how that dictated his path . I think he would be the first to say that he had a bit of survivors guilt. It bothered him tremendously that he lost his two crewmen. He also sent a number of letters to other crewmens families when they were lost. He was very aware of the cost of war. And hated war. But yet, as he went through his career, and i think a lot of his career was because he felt he had to make his survival worthy of their deaths, and so he had a tremendous life of service, i think in large part because of the two men who lost when they got shot down. And as he became commander in chief, world war ii greatly affected the way he prosecuted the persian gulf war, the tremendously low number of casualties was not an accident. He made sure that happened. And he was very careful about ending the vietnam syndrome at the time and thanking our veterans. I think veterans now in the United States are treated much, much more differently than they were because of the way he reacted to the way it happened to him. And so it was a lifelong thing, world war ii happening to him really changed the course of his life, and he would say for the better. Even though it was a tremendously sad period for him, but it affected the rest of his life in a tremendous way. Jamie, theyre about to pull up, the family is there with him. Some meeting, some of the family, east coast family, will be meeting them in washington. The role of his public life on his family, on his relationship with his children. I think we have heard the grandchildren say a number of times, and to your point about celebration, theyre all doing interviews. Their grandfather wanted them this is not, they want to be out there and talking about his life. I heard an interview with either jenna or barbara, former president george w. Bushs twins, talking about how they thought everyones grandfather was president. I love that. Of the United States. And the other thing is, these two people, both former president bush and barbara bush, never let anything go to their children or grandchildrens heads. If you went up to kennebunkport, there were a list of rules about picking up towels and making your bed. And i remember president bush just being appalled that his grandchildren had left a halfopen can of soda. You have heard this, too. So there was nothing about their private life that would make you feel that he was president of the United States. The picture i love is the one i think we showed it earlier this morning of the president and mrs. Bush in bed with all of the grandchildren around them. What does that say . It was one of his favorite pictures, that this was his family. This was the real deal. You can see, if we can join together, now the ceremony is beginning at Ellington Air field in houston. Lets listen in. Im john king in washington. The bush family just boarding and continuing to board plus friends and associates of the former president of the United States, George Herbert walker bush about to make on the 747 commissioned as air force one during his presidency, his final journey to washington, d. C. The air force designation for this flight today. You see the honor guard there and the hers that brought the casket of the late president george h. W. Bush. They will come to washington, d. C. , the former president at the u. S. Capital tonight and tomorrow morning. The nation will mourn. The ceremony at the National Cathedral on wednesday and president bush will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife, barbara in College Station on thursday. We watched the bush family board the plane and the honor guard. It has been 12 years since the country has buried a president. Gerald ford in 2006. As you watch this play out, you are reminded again one of the great places and many places that George Herbert walker bush. They share the unique thing. When you see 43 go up the stairs with laura bush to take this flight, i will start with you, jamie. You are closest to the family. You watch the ceremony play out here. Maybe an odd thing to say, but george h. W. Bush loved tradition and ceremony. He had amazing respect for the military and the air force and how this trappings of the presidency, if you will, that its very fitting to watch this play out. Absolutely. I think his respect for the presidency and the office is a very Office Counter point to what was that word that his mother always said . Dont be a brag doesha. We heard the word humble used over and over again. I will tell you from a reliable source, former president bush, when they first came to him and said you need to make your funeral plans, sir. He did not want to have anything to do with this. Then they said this is part of your responsibility. This is part of your duty. He actually got very involved in it. He micromanaged. There are details that were very specific, including what meal and food will be served on the train between houston and College Station. He picked the menu. There were also things that we will see a tremendous amount of pomp and circumstance in honor of the office. There were also things he decided he didnt want to do. So yes, its an honor of the office, but he kept
