in washington. president trump is keeping a low profile so far on this christmas day spending the holiday with his family at his mar a lago resort in florida. the president and the first lady attended services at the church where they were married. on the political front, mr. trump kept up his twitter tirade targeting the fbi. sarah murray joins us from west palm beach, florida. taking aim at the fbi and the deputy fbi director in particular. fill us in. >> reporter: that's right. hardly the usual activities of a christmas holiday, but when it comes to trump, not out of the ordinary. spending the weekend and the run up to christmas day taking aim at the news media and the fbi in particular. the outgoing deputy director. the president aired grievances about the fact that he had a very successful, very productive year and doesn't believe he is getting enough credit for it. he needed to get all of that out of the way and out on twitter before he headed to his christmas eve dinner last night. >> sarah murray, thank you for that report and merry christmas. enjoy the nice weather down there. president trump is touting accomplishments as he approaches his one-year mark in office. he said he deserves more credit than he is getting. let's discuss that. commentators ben ferguson and teeth. merry christmas to you both. >> merry christmas. >> thank you to both of you. let's start with the tweets. the president tweeted over the weekend about the tax cuts and reform bill, including massive alaska drilling and the repeal of the highly unpopular individual mandate and brought it all together as an incredible year. never mind the fake news. we won't even talk about that right now. in terms of what the president is tweeting that he is trying to blow his own horn. he is not alone. politicians do that all the time. is he right that he is not getting as much credit as he might deserve on the issue of keeping promises he made? >> look, i think early in the year, that would probably not be an accurate statement. they had a lot of tough issues that didn't get done, but i agree with him on this one. he has done an awful lot of the things he promised to do. whether it's going after isis or lowering taxes or getting the economy moving the way it is. a lot of people downplayed the incredible economic success through his leadership and policies he had when many of the same people were saying this was going to be dooms day, this exact time last year for wall street and the economy. they were not going to trust the president and he was too erratic for the tastes and likes. i remember having that conversation. if you voted for donald trump, you are happy with how the year ended and you are hoping for more successes early on and not having to wait for the fourth quarter to get the big runs on the board. i understand where he is coming from. >> and let's just take a look at the specifics here. what the president calls major accomplishments. congress too. the tax bill, the obamacare mandate repeal but we have a large asterisk there. that didn't happen. he did get neal gorsuch on the supreme court and a record number of appellate judges and a huge roll back to regulations and drilling in anwr. elections have consequences. if you are a democrat, this is a nightmare and not accomplishments. if you are looking at the mid-term election where getting the base activated and excited, are democrats worried about the fact that he has those accomplishments and they have those accomplishments to bring back to the base? >> i don't think democrats are worried. i think democrats are motivated. we are on a winning streak and we won almost all the elections up for grabs that were december. we won in alabama and atlanta. they feel like they have the wind at their backs and the polls reflect that. if you look at the accomplishments for the past year, neal gorsuch and tax reform are the biggest achievements, but there is a long list of promises he didn't keep. he said he was going to build a wall and repeal and replace obamacare and drain the wacswam and he didn't do that. he said he was going to make america great again and lock uphillry clinton. none of these things happened. now all he has to say is he lowered taxes for the rich people like himself. that's not really the thing he ran on. >> and people that don't have a lot of money. >> he should be ashamed of himself for accomplishing so little for having a republican congress and supreme court. >> you are laughing. >> i am because this is when i know the democrats are truly nervous that he is starting to get footing on issues when they list the things donald trump didn't accomplish when conservatives are looking forward on. i will agree on one thing. other promises that have to come forward, but overall if you are a conservative, you like the way this year ended. if you voted for donald trump, you like the way this year ended with big victories. one thing -- even keith didn't mention it because it's a huge problem for democrats. the economy is in incredibly good shape. the rates at a 17-year low and consumer confidence at a 17-year high. as much as you say no, that's reality on the page. it's bad news for you guys. >> can i tell you why it's not bad news? the economy performed better under president obama. it's true. look at the facts. i wrote a piece about this a couple of weeks ago. hear me out and let's get facts for a change. the job market, we had the lowest monthly job growth this year than in five years. that's a fact. secondly the stock market itself, 25% this year, the dow was higher in president obama's first year. 31%. it was up 31% in obama's first year. let me just say. there was a president before this guy and there was somebody who let us say merry christmas before this. he likes to take credit for everything and he doesn't do everything. merry christmas to you. >> i'm glad that we can all do this in the holiday spirit. ben, republican senator jeff flake who is retiring paints a really bleak picture of your party, of the republican party. if it continues on its present course, i want you to listen. >> you look at the audiences cheering for republicans sometimes. you look out there and say those are the spasms of a dying party when you look at the lack of diversity sometimes. it depends on where you are obviously, but by and large we are appealing to older white men. there just a limited number of them. >> ben, jeff flake has been making a case along these lines, but that phrase spasms of a dying party. quite vivid. do you agree? >> that's exactly what i would expect a guy to say who couldn't win reelection and that's why he is walking away from politics. the same with bob corker. bob corker couldn't get elected dog catcher as much as he wants to act like he is walking away in his own terms. >> they were in trouble and they admit that. >> they were in big trouble. >> no question, but is he raising an important alarm that you and fellow republicans should heed about the demographics of the republican party? >> the answer i would say is absolutely not. i never listen to people that are losing when they played their game and clearly they walked away from where the party was going which was more conservative and not big government. you are looking at two guys that are pretty much -- and i throw corker in there because it's a great example. the party left them and not the other way around. they make promises for certain issues that were true conservative values and that's the reason why they both have very high unapproval ratings in their own states. that's why they are leaving washington. the people of their state would not send them back. i'm not going to worry about it because they couldn't get elected in their own state much less nationwide. if flake said he would run for president, it would be hysterical because his own state doesn't even like him. >> the demographics are not on the republican party's side. that's why you are seeing this orgy of conservative movement. this is the last opportunity. >> we just won a presidential election. >> the party lost six of the last seven popular vote elections. the national presidential elections. they know the demographics are not in their favor. we have latinos are growing rapidly and the raisians are the fastest growing. women are the majority of the population and more and more women are running. i millennials are voting overwhelmingly against republicans with people like roy moore as a symbol of the republican party. that's having a negative impact. keith, you and i agree on roy moore. if there was anyone i am glad lost and this takes away compromise for the year. you and i are happy that roy moore lost. i couldn't stand him and he is a terrible candidate and he doesn't define the republican party. in a hard core republican state, they rejected him. don't act like that's the republican party. >> the majority of white people voted for roy moore. >> thank you for that spirited discussion. >> merry christmas. >> a little bit of off will rails, but we came back. the pope defends immigrants in his traditional christmas ago in 2015 for state senate in virginia allegedly getting money from the clintons. first let's start with a reality check. the fact of the matter is that money came from the governor of virginia. terry mcauliffe. he is an ally of the clintons, but it didn't come from the clinto clintons. let's start with this. it's not new to attack the fbi or top officials, but this personal erroneous information coming from the president of the united states tells you what? >> let me say first in complete disclosure that i signed a letter encouraging chris wray's confirmation as fbi director and i think he say professional. i know he knows the truth that you cannot respond to everything that the school yard bully says. my guess is he is probably laying back knowing when you look at the history of trump and his tweets and the fact that he can't control his twitter thumbs or his mouth, he has given him enough road to hang himself. i don't lead anything in the fact that the director has not responded to this. this is a diversion that the trump team is trying to pull and the president is trying to pull. he uses the classic organized crime playbook for a criminal defendant and that is you attack the investigators and you throw out a punch of red herrings. the fbi and chris wray is not going to fall for that. if we think about it, this is his pattern. what he has forgotten is he is not investigated by barney fife. they are not going to be deterred about the ramblings. >> you think that the president of the united states is acting like a mob boss? >> absolutely. he's attacking everything around him and he's willing to sacrifice a few lieutenants where we have mike flynn out there and manafort out there. as of right now, he has them out there and he is giving them a wink and a nod whether or not he will use a presidential parton and he is doing the classic things you do when you feel the pressure of an organized crime investigation. from the top down, you organize everything you can and out out as many land mines as you can. the underlying reason he was tweeting about him is cnn reported he will leave his post in a couple of months. the president was suggesting
