Beat and tortured him, then snapped his neck cut up the body and dumped it into a river. If you see them call 911 and police say be very, very careful because matt already has experience fleeing the country. They could be almost anywhere tonight. They also may have had help doing what they did. What they did was break out of one of the biggest toughest and most remotely located maximum Security Prisons in the state of new york. How they did it how they cut and crawled their way out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in dannemora is look something straight out of the movies. We are following this all night. Reporter they were supposed to be in their beds in adjoining cells but instead before dawn saturday a routine check turned up something else. They werent actual dummies, but they were they had clothing on and it looked like people were sleeping in the bunks with a sweat shirt hoodie on. Reporter one of a handful of clever moves by this crime duo, richard matt and david sweat, both convicted killers. They were last seen around 10 30 friday night in their cells during a standing count. Their bunks were also checked every two hours during the night but it wasnt until 5 30 a. M. Saturday morning that a guard sounded the alarm. The search revealed that there was a hole cut out of the back of the cell through which mees Inmates Escape these Inmates Escaped. Reporter they tutd cut their way using power tools that still no one knows how they got. The escapees followed a catwalk thats six stories high eventually snaking their way through an elaborate maze of pipes before shimmying through tunnels. The prisoners got their first taste of freedom in years when they popped out of that manhole right there at that yellow tape. This is actually the closest that were allowed to get toy. It was a pretty bold exit plan because right over there is a health club. And its surrounded by homes in this quiet neighborhood. So anyone who might have been outside and might have seen them could have quickly called police. The man shoal just a block and a half from the prison where new York Governor Andrew Cuomo retraced the mens steps. All that cutting. Reporter these are dangerous men. Sweat was serving life without parole for killing a serves deputy in 2002, matt was serving 25 years to life after murdering and dismemmingen a man in 1997. The convicts are the first to escape from maximum security at Clinton Correctional Facility since it opened in 1865 leaving behind this note dripping with sarcasm. It reads, have a nice day. So many Unanswered Questions for authorities, how this prison break go unnoticed with regular bed checks . How could the guards not have heard the sounds of the power tools . And perhaps the biggest question of all, where did those power tools come from . We are looking to see if possibly one a civilian applieeapply employee or a contractor was assisting this escape. Reporter despite more than 150 continues a 50,000 reward for each man and intensive search efforts involving 250 law enforcent, helicopters and blood hounds there is no sign of the escapees. So there are checkpoints all over town because they are trying to find these guys. Open your trunk, please. Reporter sure. One second. We have to open the trunk so they can get a look inside. Should be open now. Yes, it is. Reporter they are going through it. Through our luggage which is back there, making sure there is nothing underneath it. All set maam. Have a good night. All set . Good to go . Thank you. You can see why with checkpoints like these all over town the community is really on edge. But these guys are determined to fine those two inmates. With the prison just 25 miles south of the Canadian Border authorities are concerned warning those to the north there are killers on the loose. Now what do we know about this female prison employee that investigators questioned today . She was questioned as a possible accomplice. She apparently knew these two guys well she worked with them tailoring clothing inside the prison. She was questioned. She wasnt charged. She wasnt arrested. We are also learning new information about whether or not these two guys might have been kauts on surveillance tape. State police say there is limited surveillance tape from inside the facility and it hasnt been fruitful. Turns out there arent any cameras on the corner near the manhole where they came up. They dont know whether they left on foot or sp someone met them at the manhole and picked them up. This note that they left the smiley face does anyone have any explanation for what that means . Its one of the most bizarre items they left behind. They are not sure what it means. Some of them suggested that maybe it means they were digging to china, they are also wondering if there is some type of asian racist message in there as well. It is a big you know what to the prison crew a nasty message left behind by these guys. Seems like nobody here can figure it out exactly. Incredible breakout. Just to give you how much the prison dominates the local landscape, according to the local chamber of commerce it is the second largest employer in the county and a major job source for the people of dannemora including the mayor of the village who oversees the prison laundry Michael Bennet who joins us now. Beyond being mayor you have worked at the prison for 18 years. Do you know the woman ranee just reported on . Are you familiar with the people who do the tailoring or how any of that works . No ive never worked with that woman. And she is in a different part of the facility. In terms of the situation in the town right now i know because you are an employee at the prison you obviously cant spee about what happened or the details of it. But how is the town reacting to this . Initially there was shock. Obviously, this has never happened before. And there was fear you know among a lot of people. But being a prison town a lot of the people within the village work for the department of corrections. And im really amazed at how well the people are handling it. And i think a lot of that has to do with the high number of law personnel that are in our village right now. We saw ranee kay, a reporter getting her vehicle searched as she went through a check point. What kind of Police Presence are you seeing . You said you are seeing large numbers. Are there a lot of checkpoints up . There is a checkpoint on just about every corner within the village. The department of correction is doing most of the checking in the village. And the state police are on the outskirts of the village. What advice do you have for residents . People who have been coming up to you from surrounding areas about these two while they are still at large . Well my main thing would be, make sure you keep your properties secure. And you know be aware of your surroundings at all times. And if you happen to see something, you know make sure you call the state police. Have you ever heard of anything like this out of this prison in particular . No. This is the first time that this has ever happened to my knowledge. Are there a lot of you know cabins places where people could hide out in the surrounding areas . Yeah there is numerous areas, you know different hunting camps. Theres numerous areas that they could be hiding. And in term of getting to canada if that was a destination, how complicated is that . Well its a walk. But it could be done. You know were not that far from the canyon border. But i would have to bet the troopers and the other law enforce. Are keeping a really close watch at that area. And obviously they have contacted canadian authorities as well. Mayor bennet i appreciate your time. A lot more to come including the specifics on what these two were doing timer time for. A victims sister joins us. Well also talk to a pair of top u. S. Marshal about the pattern that fugitives follow and why some manage to stay on the the loose more than others. There is a lot more information we have been gathering just over the last 12 hours or so. And even into this night. Take a look. David sweat on the left. Richard matt on the right. One a cop killer. The other, matt quite literally a butcher and someone with Prior Experience on the run. In a moment what it will take to catch them. First their bloody resumes. Reporter vicious, cunning, extremely violent. Thats how a retired detective describes now 49yearold richard matt. Matt was convicted in 2008 of kidnapping his exboss william pickerson sr. Who own a food delivery business. At the trial, an accomplice testified the man he called rick matt tortured the elderly business man tossing him in a car trunk for 27 hours before snapping his neck. And it didnt stop there. Matt then dismembered pickersons body. The accomplice testifying quote, he cut up the torso, and he said that he threw the legs in the niagara river. Before he could stand trial for that murder he escaped to mexico where he soon killed another american in a bar. He was thrown in a mexican prison and extradited to new york to stand trial for the pickerson homicide. Years earlier, in upstate new york matt had escaped a different prison facility while serving time for burglary. He isthese are really dangerous desperate men. Literally killers. Reporter the second is 35 yearly david sweat serving life without parole for the 2002 murder of a sheriffs deputy. Sweat robbed a gun store when he and his accomplice were confronted by the sheriff. He shot him 12 times. The two men worked in the prison taylor shop with a female employee now suspected of helping the two men break out. Cnn, new york. For some this is deeply personal. Sharon tarsia is the late deputys sister. She joins us on the phone. Sharon what went through your mind when you heard the man who killed your brother escaped from print. I said oh, my god, no way. I had to read it twice. I couldnt believe it. What kind of guy is this david sweat . I think it is very evil and is deserves the same thing done that he did to my brother. I just cant i dont know how anybody could do what he did to my brother. I just all he was doing was his job. And then he gets ran over and shot. Its just i just i cant even stand the thought of it. Do you believe the prison is at fault here . Maybe should should have been able to keep a better eye on these guys, keep them behind bars. I think they should because i dont know how anybody could drill a hole through a steel wall and not hear a drill going. It sees suspicious. Is this guy somebody you have thought of in the time he has been incarcerated or after the trial after he was convicted of killing your brother . Is it somebody you kind of put out of your mind . I never put him out of my mind because i always think about what he did and how awful this guy is and disgusting. And you cannot stop thinking about what he did. Its just this will never go out of my mine. Tell us about your brother. What kind of guy was he . He was very support. I look he always gave me advice. Like if i ever needed advice he would be right there. He always helped me out when i needed someone. He would do anything for anybody. He thats how he was. He was a good cop. And like even if he pulled somebody over or something he would try to give them you know if he he tried give them a chance. Sharon im sorry for what you are going through, for what your family is going through right now. Lets hope they catch this guy quickly. Thank you. I do, too. A lot of people now. More now on how fugitives run and how had he get caught. A former commander of the u. S. Marshals Service RegionalFugitive Task for for newark and new jersey and another who dufrs washington, d. C. Area. Robert i know your office is helping run down leads right now. How concerned are you about these fugitives . How much of a danger do you believe they pose . We are very concerned. Guys like this they have nothing to loose with the sentencing they were serving on the run. My fear is for the Patrol Officer, the uniformed Patrol Officer who might pull them over unknowingly. And for some traffic violation. I understand you believe these guys might be on the run together because of what your sources have told you about their relationship in prison. What do you know about them . I mean it is a good possibility, anderson. Im not kplutdly sure and cant confirm or deny that but they were very close in prison. As they had said earlier, they didnt share a cell. They were next to each other. They were always seen together in yard. They ate together for the past several years. So you know, they are friends. Are they together . We dont know. If they Stay Together does that make it easier from a Law Enforcement standpoint . Because you essentially then you dont have two separate manhunts going on . Exactly. I mean you have got one manhunt at that point. If they do split up selfleads are come in from a vaeftd of different areas that need to be vetted. And certainly our folks and our Task Force Working with the new York State Troopers they are not going to leave any stones unturned. They are doing a fullcourt press. I know weve made both of these two of our top 15 wanted fugitives in the u. S. Marshals service. Well dedicate all our resources and equipment and manpower and money to get these two apprehended as quick as possible. Robert how difficult is it to track down fugitives in a situation like this . We are talking about a remote area. There arent a lot of surveillance cameras. The mayor said there is hunting cabins around that may be unoccupied that somebody could use close to the Canadian Border. Its very difficult. But i have great faith in the new York State Police department and our task force up there. And they have the cooperation of our entire agency. But more than that what we need is the public to help. And thats why i dont want to speculate whether they are together or apart weve seen lenny knows we have seen it happen whether they were arrested togetherful sometimes they split up once they get help. But i dont want a hotels clerk who may have seen one of them not to call because they think they may be together. Anything is a possibility. We really need the public to call in. And especially with some of the specifics like the tattoo on that guys fingers, the ifb. Thats something a cabbie or a Convenience Store clerk might remember. Dont hesitate to call. We have that number. Its up on the screen or you can put it up on the screen. We have people answering that phone 24 hours a day ready to follow up on leads anywhere across the country. We will have the tip line throughout the hour. In your experience lenny, is there a pattern . Do fugitives tend to stay close . Try to wait it out . Do they try to get as far away as possible . Or is it impossible to say, every case is different. Every case is different. There is no telling. These guys did they get help from the inside. All sorts of speculations goingan. The lead investigators im sure have interviewed the right people from Prison Guards to workers. I know there was a lot of renovation doing done inside the prison and there was a lot of equipment that could have been used and apparently was used for their breakout. What was their plan b once they got out . If there was help on the inside were there phone calls made . Was money brought into the prison . Were there meetings on the outside by folks from the inside . There is questions that i dont have the answers to but i am sure they are crossing their ts and. Ing their is in command post. Part of what they do is check who has been to the prison to visit them phone calls that they made and obviously past associations they had prior to getting to that prison . Absolutely. We leave no stone unturned. We are going to check past acquaintances, family members, we are doing interviews surveillance. We are doing everything to help the new York State Police department. And even if people have knew these guys before dont hesitate to call. Call us and let us know if you know friends that they had, girlfriends, family members, any of that can help us in our investigation. And robert when people say its close to the Canadian Border they are afraid of them crossing over into canada does that matter in term of the hand muntd manhunt . It is a good possibility because they are so close. We have a canyon liaison program. We have monthly meetings with canyon Law Enforcement authorities. They have been notified and we are in contact with them. We can chase them there. Robert and lenny thank you. Just ahead, the maximum security prison that the two convicted killers broke out of is loan as little siberia. Tom foreman shows us why it is called that and how tough it is inside the prison walls. David sweat and richard matt were serving sentences and broke outs of their cells into the bowels of the prison and eventually surfaced through a manhole. How they were able to do this and who may have helped them remains a mystery. In a phrase its in the middle of nowhere. This is in the North Country of new york. It is very sparsely populated. Only about 25 miles from the canyon border. And full of a lot of woods and a few scattered homes and underhg capins. Lots of places to hide out. In fact its so far north and so cold much of the time many of the men inside the prison refer to it as little siberia. Its separated from the outside world by a 60foot wall and the world inside can be a harsh place. Starts with the inmates. Look at the numbers. About 2,000 inmates inside the main prison there. 90 of them are in for violent crimes. That is a high number. It is the biggest prison in the state. The median age lts matters. Look at that 39. And the median minimum sentence 14 years. All of this is a formula for a very potential violence in this area. Beyond that there is more. The racial makeup really counts here. The vast majority of these inmates are black or latino 3 4 of them. Yet with more than 900 Corrections Officers here only a very tiny sliver are anything other than white officers five in one recent survey were latino. Everybody else is white. Again, possibly a cause for tension when you look at the whole situation. And they have had tension here before. Three quarters of the inmates said they had been subjected to racial harassment. Beyond that they say the fights are common and the suicide is actually high here. One of the highest in the state among all the other prisons. All of that adds up to a place that is a difficult place for any inmate to live. Much of the economy in the rooej region relies on this, prison right. Yeah thats why its hard to pick all of this. This has been here since the 1800s. This whole town out here absolutely rely on the jobs connected to this prison. And there are other towns up in new york that have a very similar equation. So every time they talk about maybe taking it down or moving it or changing it in some substantial way local politicians say look there are going to be a lot of jobs lost here and that makes meaningful change very difficult despite a troubled history. Jonathan fleming knows how tough it is inside the Clinton Correctional Facility. He served nearly 25 years there after he was wrongfully convicted of murder. Thats a story in and of itself. Last year he was finally exonerated cleared in the killing and joins me now. Thank you for being with us. When you heard these two guys were able to escape did it surprise you . Yes it surprised me very much because the security there is very tight. I was surprise to hear they had escaped. When you are serving time there, do you know i mean do you have a sense of the layout of the prison . Because it seems like these guys knew you know the bowels of the prison the structures where to go. We dont know the layout of the prison. Only thing we know we know where the yard is at, the programs is at, the mess hall and stuff like that. But we dont know the lay out of the prison no we dont. How do you think they could have found that out . My opinion, i really think some kind way they had a map, i believe it was a inside job. I really do. Because also the fact they had access to imt request, zrils things like that. You were saying if you got theres drills in the prison shop but you have to check those out and you have to return them. And if they are missing thats a big deal. Yes. Always. If you go to a program and you are in your shop and you take out a hacksaw blade or a hammer or whatever you take out of the shop you have to return it and you have to give them your id card to get these tools of even if you are a electrician or a plumber, they give you a tool bo. When you leave the shop you have to come back with that stuff. If anybody ever come up missing they will shut everybody down who was in that program and look for that tool. They were in an area where they got special privileges because of good behavior. What kind of privileges would they get . I mean, sit sort of extra time watching television . Do you know . Well as for honor block they have stoves because you know in the regular population they dont have stoves. They stoves. They have refridge raters. Their cells stay open all day except during the count time when they take the count. Those are basically the privileges they get and also they get recreation every night. In clinton one half of the jail get rec one night and one get it the other night. They get to go out with both sides of the prison. Cnn has been reporting there is a woman who has been interviewed who apparently worked with them in the tailoring shop inside the prison. I didnt really are you familiar with the tailoring shop . Is it making clothes . Yes. Im familiar with it. They make they make all the facility clothes. They make all the prison clothes for the whole new york state. They make the pants, the shirts. This is what they do. She would be an employee or she would be from outside the prison who comes in and works there . Yes, she would be a civilian that actually come inside and work every day. They a few of them that run the tail or shop. How tough was this facility compared to others you were in . Was this different in some way than others. Clinton is about the same as all the other maximum security facilities. They are all the same. It is brutal. It is a brutal existence with no hope when you are in prison. No hope. Thats right, no hope. This isnt about this breakout but i have got to ask, after 25 years what is it like to have been exonerated . I think i would be furious. I dont have no anger. Im just blessed that im out here. You know . And im just happy, living life. You know . But i mean, i had happened. There is nothing i can do about it but just live the rest of my life. How has the adjustment been . Good. I just got my righthanded friendship sunday. I just got my righthanded fellowship. I go to Church First Baptist Church in east elm hurst, no. Pastor young is my pastor. It is a great experience for me. I am in the church i help out and volunteer and everything. I appreciate you coming in and telling us what you know about this facility its an honor to meet you. Thank for having me. Jonathan policemening. A reminder we have got the tip line up right now at the bottom of your screen. Thats the number to call if you have information that might lead to the capture of these two fugitives. Before the fatal encounter he was under 24 hour surveillance. Authorities say he was planning to attack Police Officers. Their use of deadly force under investigation. The video made public today does answer some questions. Doesnt exactly shed light on others. The images are blurry. Alexander field walks us through them. Reporter shots fired an fbi agents and a boston Police Officer. The terror suspect falls to the ground. The takedown captured by a surveillance camera 50 yards from the shooting. Moments efrlier the man the fbi has been watching around the clock heads toward a bus stop. Three officers approach. Two more follow. Thor Authorities Say the is the is armed with a militarystyle knife. The video shows the officers backing up then two of them fired deadly shots. Watch it again. Slowed down. You can clearly see the suspect moving forward and the officers retreating. We approached this individual just to question him. No one could have foreseen what unravelled at that point. I dont think at this point he was going to go down very easy. There were multiple multiple requests for him to put down that weapon. He was given every chance. Reporter in a statement, rahims family says the video doesnt prove that. The video does not show mr. Rahim possessing holding to brandishing a weapon of any sort much less a knife. The video doesnt show him planning scheming or plotting an attack on Police Officers. To the contrary the video shows mr. Rahim walking to bus stop on the way to work. Does not show him being the aggressor. On the morning, Officials Say that intercepted a phone call where he said he was ready to attack telling his father a final goodbye. Eight days earlier he told an associate im going to go after them those boys in blue. A facebook under an alias shows rahim was on the fbis radar since 2012. Dammartinen goele fbi calling my phone. He said sir we have allegations regarding you i came by your house a thieu times but kept missing you. The fbi suspect commenting on the Facebook Post but after years of surveillance officers stepped in on tuesday trying to stop rahim from boarding a bus. The surveillance camera also catch as school bus passing by. Officials say one officer noticed the bus and waited for it to pass before opening fire. This video, does it change things in the investigation much . You know anderson as you point out the images are blurry but it does give perspective on what happened out here. It will be considered by the District Attorney as he works to determine whether or not charges should be brought here or if the officers were justified in their actions typically a video like this wouldnt be released until the end of the investigation. But given the controversy that surround so many Police Shootings the District Attorney felt it was appropriate to release this to the public and anderson allow the video to speak for itself. There is more happening tonight. Amaryl walker has the 360 bulletin bulletin. What this was was a teenage party out of control. Reporter he says we didnt see what happened before the video starts. You missed the fights that were happening, you missed the Security Guard trying to he is court the people jumping over the fence into the pool trying to escort them out. What you also missed is the Police Officer telling people to go home go home go home. Not every cause is a just cause for us to be up in arms about. Is there certain things that need to be addressed and focused on . Absolutely. But this is not one of them. Reporter in this subdivision 45 minutes north of dallas manicured lawns and crisp big homes surround the Community Pool the Perfect Place for a party. A sign hang at the site of fridays incident. For now the pool is closed for treatment. Nick we heard about it a little bit earlier from that gentleman, but do we know exactly what happened at the pool party and the reason the police were called . There were fights. Reporter initially, anderson thats right, a fight was reported here. Neighbors that ive spoken to said they called because they saw a fight happening they saw teenagers getting out of the control. Some other teenagers though that we talked to believe they were targeted. There were reports racial slurs were thrown at some of the teenagers. I talked with one witness who said he witnessed it before the cell phone was recording and he didnt hear that but others have. As i mentioned the community here is divided. By and large the respects we have spoken here are vocally supporting the officer, defending his acts others calling for his resignation. Within the last hour we heard from the police union in mckinney. They say this was absolutely not racially motivated and there is no way that anyone in the Police Department here practices biased or racial policing. I want to bring in a Law Enforcement analyst and retired nypd detective. Regard of what happened at the pool prior to the video rolling. Just watching what happened this the video the officer is clearly not deescalating the situation. Doesnt seem to be doing it by how do you see him handling this 14yearold girl. I dont think he handled that 14yearold girl correctly at all. As you can see in the video she sitting there before he grabs her. She is already pretty much down on the ground. I think this officer is out of control the way he is acting of like you said he is not trying to deescalate. He is escalating the whole situation by his vase and he is the only officer running around like crazy. There are several officers there. And after he pulls some other teens come over after he has sort of been aggressive man handled and pushed down this young girl you see the other teenagers there. And then you pulls out a gun. Right. Clearly the officer seemed to intercede putting their arm on this officer saying calm down. Thats what i think, too, by watching it. You can see i went home and i slowed this video down a couple of times and i watch it. When the young man in blue that comes around to that officer that officer might be able to say that he received a threat at that time because he was coming around. From his perspective. From my perspective as watching it here it doesnt appear to me to be a threat. The fact is when they run away he still keeps his gun out and chases after a couple kids instead of holstering his weapon. And it dogs look like the other officers are saying put that thing away. This is a 14yearold girl in a bathing suit. Its not like she had a weapon. They got a call. There is fights they had to find out what was going on.
