welcome to this cnn "cnn sunday morning" for this july 11th. >> i am kate bolduan. it's 8:00 a.m. in atlanta, and we are keeping a close watch on the gulf this morning. nearly a mile under the water, robots you can see. the cameras have been moving around all morning. they are working to replace the cap in the gushing oil well. it's a lot of oil spewing into the gulf. we have a live update straight ahead. today is a day you will not see again in four years. world cup happening today. do you know who is in it? yes, the orange crush. the netherlands taking on spain today. let's give alook right now at some of the stories making headlines. and it's a deadly month in afghanistan, this following june being the deadliest months so far for troops there. in june we saw 102 soldiers killed, and now yesterday we saw six american soldiers killed. one of them was in an accidental explosion. hatie, it has been six months that killed 230,000 people. 1.5 million left homeless. billions and billions of dollars pledged here, but only a fraction has been delivered so far. john kerry has reported that there is a lack of leadership. and then a total solar ae collapse happening around 2:15 eastern time, but you cannot see it in the states. the moon will completely cover the sun, and you will not be able to see it here, but folks on cook island can see it. and then now to the oil. things could get worse before they get better. rate now oil is pouring out at a fast rate. now, why did they take the cap off? because they want to put a better cap on, and it should be in place for the next several days that can capture more oil. the cap designed for the tight seal could siphon the oil. >> and bp said it is making the most of the good weather and have views making around the clock to help get the new cap in place. reynolds wolf is there to look at today's game plan. how are things going? >> reporter: you mention the weather. we have been handed a bit of good luck, good fortune, whatever you want to call it. for the next ten days, it should be pretty calm. it should be free of tropical systems. the endeavor we are talking about, the placement of the new containment dome, it's not just something small, it's enormous. we're talking about something that ways 150,000 pounds that will be put in place and left in position sometime today and tomorrow, and then in the next four days, once it's over it and it is supposed to have a perfect seal, but then it will be bringing the oil up to the service where it will be collected by four different ships. the riser in place was never perfect. it was bringing a million gallons per day. the amount of oil that the government believes that was actually coming up out of the well was anywhere from 1.5 to . 2.5 million gallons per day. and this should take care of the 500 gallons that were seeping out. that should be just picture perfect for this situation. but, still, even this is temporary. this is not going to be the perfect fix, even if all goes as planned. what they need are the two relief wells, which they do think will be completed by the middle of august. it looks like the relief wells will be the final solution to the seemingly never-ending problem. >> we know august is the guestment of when the final solution will be had. but do you think everything will be going as planned? so things have not been going as planned, so if you look at the replacement cap, it should go as they hoped. >> reporter: yeah, you are right. on paper it looks like it's fail proof. sure enough, it looks like this hopefully will be the thing. it's hard to believe, but a month ago we were talking about a junk shot, and we were talking about pieces of rope and golf balls being fired at this, and hopefully that would have solved the problems, but again that was one of the many things that they tried and it failed. we were saying earlier, think about something like a fire hose going off full blast and then taking a bottle ceilisealing it. >> thank you so much, reynolds. >> reporter: you bet. president obama, he will be monitoring the situation in the gulf as he attends other meet thgz week. here is what is on his schedule that we know so far. tomorrow, he host the president of dominican republic, and on thursday he is in holland, michigan. he will be at a ceremony for a compact power plant. >> the first lady has her own schedule. a busy one as well. she will kick off the week in kansas city. she will make a speech. a big issue for her has been childhood obesity. yesterday i spoke to the n krchc naacp president. >> would you say it's not the focus of the senate or the congress or the white house? >> congress went home, and the senate went home and let unemployment insurance expire. they took a hot dog approach, as if a family that was surviving on $300 could afford to buy a firecracker when they cut them off because they don't have the will to debate it. >> naacp not the only group meeting this weekend. a group of the largest spanish civil rights country in the country are meeting this weekend also. reconstruction has come to a standstill in haiti. >> we will look at that story today. but
