Roots of music is an after School Program dedicated to serving the kids of new orleans. We take kids from all around the city, from over 30, 40 schools around the city, bring them to one safe location where they learn how to play music, new orleans music. They learn how to be friends before enemies, we teach them skills. You know what i love about this, i love about new orleans is the diversity here. Right. It is full of beautiful black people celebrating, and you are helping the young youth here, especially young black children here. Why is that so important to you . Because we find that they need something to do. All kids need something to do to be the best kids you could possibly see. Look at these kids here. They come half of these kids never picked up an instrument a day in their life and now theyre producing music. Thats what it is all about, teaching them how to survive, how to make it out of life. How long have you been doing this . 15 years. This is the 15th year. And you have Success Stories . I have a bunch of Success Stories. This is the most wonderful place in the world you can come. New orleans is a world class city. Theres no place better in the world to get what you grew up what, what i live with every day, the food, the architecture, the music, the culture, the art, everything about where we live and breathe every day is why so many millions of people come here every year. It is time to come back to new orleans. Can you explain to people when i first got here one of the first things you did was hand me this towel. This is a mardi gras thing. You sit here and throw your towel and do everything you have to do. We are a city and we celebrate everything. You know, when i come here, i usually go to jackson square, i try to buy local artists, local artwork. Especially since katrina, ive been buying a lot of the artwork. Ive seen a number of different artists who have come to new orleans, who stayed here, are making their living here, who believe in the city. Where does that come from . Man, its the lifestyle in new orleans. You know . You just be yourself. Used to be cheap to live here, now its not. But its the energy here in new orleans is so thick. It was laid down over 100 years ago, you know. From mardi gras to the second lines. The floats, the parades, it never ends. Not to mention the food or the art. And lionel over there, him and i, we go back over 25 years. 25 years. How is the city, how has it changed since katrina, you think . Especially the art world and the artists . We had a couple of slow years. But i think its blossomed bigtime. Theres a ton of awesome artists in new orleans right now. I got to tell you, some of the best artists ive seen, not only painters but musically that ive seen you know ive noticed the art scene here, it has become theres always a jazz influence. But now theres a bluegrass influence. Theres a country influence. Have you noticed that . Absolutely. I paint it all. Yeah, i mean you know, i love to one of My Favorite Things to do is sit in the back of a club like the maple leaf and paint some live music from new orleans. Get down. Get down.
