from the same party was this, the republican national committee characterizing the attack on the capitol as legitimate political discourse and punishing two members from serving on the committee investigating january 6. there is this, a cnn exclusive that the committee has evidence casting doubt on another party member's fuzzy account on that day. jim jordan. in spite of the possibility that he could be implicated in to what amounted to an attempted coup. redeeming it somewhat, both the party and the day, mike pence who once called january 6 one day in january. this afternoon while speaking to the federalist society, he broke with the former president. >> january 6th was a dark day in the history of the united states capitol. lives were lost. many were injured. thanks to the courageous action of the capitol police the violence was quelled, the capitol secured and we reconvened the congress the very same day to finish our work under the constitution of the united states and the laws of this country. >> the former vice president spoke to his role that day taking direct aim at the former president. >> the only role congress has with respect to the electoral college is to open and count votes submitted and certified by the states. no more, no less. but there are those in our party that believe that as the presiding officer of the joint session of congress that i possess unilateral authority to reject electoral college votes. i heard this week that president trump said that i had the right to overturn the election. president trump is wrong. i had no right to overturn the election. the presidency belongs to the american people and the american people alone. >> just a reminder this never has been in doubt until the former administration or until 147 republican lawmakers either to please the president pandered to their constituents or cast votes on the 6tho overturn results in contested states. mike pence being able to overturn the election is not something the former president dreamed up a year ago. he said so just this week. given the climate what mike pence said today constitutes a brave stand, as does this at the rare few within the party actually willing to speak the truth about the election on camera. >> joe biden won the election. i don't know what more i can say. joe biden won the election. the role of the vice president in that is ceremonial. they counted the electoral ballots. members of congress voted to certify. joe biden won the election. >> got a full report from randy in the next hour. the sad fact is that at this moment not in the republican mainstream. here is what is. today the republican national committee censured liz cheney and adam kinzinger for serving on the house select committee. the resolution accuses the two of participating in a democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse. that is what the rnc says. that is what they are calling this. it is hard to imagine this is legitimate political discourse. and then again it is hard to imagine josh hawley raising his fists in solidarity that day to the gathering mob. yes, those were the exact words of the resolution that were adopted. the rnc chairman tried to scurry away putting out a statement saying that had nothing to do with the violence at the capitol. mitt romney tweeted this today, shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience. and this republican party that is a brave tweet. that is about it. heis outlier. cheney and kinzinger are outcasts despite being conservatives and the likes of jim jordan who we eluded to at the top of the broadcast, they are the ones that speak for today's gop. joining us now a conservative lawyer, george conway. clearly this was vice president pence's strongest rebuke of the former president. i wish we played the applause at the federalist society, because it wasn't like there was a rousing standing ovation and he was carried out on the shoulders of the members of the federalist society after that. >> i'm not able to judge the amount of applause on the video. the conservative lawyers for the most part agree with pence and were appalled what happened january 6th and have no qualms about saying that. that is what happened with, you know, bill barr. bill barr went in. you know, to his credit you can criticize him for other things, but he told the president that no, you can't seize the ballot boxes or voting machines and he told the president to his face in the oval office, president trump that you lost the election and there is no base to claim fraud and he got screamed at it for it and all of the lawyersa the justice department that threatened to resign. that is why trump had a lousy set of lawyers in the end. the real lawyers and law firms wouldn't help him. you know, i think it makes absolute sense for pence to have picked this audience to make this statement at this time. >> well, the context of this is also important. we have seen pence aides testifying one by one cooperating to the january 6th committee. we found out they are going to receive records from the national archives. how do you think the former president will react to pence's comments. what does it do to pence's standing for his own presidential ambitions? >> well, i think we already know that. we already saw that. i think what really triggered the speech this week was the former president's statement that he issued over the weekend where he basically said that the person that should be investigated is mike pence for not overturning the election. he is urging an investigation of mike pence, which is completely insane. i think, you know, there is no upside for mike pence in donald trump anymore if trump is going to be saying that. it is just better for mike pence in the eyes of history to take ownership of that in a more emphatic way, which is what he did today to his great credit. >> does it make any sense that the rnc put out the official resolution equating a violent attack on the capitol with, you know, i want to get the wording exactly right, with legitimate -- i forgot the wording. legitimate political discourse. >> right. if they wanted to make clear between political discourse and the violence at the capitol they could have been more specific but they didn't. they are lumping everybody together, including the insurrectionists. trump is talking about pardoning these people and he is not making a distinction between the people charged with seditious conspiracy and those that watched the rally and went home. i think the criticism from the republican national committee is that somehow the january 6 committee exceeded their mdate and have gone beyond what happened that day. but it hasn't, really. you can't just look at what happened within a two-block radius of capitol hill for two hours on january 6. it did not just happen accidentally. it did not just happen randomly. i don't know who they are talking about when they are talking about legitimate political discourse. the people breaking glass. are they talking about the people that put up the gallows to say hang mike pence. the people that signed fake electoral votesa at the behest of the tru campaign. is it legitimate political discourse for john eastman and jeffrey clark to basically make fake theories overruling the constitution and 12th amendment and electoral count act of 1887. those two guys. is it legitimate political discourse, those two that pled the fifth amendment before the january 6 committee? i don't think so. if somebody was engaged in that they have nothing to fear from the january 6 committee or anything else. >> that mitt romney is now such an outlier in the party, a man that was the nominee for the party is extraordinary. bill cassidy speaking out against the censure of cheney and kinzinger. it is stunning. >> stunning and sad. we have gone from, you know, cowardice to depravity really in the republican party in the rnc. it is horrific. >> george conway, i appreciate you think with us as always. >> thank you, anderson. >> coming up new exclusive cnn reporting establishing what one january 6 figure has been reluctant to pin down. when did congressman jim jordan speak with the former president on january 6th and what to make economically and politically of today's strong job about what the house committee knows about jim jordan's conversation with the former president on the day of the attack. the congressman either can't quite or won't quite say. did you speak with him before during or after the capitol was attacked? >> i spoke with him that day, i think after. i don't know when those conversations happened. obviously confused or hazy. now here he is in october against steve bannon. >> of course i talked to the president. i have been clear about that. i talked to him all of the time. i don't recall the number of times. >> was it before, during or after the attack. >> i talked to the president after the attack. >> so later in the hearing congressman jordan said "i may have talked to him before" i don't know. but i had nothing to do with any of this. still does not clear it up. but there is new reporting. what have you learned, paul? >> jordan's recollection of that day has been inconsistent at best. two sources tell cnn the house select committee has records showing jordan spoke with the former president for ten minutes on the morning of january 6. now remember that afternoon jordan took to the house floor to object to the certification of biden's electoral college win less than an hour before pro-trump supporters attacked the u.s. capitol. these records were given to the committee after trump lost the bid at the supreme court to keep them out of the committee's hands and reveal a request to get jordan on the phone at the white house residence followed by this ten minute call. jordan was asked about it today and he said he had multiple calls with trump on january 6 but could only confirm he spoke with trump after he left the house floor and did not remember whether they spoke that morning. a lawyer for trump and the spokesman did not respond to the request for comment. >> do we know what time the ten minute call was? >> not at this point. we know it was in the morning and trump left the white house around 11:00a.m. i don't think we know the time of the call. >> could be the fall out here? >> well, jordan has refused a request to voluntarily cooperate with the house committee's investigation and in the letter requesting his cooperation the committee said they wanted to ask him about meetings he had with white house officials and trump in the weeks leading up to the attack. the committee is waiting to decide if they want to issue a subpoena for their colleague. the house rules committee chairman tweeted this cnn reporting directly contradicts jordan's testimony to the rules committee last year and tweeted suggesting it might be time for jordan to speak honestly about what happened. >> yeah. appreciate it. thank you. i spoke to chairman mcgovern just before air time. congressman, thanks so much for joining us. when jim jordan was asked a similar question in the same hearing by a republican congressman he said i may have talked to him before. i don't know. him in this case being the former president. do you think congressman jordan did not remember a ten minute call with the sitting president of the united states? >> how can you not remember a call with the president of the united states? i asked him specifically and he said after. he was very, very explicit. it does not seem possible to me that anybody can't recall talking to the president of the united states. you know, clearly there is a contradiction between what he said to me and what we now know as a result of the january 6 committee. i think he owes it to the country to go before the january 6 committee and answer questions. >> it is not just any day. in the past jim jordan said i speak to the president every day. every day is not january 6. january 6 was an extraordinary day. anybody that spoke to the president on that day i think would remember. >> right. somebody that spoke to the president before the attack came upon the capitol. i would like to know what they talked about. i mean every day we learn more and more about what went on leading up to january 6. everything from the president wanting to use the military to seize voting machines to finding documents he tore up personally that are being put back together. there is no doubt it hads it roots in the west wing. we have members of congress that are covering up for the president or they may be complicit in this. so i think that it is important for him to answer questions before the january 6 commission. i want to know all that he knows. >> you say that you think that it is important that he do it. do you think that he actually will though? i mean there is -- >> look, i think that he owes it to the country. i think he owes it to the country. anderson, i was the last person off of the house floor on january 6. i assumed the chair as speaker pelosi was whisked away. i saw these rioters trying to get at us by smashing the window in the speaker's gallery. people died. police officers were wounded. staffers were traumatized that day. for a member of congress to turn a blind eye to that and to try to cover up or pledge his allegiance to the former president. he owes the american people the truth. we need to get at the truth. >> the list of behavior is a long one. do you think there is a clear-cut answer. >> well, i am not an expert on all of that. you know, i leave that one to the attorneys. one of the reasons that i feel so strongly that republicans not take control of the house and the senate in the midterms. it is tantamount to turning the keys over to the insurrectionists. jim jordan is the ranking republican on the judiciary committee. he would be the chairman of the judiciary committee. let that sink in. he owes it to his colleagues and all of those that suffered on that day and to the american people to tell us what the conversation was about and anything else that he knows that is important to the committee understanding what happened that day. >> congressman jim mcgovern, thank you for your time. >> all the best. >> coming up tonight, the surprising jobs number president biden is clearly thankful for a conversation from the wise and if the biden administration can capitalize on it heading into midterms. and proactive alerts on market events. that's decision tech. only from fidelity. >> president biden spending this evening at his delaware home. he left the white house at the end of a far more encouraging week at the white house than he has had in a while. the president celebrating monumental economic news at home, the economy adding 467,000 jobs last month. revised numbers show employers added 6.6 million in biden's first year in office. >> history has been made here. it comes along side the largest drop in unemployment rate in a single year on record. the largest reduction in childhood poverty ever recorded in a single year and the strongest economic growth the country has seen in 40 years. >> the president noted the economic clouds from inflation and his approval ratings remain underwater. was the white house expecting the report to be as positive as it was? >> not even close. they were pretty relieved today when it came out, anderson. they have been preparing reporters saying they did not believe it would be a good jobs report. look when the data was collected. you were seeing millions of people staying out of work. they were worried it would be another one of the bleak job reports. it has been really unpredictable and economists have been way off in their predictions. you definitely sensed the sense of relief from officials today talking about the numbers. >> clearly the president wanted to sell the success of the numbers to the american people. how does the white house plan to make the most of this? >> i think this is a jobs report the president can talk about the numbers and what they show and talking about the american rescue plan, the infrastructure plan passed in the fall and the effects you will see from that and proof my plan on the economy is working. anderson, what they have to do with that is to talk about the domestic legislation stalled on capitol hill, the build back better plan which senator manchin said he would not vote for in december. the president also acknowledged the inflation numbers. gas is higher than people expect them to be. groceries are higher than people expect them to be. they are working to address that. the question of how quickly those numbers come down and what is in his capacity to do will affect the way he sells the numbers that came out in this report today. >> stay with us. john king, could a strong labor market be a sign of hope for this white house in the midterms? >> well, it is a sign of hope, anderson. if you are the president, his team or a democrat, february 4th looks a hell of a lot better than january 4. you have the new job numbers and the revisions. there is a bit of momentum. is one job report going to fix the president? absolutely not. he needs another one and another and another one. we have been on this roller coaster, everybody whether you are a democrat, republican, independent. you are exhausted. you are anxious and frustrated from covid and the economic domino effect of covid. he needs the covid numbers to keep coming down as well. where are we easter sunday, memorial day. are the jobs numbers continuing to be great and covid numbers down. the president could get a reassessment from the american people. the there is a kick in the teeth from inflation. >> we heard from t obama administration they feel there was not enough done to highlight the progress they made before the 2010 midterms. >> you heard the president saying talking about the job numbers yosaw overall, if you can't remember the last time you saw that, you have never seen it. it never happened before. it is record-shattering. we saw record-shattering job losses because of the pandemic. i think the white house is trying to hammer home the message of something positive, positive, positive. there is also inflation. you can't tell people how to feel. i think one other thing they will true i to highlight in the coming months, look at the revisions we got from the labor department saying actually in november and december, there were 700,000 more jobs than we estimated initially. and i think that is something the white house looks at. the job reports come out. you see the numbers and they are bad or way off and they are revised upwards later on. that is after it is already in the minds of people here is what the jobs report looks like. here is what the economy looks like. >> everybody knows s james carville. i want to show a comparison here in the last two administrations, a little over a year in former president obama had a sky-high unemployment rating but higher approval rating than biden in their first terms. president trump, low unemp unemployment. >> it is not how most voters think. how do voters feel? i remember the 1992 campaign when james carville was using that campaign. the bush campaign was furious. all of the numbers supported them. president bush cited the statistics. people didn't want to be lectured by a politician. it is how do people feel. watch the president's approval rating, consumer sentiment, the right track, wrong track number. those numbers have to change. history is against them in a midterm. the math is against them. they need to change the psychology of the american people and if you lecture them, that is risky. the president needs months of them. he needs people to exhale and feel better and not be as mad. i don't need a pinata. everybody wants to hit something because they are so frustrated from two years of covid. even if the economy is perfect for democrats and covid gets better, history is against them. he needs help from republicans. what is going on with the lighting behind you? are you at a disco? >> a lot of people are tweeting, asking about this. it is because of the olympics. the white house is lit up tonight. it is for the olympics. go team usa. also it is a disco. they have to make some money. >> i see, okay. thank you. all right. john king as from the same party was this, the republican national committee characterizing the attack on the capitol as legitimate political discourse and punishing two members from serving on the committee investigating january 6. there is this, a cnn exclusive that the committee has evidence casting doubt on another party member's fuzzy account on that day. jim jordan. in spite of the possibility that he could be implicated in to what amounted to an attempted coup. redeeming it somewhat, both the party and the day, mike pence who once called january 6 one day in january. this afternoon while speaking to the federalist society, he broke with the former president. >> january 6th was a dark day in the history of the united states capitol. lives were lost. many were injured. thanks to the courageous action of the capitol police the violence was quelled, the capitol secured and we reconvened the congress the very same day to finish our work under the constitution of the united states and the laws of this country. >> the former vice president spoke to his role that day taking direct aim at the former president. >> the only role congress has with respect to the electoral college is to open and count votes submitted and certified by the states. no more, no less. but there are those in our party that believe that as the presiding officer of the joint session of congress that i possess unilateral authority to reject electoral college votes. i heard this week that president trump said that i had the right to overturn the election. president trump is wrong. i had no right to overturn the election. the presidency belongs to the american people and the american people alone. >> just a reminder this never has been in doubt until the former administration or until 147 republican lawmakers either to please the president pandered to their constituents or cast votes on the 6tho overturn results in contested states. mike pence being able to overturn the election is not something the former president dreamed up a year ago. he said so just this week. given the climate what mike pence said today constitutes a brave stand, as does this at the rare few within the party actually willing to speak the truth about the election on camera. >> joe biden won the election. i don't know what more i can say. joe biden won the election. the role of the vice president in that is ceremonial. they counted the electoral ballots. members of congress voted to certify. joe biden won the election. >> got a full report from randy in the next hour. the sad fact is that at this moment not in the republican mainstream. here is what is. today the republican national committee censured liz cheney and adam kinzinger for serving on the house select committee. the resolution accuses the two of participating in a democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse. that is what the rnc says. that is what they are calling this. it is hard to imagine this is legitimate political discourse. and then again it is hard to imagine josh hawley raising his fists in solidarity that day to the gathering mob. yes, those were the exact words of the resolution that were adopted. the rnc chairman tried to scurry away putting out a statement saying that had nothing to do with the violence at the capitol. mitt romney tweeted this today, shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience. and this republican party that is a brave tweet. that is about it. heis outlier. cheney and kinzinger are outcasts despite being conservatives and the likes of jim jordan who we eluded to at the top of the broadcast, they are the ones that speak for today's gop. joining us now a conservative lawyer, george conway. clearly this was vice president pence's strongest rebuke of the former president. i wish we played the applause at the federalist society, because it wasn't like there was a rousing standing ovation and he was carried out on the shoulders of the members of the federalist society after that. >> i'm not able to judge the amount of applause on the video. the conservative lawyers for the most part agree with pence and were appalled what happened january 6th and have no qualms about saying that. that is what happened with, you know, bill barr. bill barr went in. you know, to his credit you can criticize him for other things, but he told the president that no, you can't seize the ballot boxes or voting machines and he told the president to his face in the oval office, president trump that you lost the election and there is no base to claim fraud and he got screamed at it for it and all of the lawyersa the justice department that threatened to resign. that is why trump had a lousy set of lawyers in the end. the real lawyers and law firms wouldn't help him. you know, i think it makes absolute sense for pence to have picked this audience to make this statement at this time. >> well, the context of this is also important. we have seen pence aides testifying one by one cooperating to the january 6th committee. we found out they are going to receive records from the national archives. how do you think the former president will react to pence's comments. what does it do to pence's standing for his own presidential ambitions? >> well, i think we already know that. we already saw that. i think what really triggered the speech this week was the former president's statement that he issued over the weekend where he basically said that the person that should be investigated is mike pence for not overturning the election. he is urging an investigation of mike pence, which is completely insane. i think, you know, there is no upside for mike pence in donald trump anymore if trump is going to be saying that. it is just better for mike pence in the eyes of history to take ownership of that in a more emphatic way, which is what he did today to his great credit. >> does it make any sense that the rnc put out the official resolution equating a violent attack on the capitol with, you know, i want to get the wording exactly right, with legitimate -- i forgot the wording. legitimate political discourse. >> right. if they wanted to make clear between political discourse and the violence at the capitol they could have been more specific but they didn't. they are lumping everybody together, including the insurrectionists. trump is talking about pardoning these people and he is not making a distinction between the people charged with seditious conspiracy and those that watched the rally and went home. i think the criticism from the republican national committee is that somehow the january 6 committee exceeded their mdate and have gone beyond what happened that day. but it hasn't, really. you can't just look at what happened within a two-block radius of capitol hill for two hours on january 6. it did not just happen accidentally. it did not just happen randomly. i don't know who they are talking about when they are talking about legitimate political discourse. the people breaking glass. are they talking about the people that put up the gallows to say hang mike pence. the people that signed fake electoral votesa at the behest of the tru campaign. is it legitimate political discourse for john eastman and jeffrey clark to basically make fake theories overruling the constitution and 12th amendment and electoral count act of 1887. those two guys. is it legitimate political discourse, those two that pled the fifth amendment before the january 6 committee? i don't think so. if somebody was engaged in that they have nothing to fear from the january 6 committee or anything else. >> that mitt romney is now such an outlier in the party, a man that was the nominee for the party is extraordinary. bill cassidy speaking out against the censure of cheney and kinzinger. it is stunning. >> stunning and sad. we have gone from, you know, cowardice to depravity really in the republican party in the rnc. it is horrific. >> george conway, i appreciate you think with us as always. >> thank you, anderson. >> coming up new exclusive cnn reporting establishing what one january 6 figure has been reluctant to pin down. when did congressman jim jordan speak with the former president on january 6th and what to make economically and politically of today's strong job numbers - common percy! - yeah let's go! on a trip. book with priceline. you save more, so you can “woooo” more. - wooo. - wooo. wooooo!!!!! woohooooo!!!! w-o-o-o-o-o... yeah, feel the savings. priceline. . it's our ultimate sleep number event on the sleep number 360 smart bed. it senses your movements and automatically adjusts to relieve pressure points. and it's temperature balancing so you both sleep just right. and now, save 50% on the sleep number 360 limited edition smart bed. plus, 0% interest for 48 months on all smart beds. ends monday . >> we have exclusive new reporting about what the house committee knows about jim jordan's conversation with the former president on the day of the attack. the congressman either can't quite or won't quite say. did you speak with him before during or after the capitol was attacked? >> i spoke with him that day, i think after. i don't know when those conversations happened. obviously confused or hazy. now here he is in october against steve bannon. >> of course i talked to the president. i have been clear about that. i talked to him all of the time. i don't recall the number of times. >> was it before, during or after the attack. >> i talked to the president after the attack. >> so later in the hearing congressman jordan said "i may have talked to him before" i don't know. but i had nothing to do with any of this. still does not clear it up. but there is new reporting. what have you learned, paul? >> jordan's recollection of that day has been inconsistent at best. two sources tell cnn the house select committee has records showing jordan spoke with the former president for ten minutes on the morning of january 6. now remember that afternoon jordan took to the house floor to object to the certification of biden's electoral college win less than an hour before pro-trump supporters attacked the u.s. capitol. these records were given to the committee after trump lost the bid at the supreme court to keep them out of the committee's hands and reveal a request to get jordan on the phone at the white house residence followed by this ten minute call. jordan was asked about it today and he said he had multiple calls with trump on january 6 but could only confirm he spoke with trump after he left the house floor and did not remember whether they spoke that morning. a lawyer for trump and the spokesman did not respond to the request for comment. >> do we know what time the ten minute call was? >> not at this point. we know it was in the morning and trump left the white house around 11:00a.m. i don't think we know the time of the call. >> could be the fall out here? >> well, jordan has refused a request to voluntarily cooperate with the house committee's investigation and in the letter requesting his cooperation the committee said they wanted to ask him about meetings he had with white house officials and trump in the weeks leading up to the attack. the committee is waiting to decide if they want to issue a subpoena for their colleague. the house rules committee chairman tweeted this cnn reporting directly contradicts jordan's testimony to the rules committee last year and tweeted suggesting it might be time for jordan to speak honestly about what happened. >> yeah. appreciate it. thank you. i spoke to chairman mcgovern just before air time. congressman, thanks so much for joining us. when jim jordan was asked a similar question in the same hearing by a republican congressman he said i may have talked to him before. i don't know. him in this case being the former president. do you think congressman jordan did not remember a ten minute call with the sitting president of the united states? >> how can you not remember a call with the president of the united states? i asked him specifically and he said after. he was very, very explicit. it does not seem possible to me that anybody can't recall talking to the president of the united states. you know, clearly there is a contradiction between what he said to me and what we now know as a result of the january 6 committee. i think he owes it to the country to go before the january 6 committee and answer questions. >> it is not just any day. in the past jim jordan said i speak to the president every day. every day is not january 6. january 6 was an extraordinary day. anybody that spoke to the president on that day i think would remember. >> right. somebody that spoke to the president before the attack came upon the capitol. i would like to know what they talked about. i mean every day we learn more and more about what went on leading up to january 6. everything from the president wanting to use the military to seize voting machines to finding documents he tore up personally that are being put back together. there is no doubt it hads it roots in the west wing. we have members of congress that are covering up for the president or they may be complicit in this. so i think that it is important for him to answer questions before the january 6 commission. i want to know all that he knows. >> you say that you think that it is important that he do it. do you think that he actually will though? i mean there is -- >> look, i think that he owes it to the country. i think he owes it to the country. anderson, i was the last person off of the house floor on january 6. i assumed the chair as speaker pelosi was whisked away. i saw these rioters trying to get at us by smashing the window in the speaker's gallery. people died. police officers were wounded. staffers were traumatized that day. for a member of congress to turn a blind eye to that and to try to cover up or pledge his allegiance to the former president. he owes the american people the truth. we need to get at the truth. >> the list of behavior is a long one. do you think there is a clear-cut answer. >> well, i am not an expert on all of that. you know, i leave that one to the attorneys. one of the reasons that i feel so strongly that republicans not take control of the house and the senate in the midterms. it is tantamount to turning the keys over to the insurrectionists. jim jordan is the ranking republican on the judiciary committee. he would be the chairman of the judiciary committee. let that sink in. he owes it to his colleagues and all of those that suffered on that day and to the american people to tell us what the conversation was about and anything else that he knows that is important to the committee understanding what happened that day. >> congressman jim mcgovern, thank you for your time. >> all the best. >> coming up tonight, the surprising jobs number president biden is clearly thankful for a conversation from the wise and if the biden administration can capitalize on it heading into midterms. and proactive alerts on market events. that's decision tech. only from fidelity. >> president biden spending this evening at his delaware home. he left the white house at the end of a far more encouraging week at the white house than he has had in a while. the president celebrating monumental economic news at home, the economy adding 467,000 jobs last month. revised numbers show employers added 6.6 million in biden's first year in office. >> history has been made here. it comes along side the largest drop in unemployment rate in a single year on record. the largest reduction in childhood poverty ever recorded in a single year and the strongest economic growth the country has seen in 40 years. >> the president noted the economic clouds from inflation and his approval ratings remain underwater. was the white house expecting the report to be as positive as it was? >> not even close. they were pretty relieved today when it came out, anderson. they have been preparing reporters saying they did not believe it would be a good jobs report. look when the data was collected. you were seeing millions of people staying out of work. they were worried it would be another one of the bleak job reports. it has been really unpredictable and economists have been way off in their predictions. you definitely sensed the sense of relief from officials today talking about the numbers. >> clearly the president wanted to sell the success of the numbers to the american people. how does the white house plan to make the most of this? >> i think this is a jobs report the president can talk about the numbers and what they show and talking about the american rescue plan, the infrastructure plan passed in the fall and the effects you will see from that and proof my plan on the economy is working. anderson, what they have to do with that is to talk about the domestic legislation stalled on capitol hill, the build back better plan which senator manchin said he would not vote for in december. the president also acknowledged the inflation numbers. gas is higher than people expect them to be. groceries are higher than people expect them to be. they are working to address that. the question of how quickly those numbers come down and what is in his capacity to do will affect the way he sells the numbers that came out in this report today. >> stay with us. john king, could a strong labor market be a sign of hope for this white house in the midterms? >> well, it is a sign of hope, anderson. if you are the president, his team or a democrat, february 4th looks a hell of a lot better than january 4. you have the new job numbers and the revisions. there is a bit of momentum. is one job report going to fix the president? absolutely not. he needs another one and another and another one. we have been on this roller coaster, everybody whether you are a democrat, republican, independent. you are exhausted. you are anxious and frustrated from covid and the economic domino effect of covid. he needs the covid numbers to keep coming down as well. where are we easter sunday, memorial day. are the jobs numbers continuing to be great and covid numbers down. the president could get a reassessment from the american people. the there is a kick in the teeth from inflation. >> we heard from t obama administration they feel there was not enough done to highlight the progress they made before the 2010 midterms. >> you heard the president saying talking about the job numbers yosaw overall, if you can't remember the last time you saw that, you have never seen it. it never happened before. it is record-shattering. we saw record-shattering job losses because of the pandemic. i think the white house is trying to hammer home the message of something positive, positive, positive. there is also inflation. you can't tell people how to feel. i think one other thing they will true i to highlight in the coming months, look at the revisions we got from the labor department saying actually in november and december, there were 700,000 more jobs than we estimated initially. and i think that is something the white house looks at. the job reports come out. you see the numbers and they are bad or way off and they are revised upwards later on. that is after it is already in the minds of people here is what the jobs report looks like. here is what the economy looks like. >> everybody knows s james carville. i want to show a comparison here in the last two administrations, a little over a year in former president obama had a sky-high unemployment rating but higher approval rating than biden in their first terms. president trump, low unemp unemployment. >> it is not how most voters think. how do voters feel? i remember the 1992 campaign when james carville was using that campaign. the bush campaign was furious. all of the numbers supported them. president bush cited the statistics. people didn't want to be lectured by a politician. it is how do people feel. watch the president's approval rating, consumer sentiment, the right track, wrong track number. those numbers have to change. history is against them in a midterm. the math is against them. they need to change the psychology of the american people and if you lecture them, that is risky. the president needs months of them. he needs people to exhale and feel better and not be as mad. i don't need a pinata. everybody wants to hit something because they are so frustrated from two years of covid. even if the economy is perfect for democrats and covid gets better, history is against them. he needs help from republicans. what is going on with the lighting behind you? are you at a disco? >> a lot of people are tweeting, asking about this. it is because of the olympics. the white house is lit up tonight. it is for the olympics. go team usa. also it is a disco. they have to make some money. >> i see, okay. thank you. all right. john king as well. thanks. outrage is growing after minneapolis officials released body cam footage showing a deadly police shooting of a black man in a no-knock raid. details ahead. my daughter has type 2 three shots. >> the officer had to make a split second decision to assess the circumstances and determine if he felt there was a threat and that the threat was of imminent harm. >> reporter: locke's
