Is through the Summer Enterprise driven or consumer driven . What are your thought sms well, i dont know. Carl, i have no idea what the stokck market doing and why it does it. But in this case the tech did better in sectors even after issues with wall street of the earnings of a number of the tech giants. They beat up on them too much after the earnings came out, and now now it is a return. Apple is a good example, and it was badly hit because of to last earnings announcements, and people are reconsidering it and another thing is that Warren Buffett bought into apple, and that is always a sign that like people overreacted, and he is a savvy investor and people thought twice about it and apple is a leader in that way, and many of them, they follow. Facebook is doing great. I think they turned in a terrific quarter, and again, it caused the people to look at all of the sectors and not just tech saying they are doing better in relation. And kara, the big picture heading into the code conference, and doesnt it seem like a weird spot in the tech sector where we had the smart phones that have run the course and we have had social, and there is is a clear winner there. And aside from facebook and amazon amazon, it fears that a few people have been rallying a new way to continuing to ride and yeah, that is new. And google is doing well, and we have known the youtube story as well, and whether it is vr and chat box and Artificial Intelligence and a bunch of stuff that may or may not pan out . Yes and the Tech Community has the Attention Span of a gnat. What is that . A short Attention Span. Very funny. And so we are between the product, and these products are enormously successful, and waiting for the next wave of thing, what have you done for me lately . What is the next gadget and it is a tough environment to innovate when you have done astonishing innovation over the last ten years. If you are thinking about it, it is breathtaking in what is invented and pushed out into the market, and you know, we are in another paradigm change and probably, it is moving slower, and there is nothing on the horizon that seems like, wow. And so, you are going to get that kind of the on wave among the investors and Silicon Valley about what is the next big thing for them. There is one big thing that a lot of the companies are doing that investors like and that is paying a big fat dividend which is not something that you will see the high growth, and the hyperexciting companies doing, but you will hear the likes of Warren Buffett buying ibm and adding more there and the other investors, because the dividend yield is rich, and that is more of the defensive play than the big bet of a company and innovation. Innovation. Yeah, i know. Warren buffett buying it has another side, because it is not a growth stock, but a value stock stock. I am not sure that apple wants to be called a value stock, i guess. So it is an interesting time. It is really a question if this engine that has run so hot can continue to. And now, there are exciting thing s to things to be talking about in code next week around cars, and around vr and around sort of the next Generation Communications devices, but it does not mean that they are quite here yet, and it is the cycle that is sort of the maturing, but it is not near the end yet. It is unusual time and it is not to say that there is not enormous success, but it is where is the next success coming from, and the next is big successes, but harder to reach like cars for example. Yeah, yeah. And we have to be patient for sure. And next up, kara, the gawker story, and nick denton on squawk box this morning the talk about the fight against billionaire peter theil. I think that Silicon Valley needs to watch out, and they need to watch out in Silicon Valley, because they have more money and power than god and some of them want to actually be gods. And kara you got embroiled in a discussion on twitter yesterday with nick we dont need to be taught lessons or. Far less ethics and more click chasing in press today. And then khosla said we dont need to be taught lessons. And then it was also if he was so proud of his efforts why skulk around. And so it is a troublesome situation where somebody could do this in secret, and that is the secret part of what is it to get to me. If he is proud of what he is doing, and doing the philanthropy or gods work or whatever, why not say it and say what you are doing, and probably, because it would have opened him up to criticism in the process, and now that he has won, he can take the criticism and say, see what i have done for you shgs, you other potentates, i have knocked down someone unpopular, and gawker is unpopular and no two ways about it. And just because he has the backing, it does not necessarily change the facts of the case, and in the hulk hogan case there was a jury and settlement, and i wonder if you actually think sure. And if the jury knew where the backing came from would any of the facts of the case have changed . I dont know. I dont know, but there are other cases now, kayla, and that he is funding that are a little bit more questioning. If you started to attack cnbc with case after case after case and some of them frivolous, and some may not ever turn out, but they will cost you at lot of money. That is what is happening here, and not necessarily the cases or whether hulk hogans sex tapes should be on the internet and it should be litigate and i get it, but it is not just one but many, and the process of trying to kill off a media company, and if that is okay with you shgs, but it makes me nervous, and certainly makes me nervous that if they dont like us, they can hit with us case after case after case, and that is the thing, and billionaires can do that and we had jim stewart on last hour when he wrote den of thieves michael millken, the millken family came after him through someone else, and turned out that the libel suit got tossed out, but it potentially cost millions and million ss of dollars and the piece for me that people dont seem to be getting is that these are not theoretical cases where if you r are getting sued, you must have done something wrong, they real really could, and peter theil could spark a movement to attack not just gawker but other journalism that have a different value. They that dont like, and frankly, the funny part is that most of Silicon Valley, and i have to cop it to is way too nice to the tech sekctor. And the finance sector, and hollywood get covered much more toughly, and the minute that you do something beyond a press release, and not everybody, because a lot of smart people in Silicon Valley even slight crit criticism they go crazy. When i went after yahoo for the financial problems, i am too mean, and i said well, it is cheat ing cheating the shareholders, and they are losing. So it is just like the question of can you take the criticism when you are some of the most powerful people on earth, and clearly, no shgs, they cannot, and he cannot. And i understand that there is criticism, and i get Dentons Point that a lot of the tech press is deferential, and he made a point this morning of saying that they agree to the embargoes embargoes, but is the response then to go after the personal lives of some of the executives . Well, you know, we dont do it on recode and i dont like ut and it is distasteful, too but it is a question that i cant make the judgments on that stuff, and again, things that are inaccurate should be litigated in court, absolutely. But i feel like everything is done in the cloak and dagger manner with people with endless amounts of money, and it is disturbing, and i find that the seek secretiveness is very strange. I find that to be the strangest part part. Again, if you really believe in this issue, then come out to say, i am going to the go after this company for being consistently wrong. Of course they will make mistake, and of course every journalist is going to be making a mistake, and every business is is is going to make a mistake and the question is how it is done, and i get why they they dont like to be insulted personally and i can tell you that the New York Post wrote and no one does and the New York Post wrote a story when i was pregnant that was appalling an inaccurate about it and can i take it, sure. Am i mad about it . Yes. And could you see gawker being put up by your Parent Company . I have no idea. I have no idea. I wouldnt know, and that would seem unusual to me but again, i dont buy things at box media so i dont know. I will have to read it. And i didnt know about it. And we will talk about the ripple effects of Denton Gawker and theil for a long time. Yes. And kara, two executives are leaving twitter as they disband the commerce team, and the buy button and they saw solid gains burk still down 36 for the year year. And kara, you are going to be talking to jack dorsey at code next week along with a bunch of names. Yes. And gates and bezos and musk, and what specifically do you want to know from jack . Well peter kopta is going to be doing that interview, and we want to talk about black lives matter and the social aspects of twitter, and not just black lives matter but donald trump, and everybody is using twitter in an interesting way which is one topic, and also issues throughout the business and how it continues to sustain itself and be info vative, and you know how he does two job, and stuff like that, but in this case, we are interested in the how the social platforms are being used in the wide range of ways, but there is a million questions to ask any of the people on very similar topics. The election where social immediatemedia is going, and where the next innovation is where we started the conversation with, and so there is tons of stuff to talk about with this, and they are not shy people which is good. Which ones do you personally handle . I will be interviewing Cheryl Sandberg and Sheryl Sandberg and howie tenor, and interviewing the ceo of ford mark fields. I will be interviewing ginni from ibm. And susan from gates foundation. So i will be busy. Yes. Lots of people. And so as jon and i will be heading out there to see everything that happens. We cant wait. Kara, rest up. See you at the pool as usual okay. And kara swisher, big week next week. Thank you for join g using us. Thank you. Get started today at angies list, because your home is where our heart is. Long lines expected on one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. And phil lebeau is joining us from chicago ohare and also known as the circles from hades. Phil lebeau . Well, it is not that bad, and people were saying, oh, memorial day is going to be horrific, but really really, we have been seeing the lines going pretty quickly, and the longest line was 35 minutes and that is early this morning. When you look at how many people are going to be fly ging this weekend and not just flying, but traveling 38 million people, and only 2. 6 million will be flying and i say only 2. 6, but it is the most since 2011. And when we caught up with people this morning waiting a half hour or maybe 35 minutes and for the most part they were accepting of the situation. I expected that the lines would be shorter given the fact that over the last couple of weeks there have been a lot of complaints. My heart is skipping a few beats, but i am okay. And i read sit down to 15 minutes, but it is not the case right now. It is is moving pretty quickly, and so i think that we will be there in decent time and able to make the flight. We did not see the frustration that we did when people were stuck in line for one or two hours and sometimes longer than that here at ohare and then at the major airports around the country and looking at the shares of the airlines, people are saying well, this is great, because you have so many people flying, and isnt this wonderful news for the airlines . Not necessarily, because the passenger revenue per seat per revenue aisle, and while they are flying lower fares mean they are not making as much mo money. Maybe more people are going to be driving looking at those lines. We will see. Phil below at ohare. And what can the tsa do to alleviate the lines . We are joined by kip hawley book of emergent pressures. Can this actually put more pressure on the tsa . No, staffing is a part of it but the biggest piece is what r are the policies of what they are doing at the checkpoint, and there have a limited number of options now for the immediate term, because they are in the rush hour so to speak of the Summer Travel there. Is another time window at thanksgiving where they can make some changes to show up then and then the big changes wont come in until next summer, but it is far beyond staffing. We saw delta earlier in the week unveil its innovation checkpoint, and the hometown airport in atlanta. Is that how this is going to be solved in the future, private investment by the airlines who want to make the experience better for their customers . Well, that is a big part of it. And there are a number of terminal ss around the country at San Francisco and indianapolis, and other places where airports and airlines and tsa have worked together to make the whole checkpoint process work smoother and more comfort plishgs and yes shgs yes, that is part of it. One of the major things that they have to do is to break off the frequent flier lanes, and move them to another part of the are regular checkpoints and have those privately operated which will add 15 capacity, and allow for the regular travelers to use the lanes now, but only a handful of people are now using. Yeah, that is an interesting headline this week from the administrator that about as you said 15 of the people who have precheck privileges dont even know better, and so to separate those two lines . Yes a when you look at the precheck lines, you will see a handful of people going through, it is obvious, you know that if we took that handful of moved them someplace else like, you know, in the rental car center or the different entrance to the secure zone that is going to add another lane of capacity that can be used by people now standing in line. Kip, quickly are we just doing the Airport Security wrong . Is that part of it . Have we reached the limits of the things that we are trying to check for, and can Better Technology actually solve some of the problems . Well, Better Process can solve some of the problems, and the Standard Operating Procedure need s to needs to be revised and officers need to have more flexibility and discretion in what they are. They have and a attitude that says if i see any pointy object that is to alarm the bag, and call for the bag search. Officers are pretty smart, and they can make decisions and resolve alarms without having to do the whole big bag rummage. Those are policy decisions that can be made. Technology will hem, and further inves mttment will help, but the the pieces have to Work Together and balance. And kip, appreciate your insights today, and wish you a seamless long weekend wherever you are spending it. Same to you. Kip hawley, the former tsa administrator. Olay total effects a skin transformation that rivals the leading Department Store moisturizer. Revives skin to fight 7 signs of aging. With olay, you age less, so you can be ageless. Olay. Ageless. Good morning, everybody. Im sue herera and this is is the cnbc news update for this hour hour. President obama visiting hiroshima, and the first sitting president to visit that city since the u. S. Dropped the atomic bomb in 1945. After speaking at a memorial, he met and spoke briefly with two men in the audience who survived the blast. A u. S. Sailor confessing in court to raping an intoxicated japanese woman who had passed out in a hotel in okinawa last march. The seaman will be sentenced in july, and he was stationed at a u. S. Base in okinawa. Eight automakers are recalling 8 million vehicles in the u. S. As part of takata airbag recall. And houbtw about this, 96yearold dr. Harry heimlich performed his maneuver on a woman at a Senior Citizen center. It is the first time that he performed it since he invented it to stop someone from choking. That is my favorite story so far, and that is the cnbc news update. Jon, back the you. And it is the woman who he saved, her favorite story, too. Yes. And pandora is laying out the plans to revamp, and week of the music streaming rivals trying to beat back the competition, and we asked pandora ceo if the hypercome pet hypercompetitiveness makes it difficult to keep the artists, and the investors happy. Take a listen. We can do both, and that is the magic of pandora, because we can build a business that is successful and drive value for musicians. There are a whole host of products on pandora that thousands of musicians are working with, and to the log in and connect with the fans and drive tickets and sales, and fan engagement, and the results from that so far are quite extraordinary. But as the big tech is continuing to make the push in the category the artists are trying to take back control through exclusive deals, and where is this streaming battle headed . Weighing in is the assistant chair in business at the Berkeley College of music, and songwriter and former recording artist john kellogg. It is great to have you back. It is good to be here, jon. And what we have seen thus far, and especially in the spotifys Financial Results with the payments that spotify is making to artists and to labels rising faster than revenues are rising, and what does that tell us about where it is headed . Is recorded music in a streams sense becoming a loss leader where they have to sell all of the other stuff around it . Well, right now at this point, that could be the case, but there is a great opportunity for streaming to expand in the future. That is what the people are looking at it coming to scale. Once it comes to ill ska and it is going once it comes to scale, and it is going to be taking a period of time and maybe five years, but if we can get to the 100 Million Subscriber mark, that is when it will make a difference and you will see the companies concentrating and the particularly the ondemand screening to generate the kind of profit they need to continue the interest from the investors. And john what i dont get here is that if the costs are rising as quickly as the revenue is rising and even as Companies Like spotify grow at what point is there a divergence, and why is that going the happen is that going to happen . Are people go ging to start paying for the streams or the scale will start to accruing to spotifys benefit, and that of the come peter or the, too . Yes. Absolutely. Once it is to scale, you will see the increase in the monthly charges just as what has happened with cable over the years. That is where they will see that there is some benefit, and some greater profit at that point. Looking at pandora, they have invest ed a invested a lot of money, and the revenue is up 29 , and they have investment in new products and higher royalty rates to pay, but they are also making deals with the publisher, and direct deals with publishers instead of paying the compulsory rate, they are paying a higher rate. And the key is for all of the services to develop the relationships with artists, and that what tim russert who is an artist himself is determined to do. And many of your students are young artists, and when you advise them where to put the music starting out better to go to the adsupported platform or the subscription platform and how much flexibility over the course of the career do they get to change that decision . Well, it depends upon the service to affiliate with, and i would say go everywhere if you are a new artist and build your market. The key is to build as many fans and audience as you can, and do it anyway that you can. And finally, john, when you see like a taylor swift push a company like apple or garth brooks talking about the exodus of songwriters out of nashville, how much power in the stratosphere . Well, great, great question. I think that this is the key difference that tim is recognizing, and this is reason why he sis really, pandora has made like a comet pleat 180 in regards to how they treat the artist s artists. They were trying to get out of paying the higher royalties for the past two the three year, and for them to enter into the direct deals with the publishers indicates that they are trying to smooth out the relationship s with the artists, because the artists are in control. And beyonces lemonade album is a perfect example of that and the perfect example of the power of artists in the future. Wow. All right. John kellogg, and certainly, this tier of the artists, beyonce, taylor swift, prince have outsized power, and you expect it to trickle through to others, and it is certainly interesting trend to watch. Have a great memorial day weekend. Thank you, you, too. John kellogg from the Berkeley College of music. And coming up with Six Companies going public yesterday is the ipo market finally seeing a comeback . We will look at the number, and Rick Santelli what are you watching today . H i am watching the clock, because in not too long janet yellen is going to talk. Will she talk about the Monetary Policy or potentially raising the rates . I am not sure, but i will tell you that the medicine according to the central bankers are low rates, but it might not be everybodys medicine. Why . Tune in after the break. All right. Coming up on the Halftime Report is the biggest rise if three months and what that means in the cards. And we will go value hunting of the biggest names in the market, and we will see you in about 20 minutes. Looking forward it to, scott. It is that time with the Santelli Exchange time. Rick santelli at the cme group. Hi jon. Hopefully everybody is glued to the tv all day for all of the shows on cnbc and the news leader in business worldwide and why . Because today, my guest was yra and we were talking off camera about things that we didnt have time to get, pensions, and retirement, and i missed the cue for the first time in 20 years. So low rate medicinal or toxic . Kind of both. So on the day where janet yellen may enlighten us all as to what is ahead in terms of Interest Rate s by the rates by the central bankerers, and the central bank, it is an issue to bring up. So looking at it on the one hand. On the one hand, low rates are supposedly needed the keynesian approach and the low rates are needed to stimulate the economy but maybe too much of a good thing, and maybe, in a onelane too long and maybe they have overstayed the welcome, but now we are to the point where the e konconmys have scale, and not just us or a little it, but it is a lot, and growing, whether it is japan, abenomics and i feel bad for jan nell yellen, and Richard Fisher said on our channel, see has the most monumental and humongous task in the world, and she does. Because on the other hand what sis the statistic that you put out, everyday in 2010, 20,000 boomers will retire for the next ten years, but more to think about than just those number, and think about it this way, pension fund, and how could they possibly in the negative or the low Interest Rate environment generate enough income for people to reare tire . One thing they dont hear when i look at much of the president ial coverage in front of to november election, and entitlement reform, and yes, maybe some but the problem is that, demographics mean that a lot of people are going to be getting hungry for money to retire and the problem is that the pizza is being cut in smaller pieces. It may taste great, but it is not filling enough. And so what happens with the pensions . Do they take undue risk . That makes normalization impossible and createing the debt makes normalization impossible, and be honest here, if they raise the rates and servicing the debt, and globally the costs are going to skyrocket the number one. Now, okay, if you are looking at the people retiring and even if the bumps in the short rates that cumulative compounding effect of aulll of the income lost, but my point is that i dont see how all of the numbers are going the work, and the entitlements are in trouble, and low rates are not helping, so who is going to be i paing for all of paying all of these people with the low rates . I am not blaming the low rates but i am just looking at the card wes are holding. So in the end, this is what i see, the government has to get more involved to help people, because they are not going to be having the type of income streams to have enough to retire whether it is on the institutional side of pensions or their own securities they are holding. And in japan it is worse. So what is going to happen . They have to have money, and where is that coming from . Janet yellen i dont envy you. And important questions to ask by voters. And now, is the ipo market final finally back in business . We will take a closer look when squawk alley comes right back. With Six Companies going public alone is the ipo market finally back in business . Marry Mary Thompson is on the floor. Well, it looks to be improving. Lets see the three that went public. Three of the biggest with us. Foods going public trading higher, and gms, gypsum trading higher apdnd cotiviti up 4. 75 and now norfor the ipos, you can see that reporting to the renaissance expert that mean s that ipos are down 54 from 2015 and we vhave room to make up there if we are close to the 2015 years level. If you are looking at the renaissance ipoe tf you can see that we are starting to see the broader spectrum of Companies Going public. At the beginning of the year, it was only health care companies, but then we started to see the tech and other firms going public, and that is a positive. And now, will the fed rate hike be an ipo killer . We are watching to look ahead to see more Biotech Companies to go public, and more tech companies, too, and that is important because they are the ultimate Growth Companies that investors want, but they have been shying a wai away from the moneylosing companies, and so they may have to reposition themselves as companies that are near profitability, and among the ones to watch is twillio, and that is on the disrupter list and nutanix and acushnet who makes golf balls. And so these are expected to come public, and now, 102 companies according to renaissance which could raise 126 billion. Back to you. Thank you, very much, mary. And now we want to go to post 9, and s p is telling us that the majority of the deals are trading above the offer, and the limited gain of 20 . But it is above the win toe . Yes, as mary said it is Certain Industries and company, and one of the dominant themes is that companies owned by the private equity and former leverage buyouts need to exit, and that is us. Foods, and that is a measured company that has easy comps out there in the public market, and you wont get the pop or the big speculative excitement of what is this Company Going to be down the road. And gms, the building product, and strong sector, and a lot of these are coming out in the favored sector, but it does not mean a rush. And the private equities do mean that you have to sell but if the smart money is getting out, who is buying the shares on the other side. Always the concern, and kay l. A. I would say that these are the deals from the tail end of the last cycle, and so if you have not gotten out by now, you might not. And that is the lesson right . A couple of the lesson and and ceasars and those are not coming out, and i think back to Michaels Stores and others where they are mature companies, and cashing out, but it is not something that the market is really flocking to. And also by the way, no inflows into the stock funds, and you dont have on the demand side people saying give me more deal s s. So we had the red light in the ipo market, and this is not a green light, and what kind of yellow light is it . The signals in the market based on how the companies have been received, and are they making other companies more eager to jum pp in based on how they are saying that the water is or still, im not so sure well, it is relatively receptive if you rare in the sector that resonates with the investors right now, and i do think that, you know, the companies kind of gushing the losses in Silicon Valley without a path to profitability, and they dont have to go public if they dont want to, and find a great reception, and a lot of those even buzzy companies that have not done well twitter, gopro and box, and maybe some hesitation.
