The impact of the strong dollar the continued drop in oil, and so lets get you up to date on numbers with the Dow Jones Industrial average now in the green by about 43 points. Nasdaq composite down 12 and s p 500 is fractionally lower less than a tenth percent. Mcdonalds is higher after replacing its ceo, and boeing continues higher after the strong earnings. In the commodities sector, oil is the big story this hour. Crude hitting a six year low, dipping below the 44 per barrel mark, and brent held up better than west texas intermediates high. Thats what they watch this hour. Thank you, sue. Crude in the 40 a barrel and now they are feeling the pinch and pain and smart money smells of major investing opportunity. Kate kellys looking at how and where hedge funds dive into the beaten down sector. Kate . Thank you so much tyler. Oil hit the skids, dozens of hedge fends and privet equity firms jumped in to pick tarnished gems that bounce back when Oil Prices Recover or picking up the bonds issued by companies with goose assets that pay out in full eventually or perhaps provide a chance to own equity at bargain prices through a bankruptcy process. Take a look at players involved. Avenue new capital, the distressed investing specialist began Rising Capital in june. Carlson capital, dallas investor announceing three now funds in december with different strategies, and most recently blackstones gso capital unit the private equity firm but this is the Debt Hedge Fund unit out trying to raise up to a billion dollars for a new Energy Focused Fund to trade Debt Securities part of the calculus this is a once in a lifetime opportunity in a distressed sector, and according to Hedge Fund Manager Jason Mudrick devotes 20 of the 1. 2 billion in assets to energy this year one certainly that we have not seen in a number of years. This is the largest supply of distressed credit that the markets seen since the 2008 and 2009 crisis. Its more interesting in that its industry specific and you can do a deep dive in what drives the cash flow of the businesses long term. Stock picking depends on the world view on how and when the Oil Prices Recover and which are the best managed companies the market undervalues. Bonds are complex. Look for attractive assets. In this case for example, mature oil field appeal to him and oil spots like the gulf of mexico where the bonds trade on cheap. If the companies recover, you get fully fade is the thinking but if chapter 11 is in the future, you get equity and control the company at rock bottom prices. Nosethose guys who play in the distressed bonds make a tremendous amount of money. Absolutely. Thank you. Dom, market flash. Royal dutch shell, stock moves lower on news they are slashing spending by 15 billion in three years because of lower oil prices. Those sharings as a result are down 3. 5 on days trade. Back to you. Thank you very much. Breaking news in the bond market now, seven year note off the board. Rick santelli has the grade. A treasury doubleheader today. We auctioned off 29 billion seven year notes, deal at the auction 1. 59. Look at the high yield and one issue market it was 158. 5. It tailed a bit. A bit to cover less than average, 56. 1 on indirect and 14. 9 on directs, below average. Cminus the grade, down with the supply with regard to initially, lets see how it trades on the secondary market. Tyler, back to you. Rick thank you very much. A number of oil related companies out with related earnings, heavy on energy here in the top of the broadcast. Lets start with Conoco Philips earning 60 cents a share. That was a penny above estimates. The company cutting its cap x spending this year by 2 billion because of lower oil prices. The stock down 10 already this year. Oil and nat gas occidental Beat Estimates up slightly amid falling prices but still expects to pump more this year. That stock down 6 so far in 20 16, and phillips 66 tops expectations. The reminer benefitting from the flood of cheap oil. U. S. Refiners have been sucking up as much as the inexpensive crude as they can and turning it into gasoline, diesel and other fuels. There you see phillips up a little bit today. Sue . Ty we have earnings from two american icons, ford and harley davidson. Both companies posting mixed results. Strong dollar with a bite out of the krultresults, and phil lebeau is looking into this. Phil . . Ford had a case of beating the street in terms of the bottom line beating the street by 3 cents earning 26 cents a share. Overall, look at the Fourth Quarter and all of 2014 yes, the Fourth Quarter posted better than expected earnings and the revenue coming in at 33. 8 billion, a little bit light on the revenue side because youre looking at sales being impacted by the f150 transition there. It was a fluff ford 2014 any way you look at it for ford. Lower sales in part because of the transition to the new f series. You had europe and south america continuing to be a drag. In fact, the guidance for europe for next year well talk about that in a bit. You had higher commodity costs. All at the time the company transitioning to set itself up for 2015. We said more than a year ago this year was going to be somewhat different than the previous four, and that we were going to see a lot of launch effects from a very aggressive in fact unprecedented introduction cadence of products last year. We delivered that and delivered one more and so we are well positioned going into 2015 for growth. Well have more products that we launch this year. We are set up well for a strong 2015. And when you look at shares of ford, over the last year, remember, they already guided the market lower several months ago, and thats why the stock is basically trading in the 13. 50 to 14. 50 and 14. 75 range. Been like that the last couple months. 2015 is the focus, guidance profit of 8. 5 billion to 9 billion, substantially greater than 2014 greater cash flow and, finally, european woes continue. I mentioned europe was a drag in 2014, sue and tyler, this year they expect a loss greater than the 250 million they previously guided the street to expect. This is a case where they continue to struggle their. They got a plant closing down in 2016. Thats the issue they are facing this year. Thank you, phil, appreciate it very much. Morgan is here following harley davidson, strong growth but at a cost for the company. It did. Fourth quarter earnings beat by a penny, and revenue missed because of the stronger dollar. On the earnings call, the management referred to currency as, quote, a big head wind despite the hedging program. That continues to expect as dollar stength pressures revenue, and with it margins have a 4 to 6 increase in shipments this year. This is why its crucial. The motorcycle manufacturer has expanded beyond core american baby boomer male demographic since the downturn. That means targeting millennials, women, africanamericans here domestically, but new markets overseas pushing aggressively into europe latin america, and asia, especially china and india india, and thats where harleys growth comes from. Shipments abroad are more than onethird of the companys total, and q4 retail sales up 9 internationally. Thats versus being down 1. 6 domestically. New bike models have been successfully geared towards these customers as well. Three out of four motorcycles ridden in india now, harley street bikes. While the companys building market share abroad one reason the stock is up more than 3 today, the dollars under cutting that growth, and harley is not alone. Polaris industries is forecasting a slower 2015. Thats thanks to currency head winds as well. Specific specifically, the dollar makes exports more expensive. Nonetheless look at the share in both companies, both higher in trade today. They are. Appreciate it. To dom for market flash. A tale of two defense contractors, raytheon is lower after posting 2015 sales below forecast as orders fell. The stock is done 6 . A different story here for northrop they gave full year profit forecasts beating wall street estimates up by. 5 . Back to you. Thank you very much. The ruble is crumbling, trading at 69 against the dollar, near the historic lows of december 20 14. Look at rsx, the etf that tracks publicly traded Russian Companies way down this year. Over the past year down 41 percent. Cnbc is getting a major exclusive with russias finance minister live in moscow. Hi, jeff. Reporter hi, tyler. Well, the rubles going to have an interesting start to the week here. The russian finance minister says a number of things that could be pertinent to the way the currency trades. We have a Central Bank Meeting tomorrow. Interest rates at 17 here and they will lift it to defend the russian currency. He has suggested that these rates are too high and no longer appropriate given the decline in volatility. He thinks weve seen around the currency. He added, though at the back end of those comments of course, the central bank is independent. Well wait and watch to see what happens tomorrow. The other area where hes put the cat among the pigeons is on greece suggesting the russians would be open to the greeks approaching them if they wanted finance. Now, that is going to be complicated. We currently have Foreign Ministers in europe sitting down talking about a fresh round of sanctions against the russians and the greek, the new greek left wing government, has expressed, perhaps, its opposition to any further sanctions, so if the russians are now extending an olive branch to the greeks, i wonder how much unity there will be on a new round of sanctions. Lets just listen to what was said to me when i asked the question about whether they would be willing to talk to the greeks. Translator if such petition is submitted to the russian government, we will definitely consider it but well take into account all the factors of our bilateral relationship between russia and greece. Thats all i can say. If it is submitted, we will consider it. Reporter well, so let me send it back to you on this. We now have a figure as to how much damage was done to the russian economy last year. 200 billion, said the finance minister, although, he said most of that was down to oil, only about 40 to 50 billion dollars according to their calculations from the new sanctions. Back to you on that. All right, jeff, great work thank you so much. Fascinating story. Big miss on home sales, how the American Housing markets is loading up in 2015. Containing the Measles Outbreak in america, from the california to the midwest. How to protect your family and yourself. Financial noise financial noise financial noise coach stock rises on Company Earnings beat, but the profits continue to decline. Kate spade declining after jumping 40 . Alibaba, shares plunge more than 10 , they miss analysts estimates, their worst trading day since the 25 billion ipo back in september. Shake shack prices an ipo tonight at a range of 17 to 19 bucks a share. The stock trades friday under the symbol shak. Sue . Ty to the American Housing market right now, and a big miss on home sales. So just how is Housing Holding up so far in 2015 . We are joined live in washington with details on that hi dianna. Reporter hi, sue, the readings are from september, but future indicators. Pending home sales down 3 from a downwardly reviced reading. There are slight gains to buy existing home telling us closed sales two months from now will be weaker. We got the reading on Home Ownership followalling to 63. 9 . Last time it was that low was 1994, over 20 years ago. Its been falling steadily for two years, and this drop was large from 64. 3 in q3. There does not appear to be leveling off at all. On the bright side one of the nations largest builder beat the street on q4 earnings and richard noted increase the buyer traffic in november and december amid low gas prices mortgage rate, and improving jobs. There was a jump in newly built homes. That report out yesterday based on signed contracts. The builders could be off to a good start, but the rest of the market not so much. Tyler . Actually i think sues going to take it but ill do it what the heck market flash. Lets continue what she spoke about. The Home Builders moving higher despite the drop in pending home sales today. Pulte posted better than expected result leading to gains on homemakers like lennar and kb home up on the day despite pending home sales disappointments. Thank you. We are going to washington with breaking news for us. Reporter hi, sue, u. S. Senate just voted for closure on the keystone xl pipeline cutting debate and moving forward on a vote with a final passage later on this afternoon as expected. Now, the president is likely to veto this bill so the question here is going to be whether or not they can get a veto proof majority. That looks up likely as well. Still, the Republican Senate now moving forward on the keystone xl pipeline, part of a long running political feed between democrats and republicans in washington sue. All right, thank you very much. Itll be interesting to see how that unfolds. Coming up meet the other Russell Wilson. He gets paid to take hits for the seahawks quarterback in commercials. His story is straight ahead on power lunch. Also ahead . Massive homes, hockey teams, and antique teddy bears worth millions. A few of the things conmen stole with stolen cash. Thats coming upright here on power lunch. Welcome back this is the cnbc market flash. This morning, changing the definition of broadband with download speeds of 25 megabits per second, up from the previous definition of 4 megabits per second. This could have implications for the approval of Time Warner Cable because under this definition a larger personality of american families, by some reports as much as half are reliant on a single broadband provider. Comcast, the Parent Company of cnbc disputed that. Twitter is in focus as founder and the board member jack dorsey takes to a tweet storm saying quote, theres not a Single Person who has been thinking longer of twitter than him. Shutting down questions about whether costolo will be pushed out of the ceo role. Tyler . Thank you very much. A case that blew away investigators, a half billion Investment Scheme and stolen cash was used to buy teddy wear bears. Andrea day has the story. Reporter lived the high life but all of the cash came from a massive scheme. Paul greenwood and steven walsh were high profile millionaires. They lived the good life. A life so good buying millions worth of antiques and teddy bears was a drop in the bucket. Ive seen a lot, but teddy bears were the first. Majestic one more filled with more luxury than the next. Walsh lived large, and while raking in big bucks, they had a secret they did not want exposed 3 zblp this was a scam. Over 7 billion solicited from investors, and hundreds of millions were lost. Reporter according to court documents, the duo had a securities business worth billions and shows slow steady returns drawing in hundreds of high powered investers. Danya perry, Southern District of new york. Told the Institutional Investors they would be investing the money according to a very conservative low risk strategy. But she says investors had no idea that large amounts of cash were going to a Shell Company, opened by greenwood and walsh called wg trading investors, than company was being used as a personal atm. I just thought that was the crazyist thing seen. We had Something Big when i saw it. Reporter jennifer with the National Futures association, or nfa, a selfregulatory organization for the futures market. It was about 8 00 million in asset, and, again, at the time they were only able to account for a hundred million of that. It was a huge amount of money. Heres how it crumbled. The nfa uncovered funds invested in the Shell Company owned by greenwood and walsh. That company was not registered with the nfa, and most of the 800 million balance had been withdrawn by the two men. They invested in the new York Islanders with inve vesters funds. The men were spending the cash almost as fast as it was coming in. They lived in beautiful houses in very upscale communities, multimillion dollar houses. They had access to ominous amounts of cash and took money when they wanted. It was taken out of the firm. Mr. Walsh took money out for real estate. For personal expenses. Greenwood bought a horse barn once owned by paul newman. Putting millions of dollars in. Thats not all, spent millions on an antique teddy bear collection turning this part of the home into a bears den. I thought the room of teddyies was unusual. They were seized by the authorities and auctioned off. They cooperated with prosecutors pleading guilty to six charges. As for walsh, he wound up pleading guilty to securities fraud hit with 20 years in prison. Both men turned down a request to talk. More than 90 of the initial investments in this case were returned. Thats because the men actually made some good investments. Listen to this according to the fbi, the duo was busted before one state was about to make a hefty 1 billion into wg. Back to you. Wow.
