Mark holy moly. Less than two weeks since the national convention, but instead of harmony, donald j. Trump doing just the opposite these days. Gallup is calling his convention the first in history that made voters less likely to vote for the republican nominee. Are forming new cracks or for me. Forming. On a day when donald trump was trying to turn the page, targeting Hillary Clinton and talking about the economy, as republicans want him to do, the fallout from his comments about the gold star family continues. Today, one of donald trump is the strongest defenders Chris Christie became the latest republican unwilling to defend his partys nominee over the khan matter. The idea of me losing any one of our four children is unthinkable, and so you will not find me being critical of them no matter what they do, even if i may disagree with them. There was one particular statement they might make, but it is just an appropriate for us in this context to be criticizing them, and i will not participate in that. Mark this morning, the press speculating, it finally happened. A capitol hill republican, in this case, then your congressman Richard Hanna announced in an opinion piece that he will vote for Hillary Clinton, not donald trump. That makes him the first gop member of congress to say he would vote for clinton. Then, the white house this morning during a joint news conference, the Prime Minister of singapore, and very nondisinterested figure called the latrobe woefully unprepared to be president and tried to drive a wedge between the candidate and gop officials who endorsed him. President obama the question that they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him . This is daily and weekly, where they are distancing themselves from statements he is making. There has to be a point at which you say this is not somebody i , can support for president of the united states. The fact that that has not happened makes some of these denunciations ring hollow. Mark but wait, theres more. If tensions were not bad enough, this afternoon in an interview published by the Washington Post, donald trump said he is not willing to endorse House Speaker paul ryan or john mccain ahead of their respective primary contests later this month. Trump also had harsh words for for the New Hampshire senator the faces a tough election and is one of the most beloved figures in the gop. Where do todays events leave Donald Trumps relationship with his own party . John in a shambles. You made the point that barack obama is trying to drive a wedge between donald trump and his party. He was doing that. Unnecessary at this point. Donald trump has said repeatedly, he does not care about party unity. The way he behaves, Everything Else that he has been doing, suggested that is what he really believes. He does not think he needs the Republican Party in increasingly, the Republican Party thinks they will be a threat to their political futures in there are a lot of conservatives and republicans that think he is emotionally and mentally unstable and this is a nightmare until november. For him and for them. Mark president obama and the Clinton Campaign are trying to break the back of the republican operation. They are trying to drive a wedge so strong that republicans will believe they are better off abandoning trump. Donald trump, rather than fighting back, he loses Chris Christie today partially. Chris christies Communications Director announcing that she is voting for Hillary Clinton. Four donald trump to say, he is not supporting necessarily ryan, may support his opponent, not necessarily supporting john mccain, trump has proven again and again that he is not like to make nice and turn the other cheek with people that are not nice to him. The New Hampshire congressman has been critical of him for sure, but any of the republican nominee we have seen, any other nominee of any party would be desperate to say that senate seat. John he does not give a damn about the party or these people. A lot of them have a deep concerns about that. They do not want people to think he is a republican. They do not. They prayed he would behave more like a republican. That somehow he would make it to the and none of it has happened and like i say, he is endangering their political futures and acting like a lunatic most of the time. Today, he lied about the guy who gave him a copy of his purple heart. He said the thing about how he wishes for a purple heart. In the wake of stories in the New York Times today that have raised questions opened by the kahn controversy over whether he is a draft dodger. He talks about how he wishes he has a purple heart, takes a guys purple heart, but it is a copy. In a normal candidacy, this would be a huge scandal but this is another place for he is lying. Mark what is that camera number right there . Reince priebus, meet me at camera one. You think you have had a hard time dealing with donald trump and other people in the party, just you wait until they read the story in the Washington Post. Failing to endorse paul ryan. John i know. I know. Mark donald trump used the same language that ryan used. What is previous going to say . John the nominee is trying to blow the party up. There is no other way to explain what is happening. Mark amazing. Out of control. John moving on to another controversy, there is another coming out of Donald Trumps one mouth that the campaign is trying to deal with today, asked todays what his reaction would be if his daughter was sexually harassed in the workplace and if she were treated in the way that the former head of fox, roger ailes, is accused of treating women. Donald trump said this, i would like to think she would find another career or find another company, if that was the case. At best, it was trivializing. Another one of his children , eric tried to walk back or , clarify his fathers comment during an interview on cbs this morning. Ivanka is a strong, powerful woman. She would not allow herself to be objective to it. She would take it up with Human Resources and i think she definitely would as a strong person. At the same time, she would not allow herself to be subjected to that. That was the point he was making. I think he did so well written. John in the context of all else that is happening, is this particular problem a small problem, mediumsized problem, or another gargantuan problem for donald trump . Mark medium today, but it can grow. One of the things little discussed is you see these broad messages in campaign ads and surrogate activity, but eventually and probably already underway, the clinton camp will micro target. You can bet women will be getting those comments and will become i think it is to say Donald Trumps ability to win , female votes will not be enhanced by this interview. John College Educated white men and women have dominated for 50 years for the republicans. Hillary clinton according to our polling is ahead with that demographic now. Suburban, collegeeducated, white women hearing that message driven deeply in the way you are targeting that is a problem he , has to solve if he is going to win. Mark eric trump talked about we saw that there. Evocative not, as far as i know. It will be interesting to think what she says about her father. John Amanda Carpenter tweeted strong women may flee Sexual Harassment, may also fight, and and then eric trump retreated that tweet and broke am i think this is well said, Amanda Carpenter. He tried to clean up his death is the mess and made the mess is own it is now trying to clean up his cleanup effort. Everything is going well for the trump campaign. Mark eric trump is not the only person trying to reframe controversial statements made by donald trump. In fact, his family and surrogates have become increasingly important players in the election, requiring a lot of translating of what the candidate meant to say. Your rescue here are a few examples. Every time i go on a tv show it is to correct the record or explain something a journalist or the democrats have taken out of context. I was at the dnc. I saw the speech. Lets start with this. I myself have utmost respect for han, for his parents, fotheir sacrifice. Mark would it have been better if he had emphasized that in his initial comments . He was attacked. It was not like this was a bipartisan speech. Would her father be willing to apologize and move on . That is a great question for him. I think he has by calling them a hero. In terms of your question, whether he has made sacrifices, i think my father has. That is not the ultimate sacrifice, a soldier dying to protect this nation. He did not start the fight. This is typical media when donald trump responds to somebody, they say he is attacking. He is not. Donald trump and i have both han is an captain k american hero, and we honor his service and sacrifice and honor his family. Mark how effective is that surrogate operation in helping donald trump to color within the lines . John theres a phrase you cant put lipstick on a pig. What that means, you cannot spin the unspinable john you cannot put the lipstick back in the two once it is on the page. Most of his surrogates, its hard for them, even if they have material that you can spin, it would be hard to correct for donald trump because he leaves such a large impression because of who he is. Mark on the ground locally, urc more success from mike pence and others than the National Framing would suggest. Coming out of the convention mike pence had some momentum and , the donald trump children had thentum, and i think one of causes is that they cannot do anything but play defense. The brand of the trump children and mike pence is dissipated because all theyre doing is trying to clean up. John a surrogate operation in an ideal world exists to try to amplify and push forward the messages you want to push forward. It should not be a defensive brigade at all times, and that is the position they have been put in. They are not making any positive arguments right now. Mark they are all trying to go after Hillary Clinton. Eric trump tried to turn it to go after Hillary Clinton. There is plenty to go after, but the problem is, the filter, this is not a case of liberal bias. The filter can only handle a few stories at a time, it donald trump is creating the biggest stories through his errors. John those are just attempts to change the subject. In the end, the subject is the subject. When we come back, donald trump ips into the rigged system. And later, the Washington Post about that incredible interview we just referenced with donald trump. We will be right back with all that. John both of the Vice President ial candidates have hit the campaign trail hard since their party was the conventions holding highprofile events. , after tim kaines bus tour, a rally in richmond yesterday before heading to florida today. On the republican side mike , pence campaigned in arizona this afternoon, but spent yesterday in nevada, where he got some decent local news coverage. Here is a sampling of what that sounded like. And made two stops in northern nevada yesterday and also a town hall event inside the carson nugget earlier in the day. He laid out his qualifications to be Vice President. A question from a military mom, her question sparking boos from the audience. The indiana governor addressed the controversy surrounding captain khan. Supporters say they appreciated the governors time and attention he gave to the u. S. Military. Many people at that speech told us they hope that mike pence is able to smooth Donald Trumps rough edges. John how are they doing . Mark they are laboring under some obscurity which parties always do after the conventions. Mike pence has to do a lot of cleanup. I think they are proving to be what the people who picked them that they would be, which is total throws handling themselves without a lot of structure which is very professional serviceable, and driving message , in local markets. John i agree with that. I think they are both doing quite well. They are both relatively bland. Watching mike pence go through this, i think, what is that men thinking as he is dealing with the situation with donald trump. He is seeing the right things about the captain controversy, but in the end, you can only do so much. He is in arizona meeting with john mccain today. That will be an interesting meeting. I suspect he supports john mccain. By now, you have probably heard that donald j. Trump billionaire has started repurchasing his rigged system mantra. He mentioned the phrase only in passing today in his rally in virginia, but yesterday afternoon in ohio trump made the , alarming statement that he was afraid that the election will be rigged in november. Donald trump talked about a rigged system to good effect for the nomination fight. Going to be effective in the general election . John in the realm of the unprecedented, the idea that somehow the American Election will be a fraudulent affair. Mark john kerry worried about that. John i am not saying they havent worried about, but they have not accused it. You worry about Voting Machines voter suppression, but you dont , say i think this system is rigged by some higher forces. Mark donald trump does not have a traditional turnout operation. Imf seeing it is a good idea, in fact, i think it is about idea for the country, but if he can scare people to the polls, emotionally get them to go, saying we cannot let them read it rig it. We have to win by so much that even clintons rigging will not keep us from winning, maybe he can scare some people to the polls. Again, i think this undermines what everybody running for president should want, which is called in which is confidence in the system. John look, the honest to god truth is we both know what this is. If trump loses in november, there is no way he will be a gracious loser and say the American People have spoken. Mark i do not know why you think that. [laughter] john he is going to want to have an excuse. I think he may say this all the way through to november, especially if it is a close election, so he could say if it was not for this rigged system, i would have won. I just dont imagine that donald trump will be like a normal loser if he loses. Mark youre right. John up next, new polling figures and where Hillary Clintons bounce is coming from. Also, the Washington Post tells us about an amazing interview with donald trump. First, these words from our sponsors. Mark the polls have been coming in fast and furious, most telling the same story, Hillary Clinton is getting a solid bounce coming out of the philadelphia convention. Today, a new survey shows clinton leading donald trump 50 to 42 . Yesterday, we also talked about a new cnn poll showing clinton beating trump 52 to 43 . We will take a deeper dive into these numbers with our chief pollster who joins us from des moines. It seems pretty clear that clinton has gotten some edge out of her convention. Lets talk about independents, what has happened pre and postconvention . One of the things you want to convention to do for you is not just solidify the face, which we will talk about in a minute, but also to bring in new people, to convince those who might have been straddling the fence to come on board enjoy the party. We have two cnn polls. One that was conducted before the Democratic Convention and one conducted after, say methodology, so it gives us good confidence that we are looking at real change. The polls that cnn published in july showed donald trump leading by 15 points. The poll published after the Democratic Convention had Hillary Clinton up by seven points, so those independents either were loosely affiliated with donald trump or had not chosen a candidate yet. What they saw at the convention for now appears to have made them decide to join the Hillary Clinton camp. John lets talk about gender. What do you see when it comes down to the breakdown between men and women . One other thing a convention needs to do is shore up your base. Women tend to vote democratic. And then you have the woman card that Hillary Clinton wanted to play up at the convention. She is up 10 points with women, has a strong majority, 57 that say they are supporting Hillary Clinton. In fact, she is also up with men by six points. She did not pull this man over from trump. He stayed steady, interesting enough. It was more of those undecided or perhaps looking at a Different Party who decided they have seen what they needed for now so that Hillary Clinton is their candidate. Mark before and after the convention, clinton had that advantage with nonwhite voters, as stomach is due but has that changed at all . It has changed in her favor. She is up 14 points with the nonwhite voter, bringing her to 80 , a stratospheric number, which must mean that Donald Trumps number is really lagging. He now gets 12 of the nonwhite vote, down several Percentage Points for him. That is the part of the electric that is the fastestgrowing. It is the one that will everyones republicans talk about after 2012 where they needed to focus. Donald trump is moving in the wrong direction with that group. Mark in the history of bounces, how often are they enduring and how often do they settle back down . It is so different from convention to convention, candidate to candidate, so i have been spending a lot of time thinking about newtons laws of physics. One is for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, so you would expect the elasticity will bring it back into some place where it is settled, its homeostasis point, but i think what you have to take a look at, i know im getting a physics lecture now, i think what is happening with the campaigns next. You have august, where it tends to not be an active Campaign Month and then things rev up after labor day. You have to think the Clinton Campaign with the resources that it has may think it can win this thing in august given that they have the resources, given that donald trump is having daily difficulties. I am especially curious what the campaign tees up in august. Mark thank you very much. Coming up, more about Donald Trumps extraordinary interview with the Washington Post and his relationship with the Republican Party right after this. John we are joined now by the reporter from the Washington Post with the big trump interview today, phil rucker. Phil, tell us what happened when you got to see donald trump. You had been banned for a while before this interview. I was at his rally earlier today in yeti at the golf course in Northern Virginia and we had lunch and talk for a while about a range of subjects, but the one that is most interesting is that he is not ready to endorse paul ryan. He is the top ranked republican in washington. The election is on tuesday of next week, and donald trump said, i am just not there yet in terms of endorsing ryan and complemented his primary opponent and this is an extraordinary breach of decorum and the circumstances, and i think it shows just how divided the Republican Party is right now. Mark did he come into the interview fixing to say this stuff or were you pressing him on it . Guest i pressed him on it. I asked him about it tweet he made last night where he complimented ryans opponent. I asked him are you endorsing the opponent, or paul ryan, where do you stand . He said he was giving the endorsement of ryan serious consideration but was just not there yet. He repeated that several times in the interview. He is simply not ready. Mark in one or two words, what was his tone talking about ryan, mccain and kelly ayotte. I think he feels he is the republican nominee and is in charge with the party and that these people are not in lockstep behind it. All of them after they criticize him over his treatment of the khan family. John it would seem to me and to anybody who has ever covered a president ial campaign that this would be a campaign in utter melt down. Just complete crisis. What does it feel like to you as you watch the move throughout the day . It does not feel like other moto. I just have a conversation with one of Donald Trumps aids and they were pretty calm. The state of controversy this campaign has been in is now the norm. It is rolling with his wins and rolling with what he says. Was this a calculated move . I think phil pressing him means it was not but in the past two weeks, there have been five different donald trump controversies. There was the melania controversy over her speech, the plagiarism, excuse me. There was donald trump fighting with ted cruz, again linking his father to the assassination of jfk and then donald trump in russia, donald trump fighting with the khans and those less controversies are not going away. What is going on now, donald trump is talking about maybe not endorsing paul ryan. He extinguishes one controversy after the next. It is how he has operated. When you talk to people about why he would do this, they say he does this because he does not want to talk about policy. He is in his comfort zone, which is being himself, not necessarily going in and talking about a fleshed out idea about how he would fix the economy or reform the tax plan or how he would beat isis. Mark did he seem distracted by an concerned with the kh controversy when you spoke with him . He did not. He basically repeated what he has been saying the last you days, that he was viciously attacked on the stage of the Democratic National convention and he has every right to respond in the way that he did. I will say, during the interview, he was watching himself on fox news across the room on the tv and was pretty impressed with the statement he put up responding to obama and how much attention that was getting on fox news. He is rolling with the punches, trying to take this campaign one hour at a time, and i think he gave me a frank answer about paul ryan, which is he is not endorse paul ryan it is somebody to do so and actually says he likes paul ryan but he thinks the country needs strong leaders because we arent dangerous times. He is clearly not on board. John this controversy is clearly not going away and president obamas statement, trying to drive a wedge between donald trump and the Republican Party, does donald trump get that the first republican moving away and voting for Hillary Clinton, does he fear the possibility that the party may come apart at the seams . Guest no, i dont think he does. I think donald trump sees this as his party. Not paul ryans party. Not the republican leadership. Remember back in may when he was in West Virginia and paul ryan was saying he was not ready to endorse donald trump, donald trump shot back he was nobody to endorse paul ryans agenda. I talked to the Campaign Manager and he told me this is not paul ryans party. This is donald trump is a party. He is the leader of the Republican Party, and that is how donald trump has been operating since day one. The fact he has won the primary , he feels is a mandate in what is leading this party forward, not necessarily the leadership in washington. When you talk to the Republican Voters and the ones that decided donald trump was going to be their flag carrier, they did not like what was going on in washington. They did not believe that the people they voted into power were doing a good job. Donald trump does have that on his side. That is the entirety of the Republican Party. He did get a plurality to get the nomination. For donald trump, he will have to expand that out and find independent voters. Do independent voters find it appealing if hes fighting with everybody . That does include the Republican Party. I am not so sure it does. We talked about his comments on mccain and kelly , but tell us what other topics you covered with him. We covered a range of topics and we be publishing more of the interview later into the evening. We talked about the Sexual Harassment issue that he brought up the other day, regarding his daughter, youve all caps. We talked about the debate. It was to negotiate all of these debates, so he laid out what he hopes will happen there. John can you give us a little preview . Thingsll tell you, he the debates should be a headtohead with Hillary Clinton only, that gilles simon the libertarian candidate should not qualify for the debate stage. Mark regardless of whether they get the 50 or not . Exactly. Mark that is big news. John does he want three debates or does he want fewer . He wants to negotiate the debate schedule on the best terms possible for himself. He feels he was able to have an influence negotiating during the primaries, and plans do that here. He does not think you should be up against nfl games of the world series or any other major competing televised event. John you keep the baby out of his of it today. How to go over with the crowd . He was joking. The baby was crying and he stopped midsentence that he loved babies and that he went on in a moment later he said, if get that baby out of here. It was clear he was joking. Mark did the baby leave . No, the baby state. I was there. It was definitely a joke or sometimes those jokes do not translate to television, but that was very clearly just colorful. John donald trump is the only candidate i have ever known of that would even risk making fun of it baby. Up next, we have John Dickerson with abc news, the Washington Post and dan balls when we come back. We have political heavyweights. On one screen, dan balls and here in our studio, the host of face the nation, John Dickerson. He has a new book out called whistle stop, my favorite stories from president ial campaign history. We will get to that, but lets start with the days news. It is, to Say Something happened with donald trump. Today with both president obama coming after him and his statements about paul ryan and john mccain, have you ever seen anything like this in the general election . Guest the president has been trying to drive this wedge between obama and the republicans, i am sorry, drive these wedges in his convention speech. Donald trump is fighting a two front war between his own party and the president. All related to this question of temperament. You could say it is a trap the democrats set for him, but when you talk to the trump campaign, they say the threshold is people will see has the temperament and judgment for the job. Mark you know paul ryan and john mccain pretty well. How do you think it will react with donald trump is the unwillingness to endorse them in the month of the contested primaries . Guest privately, they have to be furious. Publicly, i have no idea how they areoing to do it because they have managed over the course of several months to try to put some distance between themselves and the things that will trumpet seven done without actually refuting him outright. I think he is put in a terrible position and im curious to know how they are going to respond. John they have repudiated him at various times but not to withdraw their endorsement. Isnt the next obvious step that people have to question isnt donald trump daring them to abandon him completely. Guest in some way or another, he seems to do that, but im not sure that is what hes doing. I think he is baiting them and taunting them a little bit but i dont know if thats his ultimate goal. Im not sure that serves in many specific way to win the presidency, but he is a person that you are either with him or he is against you and we have seen another example of that today. John the khan controversy is different maybe qualitatively from other past controversies it is open the door to discussions of trumps military nonservice, the discussion today about when he wore the guys purple heart. How do dangerous do you think this issue is . Guest i think it is dangerous in this sense republicans have been concerned about the volatility and unpredictability of donald trump in the political context. When he picked mike pence, republicans were saying, they kept using the word stabilize. That was, they were worried about the volatility in mike pence is going to stabilize. There is no civility, stability in the controversy in the controversies that this attaches to it, you are all over the map. The number of days to the election are counting down, so line forve to get in the president ial election and their futures. Mark you have had top aides of jeb bush and Chris Christie and now a retired congressman all seeing theyre going to vote for Hillary Clinton, not donald trump. Does that open the floodgates or do you believe everyone is going to stand in place . Guest i dont get opens the floodgates. I think it gives those republicans who were worried about donald trump, it represents their feeling, regular voters. They are not looking at what Sally Bradshaw does, but i think it is representative of a feeling we have seen in the larger electorate with the College Educated white voters. Sally brass us that she was only vote for Hillary Clinton if the race was close. Guest heres the way one could think about this these are people who are part of the political establishment. The political elite, if you will. They have been in High Campaign positions. Donald trump is the path to the presidency, put aside the electoral map question, his path to the presidency is to rally in antiestablishment electorate in this country to make it is big and boisterous as he possibly can, so every time because of post the establishment in the eye as he has been doing, conceivably helps them try to do that. I am not convinced that is the case, but i think he knows what he is trying to do and where his constituency is and his constituency is not that of the party elites with the party regulars. Dan ise is no doubt that right. Electric look at the military part of the establishment . There have been military officers coming for it denouncing him for this controversy. We all know people who are in the military, out of the military, Foreign Policy people who are right now never going to vote for trial. The only question is how public on they going to be or are they going to vote for clinton . Guest i think it gets to this too dangerous to be president problem. That is something that the clinton people were going to talk about regardless, and he is just giving evidence to that argument. When military officials speak or former military, they speak to the weight in they are outside of the political system. That is a charismatic voice in this conversation, not just left or right. Mark dan, let me ask you this, a lot is going wrong with the Donald Trump Campaign right now. Is there anything going on that is not getting sufficient attention that is going well . Guest not that is very visible at this point. There is nothing that we can see that would suggest things are going well. Donald trump is still the captain of the ship and he is. In the direction he wants to go. He had an opportunity given the lousy Growth Numbers that came out on friday to begin to trample on Hillary Clinton posing convention into suppressor bounds. He chose to do just the opposite, which is to help her over the last couple of days and he continues to do that. Now, in this interview he did with phil record this afternoon roiling up his own party to , calls for the controversy. I would say this point, there is not clear there is anything essential going right with this campaign. Mark as we say here on the set, tomorrow is another day. Thank you very much. Holding John Dickerson behind for story time. Both of the election in american history, right after this. John we are back with our old friend, John Dickerson, out with a new book out today called whistle stop. Thank you for sticking around. There are an incredible array of good stories in this work. It is a rollicking, page turning, fun read. What is the most relevant story in the book to understand what is happening in 2016 . Guest you have to go to wallace in 1968, just because he tapped into an anger and disappointment with regular bluecollar workers in the elite. The fancy pants elites make all of these decisions that you pay for, and we are not going to stand for it anymore, and i feel like that is a very similar sentiment. You get the idea that wallace was basically, the voters always said, he speaks his mind. There was the sense that wallace said something other people were not in that just feels like it has the most ethos. Mark you get into one of the most in during mysteries and president ial politics, ed and musky denouncing the union snow on his face or two years in his eyes . Guest tears but not the burbling mess. He gets this flat bed truck, calls reporters and, it is snowing and he has a little bit in this hair and he starts talking about his wife. That is the key. There is the accusation he used a slur at an event. What really gets in this controversial is he is talking about his wife in an editorial that ran on the front page of the union leader. She sacrificed a lot for him to run but one of the accounts has him being like a face full of tears. Watching the video, you know its not a face full of tears but that account took off and that was it in terms of everyone thinking he was in tears. John you write about goldwater and obviously some people hope and some people fear that trump will be the goldwater this time around. Tell us about their he goldwater. Guest goldwater was an Ideological Movement and there was a stop old water move and, you had 19 republican governors trying to stop goldwater and they still cannot do it. I think next and fuzzy line at the end of it is the best because he says, if there is ever a stop x movement, you want to be with x because they will prevail in this fight. But when you hear governor rockefeller speak and get booed, it feels very similar to what happened to ted cruz in this last republican convention. Another parallel. Mark another great story about jfk, and another lyrically gifted politically gifted athlete, trying to win over West Virginia as a catholic. Guest hes furious, saying his win was just a catholic win, he is trying to build up his credentials by winning in the primaries and suddenly it is written off as a religious thing. Because into West Virginia. He runs from the first, and he realizes that is not working, so he starts to run Television Ads that talk about over time and basically grabbed the issue by the throat and just take it on had on and ends up winning and West Virginia, a fight he did not want to have, but when he wins in West Virginia he could say, look, i ran in a statement he didnt like me and i won. It wasnt quite dead but that helped him pretend it was for the convention. John i will ask you about one of the great photo ops ever that went awry. Michael dukakis in the tank. Why was he in that tank . He was in the tank because the Bush Campaign used a systematic effort to tear him down, going point by point by point. He was too weak, a cardcarrying member of the aclu. This was an attempt to build up his bona fides as a National Security candidate. He gave a speech that was thoughtful and have lots of good ideas, but the picture was supposed to match with that. They were going to take the photo off without the helmet on standing in the tank but the problem was that when the tank was moving, he had to read the helmet. Given the photo op with the helmet off, everyone went with the helmet on and it made it look like somebody that was not comfortable in his own skin. There was a big manhood fight in that campaign. As you both remember, the cover of newsweek, the wimp factor with george w bush. Both candidates were trying to prove they were men who could handle the office. John John Dickerson, thank you so much. His new book is called with. Whistle stop. It has pushed into number one on amazon. You can listen to his show on bloomberg radio. You got to do that and while you are at it, you can to this program on the radio radio on 99 11 fm. Be right back. John we have some advice for donald trump for your next inflight meal, lose the fork. You dont need it. Mark head to bloombergpolitics. Com right now and check out the latest on what donald trump has said about americas infrastructure. Coming up next, the era of also feels is over. It is soon going to be in everybodys past, selfish, economic interest to have solar panels and electric vehicles. Purely economic. Forward thinking, coming soon to bloomberg. Rishaad it is wednesday, august the third. This is trending business. I am rishaad salamat. Rishaad we will be visiting tokyo. This is a look at what we are watching.
