We take a look at which campaign pledges President Trump has kept and which he has not, at least so far. Chinas lenovo gives up the crown as the worlds biggest pc maker after some very disappointing results. Welcome to World Business report. Im ben bland. In a minute well also investigate the Environmental Impact of the cruise industry. But first, he came into the white house with a pro business agenda. But events this week have caused the Business Community in america to isolate donald trump. And after over 200 days in office, donald trump has yet to achieve his first legislative change. Analysts have warned that his response to the violence in charlottesville will hurt republicans prospects for progress on domestic policy. So the big question is can the president deliver on his Campaign Promises . He has had mild success. In january, trump formally scrapped tpp a flagship trade deal with 11 asia pacific countries blaming the deal for job losses in the us. He also promised hed withdraw from the paris climate deal. And injune the president fulfilled that promise, saying the deal punished the us and again would cost millions of americanjobs. And nothing has been achieved when it comes to tax reform. Congress is struggling to agree on how to fund lower taxes on individuals and corporations. One of his major Campaign Promises was to rework the trade agreement between the us, canada and mexico. Trump made it clear that he didnt want tweaks, he wanted major changes. With me isjoseph sternberg, wsj europe 0pinion editor. When we look at what the president has achieved so far, has he done well enough on delivering the promises or are we expecting too much . You dont generally see a huge number of deliverable promises because things take time in washington but the big problem for trump is you have much less prospect there ever will be deliverables. Some of the things youve did. Such as the tra ns pacific some of the things youve did. Such as the Trans Pacific partnership, the withdrawal, its not necessarily an achievement anyway, and it also shows he has this ability to say no to things without being to say being able to say what he will say yes to. The deeper we get into this administration, the bigger problem that is. Its not enough to oppose your predecessor eventually, you have your predecessor eventually, you have to set out some think you are going to do. If President Trump happens to be watching this, trying to glean some advice from you, if he we re to glean some advice from you, if he were to ask, what shall i focus on next, what is the most important of the pledges . The next thing he has any chance of doing is tax reform. That is in danger of running into the same problem he ran into when he failed to do anything about healthcare legislation. He has this perverse genius for alienating people in congress he needs to help push forward his agenda and to be kind to a betterjob on tax reform in explaining to the public why he supports it, and making alliances on capitol hill to do it, the tax reform will be as much of a fiasco as his attempted healthcare legislation was. You mention the tax reform and regulatory changers, a lot of the giddy highs, the record highs the wall street markets have been hitting, have been on the expectations of that happening. How much more patient do you think the financial world will be before they start to pull back . Anyone looking at this from a political perspective is seeing a lot of cracks appearing in the wall. It is just this problem of the inability to work in washington. For all the talk during the campaign of draining the swamp, trying to bring in a new way of doing business, how the American Government works, you have basic constraints were you have to assemble a majority to vote for something. His inability to do that, his propensity for picking these twitter fights with Republican Leaders who should naturally be on his side, really becoming very self destructive and tainting his ability to deliver on all of the economic promises he made to people who voted for him. Joseph, really interesting get your thoughts. To get. I dont know what that growth repulsed i dont know what ricos Holiday Plans are that you may be one of the 25 Million People who took a holiday aboard a cruise ship. The cruise industry is a Major Business and its growing rapidly. But as theo leggett reports, the new generation of giant Floating Hotels arent welcome everywhere. They are floating cities. Majestic and luxurious. Sailing serenely through the waters that surround some of the most beautiful places on earth. But when these vessels come close to land or interport not not everyone is pleased to see them. For many people, a cruise is a great way to see the world, at least to find some better weather. But the industry has grown and so have the ships. Some modern cruise liners can carry more than 5,000 people and can cross oceans at 30mph. But critics say this scale and performance comes with a hefty environmental cost and that could be leading the industry in choppy waters. Like other large ships, cruise liners burn heavy marine fuels, tons of it every hour, and they produce emissions such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particulates, which are known to be harmful to human health. The problem with cruise liners is not only are the passengers exposed when on the ship but when the ship is in port, it keeps the auxiliary engines running because it needs to keep the systems powered and that can result in some of the emissions being spread over the city, even when the ship isnt moving, and really we dont know what the effects of exposure over a lifetime of that might be. In some port cities like venice, for example, their effect on air quality is one reason the giant cruise ships are rapidly becoming unwelcome guests. Yet cruise firms say theyre working hard to clean up their act. We are a very small part of that problem, but we are playing our part very actively to make sure that we do the best we possibly can to contribute to air improvement in those ports and cities. Among the improvements on the way are high tech exhaust filtering systems for existing vessels, while some new ships will be powered liquid natural gas, a much cleaner fuel. The industry knows it must take action or there is a risk more and more cities could see the back of these queens of the seas. Asian stock investors joined a global retreat from riskier assets on friday and the dollar wavered on growing doubts about us president Donald Trumps ability to deliver his economic agenda. Japans nikkei slid i on globaljitters and a stronger yen. Dont forget you can get in touch with me and some of the team on twitter im benmbland. The papers with james in a moment.
