The justice secretary, liz truss, will present a bill today aimed at reducing Prison Violence and cutting re offending rates in england and wales. Therell also be new powers to clamp down on drugs injails, and the use of Mobile Phones by inmates. Heres our Home Affairs Correspondent daniel sandford. Some prisons in england and wales have been close to crisis in the last year. Violence and the use of illegal Mobile Phones and drugs have been soaring after deep cuts in the number of prison officers. But in otherjails, like hmp onley in warwickshire, its still possible to prepare inmates for life on the outside. Abdi tahir is coming to the end of a two year sentence and hopes to go straight into a job as a Bike Technician at halfords. He told me his experience ofjail time has been mixed. When i was in pentonville, for example, before i came here, we were locked up 23 hours a day. Im saying we were literally treated like animals. Im saying we had to ask for toilet paper, we had to ask for the basic common decency, know what im saying . So coming here now, it looks like a completely different prison, especially at onley. There are bits of downs but you can work around those. I firmly believe if you give someone a chance to change, they will change. In her first prisons and courts bill, the relatively newjustice Secretary Liz Truss wants to have it written into law that it is her duty to rehabilitate prisoners and notjust to house them. As were seeing fewer people committing a crime for the first time, which is good news, more of the crime in our society is committed by people who have already been in prison. So we really need to deal with this issue, which has been a problem going on for decades. The prisons and courts bill will also bring in new laws allowing Mobile Phone Companies to help the Prison Service to detect and intercept devices being used behind bars. Daniel sandford, bbc news in onley prison. Our Home Affairs Correspondent danny shaw is here. Anything here is this legal requirement on thejustice secretary that prisoners have to be rehabilitated . Yes, that will be in trade in law for the first time. Prisons are just about punishment, they are about reforming and rehabilitating offenders, and there will be beefed up as as though the presence of inspectors and for the prisons ombudsman, and there will be a duty on thejustice secretary to ta ke a duty on thejustice secretary to take into account the recommendations they make, and the justice secretary will be held accountable for making progress on rehabilitation to parliament. Whether that will make any difference in the short run, though, thatis difference in the short run, though, that is questionable, because prisons are places of instability, violence, drug taking and high levels of suicide at the moment as we all know, and getting those prisons more stable is really the absolute priority. There are some other measures in the bill and other measures the government is taking, particularly to clamp down on the use of illicit Mobile Phones in prisons, and to try to stop spice and other legal highs from being used. And also bringing plans to stop alleged victims of Domestic Abuse being cross examined by their alleged abuses in court. This is in Family Courts, and this is the section on court s reform. That is something that appears to be a legal anomaly. Incredible trials, it is not possible for alleged victims to be cross examined by the perpetrator, but it is possible still in Family Courts, and in about one infour still in Family Courts, and in about one in four hearings that happened, according to a survey. So that will stop and in future judges will be able to order that perpetrators Cannot Cross Examine alleged victims, but Cross Examination must be done by a lawyer appointed by the court. We will talk much more about that element of these reforms later on in the programme, if that has happened to you obviously let me know. You dont have to give your name if you dont want to. Send me an e mail. Your experiences are really pertinent to that conversation, obviously the rest of the morning s news now with a meter. Hugh news this morning about wayne rooney and his possible move to china . His agent is flying out there, it might happen . More than 100 people have now come forward to report to the police that they were subjected to Drug Experiments and abuse as children and teenagers at a Psychiatric Hospital in derbyshire during the 1960s and 1970s. Investigations have revealed that dr Kenneth Milner who Ran Aston Hall from 19117 to 1975 was using Sodium Amytal a truth drug used on shell shocked soldiers during ww2. Today we speak to two women who have both waived their right to anonymity and are meeting for the very first time to talk about what they experienced there. Sylvia hurt was 16 when she was sent to the hospital in the early 1960s. Barbara ohare spent eight months there in 1971 when she was 12 years old. They got in touch with each other earlier this month. First lets show you a short animation which explains a little of what happened to people at aston hall. I was taken into a room, there was a mattress on the floor, she told me to lie down on the mattress, which i did, i did notargue with these people. They gave me medicine. I was not exactly right. I heard the trolley move, then i heard the doctor coming in. He carried cushions, he put them on the floor next to the mattress. I dont know how long i was knocked out for, how long i was in that cell for. She was injected with Sodium Amytal, a powerful sedative, on several occasions. When i had come round, the doctor would still be there, he would ask me really ridiculous question, like how old are you . I learned, if i respond, he would put more in. It was the most terrifying. I cannot express how bad it was. It has really upset me. Lets talk to barbara ohare who says she was the subjected to those secret Drug Experiments in 1971 when she was 12 years old. Shes just published a book about her experiences called the hospital. And sylvia hurt who was 16 when she says she had drugs tested on her at aston hall in the early 1960s. Some of the details you might find upsetting and you might not want children to listen. Thank you for coming on the programme. Thank you for having us. What is it like to meet for the first time . You are people who have experienced the same thing . Makes you realise you are not alone and now we have a site where other members of aston hall, ex inmates if you like, will communicate regularly. And it helps them. It helps me, it helps barbara, i presume, doesnt it . Well, itried to run the group to support all the survivors. There are some pretty horrific stories coming forward which i find very, very difficult to deal with, but i try to be strong. I do try to be strong. Sylvia here, i have met her here for the first time today that i already know her story because she has told me. It is quite nice to meet somebody, a few of the survivors. Somebody who understands . I heard ceremony different stories. I cannot say which is the worst one. They are so, so bad. Im going to ask you if you feel you want to tell us ask you if you feel you want to tell us about what happened when you are drugged in that hospital . Firstly, i would like to mention, as i mentioned in the book as well, i was not aware on the first occasion when they took me in that room that i was in there for days. They took me in on the 18th of the first 1971 and they had me locked in the side room until the 21st. These are confirmed by the files which are also printed in my book. My memories of what happened are definitely, i definitely think it was 100 sexual took the time i did not understand anything like that. I was a normal, naive 12 year old kid. An Old Fashioned 12 year old kid. We did not even have Sex Education so anything like that was alien to me. I felt very frightened and very confused. I do believe 1,000,000 without a doubt that it was sexual assault. Sylvia, what about yourself . As a juvenile, assault. Sylvia, what about yourself . As ajuvenile, i was assault. Sylvia, what about yourself . As a juvenile, i was a typical teenager. I was taken before the courts, beyond parental control, and the next thing i knew i was sandwiched between two Police Officers in a police car, going to what i thought was a mansion. When we arrived, a nurse with big keys around her neck and then the trauma started. They took me in a room, checked my nails, checked my head for nits and then they examined me down below. They were so mentally cruel as well. They used to line us up cruel as well. They used to line us up naked fora cruel as well. They used to line us up naked for a bath, two baths in one room and about five different male nurses and females, but they never spoke to you as if you were a person. They were so rude and obnoxious. Because i rebelled against it, i got put on punishment andi against it, i got put on punishment and i was made to scrub concrete steps with a Scrubbing Brush not bigger than a toothbrush for hours. And then when your name was called, you had to go in a room like barbara and he used to put ether on a course, put it on your face and you would he loosen a and b screaming. And then you would be knocked out . It was just horrendous. We didnt know anything else. We were in there, what had we done . They labelled me not much above sub sub normality, not employable, and that label followed me through my life. But i took the system on and i brought three children up successfully, but this should never happen again. I really do feel that in pockets of britain, there are hospitals like that. I dont know if thatis hospitals like that. I dont know if that is the case, we have obviously watchdogs and inspectors and all of that which certainly we did not have in this country in the 1960s and 70s. In this country in the 1960s and 705. I in this country in the 1960s and 70s. I think barbara, one of the reasons why you believe it was sexual abuse when you are drugged, because on one occasion you woke up and your gown, you were made to strip and where this gown, no underwear, your gown was raised, you we re underwear, your gown was raised, you were exposed and there was a guy taking photographs . There was. That is correct. There is this guy, i can still see him, i can see his face so clearly in my head. I have tried to make sense of that. When i came round, the door was open, milner was at my side. He is the guy who ran it . Yes, and there is this guy with an Old Fashioned camera and wearing an Old Fashioned camera and wearing a brown three quarters length coat. He is holding this camera and this flash hurt my eyes so much. I am now phobic, i dont know if that has something to do with it. It wasnt just that occasion. It was when i came out of that Treatment Room and i tried to get out of the bed and the blood was on the sheets. I hate being so blunt. I think it is easier to write it in the book than to say it on the tv. It was very embarrassing. The blood was on the bed and the nurse said that Isjust Stains which did not come out in the wash. I was 12 but i knew very well they were fresh stains but you cannot argue with these people because they will throw you back in and do it again or so you think. Did you get threatened with Electric Shock Treatment . I have had it. Oh, mother of god. I lived in fear of it, i lived in absolute fear of electric. Im still terrified of electric. Im still terrified of electric today. They told you what they did. You played ball because they did. You played ball because the most horrendous. If you didnt, you were punished. Those nurses came from another planet, definitely. I know sylvia, you did tell people, you told adults then but no one believed to . |j tell people, you told adults then but no one believed to . I tried, the consequences of aston, it stripped my belief in humanity. When i came out, i had lost my identity. So the next thing was a Soul Destroying Eating Disorder which, i have had it, but it had escalated to the point of being 30 stone, unable to walk. People widened myjaws together to try to lose weight. So many times i tried to open the door andi many times i tried to open the door and i was just shut up. They didnt wa nt to and i was just shut up. They didnt want to know. Because that label had followed me. They thought i was probably imagining it. And what about you, barbara . Probably imagining it. And what about you, barbara . It is simple. He diagnosed you as a high grade mental defective. That is what he did. That was tojustify him defective. That is what he did. That was to justify him getting you defective. That is what he did. That was tojustify him getting you into that hospital. Lets not forget this, victoria, he came from broadmoor and rampton previous. He wasnt experienced in working with children. He wasnt an experienced psychiatrist at working with children whatsoever. And i have found out through another bbc investigation, it was simon hair actually and ruth evans, they did amazing investigations into it. What they found out was the majority of girls who went to aston hall came from another home called the cat macros cedars in derby. That is where they sent me. I was 12. I have found out i was too young. I was meeting girls who knew tricks i had never heard of. The majority of kids who went in there, it was a Feeding Place for aston hall. Now we have the Black And White of that. You have written a book. You wrote a book ten years ago but it was not picked up on. Now we know more than 100 people have come forward to talk about similar experiences. What would you like now . To know what i would you like now . To know what i would love . If would you like now . To know what i would love . If someone said, what can we do for you, how can we put this right in your head, i want to see the person, i want to know who it was who authorised this. Whoever are up in the government or wherever they are, which put the stamp on asked children. There is a possibility they may not be around any more. But whoever they are. Why did they not do it to their own kids . Ican did they not do it to their own kids . I can think of kids, id do not think any human being who could do things that bad as what they did to us. You have talked about the mental and physical health, what about you . Mental and physical health, what about you . I tried to put it to the back of my head for many years. I did not have a happy marriage. I tried to cope every day. But things happened. I always got flashbacks. We did not have the internet 25 years ago. It was the power of the internet that brought this forward, to be fair. There was nothing i could do. I did go back to the hospital in 1995 but there was no Freedom Of Information Act then so you could not do much about it. One of the nurses will still there and she tried to use her authoritative voice which she used on me as a child. She must have thought i was still brainwashed. She got the shock of her life, believe me. I came back at her like of her life, believe me. I came back at herlike a of her life, believe me. I came back at her like a tonne of bricks. I said, i rememberyou. Im sorry ifi get a bit emotional but i remember a time when they break me down that much, i was standing in front of a blank wall, blocking out everything behind me and staring at this blank wall. Because the blank wall could not hurt me. I literally closed down. I realised i had become one of the zombies who was already there when i first landed. I have tried to emphasise, it is very hard to explain, so therefore i have done my best to put forward in the book because i want to help these girls. And the lads had a terrible time. Victoria, let me tell you something. Girls had to have std tests five days after treatment. So that is after the man was drugging you and sexually abusing you . After the man was drugging you and sexually abusing you . Actually tested for gonorrhoea and syphilis. Lam nota tested for gonorrhoea and syphilis. I am not a medical person but apparently one of those illnesses takes five days to show. They would routinely test for pregnancy tests. In an all female environment . They we re clever in an all female environment . They were clever scientists. It does not ta ke were clever scientists. It does not take much to realise what was going on. Derbyshire police have told us that the Investigation Team have focused on meeting former residents of aston hall hospital as well as identifying and tracing other witnesses who can offer their recollections, including previous staff members. A large part of the enquiry involves reviewing records and the Investigation Team is working closely with archivists in both social care and the nhs to trace, locate and review these. Going forward, seeking specialist experts who can focus on the medical treatment at the time and cross reference this with the accounts provided is a key line of enquiry that the lead investigator is undertaking. People are taking it seriously now and looking into it. Do you believe there are other people to come for it . Yes, definitely. 1947 they started. 1976 he died. Ten children a week, 40 a month, over a 30 year period, working your maths out. Ok, lets say 20 less the country, 20 s lets say 20 less the country, 20 s dead, we are still looking at high figures. Thank you both very much for speaking so openly. Thank you for listening to us, victoria. Still to come. Obviously youre not going to eat a lemon, i get that, that is just because it looks nice and yellow, but tend portions of fruit and veg a day, effectively ten portions. The latest Research Suggests we need to eat this to a cancer, Heart Disease and salon. How realistic is it, and what about fun to get your kids to eat more, because it is hard enough, as you know, to get them to eat five. Earlier the lead author of the research dr dagfinn aune from Imperial College in london spoke to the bbc and explained what he had found. What we did, what we conducted and did combined analysis of 95 already published studies on fruit and vegetable intake and mortality risk. And we found that eating even moderate amount of fruits and vegeta bles moderate amount of fruits and vegetables reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer and all causes of mortality. But we found that higher intakes, as high as 800 grams, or ten servings a day, was associated with the strongest reductions in risk. Thomas on pooter said if you replaced 90 of chocolate and crisps, you would easily do this. Linda says how many can easily do this. Linda says how many ca n afford easily do this. Linda says how many can afford to eat five portions a day, let alone time. Im joined in the studio by the nutritionist ursula arens, and via webcam by prof louis levy whos the head of Nutrition Science at Public Health england. Welcome both of you. First of lets look at the evidence. 95 separate studies were like that. The conclusions made by pulling the daughter of those 95 separate studies, and ten is a good number of portions a day. It is a lot, it is a lot, and as you say, double the current target of five. In fact, only one in four adults at the moment achieved five. So how many would achieve ten is obviously a lot lower. It doesnt mean we shouldnt be told if we want to live longer and reduce by in some cases up to 20 . And reduce by in some cases up to 2096. The study said and reduce by in some cases up to 2096. The study said the benefits dont stop at five, they continue, so more than five is better. But it reaffirms and really supports the basis for the current five, let alone more than that. Professor leavey, how are you taking this . The current advice is to eat at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day, and this Study Confirms that is a good target for the uk population, and also it suggests the increases at the lower inta ke suggests the increases at the lower Intake Levels give you the maximum benefit, so eating above five gives you more benefit, but actually the biggest change is if you are eating less than five, getting to five. So itjust confirms less than five, getting to five. So it just confirms what we have also said that it is at least five portions, and a different variety of fruit and vegetables that is important. And the benefits are, just remind us . A reduction in Heart Disease, and a reduction in some cancers. But there was also some evidence to suggest that if you are eating more fruit and vegetables will also be able to better balance the rest of your diet. Some of the changes this study sees in mortality are likely to be due to changes in salt intake, energy intake, because they have not adjusted for those kinds of things within the study, as farasi kinds of things within the study, as faras i can kinds of things within the study, as far as i can tell. Smithy on pooter says my concern is that people will choose more fruit, which has nash on pooter says my concern is that people will choose more fruit, which has natural sugar. It is a mess and nothing more than the luck of the draw when it comes to your genes. June to have a road that actually these numbers genes have actually these numbers genes have a role. It is basically statistics, it is risks. It is basically saying lower risks or higher risks, and you can lower risks or higher risks, and you ca n always lower risks or higher risks, and you can always point to the one exception, but from data from 2 million supports the fact that your risks are dramatically lower for Heart Disease, slightly lower for some cancers, and that your chance of premature death are lower. But you will always find someone who lives on butter and this to 100. Oh yes, and we have. Totti on Facebook Says i struggle to afford to three portions, let alone five. You can guess where ten comes on that scale. Fruit and veg is not cheap. It is a fair point for fruit and veg is not cheap. It is a fair Pointfora Fruit and veg is not cheap. It is a fair point for a lot of people. Reid fruit and veg are sometimes put to be really expensive, but if you incorporate it into your diet rather than adding it to your diet, doesnt have to be expensive. When we did an analysis of trying to eat a diet consisting of Government Recommendations in the 12 died, than we actually found it was cheaper in the eat well diet. It doesnt have to be expensive. Canned, frozen fruit and vegetables cant just as well as fresh. That is about getting that variety. 285 a day . I probably eat more than five a day. I am vegetarian. And 85 a day. I am also vegetarian, and i probably reach five ish. But i would probably struggle to get ten i would say. But only one in four adults currently its five a day. I wonder what it is the children . Wouldnt know if you are six to five and over about 33 achieve five a day. Adults are about 25, and we know that children are lower, so it is a worry that as being the generations have grown up with different foods and more fast ta keaway with different foods and more fast takeaway foods, they will probably it even harder. Thank you both, thank you for coming on the programme. This Breaking News to do with how many migrants are coming to the uk. Net migration, that is the difference between the number of people coming to live in britain and those leaving has fallen. But it is still well above the governments Target Figure of under 100,000, in the 12 months to September Net migration was around 273,000 people in the Yearending Migration was around 273,000 people in the year ending september 20 16. That is down 49,000 from the previous year, the ons says this is not a statistically significant fall. More reaction to come on that later. Should drivers be automatically banned when they get 12 points or six for new drivers . You may think thats already the case but drivers can in fact appeal to the courts to have their bans overturned. Now the bbc has discovered there are nearly 10,000 drivers on the roads with 12 points or more. One driver has been legally allowed to drive with 62 Penalty Points on their licence. Lets talk now to Danielle Guilfoyle who got six points in the first two years of driving which means you automatically loose your licence, but on appeal she had this overturned and stayed on the roads. Dave nichols in leeds whos from the Road Safety Charity brake, and former magistrate of 18 years Gerard Richardson who saw thousands of car penalty point cases. Daniel, lets start with your story. You were caught speeding as a new driver. You got six points for that. Your licence was revoked but you appealed, white . I passed my driving test injuly appealed, white . I passed my driving test in july 20 appealed, white . I passed my driving test injuly 2015. In october 2015| was driving along the motorway. It was driving along the motorway. It was my second time on the motorway. I drove away for the weekend and this was driving back. Unbeknown to me at the time, i was going 70 mph andi me at the time, i was going 70 mph and i automatically came off of the motorway and went into and a road. For me at that time i was not aware soi for me at that time i was not aware so i continued doing 70 mph because i knew in my head that was the National Speed limit. The next thing i knew i was being pulled over by two Police Officers who flagged me down. They were extremely stern with me when i first got out of the car and interrogated me as to why i was going 70. I explained, have i done something wrong . They said, you are actually in a 50s on. I think my face must have said it all at the time because they completely changed they work. But nevertheless. It was still speeding. How did you argue against it . I got the paperwork through six months after the actual offence. That was in october and in april got some paperwork which was pretty much a Tick Box Exercise which you had to plead guilty on an guilty to. I pleaded guilty and completely held my hands up. You got the option about whether you could go into the court to represent yourself or a decision can be made in your absence. I selected that, not knowing what was to come, to be honest. Speaking to people including the officers who had stopped me back in october, they said that i was most likely facing perhaps three points on my license or a speed awareness course. However, what transpired was when i got the paperwork back from the Magistrates Court i was informed that six points had gone on my license. I also got a £507 fine and i got a letter from the dvla in informing me that my license had been revoked under the new drivers act and i was to surrender my license, not to drive after five days of receiving that letter, and what i then had to do was making provisions to reset my theory test and my practical test. I was completely devastated. I looked into appealing and i decided to appeal the decision, purely on the basis that i had made a genuine mistake. Is that what you argued . That was my only grounds. And the outcome was . I went to crown court. I instructed a solicitor to help me. I was lucky. The judge gave me a seven day disqualification period and he cleared my points. He couldnt do anything about the fine soi couldnt do anything about the fine so i had to pay the £507 fine. He made a comment whereby new drivers, if this happens, and what it is, it is automatic guidelines. The speeding i was going, because it was 70 it was over 10 so i did not qualify for a speed awareness course. Because of the speed i was going it is an automatic six points. Let me bring in dave nichols from the Road Safety Charity brake. Do you think danielle got off . |j the Road Safety Charity brake. Do you think danielle got off . I do and i think it raises a bigger question about the driving test and the Graduated Driving Licence which is something we campaigned for. You highlighted it was the second time on the motorway and then coming off, we feel more needs to be done to educate drivers so they are more prepared when they do get on the roads. I think the figures that have come out today have shown it is not just her case, there are nearly 10,000 drivers who have got 12 points or more. Many of these have a considerable amount. There are some in West Yorkshire with 62 points. That is absolutely ludicrous and it seems to be making a mockery of the points system. It is in place to protect the public from dangerous, repeat offenders. Gerard, you were a magistrate and not at a crown court. What discretion do you have . You have a wide discretion. You have to look at each individual case, to be honest. I understand the points being made about road safety and confidence in the system. Some people have exceptional values. If they argue special reasons and i imagine that is what danielle argued, special reasons can include things like the distance covered, so she has literally pulled off the motorway and been pulled over almost immediately by the police without realising she was on a a road. That will be taken into consideration by the judge himself. It does look a little bit like she has got. I think she has perhaps been a little bit lucky there. But most of these cases of people with more than 12 points, i have to agree with the chap from the road safety awareness, 62 points does sound ludicrous and i am surprised that anyone can drive like that. But it is quite feasible to quickly amass two speeding tickets. If you are the sole breadwinner and your income relies on licence, is it right for a magistrate detect all that away . Lets ask dave. People do argue successfully, please dont ta ke argue successfully, please dont take my license away, because i will lose myjob, i went be able to drive to my grandparents and i am their carer, all sorts of reasons. Exactly. The exceptional hardship is opposed to be that, something which is exceptional hardship on that particular person. We dont believe that 10,000 people have pleaded that correctly. We think that it is unduly lenient and it needs to be looked at again, whether it is a case of the dvla being a bit more robust in terms of flagging up these cases when they come through the system or Even Parliament having a look again at the legislation which is in place. Thank you all, thank you for coming on the programme. Still to come in the next hour of the programme, Dame Helen Mirren. She is addressing young people at the Princes Trust. She has experienced low self esteem. She will tell us about that in the next hour. Around 8000 homes are without power because of storm doris. Severe weather warnings are in place the north wales, Northern England and parts of the midlands. We can talk to our correspondent lorna gordon who is in scotland. Tell us how bad it is. This weather is meant to be short, sharp and it is very, very unpleasant. It started off as rain in the early hours. It is now a full on snow storm. Here in the Scottish Borders they cancelled all School Transport for the day. There are 2500 miles of roads down here. Much of them are rural and the council did not want to take any risks on some of those more minor roads. They are doing a good job of keeping the larger roads, the busier roads open here. We see gritters passing up and down this road every few minutes. However, elsewhere in scotland, it isa however, elsewhere in scotland, it is a different situation. This is a widespread dump of snow and the mhp, which is a very busy road, the major road coming out of glasgow going north, we are told is at a complete standstill the m80. There has been some nasty skidding on that road this morning and it has caused significant tailbacks. The gritters are trying to get out there and they are trying to get out there and they are trying to clear any cars which have skidded but a lot of people are stuck in very difficult conditions on that road. And when a busy motorway in scotland jams up in the central belt area, it tends to have a knock on effect. It is good news for some of the kids who are off today. They are enjoying this snowy weather. Not so great if you are a motorist out in these conditions, particularly those who, we understand it are stuck on the m80 at the moment. How long will it last four, do you know . I am not a forecast but my understanding is this is a relatively short period of time that this weather will last. It may well get worse before it gets better. Obviously, the higher up you are the worst these slowey conditions are. You could get up to 30 centimetres of snow, some of the usual suspects to talk about in scotla nd usual suspects to talk about in scotland in terms of bad weather in winter, the a nine incidents, the Gairloch Snow Gates are closed as well so some of the area where you are expecting bad weather are suffering bad weather but the low lying areas which are experiencing snow and stormy conditions at the moment, my understanding is it is expected to blow through and it will start clearing on later in the day. Cheers, lorna. Ishould have asked carol that question. Since the met office have started calling these storms by name, we, the Great British public have become much more engaged and therefore prepared for when the storm hits. And that is a brilliant thing, victoria. This is the fourth winter storm we have had. We had lorna talking about this know that it has been packing a punch with wind and rain as well. Look at this. The whole system will be going eastwards through the course of the day. We had heavy rain and squally winds. We were getting reports of gusts of wind in birmingham at 40 files 45 five Miles Per Hour. But the strongest winds are still to come. All of this is rain. Up in scotla nd come. All of this is rain. Up in scotland it is snow we have been looking at and we will continue to do so as we go through the day. The central area of low pressure, the Tightest Squeeze of isobars. As the system pushes over to the north sea, all of this will follow on behind it. So the tighter the isobars the stronger the wind . Top of the class that is the situation at the moment. Thank you, victoria, good point, well made. What we have this morning are couple ofamber what we have this morning are couple of Amber Weather Warnings. The first one is for snow. That is issued by the met office. It means be prepared. A lot of us are prepared for this. Where lorna was in the Southern Upland s, 20 to 30 centimetres of snow are quite likely. Across the central lowlands, we are looking at five centimetres. Across the highlands and grampians it has been snowing heavily. Some nasty travelling conditions. The second whether one in from the met office for being prepared is for the wind. The wind was a feature today. The Amber Weather Warning is where you can see the amber on this chart. We are looking at widely gusts of wind, 60 to 70. Out towards the west with exposure we could see round about 90 mph. These are damaging gusts. They can cause a lot of disruption as we have already seen and also at root trees, do structural damage, cause power cuts, that sort of thing. Up root trees. South of that line we are looking gusts of 50 to 60 mph in southern england. As a go through the course of the day, the whole arc d rifts across the course of the day, the whole arc drifts across the north sea. The squeeze comes in across wales, across the midlands, parts of Northern England and also east anglia. The rain continues to follow through behind it as well. It will feel cold if you are exposed to all that but that is academic because by the time get to the evening rush hour, the severe gales will be across parts of yorkshire, lincolnshire and east anglia and we will seize on snow across the pennines, getting into northumberland as well. Through the evening and overnight period, eventually, that storm pulls away onto the near continent, leaving us with a dramatic drop in the wind speed and are largely dry night. It will be cold enough for some frost and there will be the risk of ice especially on an untreated surfaces. Tomorrow starts off on the not a bad note. They are looking at some sunshine. A few showers coming through, much lighter winds but later on in the day another Weather Front will introduce rain and strengthening winds, preceded by hill snow. Hello its thursday, its ten oclock. Thats the lowest level for more than two years according to officialfigures. The number is still well above the governments target of under 100,000. An estimated 596,000 people came to the uk in the 12 months to september. The figure includes 74,000 romanians and bulgarians the highest level ever recorded. Prisons should not only punish criminals but reform them too, under whats being described as the biggest overhaul of the system for a generation. The justice secretary, liz truss, will present a bill later today aimed at reducing Prison Violence and cutting re offending rates in england and wales. Around 8,000 homes are without power across Northern Ireland as a result of storm doris. Parts of the uk have seen winds of up to 94 Miles Per Hour in the last few hours. This is the scene in blackpool there are Severe Weather warnings for some parts of Northern England, east anglia, north wales and the midlands. Flights have been cancelled at Heathrow Airport and commuters have been warned to expect road and rail delays. Its being suggested we should eat up to ten portions of fruit and veg a day if we want to live longer. Research from Imperial College london claims boosting our intake to 800 grams a day could prevent thousands of deaths from Heart Disease and cancer. The report combined data from two million peoples eating habits. The current guidelines say we should try and eat at least five portions but most of us are failing to meet this target. Two women have told this programme how they were subjected to abuse and Drug Experiments at a Psychiatric Hospital in derbyshire. Theyre among more than a hundred people who have given evidence to a Police Investigation into what happened at aston hall during the 1960s and 1970s. Barbara ohare spent eight months there in 1971 when she was 12 years old. She told victoria that she felt so broken she became like a zombie. I remember one time where they had broken me down that much, that i was actually standing in front of a blank wall, blocking out everything behind me and staring at this lack wall, this book will come of this blank wall couldnt hurt me. I literally closed down, and i realised that i had become one of the zombies that was already there when i first landed. David bowie, who died lastjanuary, dominated this years brit awards, scooping best british male and best british album. Other winners included rag n bone man, little mix, and the 1975. They host dent in front of a sell out crowd at wembley tonight, looking to overturn a 1 0 deficit from their poor display in the first leg in belgium last week. We were poor, they were better than us, not a surprise, because we watched many games about them, and we knew the quality. Not supposed as most bizarre performance. What surprised us most was our performance. It is up to us to try to be better and show that we deserved to go to the next round. Last night Leicester City were beaten 2 1 by sevilla in their Champions League last 16 match, that they did score an important away goal. Sevilla are third in the spanish league. They dominated the game, missing a penalty before opening the scoring. They then went to zero up butjust when leicester needed it, jamie vardy pulled one back, which means they will only need a 1 0 win at home in three weeks time to go through. And that would be a huge fight, one to look forward to. An e mail here from a former magistrate. On the news today that 10,000 people are on the roads having had their license revoked, but argued to keep driving. Nigel says i was a magistrate for many yea rs, says i was a magistrate for many yea rs , we says i was a magistrate for many yea rs, we often says i was a magistrate for many years, we often heard the plea that losing a licence would stop someone being able to do the job. We would say to them if it is so important you should have thought of that before committing the offence. This is the result of a gene related points and havent learned from previous warnings. The fact that work means you drive regularly makes it more important to stop you for the protection of others. I feel all those reasons are still valid. When ella murthas mum died unexpectedly in 2013, ella decided to donate her mothers organs in the hope of saving the lives of others. Six months later, she received letters from the family Ofjane Holmes who received her mothers lungs and teresa saunders, who was given a kidney and pancreas. It led to them all meeting and forming such a strong friendship that the three women say they now feel like sisters. And now, ella is hoping she can become an altruistic kidney donorfor teresa. Ella and teresa are here and from our hull studio, jane and her daughter maisie whose card inspired the women to meet up in the first place. Maisie is nine, by the way first it was maisies Christmas Card one year who inspired the women to be up on the first place. Welcome to all of you. Hello, how are you, maisie . Fine, thank you for stop good, forgive the doctor to us. Are you all right, jane . Huw yes, good, thank you for stop let me start with ella. You have to make this decision after your mum died, why did you make the conclusions wanted to donate organs, because she was not on the donor register . Weir when it happened, it came out of the blue. There was not expected. I was totally in shock. She had a Brain Aneurysm that had ruptured she was brain dead. So unfortunately she had left the building. The rest of her was perfect, but her brain had died. And when you are brain dead, you are the perfect candidate for organ donation, so the doctors discussed it, and it just donation, so the doctors discussed it, and itjust seemed like the right thing to do. And why did you decide that you would be ok by being contacted decide that you would be ok by being co nta cted by decide that you would be ok by being contacted by any recipient of your mums contacted by any recipient of your mums organs . Because personally i wanted to know. Do you know, like, ifi wanted to know. Do you know, like, if i have made this decision to offer the gift of life to people, and it is up to them, they dont have to have contact, but for me personally to know that i had made the right decision, ijust hoped, everyday i hoped that i would hear just a piece, evenjust a piece of information, just to know that they we re information, just to know that they were 0k, and my mum had actually helped, and her death wasnt in vain. And teresa, you had a double Lung Transplant, you were a recipient, why did you get in touch with her . I wanted to wait until i had recovered from the operation, and then i always knew i wanted to write and say thank you to my donors family. Of course at that timei donors family. Of course at that time i didnt know who that person was, what family. So, yeah, after five months, i decided to write a letter to the family to say thank you, and how my life was, and what it has been like after. Just to let the family now. And when you received that letter, what did it mean to you . It is hard to explain, because i knew exactly what it was, i had come in and it was this envelope, and it was from blood and transplant, and it had a little signed private and confidential thing. Ijust sat on the stairs, and i was thing. Ijust sat on the stairs, and iwas like, thing. Ijust sat on the stairs, and i was like, oh my god, oh my god. It was this lovely card, all about how your life had changed, you could go on holiday, because you had been on dialysis, hadnt you . Yes, i was on dialysis, hadnt you . Yes, i was on dialysis for two years. She worked all the way through it, portable dialysis. There wasjust all the way through it, portable dialysis. There was just the all the way through it, portable dialysis. There wasjust the most unbelievable feeling really. Let me bring in jane. Unbelievable feeling really. Let me bring injane. It was your card, maisie, jane and maisie, had made the three of the three of the meet up. Tell me what you wrote to ella ina up. Tell me what you wrote to ella in a Christmas Card, maisie, and what you said about card. Thank you for letting your money saved my moneys life. Your mummy save my mummys life. Moneys life. Your mummy save my mummys life. 0h, moneys life. Your mummy save my mummys life. Oh, wow. That must have had such an impact on you. Mummys life. Oh, wow. That must have had such an impact on youm was coming up to christmas, under the christmas without my mum, and for a the christmas without my mum, and fora girl who the christmas without my mum, and for a girl who has never met me, she was eight at the time, to have so much empathy. We have a bond for life. Javid, tell me about how you are now. life. Javid, tell me about how you are now. Jane. I am a double Lung Transplant was it was hard, it was tough, i was really poorly when i we nt tough, i was really poorly when i went for the transplant, but obviously i am still here, it saved my life. From ellas point of view, ijust could not wait to write and think, the same at the time, same as teresa said, you dont know who you are writing to, a husband or a brother, so it has to be quite general. Ijust brother, so it has to be quite general. I just wanted brother, so it has to be quite general. Ijust wanted to let them know that i was a mum of four and it saved my life because of that decision that ella made today for stop sorry, teresa, i said you were the double Lung Transplant, i got that wrong, and it is jane. Actually your kidney is failing and you need another transport, and ella you have been tested, and you would like to been tested, and you would like to be an altruistic kidney donor. Is altruistic the pair had one, is that where i would just give it straight to you . Yeah. The way that i feel, ifi to you . Yeah. The way that i feel, if i could be a match, because teresa has really high antibodies, so teresa has really high antibodies, so she waited a long time for the transplant from my mum, and i am the same blood type as my mum. It was all is in the back of my mind, if i am the same as my mum i could potentially give teresa a kidney. I discussed it with my partner, and we both said if i was teresas only option and i was a perfect match, i would happily give a kidney director watt teresa. The first test came back inconclusive, because they did a virtual crosspatch, and that shows that teresas antibodies are really high, so they would need to do further testing to see just how high those antibodies are. But all likelihood is that you would just reject the kidney. Year. My previous transplant, i waited three years for the right one, doesnt i antibodies being so high. So now they would be even higher. So it is very difficult. My my dad and stepdad have been tested. It is when they donate their kidneys, not directly to me because they are not compatible, but to a stranger, and then i would receive a kidney from a stranger. |j understand. Jane, tell us what it was like when you met up with ella and theresa finally . I met and before. Emotional, very. It was as though i knew her. We were related somehow, it was very strange. There was a hug and flowers and thank you s. We were chatting for ages. We we re s. We were chatting for ages. We were talking about anything and everything. Ella talks about her mum which is lovely from our point of view. Then we all got together and met teresa in nottingham. The same again. It is like a special bond we have got. We know each other inside and out and we talked nearly every day. It is really nice, a really nice relationship we have got. And to feel the same, it feels as if you are related . Definitely. We have shared dna. We have that special bond. But that does not mean you necessarily get on but i can feel the warmth in the studio. Maisie, the warmth in the studio. Maisie, the two biological auntie is, i suppose we can call them, they are hoping you and your mum to get the operation that you need. Tell us about that. I have Cerebral Palsy and if about that. I have Cerebral Palsy and if i have it i might not have it any more. Go on, jane, fill us in a bit more what it is is maisie is a good candidate for an operation and basically it will release the spasticity in her legs. Currently she has the splint on and she has a walker and a wheelchair. We are hoping if we can raise the funds, we are looking at raising £20,000 which isa are looking at raising £20,000 which is a lot of money, we are looking at having, maisie having the operation and it all depends on the Didier Therapy afterwards and how much work maisie puts in about how much she will get back but i am sure she will be up and running before long the physiotherapy. And finally, ella, with the people helped, are you hoping they will get in touch one day . Hoping they will get in touch oneday . I have got a family, a brand new family i never expected to have. How could that not be enough . When my mum died it changed everything. It changed my life. Iam not the same person i used to be. Really . It changed everything. But with the love of my partner and my little boy and my friends and family, that got me through. It has been so lovely having you on, jane you. It has been so lovely having you on,jane and you. It has been so lovely having you on, jane and maisie, thank you, maisie. And ella and teresa. Goodbye, girls see you saturday still to come top micro tips from Dame Helen Mirren on how to feel more confident. She will be live on the programme after 10 30pm. Lets get more on our top story today. The government is announcing a Major Overhaul of the prison and Court Systems in england and wales. As part of that, theyll extend protection for Domestic Abuse victims. As things stand, Domestic Violence victims can be questioned by their abusers in the Family Courts. Ministers say theyll put an end to that so that victims cant be quizzed by their ex partners in Family Courts. We can talk to Clive Coleman and also jane from the charity refuge. Clive, can you explain what happens at the moment . It sounds extraordinary. It does and the most seniorjudge in the country regards this as a dangerous anomaly. In a criminal case, an abuser will not be able to directly cross examine the victim of the abuse. But in the family court at the moment that can happen. One reason why it happens quite a lot is in april 2013, the government really removed a massive chunk of legal aid, Something Like £270 million from family cases. What that has led to is an increase in the number of litigants in person. People who cannot afford to pay for a professional lawyer so they do it themselves. Which people warned would happen. Jane sydenham, and it has happened, and it is troubling. Yes. We are talking about the direct Cross Examination by the abuser of the alleged victim in the family court. At the moment there is provision for thejudge family court. At the moment there is provision for the judge to smell the danger and and do the Cross Examination himself or herself, but that clearly doesnt happen all of the time. There while worrying statistics that Something Like 25 of the victims of Domestic Abuse in the family court are directly cross examined by their alleged abuser. And the reason why that scenario has arrived is because the man and woman are fighting over custody for the children . We are talking back custody, the living arrangements for children and arrangements for children and arrangements about property, how that will be divided up. There is the possibility that the abuser can directly cross examine the person they have abused and that stops as a result of this bill and i think for many people that is very welcome. Jane, welcome. Refuge welcomes this bill. It brings the Family Courts in line with criminal courts after all these years. At the moment, refuge is hearing every day from some of the 5000 victims we support on any single day that they are being repeatedly cross examined by the perpetrators of Domestic Violence. And bearing in mind, what we are talking about here. Domestic violence is all about one person having control over another, being able to humiliate them publicly, being able to belittle them and have control. And as so many women have to represent themselves in proceedings, one woman i can think of, for over 24 months was repeatedly in contact proceedings, cross examined by the perpetrator, using names to demean her and refuge really welcomes this move. It is very positive news. I have talked to victims over the years and they said that experience of being cross examined by the Perpetrator Re Traumatised as them, having to speak about it to the person who carried out the abuse. And when you think about it, this is abuse happening in public. The perpetrator in this scenario has control over the whole legal system. Although as clive says the judge can step in at any point. The judge can but the reason the Justice Minister is introducing this bill is because too often victims of Domestic Violence right now are being cross examined, tortured in public, by the perpetrators who can see that no 1s steps in. The legal aid budget has been cut, so if the perpetrator Cannot Cross Examine, who does it . What is envisaged is the judge will be able to appoint a legal aid lawyer specifically to do the Cross Examination. Lawyer specifically to do the crossexamination. So we are turning back the clock them . To a degree. In this sort of case women are entitled to legal aid if they can prove they area to legal aid if they can prove they are a victim of Domestic Violence. The problem is the bar is set for a high. They have to produce documentation to support their application and many women simply dont get it. If you fall below the barand dont get it. If you fall below the bar and you dont get it. If you fall below the barand you are dont get it. If you fall below the bar and you are in court involved in a case, and youre against the person who has perpetrated the violence, Thejudge Person who has perpetrated the violence, the judge can step person who has perpetrated the violence, thejudge can step in. You having been denied legal aid yourself that giving representation to the perpetrator to carry out the Cross Examination, some might find that a curious state of affairs, but there we are. And is this change the result of direct lobbying from organisations like yourself . Yes, indeed. Refuge also welcomes the Prime Ministers long standing commitment in this area and her announcement at the weekend of a complete overhaul of legislation, so that we can really take a good start look at what is working for victims of Domestic Violence right now and what just of Domestic Violence right now and whatjust isnt working. Refuge looks forward to working with the Justice Minister, the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister who is taking and the Prime Minister who is taking a personal lead in shaping this new legislation. How much of an issue is Domestic Abuse in this country in 2017 . It is endemic. We are overwhelmed with referrals on a daily basis. The demand for our services has massively increased in re Ce Nt Services has massively increased in recent years, while generally resources are cut to deliver them. All of the staff around the country are having to do more for less in re ce nt are having to do more for less in recent years. Does that mean we are not educating enough, the young generation as to why it is unacceptable . Absolutely. Refuge has always called for what we call the three ps macro. We need protection for victims, we need provision for victims, there has to be the specialist worker to advise you and a safe place. And there needs to be prevention. The three ps work hand in hand. Prevention. The three ps work handinhand. System a long wait to go. Thank you, Jane Keeperfrom Refuge and Clive Coleman, our legal a nalyst. Still to come. Helen mirren is live on the programme to tell us about her mission to get teenage girls feeling better about themselves. Good morning, welcome to the programme, it is 10 33am. Shes famously died her hair pink for the baftas, refuses to have her photos touched up and is a fan of nudist beaches all in all, its safe to say that youd never think that 71 year old actress Dame Helen Mirren ever feels a lack of confidence. Theres not a major award in theatre, tv and film that she hasnt won oscar, bafta, golden globe, emmy, tony, olivier, shes got the lot. But this morning, shes been speaking at the Princes Trust about the problems of self esteem that shes faced throughout her incredible career. Its part of a Major Campaign in partnership with loreal paris to promote Self Confidence in girls. Lets talk live to Dame Helen Mirren whos at the Princes Trust centre. Good morning, thank you very much for joining good morning, thank you very much forjoining us this morning. Hello, victoria, thank you for having us. Tell us about your moments of self doubt, your self esteem issues, the examples you have given to young people this morning. Well, i do know whether anyone else is different from me, but its something that come you know, that i have two handle on almost a daily basis. Certainly its more exacerbated i think when youre younger, because you dont know what your place in the world is going to be. You know, youre trying to fit in with everyone, and yet you want to be an individual, and, you know, and a personality all of your own. So its very challenging, i think, when youre young. But i think those moments of self esteem certainly dont go away, as far as im concerned, you know come into your aduu concerned, you know come into your adult hood. Maybe it is one of the reasons i became adult hood. Maybe it is one of the reasons i became an adult hood. Maybe it is one of the reasons i became an actress, i dont know. But certainly its something that i am aware of on a pretty much daily basis, Self Questioning for stop really . That is so interesting. Yes, absolutely. I mean, you know, the only comfort i find is that i think that everybody else is like that as well. Yes. But the great thing that the Princes Trust, and i have been an ambassador for the Princes Trust quite some time, and im quitea Princes Trust quite some time, and im quite a newcomer to loreal paris, but this fantastic putting together of those two rather different entities, if you like, but actually i think it is a marriage made in heaven, i think there is such a new understanding of the concept of beauty, and i think loreal paris, obviously they are in the beauty product business, but they are embracing and Going Forward ina very they are embracing and Going Forward in a very advanced way with an understanding of what real beauty is. And this coming together of loreal paris with the Princes Trust to encourage confidence in people who dont fit the norm, you know. They are not cookie cutter, Perfect Little reproductions of what youre supposed to look like. The whole point of the initiative is to say we are all very, very different, but embrace your difference, go with it and understand the worth of it. When you are doubting yourself, what do you do to get over that . What advice did you give the young people there today . Well, you know, fake it laughter that is always quite a good idea, is to fa ke that is always quite a good idea, is to fake it, and also we were talking about, ijust to fake it, and also we were talking about, i just witnessed to fake it, and also we were talking about, ijust witnessed a little class, which is the kind of initiative that this programme is going to bring about, which is a class of young people who are basically learning how to go on interviews, how to present themselves in the best way possible. And so much of that is to do with just physical language, you know, the way you said, the way you present yourself, physically, it is such a simple thing, and yet it is so such a simple thing, and yet it is so powerful. So, you know, ifind that very important, as well. I was saying to them it was only actually in my mid 30s that i learned how to smile. I couldnt smile before that, i thought i looked stupid when i smiled, and then i learned the power ofa smiled, and then i learned the power of a smile. And finally enough, when you smile, even if you dont feel like smiling, you immediately feel better chuckling your life seems a little bit better when youre smiling. Your life seems a little bit better when youre smiling. Can you give us a specific example, sorry, there is a specific example, sorry, there is a slight delay, but can you give us a slight delay, but can you give us a specific example of when you have doubted yourself, whether it is professionally, privately, whatever . 0h, professionally, privately, whatever . Oh, my goodness, its hard to know where to start. When you are walking out onto a red carpet, for example, we are coming into the oscars now, so we we are coming into the oscars now, so we will be witnessing this, and now official that those very beautifully dressed elegantly in and women beautifully dressed elegantly in and women and you know for sure that they will be full of terror and nervousness. Ive been on a red carpet with people who are literally shaking like this. Literally trembling. If you go up and say hi, you touch them, you fill them trembling. Its an incredibly nerve wracking experience. But, you know, you are there and you have to deal with it, so in a way it is a good test. You cant run away, you have to do it. And certainly i have felt that in that situation. Social media, obviously it is massive for the teenagers you have been talking to. And also it is a big part, it plays a big part in empowering young people. It also puts massive pressure on them, because we see cyber bullying, instagram full of pictures of glorious looking young people. That puts pressure on them. You dont do social media. Why . Well, i do, actually, ive got an Instagram Page i am quite a recent come. I was looking at your website and it said you dont do twittering and it said you dont do twittering and facebook. I dont. This is true. And i still do have a certain resista nce and i still do have a certain resistance to it. But i do enjoy my funky little Instagram Page. But i think the fact that anyones image can be published, if you like, to millions of people. I mean, my god, what an unbelievable pressure that is on young people. On all kinds of levels. Not just how is on young people. On all kinds of levels. Notjust how good looking you are, but also what were you doing in that picture. It is unbelievably pressurised for young people, but in their heart they are the same as we were and are parents generations were and are grandparents generations were. At their heart, at their core, they are exactly the same that we were, and i think that is the great thing about this initiative between loreal paris and the Princes Trust, to find kidss core, the absolute truth of who they are not the sort of the career of who they are. You mention the oscars, this weekend of course, i was watching back your oscars a cce pta nce i was watching back your oscars acceptance speech from your performance in the cream. You were very low Key Performance in the cream. You were very low key and calm, where does that in the queen. Where does that in the queen. Where does that moment rank in your career so far . Pretty high, that was really high, although for some reason for that night i was very relaxed. When you get to that point in the oscars, you get to that point in the oscars, you have been through so many awards ceremonies can you have probably done Something Like ten if not more award ceremonies, and you have either won or lost. But you have to make speeches and go through that process maritimes, you are kind of the end of a very long road and you arejust the end of a very long road and you are just relieved that the whole thing is coming to an end finally. But it is an absolutely great night without question. Do you have an acting ambition as yet unfulfilled . 0h acting ambition as yet unfulfilled . Oh yes, of course i do, absolutely. Tell us. Ijust want oh yes, of course i do, absolutely. Tell us. I just want to be oh yes, of course i do, absolutely. Tell us. Ijust want to be better. It is the thing that roger moore the time, your sense of wanting to be better, wanting to improve yourself, wanting to overcome your worries and your insecurities, which is a part of that. But, yes, ijust want to do it better next time. What sort of roles does a hollywood actress in her prime like yourself get offered . That very kind of you to say im in my prime, im not sure thats absolutely true i mean it. Well, im about to do a ghost story, a film being shot in australia, which is based on the Winchester House out there. It is sort of a ghost story, im very excited about that. There. It is sort of a ghost story, im very excited about that. Do you think there are as many roles for women like you as there are for male actors . No, but it is changing. It is changing radically. I am so excited. One of the reasons im really glad i didnt die young is because so excited about the that are happening in my culture, in my world at the moment in time. So you feel you are seeing equality . The manifestation of those changes. No, of course not, not yet, but it isa no, of course not, not yet, but it is a lot better than it was and i think it will get even better. And the loreal Paris Initiative is very much to do with that, it is a cce pta nce much to do with that, it is acceptance of people of all shapes and sizes, and sexes, and sexuality. There is an amazing sense of no, there is no ideal. There is a universality amongst us all. I think that such a powerful idea for a beauty product line in particular to ta ke beauty product line in particular to take on board, and very much a sign of the future. Can i ask you about the womens march you took part in in new yorkjust the womens march you took part in in new york just after the womens march you took part in in new yorkjust after Donald Trumps inauguration. Tell our audience why you joined it. Well, i think there is a sense that womens rights are potentially under attack in america. At that point in time none of us were quite sure, all we had seen was what was said in the lead up to the election, in the campaign, and what was said in the campaign, and what was said in the campaign was alarming. So i think that it was important for people to come out in america, and indeed all over the world, to say our voices need to be listened to, we have this to say, and this is what we feel about those initiatives, and our voices are important. So i was very happy to be a part of that, and it was a fantastic day. It was so full of fun was a fantastic day. It was so full offun and was a fantastic day. It was so full of fun and wit and good humour and great passion, and a real and political commitment. Yes. Do you think donald trump as president is a threat to women . Potentially, yes, i do. White . It is notjust donald trump as president , it is the Vice President and many of the people in his. I cannot think of the right word administration. Administration, thank you intentionally what do you think might happen to womens rights . Potentially. I think they might be eroded. We have come a long way since i was in my teens, and for a while we could sit saying this will never change, oh, great we have done it, we have won the battle, but that battle is never completely won. I think we all have to be vigilant in maintaining the advantages and the advances that have happened and pushing further. The quality of pay is very, very important. Sorry to interrupt you, i was going to say i have very many interrupt you, i was going to say i have very many messages interrupt you, i was going to say i have very many messages from our audience and i think we have to let you go now but i willjust read on. This is from pamela on twitter, what a fantastic inspiration you are, dame helen, to young people in particular. Very well done. That is very kind, thank you. That makes me feel good thank you for coming on our programme today, we really appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Thank you, bye bye. Dame helen mirren. The number of people coming to live in the uk has fallen to its lowest level in two years, according to newly released figures from the office for national statistics. They are the first set of immigration figures that cover the post brexit period and show that in the year to september 2016, 49,000 fewer people made the move over than the year before. At the same time figures show a Record Number of eu nationals were granted eu citizenship last year. British citizenship. Danny shaw joins us. So Net Migration is falling but it is still under the government target. Net migration is the difference between the number of people coming to live in britain for 12 months and people emigrating from the uk. The government has a Target Figure of under 100,000 and they have been well away from that target. But the good news for them is they are inching a bit closer to hitting it. The figures in the 12 months ending last september were 273,000 Net Migration, the difference between people coming in and people leaving. That is down 49,000 on the previous year. Statisticians say it is not significant because there is a big marginfor significant because there is a big margin for error. These figures are for samples from people, passenger surveys and there is a margin for error. That is worth airing in mind. I know you will already not know the a nswer to i know you will already not know the answer to this question, whether it is more people leaving or is it more people coming . The estimates suggest there has been an increase in people emigrating, but there has also been a decrease in immigration. However, within or that there has been a Record Number of people coming from romania and bulgaria to live in the uk. The figures were Something Like 71,000. It is Something Like 71,000 people from romania. I should put my glasses on, it might make it easier we know that has been a lot of worry amongst people from the eu living in britain about what will happen after brexit, after britain leads the european union. These figures suggest there has been a rush to apply for uk citizenship to shore up their rights to stay in the uk. A near Record Number of people have been granted citizenship. 16,700 people from the eu were given citizenship in britain last year. That is the second highest figure since the data was first compiled in 1990. Within that category, we are seeing Record Numbers of people from the older eu states, france, germany, italy, spain and greece have been granted citizenship. 6500. And also looking quickly at the data for the number of people applying for the number of people applying for citizenship, in the last six months of 2016 there also appears to be historically high levels of applications. That is interesting. Thank you. Lets talk now to andrzej kubisiak, a recruitment officer based in the polish city of warsaw who says the majority of poles working abroad are now going to germany, and seamus nevin who works for the institute of directors, a Group Representing business leaders, who says they have seen a sharp decrease in job applications from outside the uk. Hello, how are you . Hello. For ayri ama hello, how are you . Hello. For ayri am a cave. Andrzej, you have stopped recruiting polish people for uk jobs. White . There are a few factors. The main thing we believe is it is brexit, because we prepared special surveys in october 2015. At that time, 30 polish potential migrates had declared they wanted to go to the united kingdom, but after a year, after the decision about brexit, in october 2016, when we asked the same question, there were only 14 people who work polish potential migrants who wanted to go to the uk. The changes in the law, about brexit, about the possibility of the reduction of Welfare Benefits in the uk had a big impact in the reduction in interest of emigration from poland. Let me bring in seamus. Your group have seen a dramatically reduced number of applicants . Absolutely. While it is too early to conclude from any broad sweeping generalisations, we can see the effect brexit might have on the uk labour market. There is unlikely to bea labour market. There is unlikely to be a massive drop in immigrant until after the uk has left the eu in two years time. How will that affect your members if there is a reduction in people applying forjobs, are their british people to fill those jobs . What sort ofjobs are we talking about . All across the board. Any shortage of people coming into the uk will be a worry for uk employers. Also it is a worry because immigrants do not only bring vital skills and economy, they also increased demand for the product and resources we provide. Any reduction in the numberof resources we provide. Any reduction in the number of people looking working in our economy will have consequences for the economy. Would you agree with andrzej that perhaps an explanation for the reduced number of applications from people abroad to fill british jobs is because of uncertainty, anxiety, worried about whether they will be made to feel welcome here. We have seen a made to feel welcome here. We have seen a lot of stories in the British Press about people feeling unwelcome in the uk for some time. That is something we are worried about and we have called on the uk government to guarantee the status of migrants. This country is generally welcoming place. This campaign was not that mass deportations, it was about settling the immigration policy for the future. We want to make sure people who are actively here and contributing to our economy and help us to grow and prosper. Andrzej, tell us why a lot of polish workers are now applying to work in germany . The main reason is because germany is still in a united europe and it is still in a united europe and it is quite close to poland and this is the geographical reasons. The second one is that after the brexit referendum, there were a few anti immigrant incidents in the uk which were widely condemned in the polish media. It also can put off polls from decisions about immigration to the united kingdom, because they dont know what will be the future and how the other british will work with them. Are you lobbying seamus nevin, on behalf of the institute of directors, the government, in order to make it clear to them that there might be some vacancies once brexit happens and that will be a problem for your members . Absolutely. It is clear from the referendum that there is a desire from people to take back control as it were but we have to make sure we strike the right balance between that public desire and the needs of our economy. I dont think anyone wants to see a negative impact on the uk labour market. We have seen already a reduction in the value of sterling compared to the euro and other currencies and that has probably had an effect on the number of people looking to come here. The uk is a less desirable place for people to come to and work. Why are there not enough british people to do the jobs . We have full employment. We do not have full employment. We have 3 millionjobs not have full employment. We have 3 million jobs created and there is full of employment across the board. In areas such as science, technology, engineering and maths, we dont have enough graduates and also foreign languages. If we want to go out and trade with the rest of the world we need to have people with those kind of skills to help us tap into the markets. Thank you, you can takea tap into the markets. Thank you, you can take a breath now and thank you very much andrzej kubisiak, a recruitment officer based in warsaw. Thank you for coming on the programme. A couple of messages from you to do with Dame Helen Mirren. Christie on twitter said watching Dame Helen Mirren speaking so candidly about her on self esteem issues will inspire teenagers.
